It presents the Afro-American poet, Nikki Giovanni, her revolutionary temperament and rejection of racial discrimination and discrimination against the woman in poems like “The True Import of Present Dialogue, Black vs Negro,” “Nikki-Rosa,” “Poems for Black Boys” and “A Litany for Peppe.” The poet mirrors her time for its sex and race prejudice, and for its daily violence and unpredictable atrocities. The twentieth century belonged to percussion. In previous centuries, percussion performed a supporting function with its primary role being to accentuate chordal changes and reinforce the beat. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries orchestras expanded in size and instrumentation with percussion taking on a more prominent role, particularly in the works of composers such as Debussy, Stravinsky, and Mahler. It was at this moment in time that percussion assumed a new and unique role to express changes in colour and timbre, alongside its rhythmic function. The percussion repertoire of the twentieth century reflected the Zeitgeist, and composers exploited …

The image of the clown has held a myriad of aesthetic positions throughout Western history. Traces of this figure are reflected in the current image of the modern and more contemporary version of the popular clown. From the American hobo and ragged carpet clowns, to Bozo the Children’s clown and The Simpson’s Krusty the clown, the modern western clown that we see today has adopted theatrical and material components of historical figures and has been used as guides for their characters. Female suffragists in the United States at the turn of the 20th Century fought to gain more protection under the law than the laws had granted women in entire history of the nation. The suffragist movement symbolically began at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, in which the "Declaration of Sentiments" dictated women’s precise requests for equality. This early industrialism-era suffrage campaign focused mainly on the East coast of the United States, while the nation expanded into the West. Ironically, while the first generation suffragists experienced many failures in their efforts for suffrage, the second generation found many successes in …

Journal of International Women's Studies

We began this project intending to theorise the respectability politics within the Irish Repeal (pro-choice) movement through the lenses of postcolonial and Black feminism, and through the experiences of members of Pinjra Tod, a movement seeking the right to mobility for Indian women students. Instead, we found ourselves excavating the inextricable links between respectability politics and the representational politics of academic knowledge production (Cruz in Collins-White et al 2015) in relation to Irish Women’s Studies and the racialised politics of representation in the Repeal campaign. This paper will discuss multidisciplinary and experimental pedagogical case studies that place the importance of the body firmly back into architectural education. The advanced digital technologies currently employed almost universally in architectural education generate increasingly virtual and augmented design, resulting from processes that tend to be devoid of imagination of the body. The case studies discussed in this paper involved students’ direct participation in performative acts during the design process, facilitating positive transformative learning through direct experience.
