A Comparison Of Bdsm Sadism And Everyday Sadism In Multiple Adult Populations, Jennifer Erickson
A Comparison Of Bdsm Sadism And Everyday Sadism In Multiple Adult Populations, Jennifer Erickson
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Research has begun to investigate subclinical levels of sadism including “everyday sadism:” an enjoyment of cruelty in normal, everyday situations. Thus far, subclinical sadism has been conceptualized as inherently antisocial, as with Internet trolls. I examined a potentially prosocial manifestation of sadism: self-identified sadists in the BDSM community who cause pain only to consenting partners. 532 BDSM practitioners and nonpractitioners completed measures of everyday sadism with consent explicit, nonconsent explicit, or consent ambiguous, and known correlates of everyday sadism (empathy, HEXACO traits, and Dark Triad traits). Consistent with hypotheses, the general adult sample demonstrated negative correlations between everyday sadism and …
Multi-Component Material For Solar Energy Conversion And Fundamentals Of Lead Acid Batteries, Crystal Ferels
Multi-Component Material For Solar Energy Conversion And Fundamentals Of Lead Acid Batteries, Crystal Ferels
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Synthesis of complex inorganic materials is desirable because their complex composition allows more degrees of freedom and tunability, whose properties differ from their parent components. As an expansion on this concept, we synthesized a quinary compound Ce3FeWS3O6, using a molten flux method and a solvothermal method. The compound crystallizes into a hexagonal crystal system with space group P63/m. Its electric partition shows an anion with the form [(Ce3+)3W6+(S2-)3(O2-)6]3- forcing the transition metal Fe3+ state and leaving no conduction electrons, making the material a semiconductor. This compound is the right candidate as photoelectric material capable of absorbing photons from the solar …
From Mcinnis To Adequacy: The Relationship Between School Funding Litigation And Illinois K-12 Public Education Funding Policy, Joel Filas
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Illinois K-12 public school funding has long been characterized by large inter-district disparities in per-pupil expenditures. A primary reason for this characterization was the Illinois legislature’s heavy reliance on local property tax within the various school funding formulas historically used to determine school revenues. The heavy reliance on local property taxes as the primary source of funding for Illinois schools has contributed to one of the largest funding gaps between the state’s highest and lowest property wealth school districts in the United States. The heavy reliance on local property taxes has led to low property wealth school districts receiving a …
The Emotions Of Science: Using Social Media To Gauge Public Emotions Toward Research Topics, Cole C. Freeman
The Emotions Of Science: Using Social Media To Gauge Public Emotions Toward Research Topics, Cole C. Freeman
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Online and in the real world, communities are bonded together by emotional consensus around core issues. Emotional responses to scientific findings often play a pivotal role in these core issues. When there is too much diversity of opinion on topics of science, emotions flare up and give rise to conflict. This conflict threatens positive outcomes for research. Emotions have the power to shape how people process new information. They can color the public's understanding of science, motivate policy positions, even change lives. And yet little work has been done to evaluate the public's emotional response to science using quantitative methods. …
"Don't Look At Her, She's Mad": Mama And Frankenstein Reveal Modern-Day Preoccupations, Caitlin Gamble
"Don't Look At Her, She's Mad": Mama And Frankenstein Reveal Modern-Day Preoccupations, Caitlin Gamble
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Viewing the film Mama (2013) through the lens of a certain Gothic text, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, reveals similar fears of the feminine alongside the focus of the nature of the in-between. These commonalities between the texts reveal an emerging trend in modern monster-horror films—the narrative-driven analysis of the role of the other and multiculturalism in the social consciousness. In this paper, I examine how Mama as an Imperial Gothic film builds on the tradition of indigenous stories, like La Llorona, and the Gothic. By referencing and combining these histories in the genre markers, it uses motherhood and the other to …
Vulnerability, Trauma, And Testimony In American Women’S Literature: A Long History, Jennifer L. Fife
Vulnerability, Trauma, And Testimony In American Women’S Literature: A Long History, Jennifer L. Fife
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This study examines the effects of vulnerability and trauma in American women’s literature across the intersections of genre, race, and time. In this dissertation I have applied a feminist long history approach to examine women’s literature from the seventeenth through twenty-first centuries together inspired by Mary Beard’s theory that compartmentalizing women’s history ignores long-range patterns and contributions. I have assembled the beginnings of a canon of women’s trauma literature that allows women writers to form a multi-century discourse community wherein trauma and recovery may occur. This analysis applies twentieth century medical research about trauma and recovery, particularly that of Judith …

