Effects Of Feeding 60% Dried Corn Distillers Grains Plus Solubles On Yearling Bull Reproduction, Cierrah Jordan Kassetas
Effects Of Feeding 60% Dried Corn Distillers Grains Plus Solubles On Yearling Bull Reproduction, Cierrah Jordan Kassetas
Animal Sciences
Thirty-six half-sibling Angus bulls were assigned one of three diets: 1) 60% corn-based (CON; S = 0.18%; n = 12); 2) 60% DDGS replacing corn (60DDGS; S = 0.55% DM; n = 12); 3) CON diet + equivalent sulfur of 60DDGS added as calcium sulfate (SULF; S = 0.54%; n = 12) to evaluate the effects of feeding diets containing DDGS or calcium sulfate on performance and semen characteristics. Bulls began the study at 9 months of age and gained 1.6 kg/day for 112 days. Treatment by day interactions (P < 0.05) were observed for glutathione peroxidase and trace mineral concentrations in seminal plasma. Effects of treatment (P < 0.05) were observed for semen kinematics and triiodothyronine in serum. Alterations observed when feeding 60% DDGS to developing bulls occurred in a manner that is not dependent on dietary sulfur; therefore, observed changes could be related to other components within DDGS.
Unsteady Aerodynamic Analysis Of Wind Harvesting Aircraft, Judd Mehr, Eduardo Alvarez, Andrew Ning
Unsteady Aerodynamic Analysis Of Wind Harvesting Aircraft, Judd Mehr, Eduardo Alvarez, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) technology aspires to provide increased options for wind energy harvesting. This includes increased feasibility for temporary and remote installations, as well as the ability to operate at wind speeds both lower and higher than traditional turbines. Additionally, the hope is to be able to produce these extensions of wind energy technology at a lower cost than conventional technologies. As AWE technology is still in its infancy, however, there is very little published information concerning the aerodynamic details of the technology. We have created a set of aerodynamic analysis tools which we apply to wind harvesting aircraft, …

Understanding Escherichia Coli And Water Quality In Stormwater Retention Ponds And Detention Basins In Fargo As Part Of The Red River Watershed, Erika Leigh Olson
Natural Resources Management
Little is known about the spatial and temporal changes in water quality and E. coli throughout stormwater systems. The objectives of this study are to: 1) assess surface water within detention basins and retention ponds and adjacent groundwater to determine E. coli movement within the system; 2) determine how precipitation events impact water quality and E. coli; and 3) genetically source track E. coli and pathogens to better understand the impact on humans. Methods of this study include sampling surface water during major storm events, followed by sampling of groundwater and surface water one week later. Additional samples were taken …
Invasions In The Prairie Pothole Region: Addressing The Effects Of Exotic Plants On Wetland And Grassland Ecosystems And Restoration Efforts, Cheyenne Elizabeth Durant
Invasions In The Prairie Pothole Region: Addressing The Effects Of Exotic Plants On Wetland And Grassland Ecosystems And Restoration Efforts, Cheyenne Elizabeth Durant
Natural Resources Management
Three wetland restoration methods: seeding, seeding + hay mulch, and seeding + hay mulch + vegetation plugs were compared via the plant community within a formerly cropped wetland in southeastern North Dakota. Arrangement of plugs were also compared to assess the success of native species establishment. Mean relative cover for native species and introduced species were recorded and analyzed to compare the restoration methods and plug arrangement. Three herbicide treatments were studied on upland prairie sites with and without prescribed burning to test effects on leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) control and seeded native establishment. There is no difference native species …
The Role Of Eutrophication And Sediment Phosphorus Saturation In The Formation Of Harmful Cyanobacterial Blooms, Taylor Young
The Role Of Eutrophication And Sediment Phosphorus Saturation In The Formation Of Harmful Cyanobacterial Blooms, Taylor Young
Natural Resources Management
Harmful cyanobacterial blooms have been a growing concern as global climate change and eutrophication of lakes, rivers, and oceans continually push conditions to favor cyanobacteria over other phytoplankton. Two studies were conducted assessing the impacts of hyper-eutrophication on phytoplankton communities, and phosphorous saturation in the sediments. Excess nutrients available to phytoplankton resulted in dominant cyanobacteria, and predictability of growth, by nutrient limitation, becoming drastically diminished. Sediments were observed to be fully phosphorus saturated, preventing the sequestration of excess phosphorus, and providing a consistent source of phosphorus throughout each season. Extreme saturation of nutrients reduces the predictability of systems and perpetuates …
Childhood Obesity: Developing Early Nutrition & Feeding Education For Parents At Well Child Visits, Ashley Lynn Benson
Childhood Obesity: Developing Early Nutrition & Feeding Education For Parents At Well Child Visits, Ashley Lynn Benson
Nursing
Childhood obesity is an extensive problem in the United States and North Dakota (CDC, 2014). Significant health consequences are linked to obesity, including type two diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, cancers, and psychological disorders (Pandita et al., 2016; Xu & Mishra, 2018). Obesity comorbidities, previously presented in later adulthood, now emerge in younger populations (Pandita et al., 2016). Unfortunately, treatment of obesity is not effective, and therefore, prevention must be the primary focus (Daniels et al., 2015; Pandita et al., 2016). Diet and eating behaviors have a significant impact on weight, and children develop taste preferences and lifelong eating behaviors …

