The Flowering Of Ecology: Maria Sibylla Merian's Caterpillar Book, Kay Etheridge
The Flowering Of Ecology: Maria Sibylla Merian's Caterpillar Book, Kay Etheridge
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
The Flowering of Ecology presents an English translation of Maria Sibylla Merian’s 1679 ‘caterpillar’ book, Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumen–Nahrung. Her processes in making the book and an analysis of its scientific content are presented in a historical context. Merian raised insects for five decades, recording the food plants, behavior and ecology of roughly 300 species. Her most influential invention was an 'ecological' composition in which the metamorphic cycles of insects (usually moths and butterflies) were arrayed around plants that served as food for the caterpillars. Kay Etheridge analyzes the 1679 caterpillar book from the viewpoint of …

Adolescent Substance Use Identification And Early Interventions: A Guide For School Counseling Professionals, Olivia Gullickson
Counselor Education Capstones
The purpose for this proposed literature review is to assess a variety of different substance use intervention programs and their effectiveness within a school setting. Based on current research provided by the Monitoring the Future Survey (2019), adolescent substance use continues to be on the rise and school-based substance use programs that are currently being utilized are ineffective to students exhibiting substance use and meeting their needs. This literature review also explores the use of parental monitoring interventions to support adolescent substance use in conjunction to school-based prevention programs. Findings from the proposed literature is intended to assist K-12 school …

Enhancing Quality Of Life For Individuals With Dementia Through A Virtual Ot Based Equine-Assisted Activities Program, Lauren Fearn, Becki Cohill, Karen Park, Martha Gipson
Fall 2020 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Individuals living with dementia typically experience progressive, cognitive, and functional decline which limits their ability to communicate and fully perform activities (Pimouguet el al., 2019). Horses have been shown to benefit individuals with dementia by improving well-being, physical health, functional capacity, and social relationships (Fields et. al., 2019). A 6-week OT based virtual equine-assisted activities program was conducted to determine if participation in equine-assisted activities could improve the quality of life of individuals with dementia. Outcomes of the program resulted in improvements in mood, energy level, engagement, communication, memory, socialization, and overall quality of life.

Synthesis Of The Oxidative Metabolites Of Di(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate And Analysis Of Metabolite Binding With Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptors, Alexis Brooner
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a persistent organic pollutant that is added to increase the flexibility of soft plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Since DEHP is not bound to the polymer, it leaches into the environment, leading to human exposure. When DEHP is metabolized by the body, it is cleaved into mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP). MEHP is then oxidized to produce the secondary-oxidized metabolites mono-(2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl)phthalate (5cx-MEPP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl)phthalate (5oxo-MEHP), and mono-[2-(carboxymethyl)hexyl]phthalate (2cx-MMHP). DEHP and its metabolites interact with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), which can alter lipid metabolism. To synthesize 5cx-MEHP, an enolate alkylation was performed with ethyl butyrate to form ethyl 2-ethyl-6-heptenoate. …
Niche Dynamics Of The Felid Guild Following The Pleistocene Megafaunal Extinction, Nicholas A. Freymueller
Niche Dynamics Of The Felid Guild Following The Pleistocene Megafaunal Extinction, Nicholas A. Freymueller
Biology ETDs
The loss of large carnivores is fundamentally restructuring modern mammal communities. However, large carnivore removal is not exclusively a modern trend. The Pleistocene Megafaunal Extinction (PME) resulted in a near-eradication of hyper-carnivorous felids such as saber-toothed cats. However, it is unclear if smaller surviving meso-felids began to infill this ecological vacuum post-PME. I apply Ecological Niche Modeling (ENM) to test evaluate whether surviving felids filled in vacant niches post-extinction, and hypothesize that they ought to have shown increased niche-overlap patterns with mega-felids post-extinction. I model species’ fundamental niches using a multi-temporal approach, and develop a novel test to model realized …

Problem: Heart failure (HF) is a chronic disease where the heart cannot deliver an adequate amount of blood that the body requires. HF is one of the costliest cardiovascular diseases plaguing public health in the United States (Go et al., 2014). HF is the main reason for hospitalizations in adults and a leading contributor to the rise in healthcare costs. Approximately 25% of Medicare patients are readmitted within 30-days of discharge (Go et al., 2013). To address excessive hospital readmissions, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (2019) initiated the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program in October 2012 to reduce Medicare …

