Sustainability In The Fashion Industry: Two Case Studies Highlighting Consumer Purchasing Actions Related To Brand Sustainability, Allison Zhang
Sustainability In The Fashion Industry: Two Case Studies Highlighting Consumer Purchasing Actions Related To Brand Sustainability, Allison Zhang
Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects
The rise of competition in the fashion industry has called for companies to differentiate themselves. One way of differentiation that has been seen in recent years is an increase in sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. This paper explores the use of press releases by fashion companies to see if the releases impact the companies’ bottom line. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if sustainability related press releases impact consumers in the United States decision making in purchasing products or supporting certain brands or companies. To conduct this study, yearly and quarterly financial data was collected to find trends …

Reviewing Pesticide Impacts On Frogs To Suggest Management Applications In The Gambles Mill Eco-Corridor, Marc Gorman
Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects
For years, frog populations have been declining due to a variety of anthropogenic sources, including pesticide use. Pesticides work by inhibiting bodily functions in their target pest species, though they frequently have unintentional impacts on other life forms in an ecosystem. Some researchers have evaluated these effects, but their studies mainly focus on finding an LC50 - a concentration that will kill 50% of their test species sample. However, these LC50 levels are often higher than what would be found in nature, and pesticides have been shown to still impact species at lower concentrations. Thus, this study attempted to summarize …
Pollinator Habitat On The University Of Richmond Campus: Assessing The Success Of Pollinator Meadows In The Gambles Mill Eco-Corridor, Mary Berner
Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects
Globally, many insect pollinator populations are declining in response to anthropogenic harms including habitat loss due to land-use change and urbanization, climate change, increasing pesticide use, invasive species introductions, and increased pathogen transmission. In order to protect these insects, and the benefits they provide through pollination, habitat must be protected. Much of the effort to protect insect pollinator habitat is occurring in urban areas, where pollinators may struggle to find the resources they need to survive. The purpose of this study was to assess the success of three pollinator meadows created within the Gambles Mill Eco-Corridor (Eco-Corridor) on the University …

Fractal And Edge-Based Techniques For Kidney Enhancement And Segmentation On Magnetic Resonance Images (Mri), Alaá Rateb Mahmoud Al-Shamasneh
Student Works (2020-2029)
Recently, many rapid developments in digital medical imaging have made further contributions to healthcare systems. However, the segmentation of regions of interest in medical images plays a vital role in assisting doctors in their medical diagnoses and for the early detection of disease. Since health issues related to the kidneys are increasing exponentially, this thesis focused on developing methods for the segmentation of MRI images of the kidney. Kidney images frequently suffer from low contrast, low resolution and noise, and are blur. Hence, it is necessary to enhance the images in order to improve the segmentation. Therefore, the current thesis …

A Case Of A Nonpetrous Cholesterol Granuloma Presenting As A Temporal Mass, Nathaniel Reeve, Jacob Kahane, Matthew Ng
School of Medicine Faculty Research
Objective. A case of a skull base cholesterol granuloma (CG) of the squamosal temporal bone. This is the first ever reported case of CG in a well-pneumatized squamous temporal bone. Design. Case report and review of the literature. Discussion. CG is a cystic mass typically found in the petrous apex and occasionally in the paranasal sinuses and orbit. Experience with the treatment of these expansile and inflammatory processes has largely been garnered from those occurring in the petrous apex, where they are surgically drained, via a transtympanic, transmastoid, or middle fossa approach. We report a case of cholesterol granuloma situated …
Probing The Impacts Of Ultra-Low Platinum Loadings On Membrane Degradation Mechanisms, Andre J. Spears
Probing The Impacts Of Ultra-Low Platinum Loadings On Membrane Degradation Mechanisms, Andre J. Spears
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Membrane chemical degradation is one of many factors that can impact fuel cell durability. The fuel cell’s performance and lifetime heavily depends on the membrane and its ability to maintain chemical and mechanical integrity. In Nafion® membranes, hydroxyl radicals are the primary cause of chemical membrane degradation as they attack the membrane’s polymer structure. Radical formation can ensue via peroxide decomposition at the cathode or gases reacting on Pt particles or contaminants like Fe (a fenton's reagent) within the membrane. As radicals attack the membrane’s polymer structure the membrane thins, and fluoride and sulfate ions are released. This consequently …

