The Experience Of Living With Hypertension: Lessons From A Cohort Of Older Men, Junjira Seesawang
The Experience Of Living With Hypertension: Lessons From A Cohort Of Older Men, Junjira Seesawang
Dissertations
Poor adherence to treatment and poorly controlled hypertension are common in older men, especially in rural areas. Knowledge about the experience of living with hypertension among older men is important for developing nursing practices to enhance treatment adherence. However, little is known about the personal experiences of older men with hypertension. This dissertation includes three papers that address the following: (1) the experiences of men with hypertension, based on a review of literature, (2) factors influencing the ability to self-manage hypertension among older adults in Asian countries, based on a review of qualitative studies, and (3) grounded theory study exploring …
An Educational Initiative To Prevent Unnecessary Hospitalization For Hospice Patients, Alkeisha H. Mims
An Educational Initiative To Prevent Unnecessary Hospitalization For Hospice Patients, Alkeisha H. Mims
Dissertations
Avoidable hospitalizations of hospice patients cost Medicare $3 billion a year. When hospice nurses are able to identify early signs and symptoms of acute illness and provide appropriate interventions to prevent such admissions, 20-60% of the hospitalizations are preventable. The practice problem addressed in this quality improvement doctor of nursing project was the 30% hospital admission rate of hospice patients as evidenced by chart review, admission data, and revocation data. The first purpose of the project was to identify evidence-based nursing care paths in the literature for the top 5 medical diagnoses related to avoidable hospital admissions. The second purpose …

#Leadershipaccelerated: A Coach Mindset Focused Leadership Development Program, Diane Rindlisbacher
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Problem: Developing leaders to lead in environments that are dynamic, complex, and ambiguous is an area of focus for healthcare leaders. How leaders lead and how organizations develop leaders is tied to the outcomes they achieve (Development Dimensions International [DDI], 2019; Moldoveanu & Narayandas, 2019; Till, Dutta, & McKimm, 2016). To create a climate of trust and safety where teams succeed requires leaders to embed key attributes and competencies into their day-to-day work.
Context: A leader’s ability to create a climate of trust and safety and to adopt and apply a coach mindset to their work is intended to help …

Implementing Virtual Sitters To Reduce Falls And Sitter Costs, Asia Quovadis Williams Plahar
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
The setting for this DNP project was a 326-bed, suburban hospital in Northern California that was facing challenges with preventing falls with injury and rising sitter costs. Between May 2018 and June 2019, there were four sentinel events related to falls with significant injuries. This hospital was financially impacted by the growing cost of the expanding sitter program caused by the rising elderly patient population, with demographics requiring one-to-one, in-person sitters to observe them visually. There is ample research demonstrating the utility of video monitoring systems to improve patient safety by reducing falls, enhancing staff safety by reducing workplace injuries …

Workplace Violence: An Urgent Call For Integrated Staff Education In Acute Care Hospitals, Nicole Bellisario
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Problem: Type II workplace violence (WPV) in acute care hospital settings has become an epidemic of costly proportions in the United States. Regulatory mandates and healthcare accreditation standards increasingly require healthcare employers to provide a safe and healthy healing environment for patients and a safe work environment for staff. Implementation of a comprehensive WPV prevention program depends largely on organizational culture, participation and commitment from key stakeholders, and readiness for change.
Context: The patient-clinician relationship has drawn urgent attention, as healthcare organizations around the world implement key components of WPV prevention programs. The clinical management of patient aggression …

