A Walk Through Malegalalli Madumagalu – Lines That Uncover New Ontologies, Deepta Sateesh

The Western Ghats is a contentious landscape described in the familiar language of disciplines and boundaries, a language that has influenced the way in which development and environmental projects have been designed. It is possible the contentions arise from a particular ontology, created by a way of seeing the Ghats that divides nature from culture, relying on a view from above that distances one from place, an outsider’s view. This way of seeing differs from an understanding that emerges when engaging in the Ghats on foot. This paper grapples with this difference through a literary engagement with one of Kuvempu’s …

We Was Somebody, Kyle Rodgers, Abigail Kay, Md Jan 2020

We Was Somebody, Kyle Rodgers, Abigail Kay, Md

Phase 1

As the number of people who inject drugs (PWID) in Philadelphia increases, more healthcare professionals find themselves treating patients suffering from IV drug addictions. Unfortunately, many of these busy healthcare professionals have little education on the biochemistry of addiction and obstacles between people who inject drugs (PWID) and their recovery. We Was Somebody, a fictional play inspired by the stories of PWID in Kensington, Philadelphia, aims to promote understanding and empathy for the complexity of addiction and ultimately improve the quality of healthcare provided to the human beings affected by it.

The content of the play comes from peer-reviewed …

Assessing Competitive Oral Interpretation Speakers: What We Expect Students To Learn, Kelsey Johnson Jan 2020

Assessing Competitive Oral Interpretation Speakers: What We Expect Students To Learn, Kelsey Johnson

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Forensic coaches believe and argue oral interpretation events are educational in nature and provide robust learning opportunities for the competitors who participate in oral interpretation. However, while many scholars claim oral interpretation events are educational, learning outcomes (LOs) do not exist to measure what is learned. Therefore, to measure if oral interpretation competitors are learning, I led focus groups consisting of North Dakota speech coaches to determine what we can expect competitors to learn by participating in the oral interpretation events sanctioned by the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA). Using thematic analysis of the focus groups, I illuminated …

Memories Made In Fabric, Alexa Lidskin

Whittier Scholars Program

This project consists of two elements: 1) the actual handmade articles of clothing that were created, and 2) the portfolio being presented. With respect to the former, four articles of clothing were made-- a coat, a dress, a pair of pants, and a top-- by hand and by myself over the period of 6 months. Speaking of the latter, the portfolio consists of inspiration images, my initial concept sketches, my final sketches, as well as images of the clothing throughout the stages of their creation. In terms of its development, I had to learn how to sew, along with other …

Guns In The Private Square, Cody Jacobs Jan 2020

Guns In The Private Square, Cody Jacobs

Faculty Scholarship

The regulation of guns has been one of the most hotly debated public policy issues in the United States throughout the country’s history. But, up until recently, it has always been just that — a debate about public policy. Two recent developments have changed the landscape and moved the debate about publicly carrying firearms from the realm of public policy, to the realm of private decision-making and private law. First, laws related to publicly carrying firearms have been dramatically loosened throughout the United States to the point that, in the vast majority of states, anyone who is legally allowed to …

Hospital Footwear As A Vector For Organism Transmission, David J. Frederick

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In the United States healthcare system, nearly one in 31 patients contract a nosocomial infection. Footwear worn in these hospital settings are a factor that should be considered when determining contributing agents and methods for organism transmission. The purpose of this review is to synthesize the current research on hospital footwear as a vector for organism transmission. Eight studies were included in this review to examine the impact of wearable interventions on footwear-related contamination in the hospital setting and organism transfer as it relates to footwear and hospital environments. The link between the organism load and diversity on hospital worn …

The Art Of Contested Histories: "In Pursuit Of Venus [Infected]" And The Pacific Legacy, Deborah Gare, Riley Buchanan, Elizabeth Burns-Dans, Toni Church Jan 2020

The Art Of Contested Histories: "In Pursuit Of Venus [Infected]" And The Pacific Legacy, Deborah Gare, Riley Buchanan, Elizabeth Burns-Dans, Toni Church

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

European artists of the eighteenth century framed an exotic textual and visual narrative of the Pacific, drawing largely on knowledge gained from exploratory journeys of the 1760s and 1770s. Visual representations of the Pacific became socially fashionable and commercially successful. The French wallpaper manufacturer, Dufour, captured this commercial potential in a dramatic, panoramic wallpaper that told stories of European encounters with Pacific peoples: Les Sauvages de la Mer Pacifique (1804). Yet it was selective, defining the Pacific by moments of contact with Cook and other explorers. Lisa Reihana's In Pursuit of Venus [Infected] (2015–17) dramatically interrogates the eighteenth-century narrative of …

