Something To Believe In, Carter Macdonald, Amma Christiansen, Robin Curry, Sabrina Owens
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
When interpreted as a whole, Emily Dickinson's manuscript booklets of writing, or fascicles, offer insight into individual poems. As many scholars have speculated, Dickinson expresses religious ideas with experimental instability. The collection of poems on fascicle five, sheet three, demonstrate an anticipation of life exalted after death. For example, "As Watchers hang upon the East -" changes from a hopeful poem about the afterlife, to a questioning one that encourages the reader to remain critical of religion. In this poem, there is mention of a beggar who, while pondering death, looks forward to the prospect of a heavenly 'feast' promised …
Are There Unidentified Frequent Issues Among Student Loan Providers?, Dan Ludwig
Are There Unidentified Frequent Issues Among Student Loan Providers?, Dan Ludwig
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
There are millions of students, many of whom cannot afford to pay for their schooling without a loan. Student loans are an important business for financial institutions. It's common for students to run into issues at some point when dealing with their loan providers and servicers. I'm using Natural Language Processing (NLP) Topic Modeling algorithms to analyze customer complaint narratives to identify important emerging problems beyond the ones defined prior to complaint collection.
Mediating Factors Of Family Risk And Parent-Child Interaction Quality, Gable Munn
Mediating Factors Of Family Risk And Parent-Child Interaction Quality, Gable Munn
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Medium or high family risk is defined as having 2 or more risk factors as present in intake surveys in the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project (EHSREP). Previous research has shown that high and medium risk families are more prone to negative parent-child interactions (Steele et al., 2016), but mediating variables are not clear. We hypothesize that parental stress and familial conflict are significant mediating variables between family risk and parent-child interaction quality. We also suspect that stress will have a more significant effect (Mak et al., 2020). The present study used extant data from the EHSREP (N=3001) …
Analyzing The Adoption Of Corporate Social Responsibility Strategies, Lia Sorensen
Analyzing The Adoption Of Corporate Social Responsibility Strategies, Lia Sorensen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a business strategy via which a company aligns social and environmental concerns with both its business operations and its interactions with stakeholders. This paper examines how CSR creates value for companies that adopt CSR actions. It focuses on the CSR actions of six companies, five public and one private: Starbucks, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Nike, Unilever (Ben & Jerry's), and Penzeys Spices. In the 2000s, many companies began to see value in CSR and to implement CSR infrastructure and actions. With CSR increasing in popularity, more robust analyses of these initiatives started to …

Autocart: Spatially-Aware Regression Trees For Ecological And Spatial Modeling, Ethan Ancell
Autocart: Spatially-Aware Regression Trees For Ecological And Spatial Modeling, Ethan Ancell
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Many ecological and spatial processes are complex in nature and are not accurately modeled by linear models. Regression trees promise to handle the high-order interactions that are present in ecological and spatial datasets, but fail to produce physically realistic characterizations of the underlying landscape. The "autocart'' (autocorrelative regression trees) R package extends the functionality of previously proposed spatial regression tree methods through a spatially aware splitting function and novel adaptive inverse distance weighting method in each terminal node. The efficacy of these autocart models, including an autocart extension of random forest, is demonstrated on multiple datasets. This highlights the ability …

