University Of South Dakota Zero Waste Atlas Campus Assessment 2020, Post-Landfill Action Network Jan 2020

University Of South Dakota Zero Waste Atlas Campus Assessment 2020, Post-Landfill Action Network

Sustainability & Environment Projects

In Summer of 2020, the University of South Dakota worked with the Post-Landfill Action Network (PLAN) to support Anna Moore, the Campus Recycling Coordinator and a graduate student in the Department of Sustainability & Environment, to conduct a holistic assessment of the campus’ waste management system. Anna used PLAN’s Zero Waste Atlas Program, a program designed to help campuses assess and streamline campus systems for materials management, to collect the information used to inform this report. This abridged report offers a snapshot of existing policy, programs, and infrastructure, illustrates ideal material flows throughout a campus, and proposes a few broad …

Diversity As Contingent: An Intersectional Ethnographic Interrogation Of And Resistance Against Neoliberal Academia’S Exploitation Of Contingent Faculty In General Education Diversity Courses, Kelly Louise Opdycke Jan 2020

Diversity As Contingent: An Intersectional Ethnographic Interrogation Of And Resistance Against Neoliberal Academia’S Exploitation Of Contingent Faculty In General Education Diversity Courses, Kelly Louise Opdycke

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Since its inception in the late 1970s, neoliberal academia has increasingly relied in under-paid contingent faculty to carry its teaching workload. During this same time, neoliberal academia began to take up ‘diversity’ as a way to sell its brand. This dissertation stands at the crux between diversity branding and the exploitation of contingent faculty. Specifically, I explore how teaching General Education diversity courses through precarity impacts contingent faculty affectively and emotionally. Michel Foucault (1979) describes those who live in the context of neoliberalism as homo economicus, or entrepreneur of the self. As one becomes stuck in contingency, they begin to …

Shakespeare’S Cosmology On The Supernatural: All Is Illusion, Yiju Liao Jan 2020

Shakespeare’S Cosmology On The Supernatural: All Is Illusion, Yiju Liao

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines how Shakespeare approached elements of the supernatural – ghosts, madness, and witchcraft – in his plays. The aftermath of the England’s break from the Catholic Church led to societal upheaval in the way early modern England viewed the supernatural. Prior to this break, Europeans interpreted the supernatural through the religious explanations provided by the Church. However, the Reformation opened the gates for scholars, physicians, and theologists to offer up non-religious explanations for supernatural phenomena. In England in particular, tropes and fears towards the supernatural were colored by the foreign threats against Queen Elizabeth I by the Catholic …

Eros And Logos: Servant-Leadership, Feminism, And The Critical Unities Of Gender Well-Being, Shann Ray Ferch

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Aquestion was asked of me by the inimitable Nike Imoru, a North Londoner raised in Nigeria, an exceptional casting director, and the first woman and person of color to gain a tenured position in the Theatre Department at Hull in the UK (when she was only twenty-eight.) The question: What is your understanding of the masculine in America? Nike’s presence is water from a deep well. Her direction elicited the following.

The absurd edicts initially issued by several governors, including those of Michigan and New York, prohibiting physicians from ordering hydroxychloroquine for patients suspected of or diagnosed with COV-19 are reprehensible. Their reasoning is beyond the pale.

Hydroxychloroquine was first approved by the FDA in 1955 and has a remarkable safety record in its use as a preventative for malaria and in the treatment of several immunologic and/or light induced diseases. Its use came about serendipitously, and its mechanism of action is unclear, but the fact remains that it seems to work.

Joby Talbot’S Path Of Miracles: Musical And Dramatic Analysis, Joseph Stuligross Jan 2020

Joby Talbot’S Path Of Miracles: Musical And Dramatic Analysis, Joseph Stuligross

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This project investigates Joby Talbot’s choral composition Path of Miracles, focusing on interpretive insight as well as musical and extra-musical understandings related to the subject matter, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain known as the Camino de Santiago. It explores the sources and methods of generating dramatic intensity and seeks to understand how the composer achieved particular dramatic effects. The project proceeds along two related modes of inquiry. The first involves musical evaluation, particularly of pitch, motive, harmony and rhythm techniques, in a somewhat traditional analysis. The second investigates the ways in which musical techniques generate the …

Transformation Of The St. Clair Maritime Cultural Landscape From The Seventeenth To The Twentieth Centuries, Daniel Frederick Harrison Jan 2020

Transformation Of The St. Clair Maritime Cultural Landscape From The Seventeenth To The Twentieth Centuries, Daniel Frederick Harrison

Wayne State University Dissertations

The St. Clair system—a river, delta and lake between Lake Huron and the Detroit River—offers significant opportunities to study long-term maritime landscape formation, and to preserve a unique resource. Few maritime landscapes in the Great Lakes remain so deeply and clearly inscribed by successive cultures. This permits both focused and comprehensive analyses and comparisons of the ideologies, technologies and practices of indigenous, colonial, and modern societies as each created its unique place in the environment through four processes: cognition, dwelling, movement, and representation. The socially-conditioned perception of environmental resources and constraints, and resulting strategies to exploit the former while minimizing …

Lifting The Curtain On The Nation: The Theater And Nation-Building In El Ideal De Un Calavera, Cody Hanson Jan 2020

Lifting The Curtain On The Nation: The Theater And Nation-Building In El Ideal De Un Calavera, Cody Hanson

Decimonónica

Alberto Blest Gana, in his 1863 novel El ideal de un calavera, organizes and presents crafted images of chilenidad that are so pervasive they assume intrinsic value and take precedence over the plot narrative. Blest Gana (1830-1920) is well known for his realistic accounts of Chilean celebrations, customs, and pastimes. He consistently integrates detailed expository accounts into his writing that emphasize Chile’s unique culture. In El ideal de un calavera, for example, rather than organize themselves in an orderly line at the entrance of the theater, Chileans form an apretura, a practice in which patrons jockey for …

The Shifting Law Of Sexual Speech: Rethinking Robert Mapplethorpe, Amy M. Adler Jan 2020

The Shifting Law Of Sexual Speech: Rethinking Robert Mapplethorpe, Amy M. Adler

Faculty Articles

This Article explores the dramatic changes that have occurred over the last thirty years in the First Amendment doctrines governing sexual speech. As a prism through which to evaluate these changes, I consider the thirtieth anniversary of the landmark Robert Mapplethorpe trial, the first censorship prosecution against an art museum in the history of this country and the defining battle in the culture wars that roiled post-Reagan America. The target was the exhibition of formally beautiful, sexually hard-core photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe on view at a museum in Cincinnati. The controversy that erupted over those images—fueled by anxieties about AIDS, …