Queer Political Organization In Israel, And Palestine: Shifting Away From Homonationalism, Tristan Blaisdell Jan 2020

Queer Political Organization In Israel, And Palestine: Shifting Away From Homonationalism, Tristan Blaisdell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this project, I present research I have done on the issue of pink washing queer Israeli and Palestinian citizens and homonationalism within Israel and Palestine. I also create an exhibit brief outlining a hypothetical museum exhibit on this topic to be put up at the museum of culture and environment. The first section outlines the history and theory of my exhibit, and a brief personal statement where I talk about my interest in the subject and where I’m coming from before I design this exhibit. My theory is built off concepts of diaspora, home, belonging, queer identity, and intersectionality …

An Inside Look Into Event Planning, Anastasia Goebel Jan 2020

An Inside Look Into Event Planning, Anastasia Goebel

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper will summarize the planning process, methods, and results of a local Ellensburg, Washington event and student project, “Mickey’s Countdown to Christmas.” This event was a fundraiser taking place during the holiday season, where the goal was to raise money for the Ellensburg High School Band (EHS). The EHS Band takes a biannual educational trip to The Disneyland Resort, and as over 100 kids want to go in the year 2020, it has become an expensive endeavor. The hope for the fundraiser was to raise some extra money that could be deposited directly into student accounts, so that more …

Pathos And Spatial Possessions, Miranda Elizabeth Brown Jan 2020

Pathos And Spatial Possessions, Miranda Elizabeth Brown

Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection

In order to complete a rhetorical evaluation of one’s life experiences, a collection of prose was created based of special and personal encounters of the author. The author did so by comparing her own memories to those who were involved to see how the mind can distort the rhetoric of memory. The findings lie in the prose written in such a way for the audience to experience the works just as the author did through the power of rhetoric, specifically pathos.

Investigation In Engineering Leadership Using System Engineering And Virtual Reality, Charles Davis Jan 2020

Investigation In Engineering Leadership Using System Engineering And Virtual Reality, Charles Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

System Engineering can help derive requirements and specifications to build virtual environments which are good to test behaviors and attitudes. Virtual simulations can have a strong impact because role-playing facilitates active learning, permits the acceptance of new concepts, and generates increased interest, enthusiasm, and motivation. Research over the last 50 years has shown that reasoning with and about context is an essential aspect of human cognition, permeating language, memory, and reasoning capabilities. This integral process is developed over a lifetime through experiential learning. In this research, we utilize systems engineering to capture guidelines from psychologist and concepts of technological leadership. …

Honors Contracts: A Scaffolding To Independent Inquiry, Cindy S. Ticknor, Shamim Khan Jan 2020

Honors Contracts: A Scaffolding To Independent Inquiry, Cindy S. Ticknor, Shamim Khan

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Honors contracts can be valuable curricular assets if aligned with institutional goals and properly supported to overcome the challenges they sometimes present. At Columbus State University (CSU), honors contracts allow students to achieve one of our primary learning outcomes: honors graduates will demonstrate the ability to design independent inquiry projects that require critical and creative thinking. We believe graduate schools value this ability, and we know that employers in our community seek honors graduates who can work independently on extended projects, communicate effectively, and solve problems analytically and creatively. We achieve this important learning outcome by requiring a senior project …

JOHNSON CITY – She slips with agility from attendant to Greek beauty to Rhinemaiden, from human to wood bird and nightingale, from tragedy to comedy, from Mozart to Britten.

Names, characters, costumes, notes and venues change, but reviewers find soprano Diba Alvi “spectacular,” “alluring” and “impressive” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) and in command of “the stage with stellar vocalism and a sharply dramatic personality” (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review).

In 2007, Alvi gave a private recital in Johnson City, then in 2008, she performed with the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra in a program titled “An Evening with Diba Alvi.” She will return to Northeast Tennessee, …

Addressing The Elephant On The Stage: Mental Health In Theatre Education, Alexandra M. Meridionale Jan 2020

Addressing The Elephant On The Stage: Mental Health In Theatre Education, Alexandra M. Meridionale

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis examined the ways in which present-day 6th through 12th grade theatre educators approach the topic of mental health, both implicitly and explicitly, in theatre education. Through a survey of existing literature, as well as interviews with 6th through 12th grade theatre educators, the researcher examined ways in which theatre educators were aware of the mental health needs of their students in any of the following capacities: explicit discussions regarding mental health, theatre curriculum, show selection, script analysis, and casting choices.

The reveal the educator perception that mental health issues are increasingly relevant to 6 …