Expanding Healthcare To Underserved Communities, Hunter Murdock, Colten Dougher
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
According to the Bureau of Health's Workforce Health Resources and Services Administration, there are almost 253 million people who do not have adequate access to healthcare in the United States. While innovations in technology, drug manufacturing, and procedures will continue to make healthcare more affordable and more accessible, policies restricting doctors' and nurses' abilities to practice healthcare are creating barriers that prevent them from utilizing existing technology to reduce healthcare shortages in underserved areas. The underserved populations in America include rural communities, Native Americans, and linguistic minority groups. Many of today's healthcare policy suggestions aim at increasing health insurance coverage …
The Age And Origin Of Precambrian Orthogneiss Of The Grouse Creek Block, Northern Utah And Southern Idaho, Skadi Kobe
The Age And Origin Of Precambrian Orthogneiss Of The Grouse Creek Block, Northern Utah And Southern Idaho, Skadi Kobe
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
New geochronologic and isotopic analyses from the Grouse Creek block (GC) provide insight into the assembly of western Laurentia during the late Archean to Paleoproterozoic and establish the influence of the GC in the evolution of Yellowstone-Snake River Plain hotspot magmatism in the central Snake River Plain. The GC is primarily exposed in the Albion-Raft River-Grouse Creek metamorphic core complex of northern Utah and southern Idaho and includes a complex assemblage of orthogneiss, schist, amphibolite, and metasediments intruded by Oligocene plutons and overlain by Cenozoic sedimentary units. Many investigations of the GC have focused on the structural evolution of the …

How Do The Mental Health Services Offered By Usu Pre-Covid19 Compare To The Present?, Casey Mack
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
How do the mental health services offered by USU pre-COVID19 compare to the present? COVID19 has essentially taken the world and changed it. People are required to stay inside more, there is a decrease in social interaction and there is a political aspect most weren't expecting. This question is important because in such tumultuous time, mental health and mental health services are of utmost importance. Isolation and a change in most every aspect of life can take a toll on someone's mental health. The approach to this project is done with mixed methods. Students majoring in English at Utah State …
Altered Toxin Binding Or Access To The Binding Site, What Changes In The Tetrodotoxin Resistant Sodium Channels Of Garter Snakes?, Kenyon Mitchell
Altered Toxin Binding Or Access To The Binding Site, What Changes In The Tetrodotoxin Resistant Sodium Channels Of Garter Snakes?, Kenyon Mitchell
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Voltage-gated sodium ion channels are required for the generation and propagation of action potentials in vertebrate nerve and muscle cells. The neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX) binds in the channel pore and blocks sodium channel function. Some populations of garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) have evolved resistance to TTX in part due to amino acid substitutions in the pore of the voltage-gated sodium channel expressed in skeletal muscle fibers (tsNaV1.4). We have previously demonstrated that the four amino acid substitutions in tsNaV1.4 from snake populations in California reduce TTX binding. These four amino acid substitutions are at or near an amino acid position …
Functional Complementation Of The Ppgcn4 And Ppnhx2 Genes In Arabidopsis Thaliana To Study Salt Tolerance, Amanda Moravek
Functional Complementation Of The Ppgcn4 And Ppnhx2 Genes In Arabidopsis Thaliana To Study Salt Tolerance, Amanda Moravek
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Climate change induces unexpected weather and causes abiotic and biotic stresses in plants. These stresses negatively affect crop growth and production. Additionally, a steady increase in the world population has been leading to higher food demand. Therefore, the development of more stress-resilient crops is essential to combat these problems. One such stress is a salinity that affects crop production. Almond is a salt-sensitive crop, so there is a need to identify salt-tolerant almond rootstocks. AtGCN4 is a novel gene that was identified in Arabidopsis thaliana to play a significant role in host-pathogen interaction and drought tolerance when overexpressed. The preliminary …

Teaching Through A Screen: How Usu English Instructors Approached Online Course Accessibility During Covid-19, Sabrina Satterthwaite
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Although academia has been transitioning to more virtual instructional methods for some time, the COVID-19 pandemic has made switching to remote classrooms a necessity. As a result, many instructors have been required to convert their traditionally face-to-face courses into online courses for the Fall 2020 semester. This online instructional mode presents opportunities and challenges alike for creating class content that is accessible both to students with disabilities and students with situational barriers, such as stress, money, or technology resources. This study explores how Utah State University English instructors implemented accessibility strategies in the transition to more remote learning during the …