Special Issue On The Third Workshop On Biological Mentality, Kenneth A. Augustyn
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The Third Workshop on Biological Mentality was held from September 23, 2019 to March 2, 2020 as a series of twenty-one Monday online conferencing sessions, each consisting of a talk followed by a Q&A discussion. Like the two previous workshops [1, 2], the objective of this workshop was to seek a deeper level of understanding the physical foundations of biological mentality (whether conscious or nonconscious).
Consciousness As A Factor In Evolution, Kenneth A. Augustyn
Consciousness As A Factor In Evolution, Kenneth A. Augustyn
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
What I call the mind began as a non-conscious robotic biochemical process control system in the very earliest forms of life. As life evolved, problems in control became more difficult and exceeded the computational capabilities of the organisms. Nature discovered a means of transcending computable physical processes resulting in non-computational subjective mental capabilities that, while still not conscious, had a degree of genuine autonomy from the physical world. These autonomous subjective wants and goals now affected the course of (but not the mechanism of) evolution. The integrated amalgam of robotic and transrobotic unconscious capabilities eventually gave rise to consciousness, which …
‘Coronated’ Consumption In The Viral Market, Soonkwan Hong
‘Coronated’ Consumption In The Viral Market, Soonkwan Hong
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The universal exposure to the virus has disrupted institutions, redefined values, and reshaped systems, including the market. Idling, uncertainty, and liquidity encapsulate the ever-precarious individual lives and the reflexive socio-politico-cultural changes. These conditions and consequences nonetheless create paradoxical opportunities in the viral market. The new meaning of connectivity that promotes high-viscosity relationships and high-visibility identities will transform the market to better acknowledge and support humans and the new sociality.
Mathematical Modeling Of Epidemics: Parametric Heterogeneity And Pathogen Coexistence, Eric Sarfo Amponsah
Mathematical Modeling Of Epidemics: Parametric Heterogeneity And Pathogen Coexistence, Eric Sarfo Amponsah
Mathematics
No two species can indefinitely occupy the same ecological niche according to the competitive exclusion principle. When competing strains of the same pathogen invade a homogeneous population, the strain with the largest basic reproductive ratio R0 will force the other strains to extinction. However, over 51 pathogens are documented to have multiple strains [3] coexisting, contrary to the results from homogeneous models. In reality, the world is heterogeneous with the population varying in susceptibility. As such, the study of epidemiology, and hence the problem of pathogen coexistence should entail heterogeneity. Heterogeneous models tend to capture dynamics such as resistance to …
How To Achieve Efficiency And Accuracy In Discrete Element Simulation Of Asphalt Mixture: A Drf-Based Equivalent Model For Asphalt Sand Mortar, Yu Liu, Peifeng Su, Miaomiao Li, Hui Yao, Junfu Liu, Mei Xu, Xiaodong Zhou, Zhanping You
How To Achieve Efficiency And Accuracy In Discrete Element Simulation Of Asphalt Mixture: A Drf-Based Equivalent Model For Asphalt Sand Mortar, Yu Liu, Peifeng Su, Miaomiao Li, Hui Yao, Junfu Liu, Mei Xu, Xiaodong Zhou, Zhanping You
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The clump-based discrete element model is one of the asphalt mixture simulation methods, which has the potential to not only predict mixture performance but also simulate particle movement during compaction, transporting, and other situations. However, modelling of asphalt sand mortar in this method remains to be a problem due to computing capacity. Larger-sized balls (generally 2.0-2.36 mm) were usually used to model the smaller particles and asphalt binder, but this replacement may result in the mixture's unrealistic volumetric features. More specifically, replacing original elements with equal volume but larger size particles will increase in buck volume and then different particle …