Large Global Variations In Measured Airborne Metal Concentrations Driven By Anthropogenic Sources, Jacob Mcneill, Randal V. Martin, Nofel Lagrosas, 35 Co-Authors
SOSE Affiliate: Manila Observatory
Globally consistent measurements of airborne metal concentrations in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are important for understanding potential health impacts, prioritizing air pollution mitigation strategies, and enabling global chemical transport model development. PM2.5 filter samples (N ~ 800 from 19 locations) collected from a globally distributed surface particulate matter sampling network (SPARTAN) between January 2013 and April 2019 were analyzed for particulate mass and trace metals content. Metal concentrations exhibited pronounced spatial variation, primarily driven by anthropogenic activities. PM2.5 levels of lead, arsenic, chromium, and zinc were significantly enriched at some locations by factors of 100–3000 compared …
The Design And Development Of A Monochrome Volumetric Display Using Laser Diodes And A Rotating Helix Structure, Seth Barger
The Design And Development Of A Monochrome Volumetric Display Using Laser Diodes And A Rotating Helix Structure, Seth Barger
Honors Theses
As electronic displays and televisions reach near-perfection, the limit of two dimensions has become more evident. Since conventional display technology will soon stale, it is imperative to find new ways of displaying images. This study uses the persistence of vision as the launching point for an original volumetric display technology, fooling the human eye into seeing a volumetric image. Using a rotating helical apparatus and an array of projecting laser diodes, a successful prototype was produced which is capable of displaying a true volumetric image. Based on the success of this primitive experimental prototype, this technology is ready for expansion …
An Online Self-Directed Learning Module For Regional Stroke Survey Success, Winchell Rodriguez Kuttner
An Online Self-Directed Learning Module For Regional Stroke Survey Success, Winchell Rodriguez Kuttner
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
The lack of a standardized education for stroke coordinators focusing on The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and requirements in preparation for the stroke program disease-specific care (DSC) certification survey every two years has led to undue added stress prior to survey. The development of tools and resources has been identified to address the current educational gap in stroke coordinator orientation. This project addressed the gap by creating an online, self-directed learning module to assist the stroke coordinators in knowledge acquisition of the stroke standards and requirements.
A stroke coordinator plays a critical role in stroke care delivery. An educational module …
Implementation Of Artificial Intelligence Initiated Rapid Responses To Reduce In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest, Alicia Potolsky
Implementation Of Artificial Intelligence Initiated Rapid Responses To Reduce In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest, Alicia Potolsky
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Hospitals with strong and consistently activated rapid response teams (RRTs) have significantly fewer cardiac arrests. Early recognition of clinical deterioration supports the timely activation of RRTs, which increases earlier assessment and intervention. Current early warning tools are not sufficient and reliable for recognizing patient deterioration, and they are evolving, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to identify clinical decline much earlier. The project organization had previously implemented the medical early warning score tool into the RRT nurses’ practice to prioritize patient assessments, but this was not sustained due to its unreliability in identifying patients at risk.

Using Simulation For Oncology Nursing Competency Evaluation In Hospitals, Dana Littlepge
Using Simulation For Oncology Nursing Competency Evaluation In Hospitals, Dana Littlepge
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Problem Oncologic patients requiring acute nursing care are usually admitted to the designated oncologic medical surgical nursing unit, these care settings often have low admission volumes of oncologic patients that require chemotherapy and or post-therapy care (Muehlbauer, Parr, & Perkins, 2013). Nurses in these environments have reported decreased professional confidence and not feeling safe enough to administer chemotherapy, monitor, and care for cancer patients (Muehlbauer, Parr, & Perkins, 2013).
Context: The current education structure for many hospitals in an integrated healthcare system, does not consistently provide all the components needed for an onsite oncologic nursing competency validation program. Developing a …

Functional Investigations Of Proteins And Enzymatic Toxins From Full-Length-Enriched Cdna Of Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus Horridus), Joshua Osula
Theses
Snake Venom is a highly modified form of saliva, contains hundreds of zootoxins, necrotoxins, cytotoxins, neurotoxins, and mytotoxins, all of which are primarily made up of mostly proteins, polypeptides, and other components such as enzymes, lipids, and carbohydrates. Although snake venom is known for its harmful effects, it has also had a positive impact in scientific discovery and medicine. Some toxins from snakes function to inhibit pain, and this means they can be very effective analgesics. For instance, crotalphine is considered a 14-amino-acid-peptide that has a disulfide bond and shows analgesic properties through TRPA1 desensitization. This …

Exposing Lettuce Plants To Cyanobacteria In A Closed Hydroponics System To Reduce Cyanobacterial Growth And Production, Emily Eberly
Exposing Lettuce Plants To Cyanobacteria In A Closed Hydroponics System To Reduce Cyanobacterial Growth And Production, Emily Eberly
Honors Projects
Sandusky Bay is largely populated by cyanobacterial algal blooms, mainly formed by Planktothrix. Fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus run from agricultural lands into the bay, building up excess nutrients forming eutrophic waters. The Planktothrix feed off these nutrients and grow into algal blooms. To determine a potential solution to the growth of these blooms, I implemented a hydroponics system involving Lactuca Sativa for analysis of Planktothrix growth and productivity. Four different nutrient conditions were added to a Planktothrix-only solution and a solution growing Planktothrix with the lettuce in the hydroponics system. The four conditions consisted of no nutrient …