Introduction Up to 40% of orthopaedic injuries in children require a closed reduction, almost always necessitating procedural sedation. Intravenous ketamine is the most commonly used sedative agent. However, intravenous insertion is painful and can be technically difficult in children. We hypothesise that a combination of intranasal dexmedetomidine plus intranasal ketamine (Ketodex) will be non-inferior to intravenous ketamine for effective sedation in children undergoing a closed reduction. Methods and analysis This is a six-centre, four-arm, adaptive, randomised, blinded, controlled, non-inferiority trial. We will include children 4-17 years with a simple upper limb fracture or dislocation that requires sedation for a closed …

The Impact Of Biological Components On A Dog's Personality, Kinsley Batson
The Impact Of Biological Components On A Dog's Personality, Kinsley Batson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
We interact with dogs every day, and they are often referred to as "man's best friend." But what makes a dog the happy-go-lucky, cuddly fur ball of happiness that so many love? Similar to humans, there is a nature vs. nurture debate on what shapes a dog's personality. While it is likely a mixture of both, I've researched a variety of biological components that help to make a dog a dog. Some of these include face shape, how their brain responds to audio stimuli, and a specific gene, also found in children with Williams syndrome, that is thought to make …

Isolation Of Halotolerant Bacteria From The Rhizosphere Of Ceanothus Velutinus May Lead To Contributions In Plant Health In Saline Conditions, Jacob Davis
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
The recent rise in the average global temperature has been a driving force over the past few years for rising soil salinity. This presents an especially hostile environment to many plant species that may not have previously been exposed to these conditions. The rhizosphere, which is a layer of soil attached to the roots of a plant, contains microorganisms that contribute to the plants' abiotic and biotic stress resistance. These microorganisms are known as Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR). These can play a key role in contributing to plant stress resistance. Some native plants have shown a strong ability to …

Modeling Performance Of Microgrid And Electric Vehicle Technology On The Utah State University Electric Distribution Network, Jackson Morgan
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
To estimate the value of solar power, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging on a small utility's distribution network, power system simulation was performed to compare the load profiles and bills of various levels of deployment. This project used Utah State University's south distribution network and its new parking structure as a testbed for simulation and analysis of new energy technology. The project found that for a rate structure with a fixed capacity reservation and a low energy charge, campus solar power is not currently viable for significantly reducing costs. Conversely, electric vehicle charging could be implemented at a low …

Media And The Covid-19 Infodemic, Alek Nelson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
With the recent COVID-19 outbreak, many challenges have arisen across the world. From overloaded hospitals to economic fallout to mental health issues, this pandemic is a new challenge for many people. Among the difficulties faced is the increase in misinformation, information "that is false due to lack of scientifically reliable evidence," regarding treatment, prevention, and the virus itself (Bahrami et al., 2019). An online survey was conducted during June 2020 to determine how media sources affects belief in COVID-19 misinformation. The results of the survey show that people are either using bad news sources, mainstream news is reiterating disinformation, and/or …

No Nearer Neighbor Have They: How Emily Dickinson's Fascicle 37 Explores Nature As A Link Between Man And God, Evan Rasmussen, Mckay Brezenski, Xiomara Castro
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
It is typically the practice to examine poems individually to grasp their meaning, but examining Emily Dickinson's poems in the context of their fascicle sheets, and the fascicles, themselves, can be an illuminating and worthwhile endeavor. When Emily Dickinson's poem "Four Trees - upon a solitary Acre - " is interpreted in isolation from the other poems Dickinson placed on the same manuscript sheet, it emerges as a beautiful commentary on the natural world and its relationship with humanity. The poem separates its speaker from nature, concluding that nature is something mankind may never fully comprehend. However, when this poem's …

A Profile On The Effects Of A Worldwide Pandemic On Writing In The Workplace, Maigan Sorensen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
In the midst of a worldwide pandemic, many social norms in society have changed. Social norms have changed as well as how businesses function. Many people spend more time at home than outside, and infection is still on the rise. Workers and their employers have turned to remote or tele-commuting solutions to avoid spread of COVID-19. Businesses and other establishments that employ considerable numbers of people had to develop communication plans or draw on existing emergency procedures to ensure that processes continued as normally as possible. This research project was designed to examine the changes that have been implemented in …