Genotype And Environmental Effects On Quality Traits Of Durum Wheat Grown In North Dakota, Sara Moayedi
Plant Sciences
Variation in grain, semolina, dough strength, and pasta quality traits were evaluated using the effect of genotype and weather factors (air temperature, rainfall, and relative humidity). In addition, size exclusion high performance liquid chromatography (SE-HPLC) was applied to determine the correlation between quality traits and protein molecular weight distribution (MWD) with cooked firmness and cooked weight of fresh pasta made from four durum wheat genotypes. Results indicated that the environment was a great source of variation in the majority of quality traits such as test weight, 1000-kernel weight, grain protein content, vitreous kernel content, falling number, semolina protein content, semolina …
Influence Of Droplet Velocity, Spacing, And Inter-Arrival Time On Line Formation And Saturation In Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing, Trenton Colton, Nathan B. Crane
Influence Of Droplet Velocity, Spacing, And Inter-Arrival Time On Line Formation And Saturation In Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing, Trenton Colton, Nathan B. Crane
Faculty Publications
Binder Jetting (BJ) is a low-cost Additive Manufacturing (AM) process that uses inkjet technology to selectively bind particles in a powder bed. BJ relies on the ability to control, not only the placement of binder on the surface but also its imbibition into the powder bed. This is a complex process in which picoliter-sized droplets impact powder beds at velocities of 1-10 m/s. However, the effects of printing parameters such as droplet velocity, size, spacing, and inter-arrival time on saturation level (fraction of pore space filled with binder) and line formation (merging of droplets to form a line) are unknown. …

The goal of this paper was to apply aspects of the heuristic model advanced by Eisenberg, Cumberland, and Spinrad (1998)to the study of socialization that takes place in preschool and elementary school classrooms. Investigating socialization in this context is important given the number of hours students spend in school, the emotional nature of social interactions that take place involving teachers and students, and the emotions students often experience in the context of academic work. Guided by Eisenberg and colleagues’(1998) call to consider complex socialization pathways, we focus our discussion on ways teachers, peers, and the classroom context can shape students’ …
Butterfly Community And Behavioral Responses To Restored Disturbance Regimes, Brooke Karasch
Butterfly Community And Behavioral Responses To Restored Disturbance Regimes, Brooke Karasch
Range Science
Grassland organisms evolved alongside the interaction of fire and grazing, but modern management often decouples these disturbances. In order to analyze the effects of reintroducing this interaction, we implemented four treatments. Two of these treatments were variations of patch-burn grazing, one was modified rest-rotation grazing, and one was season-long grazing. We chose to monitor the butterfly response to these treatments because butterflies have short generations, require a wide variety of resources, and are easily identifiable as adults. We quantified both the butterfly community and the behavioral time budgets of two species. We found that the butterfly community is more species-rich …

Contemporary attacks of various types have prompted calls for stronger public support and legal protections for journalism. Around the world, journalism faces not only government regulation that affects editorial content but also economic and corporate pressures as well as lack of public understanding of its societal functions. In the United States, courts and even journalism organizations have been reluctant to define journalism or single it out for special protection. But international human rights law presents a possible solution. This article discusses the international human rights law provisions that protect individuals engaged in journalism. The United Nations Human Rights Committee has …

Parental Financial Education During Childhood And Financial Behaviors Of Emerging Adults, Ashley B. Lebaron, Erin K. Holmes, Bryce L. Jorgensen, Roy A. Bean
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article was to determine whether overt financial education from parents during childhood (retrospective measure collected in the same survey wave) is associated with a greater frequency of healthy financial management behaviors in emerging adulthood, and whether this relationship is dependent on gender. Using a sample of emerging adults from the Flourishing Families dataset (N = 437), we ran two multivariate linear regressions—one with and one without the interaction variable. Results suggest that financial education from parents during childhood is linked with a greater frequency of healthy financial behaviors in emerging adulthood but was not dependent on …

Text-Map Analysis: An Introduction To The Method And An Examination Of Relationship Self-Regulation And Religion, Joe M. Chelladurai, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks
Faculty Publications
The twofold purpose of this article is to (a) introduce text-map analysis and demonstrate its utility and (b) to examine systemic processes between relationship self-regulation and religion. In the first part, we propose a novel approach to qualitative data analysis termed mapping and analysis of processes and sequences. We then present procedural steps and diagrammatic conventions to chart sequences and connections between concepts and events sing flowchart diagrams we call text-maps. In the second part, using text-map analysis with a case study, we examine relationship self-regulation and religion in a Latter-day Saint couple. We draw upon three episodes …

