Career And Technical Education Experiences Relationship To Technology Attitudes, Self-Regulation And Grit, Kendall Hartley, Xue Xing

Teaching and Learning Faculty Research

Career and Technical Education (CTE) secondary school experiences have a positive impact on career development and academic achievement. This study explores other positive impacts such as technology attitudes, persistence, and cognitive traits that are associated with career and academic success. This study investigated the relationships between high school CTE experiences of 103 pre-service education students and technology attitudes, grit, and self-regulated learning. The results demonstrate a statistically significant positive correlation between the number of CTE courses taken in high school and technology dependence. Similarly, there is a positive correlation between CTE courses and self-regulatory skills. Grit was positively correlated with …

Once abundant, the wild growing peyote cactus plants in Texas and Mexico are being drastically reduced and becoming scarce. Peyote, a slow growing cactus contains the hallucinogenic drug mescaline, is a sacred sacrament used in the Native Americans Church (NAC). It is also used religiously by various Indian tribes throughout the country of Mexico. Although peyote is classified as a controlled substance under federal and state laws, U.S. Congress granted NAC members a “peyote exemption” pursuant to the American Indian Religious Freedom Act to legally use peyote for religious purposes. Large natural language models (such as GPT-2 or T5) demonstrate impressive abilities across a range of general NLP tasks. Here, we show that the knowledge embedded in such models provides a useful inductive bias, not just on traditional NLP tasks, but also in the nontraditional task of training a symbolic reasoning engine. We observe that these engines learn quickly and generalize in a natural way that reflects human intuition. For example, training such a system to model block-stacking might naturally generalize to stacking other types of objects because of structure in the real world that has been partially captured by …

Endocrine disorders are more common and appear earlier in people with trisomy 21 (T21) than in the general population, with thyroid dysfunction being the most common, including both congenital and acquired hypothyroidism. The treatment for biotinidase deficiency, a condition that occurs in approximately 1 : 110,000 people, is with biotin (vitamin B7) supplementation. However, biotin can interfere with endocrine laboratory assays and cause falsely low thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and elevated free thyroxine (FT4) levels. This can interfere with the timely diagnosis and subsequent treatment of congenital hypothyroidism (CH). This case report describes an infant with partial biotinidase deficiency that was …

Availability of water for irrigated crops is driven by climate and policy, as moderated by public priorities and opinions. We explore how climate and water policy interact to influence water availability for cannabis (Cannabis sativa), a newly regulated crop in California, as well as how public discourse frames these interactions. Grower access to surface water covaries with precipitation frequency and oscillates consistently in an energetic 11–17 year wet-dry cycle. Assessing contemporary cannabis water policies against historic streamflow data showed that legal surface water access was most reliable for cannabis growers with small water rights ( < 600 m3) and …

There is a common assumption that experienced educators will automatically be effective mentors. My experience indicates that building competence in mentoring others requires conscious intent and effort. This article is a self-study action research account that explores mentoring practice from the mentor’s perspective. The study sets to explore the relational dynamics within mentoring relationships, with the focus of obtaining a deeper understanding of the mentor’s growth and the impact of this learning on mentor identity. Data collection was through personal reflective journals, mentoring conversations, and focus group interviews. In this paper, a novel analytic technique for the design of 2-D zero phase FIR circularly-symmetric filters is presented using the McClellan transformation. By this technique, a direct computation of the coefficients of McClellan transformation is derived by mapping the 2-D circular cutoff contour onto the /-D passband cut off and defining some deviation function, which is then freed to be zero for that contour. Then by comparing all the parameters in the resulting deviation function, one can easily determine the coefficients of McClellan transformation. AimTo explore how women and their partners navigate (pre)conception healthcare and the role of Natural Cycles fertility awareness technology in this process.MethodsIn-depth interviews with 24 cisgender women aged 24–43 years who had used Natural Cycles’ ‘Plan a Pregnancy’ mode, and six partners of Natural Cycles users, all cisgender men aged 30–39 years. Participants were recruited via direct messaging in the Natural Cycles app, social media and, for partners, snowball sampling. Purposive sampling was conducted to ensure diversity among participants. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. An iterative, inductive approach was adopted for thematic data analysis.ResultsNatural Cycles helped most users better …

It is desirable to speed up secure tunnel negotiations in constrained mediums where numerous clients are "competing" to form secure connections to destination servers or endpoints. In support of that objective, techniques are presented herein that minimize the authentication data that is transferred within encrypted tunnel handshakes under constrained conditions where the data can introduce unacceptable slowness or failures. Intramyocardial dissecting hematoma (IDH) is a rare complication of myocardial infarction (MI). It can affect the left ventricular free wall, the right ventricle, or the interventricular septum.
We report a case of a 58-year-old man with an IDH following an acute anterior wall myocardial infarction detected by echocardiography and confirmed by Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR).