A Study Of Fremont Snake Valley Black-On-Gray Ceramics From Sites In Northern Utah And The Parowan Valley, Stephanie K.Y. Abo
Theses and Dissertations
Archaeologists widely argue that Fremont potters from the Parowan Valley, in southwestern Utah, manufactured Snake Valley pottery. For my thesis, I examined Snake Valley Black-on-gray rim sherds using neutron activation analysis, oxidation analysis, metric data, and statistical methods. I compared my results on Snake Valley Black-on-gray sherds from three archaeological sites within the Parowan Valley (Paragonah, Parowan, and Evans Mound) to my results on Snake Valley Black-on-gray sherds recovered from three archaeological sites over 250 kilometers to the north (South Temple, Block 49, and Wolf Village). I argue that the Snake Valley Black-on-gray ceramics from the northern sites are tradewares …

Instructional Case Studies In The Field Of Windfarm Optimization, N. Francesco Baker
Theses and Dissertations
Wind farm layout optimization is a multidisciplinary undertaking, requiring students and researchers to integrate many skillsets in order to optimize turbine placement. There is currently a lack of useful benchmarking exercises for participants in the field to compare the efficacy of their methods. This work details the construction and completion of a set of four case studies meant to satisfy this need, with the hope of providing some insight into useful layout optimization approaches. These case studies are intended to also serve as instructive introductory exercises with which newcomers researching wind energy may incrementally practice and increase their abilities. The first …

Elementary Teachers’ Responsiveness To Supporting Students’ Engineering Design Feedback, Jeffrey Radloff, Brenda Capobianco
Elementary Teachers’ Responsiveness To Supporting Students’ Engineering Design Feedback, Jeffrey Radloff, Brenda Capobianco
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Using engineering design to teach science requires teachers to engage in noticing, interpreting, and responding to students’ needs in real-time. While research has begun to focus on how elementary teachers do so, less is known about how teachers instructionally support and optimize students’ ideas through engineering design feedback. In this study we investigate what instructional moves two elementary teachers’ employ to leverage students’ ideas and reasoning and create opportunities for students to exchange design feedback. Data were gathered using classroom observations of teachers’ implementations of a design task focused on sound and energy transformation. Observations were coded for teachers’ use …

Margaret DeWeese-Boyd v. Gordon College
On Appeal from a Judgment of the Essex County Superior Court
From the Introduction
In the decision below, the trial court adopted a miserly understanding of the ministerial exception. It refused to apply it to a professor who taught social work at Gordon College, a Christian liberal arts school founded in 1889 which has a mission stating a "commitment to integrating faith and learning" and to "provide instruction in the Bible and other subjects" to prepare students "for the duties of the Christian ministry and other special forms of Christian work." Optimal Operation For A Faulted Pv System Using Genetic Algorithm., Sahar Sidky Kaddah
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The need to optimize the operation of PV systems is justified by the fact that PV systems are expensive to build, fuel- free source, and it is therefore natural that user of sulci systems would want them to perform it their most optimal point. Under the faulted condition, the power curve has a multi-picture; conventional optimization techniques can easily fall down in local optimal and initial point problems. Genetic algorithm as a global optimization technique is adopted to optimize photovoltaic power system under different faulted conditions. The proposed PV system and GA scheme is tested for the three-array PV system …

Evaluating Emission Characteristics From Vehicles At Road Test With Different Operating Conditions., A. El-Zahaby, A. Kabeel, A. Bawady, S. Wilson, A. Eidabaa
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The present work aims to introduce a new method to evaluate emission characteristics from vehicles al road test condition. The technique is characterized by introducing unique factors representing the equivalent toxic effect of the exhaust species. The method depends on measuring the concentration of exhaust species and calculating a factor called 'conditioned ton" taking into consideration the toxic weight of each species relative to CO. For this purpose, a series of measurements were carried out on a specified vehicle to prevent vehicle to-vehicle variation. The vehicle is equipped with an infrared gas analyzer and a magnetic pickup transducer to measure …

Soft Power And Human Development In Central Asia, Cheryl White
Soft Power And Human Development In Central Asia, Cheryl White
Honors Theses
Due to the wealth of natural resources and the strategic geographic location of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, these two countries have attracted a significant amount of soft power investments, including foreign direct investment, non-government organizations, and infrastructure development. This paper compares the fluctuations in the soft power measurements to the levels of human development in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The findings show highly similar changes in the amount soft power investments to the level of human development indicators, suggesting a strong correlation between the two measures. A methodological analysis and further data sets would be necessary to determine the connection though.