A Density Functional Theory And Many Body Perturbation Theory Based Study Of Photo-Excited Charge Separation In Doped Silicon Nanowires With Gold Leads: Toy Models For The Photovoltaic Effect, Nathan Thomas Walker
Physics
We analyze a toy model for p-n junction photovoltaic devices by simulating photoexcited state dynamics in silicon nanowires. One nanowire is approximately circular in cross section with a diameter of d = 1.17 nm. The other has an approximately rhombic cross-section with d1 = 1.16 nm and d2 = 1.71 nm. Both nanowires have been doped with aluminum and phosphorus atoms and capped with gold leads. We use Boltzmann transport equation (BE) that includes phonon emission, carrier multiplication (CM), and exciton transfer. BE rates are computed using non-equilibrium finite-temperature many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations, …

While the intent in many cases were to create a more flexible, effective and efficient organizations that meets the challenges of survival under external and internal pressures. However, the existing body of knowledge on lean is disperse and diverse in nature with respect to the application and implementation of lean tools and practices, making it difficult for researchers and practitioners to …
Optimization Of Regional Empty Container Supply Chains To Support Future Investment Decisions For Developing Inland Container Terminals, Satpal Singh Wadhwa
Optimization Of Regional Empty Container Supply Chains To Support Future Investment Decisions For Developing Inland Container Terminals, Satpal Singh Wadhwa
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
Containerized grain shipping has been increasingly used as a shipment option by U.S. exporters. Continued evolution and investment decisions in optimizing multimodal operations is a key in continued growth for the container transportation alternative. Agriculture is a leading sector in the Midwest economy. Grain production is particularly important to the natural resource-based economy of the upper Midwest. These increasing volumes of grain are being shipped in containers because containers offer opportunities to lower logistics costs and to broaden marketing options. Exporters are put at a competitive disadvantage when they are unable to obtain containers at a reasonable cost. Consequently exporters …

American Sign Language is not transparent, one cannot understand it until ones learn is. It takes many years of study and interaction with people who use it to be able to properly learn a language. As a student who studies architecture, I have found the same to be true about the communication of our built environment. This thesis project titled, “Architectural Sign Language” explores the ideas of communication through the built environment. The goal will be to integrate the notion of sign language and architecture into a building that non-verbally communicates to tell a story and can be appreciated by …

The goal of this thesis is …
Further Characterization Of Pathogen Virulence And Genetic Mapping Of New Virulence Genes In Pyrenophora Tritici-Repentis, The Causal Agent Of Tan Spot Of Wheat, Jingwei Guo
Plant Sciences
The ascomycete Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Ptr) causes tan spot of wheat, a devastating foliar disease on both common wheat (Triticum aestivum L., 2n=6x=42, AABBDD) and durum (T. turgidum ssp. durum L., 2n=4x=28, AABB). Ptr is known to produce three necrotrophic effectors (NEs), namely Ptr ToxA, Ptr ToxB and Ptr ToxC, to cause disease by interacting with corresponding host sensitivity genes. However, many studies in the last twenty years have suggested that Ptr produces additional virulence factors. My Ph.D. research focused on further identification and genetic mapping of new virulence genes in Ptr. In Chapter 2, a bi-parental fungal population was developed …

Improvement Of Organoleptic Attributes Of Yellow Pea Flour Through An Emerging Green Technology: Supercritical Carbon Dioxide + Ethanol Extraction, Serap Vatansever
Plant Sciences
An increasing demand for following healthier eating pattern has created a rapidly growing food market, including more nutrient dense and healthier plant-based foods. Nutrient-dense yellow pea flour is ideal for addressing these new-generation foods. However, its utilization in foods is limited due to its unpleasant flavor. Therefore, an eco-friendly deflavoring method has recently been found effective to improve sensory quality of pulse ingredients. Supercritical carbon dioxide + ethanol (SC-CO2+EtOH) extraction was applied as deflavoring method. The goals of this research were to evaluate (1) the applicability of this extraction at optimized conditions to reduce off-flavor compounds of pea flour, and …

To date, the two most important—Certainly the most influential—visual illustrators of the Book of Mormon have been Arnold Friberg and Minerva Teichert. The distance between the ways they render the text into art is real and telling. As Paul Gutjahr notes, "Friberg's most dominant figures are unfailingly men, and almost all of them could have stepped out of the pages of a superhero comic book. By contrast, Teichert "stands out among Mormon artists because of her firm commitment to bringing forward the female elements of the book, carefully evoking the story's feminine side." Although Teichert and Friberg created their paintings …

Individuals verbally express meaning not only through speech sounds and words but also prosodically through the pitch, loudness, and tempo of their voice. Through a quantitative analysis, this exploratory study examined the prosodic elements of mean pitch, pitch variability, and pitch range in a sample of 450 voice-overs and throws from 90 male and female broadcast reporters and anchors from larger markets across the United States. Findings indicate that compared to typical speakers in the general population, male broadcasters actually speak with an elevated mean pitch, more pitch variability, and use more range. However, female broadcasters were found to speak …