On The Self-Force Problem Of Point-Like Charged Particles In Classical Electrodynamics, Kevin J. Hamilton
On The Self-Force Problem Of Point-Like Charged Particles In Classical Electrodynamics, Kevin J. Hamilton
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The problem of a point-like charged particle’s self-interaction force has been along-standing problem in the field of classical electrodynamics. For over a century, physicists have unsuccessfully developed a satisfactory solution until recently. Weexpand on the work done by Gralla et. al. [1] in order to establish a smooth andrelativistically correct formulation of point-like charged particles in motion and shedlight on related problems and applications, particularly the motion of elementary par-ticles with magnetic dipoles through non-uniform static magnetic fields. We conductnumerical simulations in order to quantify the magnitude of the perturbations fromthis self-force due to the new equations of motion relative to …

Projective Splitting Methods For Maximal Monotone Mappings In Hilbert Spaces, Oday Hazaimah
Projective Splitting Methods For Maximal Monotone Mappings In Hilbert Spaces, Oday Hazaimah
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, novel approaches for solving convex nonsmooth optimization, variational inequalities and inclusion problems are studied. The main contributions of the dissertation are given in Chapter 4 and Chapter 5. The two proposed iterations in Chapter 4, Half-Extragradient algorithm (HEG) and its accelerated version, are a natural modification of the classical Extragradient algorithm (EG)
when the composite objective function is a sum of three convex functions. EG evaluates the smooth operator twice per iteration via proximal mappings, and also, it allows larger step sizes. One of the main advantages of the proposed scheme is to avoid evaluating an
extragradient …
Bayesian Approach To Finding The Most Likely Circuit Structure, Shannon Harms
Bayesian Approach To Finding The Most Likely Circuit Structure, Shannon Harms
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Systems, and their reliabilities, depend on the reliabilities of the components that theyare composed of, and in this paper we want to nd the system structure that is the most likely given observed data. Bayesian methods were utilized in order to discover the posterior means, or observed reliabilities, of both the components and the systems. Assuming the serial and parallel system structures have independent components, we calculated system reliabilities based on observed component reliabilities by using the multiplication and addi- tion probability rules. We are then able to expand upon the numerical comparison method through a maximum likelihood analysis that …
The Effect Of Tax Policy On Firm Behavior And Executive Pay Components, Sheikh Touhidul Haque
The Effect Of Tax Policy On Firm Behavior And Executive Pay Components, Sheikh Touhidul Haque
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The first chapter of this dissertation is motivated by the cross-sectional differences in the willingness of firms to minimize tax based on their financial structure. We investigate whether ”financially constrained” firms increase tax aggressiveness compared to it’s immediate ”less constrained” condition in response to an exogenous state tax increase. We also test whether our prediction holds true for financially distressed firms. Our identification strategy exploits 43 increases in corporate income tax rates staggered across 23 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., between 1989 and 2012. Our results reveal that constrained firms (as ranked by Kaplan & Zingales (1997) index (KZ index …

What Is Literature? An Investigation Of Definitions, Symptoms, And Routes Toward Literariness In English, Maxwell Robert Hoover
What Is Literature? An Investigation Of Definitions, Symptoms, And Routes Toward Literariness In English, Maxwell Robert Hoover
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This project asks how and why certain works have received the label of “literature” while others have not. The project begins in Chapter 1 by examining seven glossaries of literary terms to define literature by means of understanding its parts, by which I mean the classes that literature has been divided into (e.g., genres). The overall finding of this chapter is that, while the glossarists seem to converge in their definitions of some terms, they greatly diverge in defining others. This divergence creates a problem in defining literature as a whole, because glossarists do not even reach a consensus in …
Liberalism And The Problem Of Compassion In Rousseau, Smith, And Tocqueville, Lewis Hoss
Liberalism And The Problem Of Compassion In Rousseau, Smith, And Tocqueville, Lewis Hoss
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Liberal democracy has historically owed its attractiveness to the promise of a more compassionate society structured around pluralistic and tolerant principles. Yet recent events in western democracies seem to indicate a lack of compassionate social bonds. Why has a politics of compassion failed to materialize and what must be done to make good on the original promise of liberal democracy? To answer these questions, I provide a historically and theoretically grounded account of compassion as a principle of liberalism, with special attention to the political thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Adam Smith, and Alexis de Tocqueville. In particular, I seek to …

