Training Future Agriculture Professionals In Landowner–Tenant Conservation Decision-Making, Andrea Basche, Angela Carter
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The landowner–tenant relationship is important to the implementation of conservation on agricultural lands. Women own or co-own a significant portion of U.S. farmland yet are underrepresented in conservation research. The next generation of agriculture professionals can benefit from first-hand experience in assisting women landowners and their tenants in navigating the complexities of conservation decision-making. This article analyzes undergraduate student perceptions of landowner–tenant relationships in conservation management through their engagement in case studies with women landowner–tenant pairs in the Western Corn Belt. Student groups were asked to complete a management improvement plan that both incorporated the agronomic and conservation goals discussed …

BACKGROUND: Protein kinase D1 (PKD1) is a serine–threonine kinase that regulates various functions within the cell. Herein, we report the significance of PKD1 expression in glucose metabolism resulting in pancreatic cancer (PanCa) progression and chemo-resistance.
METHODS: PKD1 expression in PanCa was investigated by using immunohistochemistry. Functional and metabolic assays were utilised to analyse the effect of PKD1 expression/knockdown on associated cellular/molecular changes.
RESULTS: PKD1 expression was detected in human pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia lesions (MCS=12.9; P < 0.0001) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma samples (MCS=15, P < 0.0001) as compared with faint or no expression in normal pancreatic tissues (MCS= 1.54; P < 0.0001). Our results determine that PKD1 enhances glucose metabolism in PanCa cells, by triggering enhanced tumorigenesis and chemo-resistance. We demonstrate that mTORC1 activation by PKD1 regulates metabolic alterations in PanCa cells. siRNA knockdown of Raptor or treatment with rapamycin inhibited PKD1-accelerated lactate production as well as glucose consumption in cells, which confirms the association of mTORC1 with PKD1-induced metabolic alterations.
CONCLUSION: This study suggests a novel role of PKD1 as a key modulator of the glucose metabolism in PanCa cells accelerating tumorigenesis …

Distributed De Novo Assembler For Large-Scale Long-Read Datasets, Sayan Goswami, Kisung Lee, Seung Jong Park
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Third-generation DNA sequencing technologies such as single-molecule real-time sequencing (SMRT) and nanopore sequencing have the potential to fill the gaps in the existing genome databases since the raw sequences produced by these machines are much longer than those of previous generations and therefore result in more contiguous assemblies. However, these long reads have a high error rate, which makes the assembly process computationally challenging. Moreover, since existing long-read assemblers are designed to run on a single machine, they either take days to complete or run out of memory on even moderate-sized datasets. In this paper, we present a distributed long-read …

Named Data Networking (NDN) is proposed as a future Internet architecture, which provides name-based data publishing and fetching primitive. Compared to TCP/IP, the benefits of NDN are as follows. NDN removes the need to manage IP address; NDN provides semantically meaningful and structured names; NDN has a stateful and name-based forwarding plane; NDN supports data-centric security and in-network caching. Name-based Access Control is an access control solution proposed over NDN, which is a content-based access control by encrypting data at the time of production directly without relying on a third-party service(i.e., Cloud storage), utilizes NDN’s hierarchical naming convention to express …

Service discovery is one of the crucial components of modern applications. With the advent of several new systems such as IoT, edge, cloud, etc the world is connected more than ever and smart devices are creeping towards every nook and corner of our surroundings. Not only the new systems are emerging but also the communication pattern is evolving i.e. from one-to-one (host-host) to many-to-many (distributed application, IoT). The definition of service has also changed over time. Unlike their meaning in the past as programs running on some machines, services today can be sensor devices collecting data, mobile devices offering computing …

Brief Of Professor Edward A. Zelinsky As Amicus Curiae In Support Of Plaintiff’S Motion For Leave To File Bill Of Complaint, Edward A. Zelinsky
Amicus Briefs
Professor Edward Zelinsky submitted an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in New Hampshire’s constitutional challenge against Massachusetts’s recently promulgated regulation imposing its income tax on nonresident remote workers, arguing that the Court should grant New Hampshire’s motion for leave because a state cannot source nonresidents’ income earned beyond the state’s borders; taxpayers have “no practical remedy” for relief from unconstitutional taxation under the Tax Injunction Act; and only the Court can make rulings over the boundaries of state authority.

