An Innovative Approach Using Virtual Sitter Video Monitoring For Fall Reduction In The Medical-Surgical Microsystem, Roman Kutu
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem: Although many fall prevention protocols have been utilized across hospital settings, the patient fall rate in one acute care medical-surgical microsystem continues to be a significant safety problem. Despite many safety precautions, including external bed and chair alarms, twelve falls were recorded in 2019, and fifteen falls occurred in this unit's 2020 fiscal year.
Context: Despite identifying risk factors for falls and employing several fall prevention protocols, patient falls are the most common adverse and challenging patient safety event for hospitals. One of the most common interventions to reduce falls has been the utilization of in-person sitters; …

Does Change In Binge Drinking Reduce Risk Of Repeat Sexual Assault Victimization? Evidence From Three Cohorts Of Freshman Undergraduate Women, Leah C. Butler, Bonnie S. Fisher, Bradford W. Reyns
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Many college students who experience sexual assault experience subsequent (i.e., repeat) sexual assault incidents. There is also an established relationship between sexual assault and binge drinking. The “once bitten, twice shy” (OBTS) hypothesis suggests that those who experience alcohol- or drugrelated (AOD) sexual assault would reduce how frequently they binge drink in an effort to avoid repeat victimization. We test this hypothesis by analyzing two years of survey data collected from a panel of three cohorts of freshmen women. Supportive of OBTS, our analyses reveal that students who experienced an AOD-related sexual assault at time 1 only reduced the number …

The Impact Of Gratitude On Body Image, Exercise, And Eating Behaviors, Alisha M. Wenger
The Impact Of Gratitude On Body Image, Exercise, And Eating Behaviors, Alisha M. Wenger
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Individuals with higher body dissatisfaction have higher disordered eating, excessive exercise, mental health concerns, and lower self-esteem. Gratitude interventions have been used to decrease body shame (objectified body consciousness), body dissatisfaction and increase positive body image. Gratitude interventions have primarily focused on changing state gratitude, leading to quick short changes. Individuals with long term, trait gratitude may have lower levels of excessive exercise, disordered eating, and a more positive body image. The current research is focused on better understanding the relationship between trait gratitude, body image, excessive exercise and disordered eating. In total 268 students from a university lifelong fitness …

Punk rock developed in the 1970s and local scenes developed throughout Europe and the United States. East Germany was no exception. Despite — and because of — the brutal state-sponsored violence against and repression of anyone who did not conform to the government’s ideals, punk flourished in the Deutsche Demokratische Republik. Although the initial exposure to punk came via English punk bands on West German radio, the Eastern punks had little interest in the West and were largely anti-capitalist. Instead, they focused their attention on their own country and on the vast social reform needed there. The punks channeled their …
Creating An Educational Intervention To Combat Nursing Incivility Benchmark Study, Kathleen P. Melancon
Creating An Educational Intervention To Combat Nursing Incivility Benchmark Study, Kathleen P. Melancon
MSN Capstone Projects
When most people reflect on the nursing as a profession, the term compassionate typically comes to mind. The association with compassion is no surprise as nursing is considered to be the most compassionate profession in the world. Nurses, by trade and in all areas of practice, have an ethical and professional responsibility to create and uphold an environment of mutual respect and civility. However, the notion of “nurses eat their young” and the behaviors that stem from this mindset are causing detrimental effects not only to those organizations employing nurses but to patients and the nurses themselves.
Over the last …
Minority Student Food Insecurity In Higher Education, Joe Sevillano
Minority Student Food Insecurity In Higher Education, Joe Sevillano
Master's Theses
The minority student population in higher education has been affected by food insecurity at a disproportionate rate. Several studies have captured some of the issues associated with the material deficit but fail to identify more in-depth contributing factors. Using the theoretical framework of intersectionality, the researcher examines the experience, interpretation, and navigation of food insecurity in a medium-sized university located in a major city on the west coast. The researcher interviewed three students that self-identified as having multiple minority identities and experiencing some level of food insecurity while pursuing a degree. Findings from three rounds of interviews gave further context …
Social Media Dependency And College Student Adjustment, Kylee Defrese
Social Media Dependency And College Student Adjustment, Kylee Defrese
Honors Theses
While previous studies have looked at the effects of social media dependency on disordered eating symptoms, body image concerns, and anxiety and depression symptoms, few have looked at these effects on exclusively college students. The current study utilized a survey to examine the associations between social media dependency, disordered eating symptoms, body image concerns, and anxiety and depression symptoms. Ninety-seven college students (Mage = 18.8 years, SD = 1.51; 82.5% young women; 17.5% young males ; 75.3% White; 91.8% non-Hispanic/non-Latinx) completed established measures, and reported on their social media dependency (Xanidis & Brignell, 2016), body image concerns (Schaefer, …

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains one of the overall leading causes of death in premature infants, and the pathogenesis is unpredictable and not well characterized. The aim of our study was to determine the molecular phenotype of NEC via transcriptomic and epithelial cell-specific epigenomic analysis, with a specific focus on DNA methylation.
METHODS: Using laser capture microdissection, epithelial cell-specific methylation signatures were characterized by whole-genome bisulfite sequencing of ileal and colonic samples at the time of surgery for NEC and after NEC had healed at reanastomosis (n = 40). RNA sequencing was also performed to determine the transcriptomic profile of …

The Television Showrunner: A Case Study Analysis Of Insecure And Fleabag, Haley Bulen, Charles Howard
Honors Thesis
In light of the rise in video-on-demand (VOD) services, television has exploded in popularity on an international scale, eclipsing its predecessor of movies. This phenomenon has been further heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic as audiences flocked to their television screens during Stay-At-Home orders. Specifically, Netflix received 15 million more subscribers since mid- March, 2.3 million more Americans subscribed to Netflix since March, and broadcast television viewing has jumped by 8.3 million viewers (Fitzgerald). With the demand for high-quality entertainment, the role of the television creator/showrunner has become increasingly important, as this individual or pair of individuals is tasked with maintaining …

The Surprising Views Of Montesquieu And Tocqueville About Juries: Juries Empower Judges, Renée Lettow Lerner
The Surprising Views Of Montesquieu And Tocqueville About Juries: Juries Empower Judges, Renée Lettow Lerner
Louisiana Law Review
Both Montesquieu and Tocqueville thought that an independent judiciary was key to maintaining a moderate government of ordered liberty. But judicial power should not be exercised too openly, or the people would view judges as tyrannical. In Montesquieu's and Tocqueville's view, the jury was an excellent mask for the power of judges. Both Montesquieu and Tocqueville thought that popular juries had many weaknesses in deciding cases. But, as Tocqueville made clear, the firm guidance of the judge in instructions on law and comments on evidence could prevent juries from going astray and make the institution a "free school" for democracy. …