Perceived Dissimilarity And Meeting Interpersonal Engagement: A Within-Person Investigation, Ruth Aniekan Imose
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
I tested a new model of perceived dissimilarity on meeting interpersonal engagement drawing from models of diversity and emotional labor and conceptualizations of interpersonal engagement in the literature. In doing so, this investigation merged the burgeoning meeting science field with more recent focuses and methods from the emotional labor literature to advance our understanding of how diversity impacts the individual experience of dissimilarity in the workplace. Furthering the notion of dynamism in diversity’s effects, the current study investigated meetings as a context that may affect shifts in one’s perception of dissimilarity due to variable attendee composition.
The perception of dissimilarity …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Audre Lorde’s (1984) essay titled “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House” is suitable for describing the intent and rationale for this research. My purpose was to use my voice to interpret experiences that assisted in dismantling the master’s house (dominant group) by sharing insights and unraveling the layers (onion peels as a metaphor) of my experiences with race, gender, and age on my academic journey to complete my doctoral degree at a predominantly White university to report a truth that denies the context of power and race in our society.
Higher education continues to wrestle with addressing …

The dynamic …
Investigation Of The Impact Of Liquid Cooling On The Integrity Of Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuits (3d-Ics), A K M Toufiqul Islam
Investigation Of The Impact Of Liquid Cooling On The Integrity Of Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuits (3d-Ics), A K M Toufiqul Islam
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The thesis investigates the dynamics of liquid cooling of the Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuit (3D-IC). Using 3D ICs is one of the most viable solutions for achieving high integration density of integrated circuits, without facing the unavoidable problems arising from shrinking the device dimensions. However, 3D ICs suffer from other types of problems. One of these problems is the heat generation creating extremely hot areas called hot spots. For high hot spots, effective thermal management techniques need to be developed. Conventional thermal management of surface cooling of chips using heat sinks and fans may reduce the surface temperature, but the embedded …

Laminate-Like Behavior Of An Additively Manufactured Polymer With Underlying Bioinspired Architecture, Flavio Jonuzaj
Laminate-Like Behavior Of An Additively Manufactured Polymer With Underlying Bioinspired Architecture, Flavio Jonuzaj
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Laminates are a class of composite materials in which several unidirectional laminae are stacked together to create a material with a clear layer-by-layer architecture. Traditionally, each lamina is itself a composite consisting of aligned fibers, such as cellulose, graphite, or glass, embedded within a polymer, ceramic, or metal host matrix. These materials are unique in the sense that their engineering properties can be greatly varied simply by changing the stacking order of lamina within the laminate. While there are several traditional manufacturing approaches for laminates, recent research has focused on assessing the feasibility of using additive manufacturing techniques to create …

Depression And Anxiety In A Female Adolescent Population With Sources Of Social Support Latent Profiles, Kathleen Kelly
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Social support is associated with various outcomes such as depression and anxiety. Less work has investigated how support received from various sources cumulatively is associated with internalizing symptoms. Research suggests that above other sources, parents and peers are the most strongly associated with internalizing outcomes. Looking at female adolescents specifically, the current study explored 1) what patterns of social support across sources emerge in a female adolescent sample, and 2) how do depressive and anxiety symptoms vary based on those patterns of social support? The study utilized Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) on data collected from a female high school sample …
Relative Deprivation And Xenophobia: Patterns Of Anti-Vietnamese Radicalism Among Cambodia's Opposition Parties From 1993 - Present, Ratanak Khun
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Anti-Vietnamese sentiment has been the most highly displayed rhetoric by generations of Cambodian politicians. In contemporary Cambodia, the opposition parties have actively engaged in tirades aimed at the Vietnamese and the ruling CPP which came to power with Vietnamese military support in 1979. How are we to explain the hatred against the Vietnamese in Cambodia? From the examination of the activities of the BLDP, the royalist FUNCINPEC, and the CNRP, we conclude that relative deprivation of a role of power on the political stage emerges as a potential factor that explains why members of Cambodian opposition parties have taken a …