Maturity And Well-Being: Consistent Associations Across Samples And Measures, Stephen Reysen, Courtney N. Plante, Truong Quang Lam, Shanmukh V. Kamble, Iva Katzarska-Miller, Natalia Assis, Grace Packard, Eduardo Gregolin Moretti
Journal of Wellness
Introduction: Researchers have noted an association between maturity and well-being. However, this body of research uses different measures and conceptualizations of maturity (e.g., ego development, psychosocial maturity) and often only a few indicators of well-being. In the present research, we examined associations between a single self-rated measure of maturity and a variety of different indicators of well-being. Furthermore, we examined this association across a variety of samples. We hypothesized that maturity will show a positive relationship with measures related to well-being.
Methods: Samples of college students (Studies 1, 3, 4), Star Wars fans (Study 2), and individuals in the U.S., …

Instrumental Quality Attributes Of Alaska Pollock Derived Surimi Gels With Sweet Potato Starch, Kiyonna Williams, Zandra Mikell, Samuel Chetachukwu Adegoke, Reza Tahergorabi
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Starch plays an important role in the formation of the network structure of surimi-starch gels. Alaska Pollock surimi gels were prepared with final moisture of 78%. Sweet potato starch (SPS) and silicon dioxide – inert filler, were added in inverse concentrations to develop treatments of 0% (control), 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% SPS. Textural properties such as hardness, resilience, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness were positively impacted by SPS. As the concentration of the SPS increased, a non-systematic trend was observed in the Kramer shear force of surimi gels. Total cooking loss and water holding capacity were significantly improved (P < 0.05). Surimi gels showed slight but significant reductions (P < 0.05) in whiteness with SPS addition due to significant decreases (P < 0.05) in L* and an increase in a* values. The Ash content of surimi gels increased with the addition of SPS. These results suggest that SPS can be incorporated into surimi products without compromising quality, which may be useful to manufacturers for marketing surimi products with added health benefits.

Augmented reality (AR) shopping is typically thought of as the filling up of an empty space with virtual objects to assess the fit of that object to that space. This formulation ignores the portion of shopping that involves the replacement of an item. While a user can take a photo of an item, without an AR model of the item, the user cannot determine the fit or suitability of the item to their spaces. Current AR tools cannot identify and describe the key differences between what a user has and what the user wants to purchase. This disclosure describes techniques …

A 58-year-old male presented to our institution with synchronous large left thigh sarcoma and sacral decubitus ulcer requiring oncologic resection and reconstruction. Due to extensive tumor involvement, use of local flap for reconstruction was not feasible. Therefore, a spare parts free fillet flap from the disarticulated lower leg was utilized for reconstruction following oncologic resection. The benefits of this spare parts approach include no donor site morbidity, sufficient tissue padding for later use of prosthesis, and preservation of other flaps for future reconstruction of his sacral decubitus ulcer.

Raynaud’s disease is a cutaneous manifestation often present in various connective tissue and vascular diseases. Depending on the age of onset and acuity of symptoms, the phenomenon can provide clinicians with some insight as to the severity of underlying disease, including the distinction between primary and secondary Raynaud’s. However, this diagnostic approach seems to have its limitations regarding efficacy and timing of treatment. Traditionally, treatment of Raynaud’s has focused on reestablishing blood perfusion to affected tissue, which has previously been achieved with vasodilatory medications and site-specific surgical intervention. In lieu of the severe sequelae of Raynaud’s in the setting of …
