Presentations and other scholarship

This presentation describes the evolution of a bystander workshop series within a large private university. The 2018 NASEM Report stresses the importance of creating organizational cultures of active support where the social norm is for harassing behaviors to be rare. For several years as part of an ADVANCE institutional transformation effort, workshops have been created to build bystander awareness and skill while exploring its history, research, benefits, and challenges. In 2016, a research focused and story gathering workshop was facilitated by an external consultant followed by a theatrical Playback Theatre based bystander workshop for faculty and staff where participant stories …

Collection of essays by Felix Bernstein and Gabe Rubin, Bridget Crone, Adam Pugh, and Lucy Reynolds, exploring ideas around artists’ film and video in relation to their exhibition. These essays were commissioned by Dr Anya Lewin and Dr Kayla Parker (editors) in response to the Gallery in the Cinema initiative at Plymouth Arts Centre, led by its artistic director Ben Borthwick, which presented a programme of eight artists’ moving image works (listed on page 2) shown in the Centre’s cinema on a daily loop between 2016 and 2017. This phenomenological study highlighted the perceptions of principals impacted by techno-stress due to continuous connectivity to the office. The purpose of this study was to gain insight as to how principal’s lives are impacted by continuous connectivity and techno-stress. The sample for this study was K-12 public school principals, in the state of Arkansas, whose lives have been impacted by continuous connectivity and techno-stress. The sample size included twelve participants. Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

In this article we present a severe case of Fournier's gangrene (FG) that affected a 64-year-old male patient, with no other known comorbidities. FG is a type of necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal and genital regions, that affects mostly males in the 5th-7th decades, with mortality rates that reach 70%. The infection usually advances through the superficial fascial layers of the perineum and abdomen and affects the skin. In our case the infection also affected the spermatic fasciae and advanced in the abdominal and pelvic cavities, abdominal muscles, and surrounding soft tissues. This year, COVID-19 restrictions altered experiential learning opportunities, but students adapted. When plans for his internship project changed, Gardner-Webb student Thomas Manning, of Boiling Springs, N.C., adjusted and grew in the process.

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Pedestrian Safety Intervention Program: Behavioral And Observational Approach, Deep Patel

Pedestrians are considered as the most vulnerable road users. On a nationwide scale, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 6,075 pedestrian fatalities and more than 85,000 pedestrian injuries as a result of traffic crashes in 2017. This study provides national and state pedestrian fatality statistics, a systematic literature review of pedestrian injury severity, observational (video-based) & behavioral (survey-based) evaluation of the Street-Smart NJ pedestrian safety intervention campaign. Street-Smart NJ is a public education, awareness, and behavioral change campaign program that aims to improve pedestrian safety by increasing awareness of pedestrian safety risks and improving compliance with …

Although COVID-19 health guidelines changed the dynamics of rehearsals, the Gardner-Webb University Department of Theatre Arts accepted the unique challenges. A cast of 11 students will present “All in the Timing” at 8 p.m. on Oct. 7-11. Directed by Dr. Chris Nelson, assistant professor of theatre arts, the production will be performed on two stages set up outside of Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center, 116 Lutz-Yelton Drive. Folding chairs will be available or audience members may bring their own.

When analyzing economic development, we must consider both the factors that can be changed through policy and those that cannot. This report includes our model for understanding and predicting economic growth in U.S. mid-sized regional economies to analyze structural and policy-based factors among similar regional economies. Our research used a multi-stage process that involved collecting 43 variables on a variety of topics that are associated with regional growth, such as educational attainment, business composition, regional assets, and quality of life. In total, our mid-sized regional economies encompass 135 metro areas, and includes populations spanning from 352,823 to 3.9 million. We …

Dramatist Douglas Turner Ward's innovative play Day of Absence first premiered in November 1965 in New York City and has seen a recent national revival, having been staged by theatre companies in Berkeley, New York, Washington, D. C., Omaha, and Chicago, as well as the Maitisong Festival in Gaborone, Botswana. It stands as a creative response to the African American civil rights situation after the 1964 act. Ward explores questions of Black labor and mobility and, in doing so, creates opportunities to invert the dynamics that have historically characterized U. S. society.

Demystifying Sensory Processing To Promote Effective Interprofessional And Caregiver Collaboration, Janis Leinfuss, Erin O'Hara

Student Journal of Occupational Therapy

Research shows collaboration and coaching with caregivers and educators positively impacts growth in occupational performance. Better understanding of this additional role that occupational therapy practitioners play; when working with children with sensory processing challenges, is vital to properly advocate for strategies and resources to help them reach their personal trajectory.

This article offers insight into the importance of removing professional jargon to facilitate effective interprofessional collaboration. Specific strategies for making coaching and training sessions for sensory processing content relatable and meaningful to educators and caregivers are also provided.
