Background/aim: To determine the effect of different doses of capsaicin on AgNOR protein synthesis in human colon adenocarcinoma derivate from colon cancer (Caco-2 cell). Materials and methods: In this experimental study, after the cultured of Caco-2 cell line, the cells are divided into 4 groups as control and different capsaicin exposed doses (25uµ, 50uµ, and 75uµ). Mean AgNOR number and total AgNOR area/nuclear area (TAA/NA) were calculated. Results: A significant differences were detected between control and capsaicin (50uµ) (P = 0.001), between control and capsaicin (75uµ) (P = 0.000), between capsaicin (25uµ) and capsaicin (50uµ) (P = 0.001) and between …

Background and aim: In patients undergoing congenital cardiac surgery, it is crucial to maintain oxygen demand-consumption balance. Central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) is a useful indicator of oxygen demand and consumption balance which is an invasive method. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive, continuous monitoring technique that measures regional tissue oxygenation. NIRS that is placed over the internal jugular vein cutaneous area (NIRSijv) has the potential to show ScvO2 indirectly. In this study, we aimed to determine the correlation between ScvO2 with NIRSijv in pediatric patients undergoing congenital cardiac surgery.Materials and methods: Fifty children participated in the study. Four patients …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The goal of this study was to compare differences in hand and wrist shapes and to evaluate these according to growth and allometry in children on radiographs related to bone age.Materials and methods: The study included 263 males and 189 females. A total of 452 left hand and wrist radiographs were retrospectively collected. Standard anatomical landmarks marked on radiographs. Results: There were seen to be significant differences in comparisons of hand and wrist shapes according to sex (P = 0.009). The most suitable model in the growth models was seen as the Gompertz growth model for both females and males …

Background/aim: To investigate possible protective effects of Ankaferd Blood Stopper® (ABS) in an experimental liver ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) model. Materials and methods: The study was carried out on 30 female rats separated into 3 groups as sham, control (IRI), and treatment (IRI + ABS) groups. In the IRI + ABS group, 0.5 mL/day ABS was given for 7 days before surgery. In the IRI and IRI + ABS groups, the hepatic pedicle was clamped for 30 min to apply ischemia. Then, after opening the clamp, 90-min reperfusion of the liver was provided. Blood and liver tissue samples were taken …

Background/aim: Colchicine is the mainstay of treatment in FMF. However, in daily practice it is not easy to maintain effective colchicine doses in a substantial number of patients due to its side effects. In this study, we aimed to investigate prevalence and risk factors for colchicine side effects that limit optimal drug dosing and cause permanent discontinuation. Materials and methods: All patients were recruited from "FMF in Central Anatolia" (FiCA) cohort, 915 adults with a minimum follow-up time of 6 months during which they had obeyed all treatment instructions. Demographic and anthropometric data, FMF disease characteristics, disease severity, complications, and …

Background/aim: The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the resting state hippocampal connectivity with language areas and to correlate them with laterality index calculations on single subject basis, hence to present hippocampal lateralization for language with rs-fMRI.Materials and methods: Task based and rs-fMRI data were gathered from a total of 45 subjects in 3T scanner. BrainVoyager QX, SPM, and CONN softwares were used for data analysis. LI score of each subject was calculated and converted into normalized LI score (nLI). Intrahemispheric rs-connectivity analysis was performed between hippocampus and Broca's regions on both sides. Correlation between these variables was …