A Performance Improvement Nursing Fellowship To Enhance Timely Access To Care, Cheryl Reinking
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
This scholarly report describes a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) project that advanced the performance improvement (PI) knowledge of frontline nurses to improve timely access to acute care during a 6-month PI/Lean management nursing fellowship. Patient flow issues delay access to care and result in negative patient quality outcomes and safety failures. Patient experience, confidence, and satisfaction in healthcare organizations erode when timeliness and efficiency are deficient. The project site is a 443-bed, two-campus, not for profit community hospital in Northern California. This project included the implementation of a PI/Lean nursing fellowship program as an evidence-based intervention to address patient …
Identification Of Victims Of Human Trafficking: Leading Change Through A Global Pandemic, Connie Clemmons-Brown
Identification Of Victims Of Human Trafficking: Leading Change Through A Global Pandemic, Connie Clemmons-Brown
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Human trafficking is a multi-billion-dollar global industry, generating $150 billion annually (International Labour Organization [ILO], 2014), and driven by the exploitation of victims of all ages, primarily for forced labor or commercial sex. Victims endure frequent and prolonged abuse, suffering illnesses, and injuries. When accessing the health care system, they often go unrecognized by health care providers and nurses. Recognition requires training to raise awareness and the right tools to capture the information necessary to identify victims and address opportunities to improve their safety, care, and support. The aim of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) evidence-based change project was …

Characterizing Patterns In Texas Gulf Coast Beach Dune Plant Species Composition, Cody Foster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Regional vegetation patterns of Texas beach plant communities were analyzed using cluster analysis, ANOSIM, SIMPER, NMDS, and ISA for fives zones representing the foredune complex of twenty Gulf Coast beaches. ANOVA revealed that zones differ in terms of percent bare sand, percent vegetative cover, and species richness. Cluster Analysis, ANOSIM, and SIMPER results indicate that Texas beaches can be divided into northern and southern regions based on differences in species composition of plant communities. Indicator Species Analysis (ISA) indicates that northern beaches are characterized by the presence of Rayjacksonia phyllocephala, Ambrosia Strophostyles, Ambrosia psilostachya, and Panicum amarum …

Impact Of Cd82 Expression On Acute Myeloid Leukemia Chemosensitivity And Quiescence, Muskan Floren
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) patients respond favorably to induction chemotherapy, however, long-term outcomes remain poor due to a high rate of chemoresistance and bone marrow minimal residual disease. To improve long-term patient outcomes, it’s critical to identify regulators of chemotherapy resistance in AML and develop therapies that are directed towards bone marrow resident AML cells. In Chapter 2, we uncover the impact of CD82 expression in AML response to chemotherapeutic treatment and the contribution of Protein Kinase C α (PKCα) and β1 integrin signaling in promoting p38 MAPK activation to support CD82-mediated AML cell survival. In Chapter 3, we …

The tropics are the source of most biodiversity yet inadequate sampling obscures answers to fundamental questions about how this diversity evolves. We leveraged samples assembled over decades of fieldwork to study diversification of the largest tropical bird radiation, the suboscine passerines. Our phylogeny, estimated using data from 2389 genomic regions in 1940 individuals of 1287 species, reveals that peak suboscine species diversity in the Neotropics is not associated with high recent speciation rates but rather with the gradual accumulation of species over time. Paradoxically, the highest speciation rates are in lineages from regions with low species diversity, which are generally …

Crisis Within A Crisis: A Comparative Analysis Of Covid-19’S Implications On Greece And Spain’S Migrant And Refugee Processing Policies, Injy Elhabrouk
Undergraduate Honors Theses
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic came a collective global panic regarding health, safety, and security. Since the major outbreak of the coronavirus in March of 2020, few issues have received scrutiny and attention in the public sphere. Yet, the problems that existed before COVID-19 have not become obsolete, however, they were removed from the public eye. One such issue to receive less scrutiny is the treatment of the most vulnerable populations in the world—migrants and refugees. Spain and Greece’s locations on the Mediterranean Sea mean they are often the first place migrants seek refuge in their journey to …

Earlier Palliative Care Referrals For Nephrology Patients, Jerold Cohen
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Palliative care prevents and relieves suffering through the early identification and treatment of pain and other symptoms, which can be physical, psychosocial, or spiritual (World Health Organization, 2018). It is usually considered a service provided to oncology patients and has positively impacted their treatment. However, it is not as common for many other diseases where the patient would benefit from palliative care involvement. Presently, if palliative care is offered to nephrology patients, it is after they have started dialysis and are having second thoughts whether to continue this treatment plan as it has either become less effective or is interfering …
