Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

To the American founding generation, the history of classical antiquity—of Rome in particular—not only supplied a common vernacular capable of transcending geographical and social boundaries, but also imparted important lessons regarding statecraft and the destinies of nations. Over the course of the 1760s and 1770s, the founders increasingly regarded America as the inheritor of Roman imperium, politically, culturally, and even religiously. Thus, alongside British constitutionalism, Enlightenment philosophy, and Christian resistance theory, the memory of Rome contributed to the declaration of American independence from Great Britain.

Although Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) is now common practice across various surgical specialties, the adoption of its principles has only recently gained momentum in liver and kidney transplantation. The publication of relevant ERAS guidelines in these specialties has undoubtedly facilitated the assimilation of evidence in support of ERAS components, the paucity of which had been viewed as a barrier to the implementation of ERAS in transplantation. In conjunction, institutionally-developed ERAS pathways have provided pragmatic examples of how these principles can be adopted within transplant practice. The outbreak of the WWII severely disrupted Mediterranean maritime transport, curtailing the inflow of foodstuffs and processed commodities to small import- dependent economies. This paper examines British Cyprus as a case study, arguing that wartime supply chain crisis prompted both policy and entrepreneurial shifts that not only safeguarded subsistence, but also laid foundations for postwar development. Colonial emergency measures (rationing, price controls, and food campaigns) sought to manage trade bottlenecks, while British policy actively redirected demand toward locally processed food products. This turn to import substitution was reinforced by Cyprus’s incorporation into the Middle East Supply Center in Cairo, which …

This paper examines feasting in two specific contexts: the sagas of the early Irish medieval period, and the diplomatic history of the Irish state. Far from being decorative or incidental, feasting is shown to be a system of commensal politics that converts uncertainty into opportunity as well as symbolic capital. In the examples explored, the shared meal is shown to be not just a convivial gathering but a means through which authority is demonstrated, crises negotiated or averted, and relationships renewed.

Among them, one notes a recurring emphasis on eating scenes that reflect a lurking existential crisis illustrated by the characters’ failure to follow expected standards of commensality. The paper focuses on the story of the Fra i Monti winery in Terelle, a small village located in Italy's Comino Valley, in the province of Frosinone, about 110 km southeast of Rome. This is a paradigmatic territory of agricultural Italy, where between the early 1950s and the mid-1970s, industrialisation and urbanisation shaped the figure of the “metal- mezzadro,” half factory worker and half farmer in the fields, leading to the progressive abandonment of the countryside because it did not offer a secure salary and to the relentless disappearance of farming and wine-making traditions. Outdoor open spaces between university buildings support students' community interactions and academic achievements. However, in hot-humid climate zones, some of these spaces lack activity and experience social withdrawal due to thermal discomfort. This is seen on the University of Basrah campus. To address this, the study aimed to identify the most suitable climate-adaptive design pattern to improve thermal comfort and, in turn, enhance students' social presence in the University of Basrah's neglected, peripheral outdoor campus spaces. Francis Drake’s journey around the world between 1577 and 1580 is renowned as one of the most famous voyages in history. The circumnavigation was a great achievement for England, but the official story Queen Elizabeth and her Privy Council maintained for nine years was that Drake was a pirate, and that the treasure he captured on the voyage would be returned to Spain. Upon his return, information about the voyage and his route were suppressed and the crew was sworn to secrecy: they were not to reveal where they travelled on ‘pain of death’. A Pot of Gold at the End of the Assembly Line integrates icons of mass-manufacturing with signifiers of joyful work, stimulating a dialogue between industrial and craft labour. Visible traces of the making process left on these works conjure a spectral ‘maker’, implied by the fingerprints, toolmarks, assembly, and conspicuous decision making of an ‘other’. As we relate to these signifiers as opportunities for our own bodily action, this spectre speaks in our own voice. This integrative literature review examines the relationship between drama therapy and self-efficacy, and its implications for academic success. Traditional measures of achievement emphasize outcomes while overlooking the psychological processes that influence student engagement and persistence. Drawing on interdisciplinary literature, this review synthesizes research on how drama therapy supports self-efficacy through embodiment, role exploration, and structured play. These processes create safe, participatory environments where individuals can rehearse new behaviors and reconstruct self-perceptions. They also align with key mechanisms of self-efficacy development, including mastery experiences and emotional regulation. In embodied practice, the artist’s experience and body become the medium through which thought and expression take form, not as illustration, but as primary material. Performance art has long occupied an unstable position within contemporary art: celebrated in retrospect, underfunded in practice, and selectively institutionalized. Its marginality has never been evenly distributed. Certain bodies, female, racialized, aging, non-normative, have remained further outside the archive than others, their work harder to collect, harder to value, and easier to forget. To work in performance, particularly as a woman, is to work within that contradiction.
