© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Being a multidrug-resistant and an invasive pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the major causes of nosocomial infections in the current healthcare system. It has been recognized as an agent of pneumonia, septicemia, meningitis, urinary tract and wound infections, and is associated with high mortality. Pathogenesis in A. baumannii infections is an outcome of multiple virulence factors, including porins, capsules, and cell wall lipopolysaccharide, enzymes, biofilm production, motility, and iron-acquisition systems, among others. Such virulence factors help the organism to resist stressful environmental conditions and enable development of severe infections. Parallel …

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) can be useful tools for public safety agencies during crime or vehicle accident scene investigations if it can provide value to the resource-constrained agency. The speed of data collection, while minimizing first responder risk, while sustaining an acceptable level of accuracy and precision compared to other tools is where the agency may find value. During a recent homicide investigation in Florida, a UAS provided saved 81% in law enforcement labor hours with an acceptable level of accuracy compared to traditional methods. The purpose of this research was to compare UAS to determine if there were differences …

Increasing Airports' On-Time Arrival Performance Through Airport Capacity And Efficiency Indicators, Nurettin Dinler, William B. Rankin
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
To optimize the U.S. airports’ operational performance, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provides various metric values (i.e., average gate arrival delays, the average number of daily aircraft operations, effective gate-to-gate times, and taxi-in and taxi-out times) attributed to NextGen programs. The U.S. airports are now expected of designing more efficient arrival and departure procedures as part of their NextGen capabilities. This study, therefore, examined the relationship between airport efficiency and capacity indicators, provided by the FAA as metric values, and the U.S. airports’ on-time arrival rates over the period from 2009 to 2017. To test the relationship and build a …

Identify Aerodynamic Derivatives Of The Airplane Attitude Channel Using A Spiking Neural Network, Nguyen Quang Vinh, Nguyen Duc Thanh, Hoang Minh Dac, Truong Dang Khoa
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
The paper proposes a method for identifying aerodynamic coefficient derivatives of aircraft attitude channel using spiking neural network (SNN) and Gauss-Newton algorithm based on data obtained from actual flights. Using SNN combination with Gauss-Newton iterative calculation algorithm allows the identification of aerodynamic coefficient derivatives in a nonlinear model for aerodynamic parameters with higher accuracy and faster calculation time. The paper proposes an algorithm to train the SNN multi-layer network by Normalized Spiking Error Back Propagation (NSEBP), in which, in the forward propagation period, the time of output spikes is calculating by solving quadratic equations instead of detection by traditional methods. …

Performance Characteristics Design Of Pulsed Plasma Thrusters For Drag Counter-Reacting, Dr. Sam Dakka
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Determining the performance characteristics of off the shelf pulsed plasma thrusters to enhance the life time of low earth orbiting platforms was investigated theoretically. Pulsed plasma thruster analysis was accomplished through development of correlations from historical data that distinguished between breech fed propellant to side fed propellant designs. Based on semi-empirical equations the power required by the thruster to counter react the drag was estimated and mapped for 1U to 27U CubeSat configurations for altitude ranging between 200km to 600km. It appears that the power required is dependent on the feeding delivery system design. For side fed designs the power …

Prediction Of Gate In Time Of Scheduled Flights And Schedule Conformance Using Machine Learning-Based Algorithms, Deepudev Sahadevan, Palanisamy P Dr, Varun P. Gopi Dr, Manjunath K. Nelli Mr, Asok Kumar K Mr
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Prediction of Gate to Gate block time for scheduled flights is considered as one of the challenging tasks in Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM)system. Establishing an effective and practically reliable model to manage the problem of block time variation is a significant work. The airlines do tend to pad or inflate block time to Actual Block time to calculate Schedule block times which is approved by aviation regulator. This will lead to flaws in air traffic flow strategic decision-making and in turn affect the efficiency, estimation and undesirable delays, which leads to traffic congestion and inefficient ground delay programs. This …

A Looming Pilot Shortage: It Is Time To Revisit Regulations, Christopher L. Caraway
A Looming Pilot Shortage: It Is Time To Revisit Regulations, Christopher L. Caraway
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Forecasts predict we will need 790,000 pilots by 2037. This prediction means airlines will need to increase pilot levels by 267%. Finding a solution to this pilot shortage requires the aviation community to address limiting regulatory and other core factors. Many have claimed that 1,500-hour rule and mandatory retirements are critical issues contributing to the pilot shortage. However, the data does not support these claims. Instead, trends in pilot population levels and safety records indicate these regulations are only effecting the demographics of the current pilot population. The shift in the pilot population will harm future airline operations if the …

An Evaluation Of The Operational Restrictions Imposed To Congonhas Airport By Civil Aviation Instruction121-1013, Glanski Pacheco, Jr., Marcus Camargo, Leila Halawi
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Due to aircraft accidents, in 2008, operational restrictions were imposed on Congonhas airport by IAC 121-1013. These restrictions sought to create a balance between flight safety and operational efficiency. The purpose of this research was to investigate the results of the operational restrictions. The researchers calculated the landing performance (using specific software), taking into account particular aircraft system failures that increase landing distance. The results indicated that the measures imposed by the IAC have little or no effect on operational safety. Additionally, the restrictions created operational complexity for the airport and reduced its efficiency by impacting airline costs. Finally, the …
