Particle Formation And Surface Processes On Atmospheric Aerosols: A Review Of Applied Quantum Chemical Calculations, George C. Shields, Ariel Gale, Tyler Ball, Tuguldur T. Odbadrakh, Angelini Leonardi, Heather M. Ricker, Juan G. Navea

Chemistry Publications

Aerosols significantly influence atmospheric processes such as cloud nucleation, het- erogeneous chemistry, and heavy-metal transport in the troposphere. The chemical and physical complexity of atmospheric aerosols results in large uncertainties in their climate and health effects. In this article, we review recent advances in scientific understanding of aerosol processes achieved by the application of quantum chemical calculations. In particular, we emphasize recent work in two areas: new particle for- mation and heterogeneous processes. Details in quantum chemical methods are pro- vided, elaborating on computational models for prenucleation, secondary organic aerosol formation, and aerosol interface phenomena. Modeling of relative humidity effects, …

Electrospun Polyacrylonitrile/Graphene Oxide Nanofibers As Sorbent For Solid Phase Extraction Of Epichlorohydrin In Water, Chotitas Sribun Jan 2020

Electrospun Polyacrylonitrile/Graphene Oxide Nanofibers As Sorbent For Solid Phase Extraction Of Epichlorohydrin In Water, Chotitas Sribun

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In this study, electrospun nanofibers of polyacrylonitrile functionalized with graphene oxide (PAN/GO) were fabricated and applied as a sorbent in solid phase extraction in a disk format (SPE disk). Graphene oxide were synthesized by chemical oxidation of graphite powder via Hummers and Tour methods and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For electrospun PAN/GO nanofibers, the average diameters of fibers ranged from 117-147 nm and the surface area of PAN and PAN/GO nanofibers were ranged from 7.77-13.40 m2/g. Then, the PAN/GO nanofibers were assembled in a SPE disk format and …

Imaging In Karst Terrain Using The Electrical Resistivity Tomography (Ert) And Multi-Channel Analysis Of Surface Waves (Masw) Methods, Hassan Abdullah Alzahrani Jan 2020

Imaging In Karst Terrain Using The Electrical Resistivity Tomography (Ert) And Multi-Channel Analysis Of Surface Waves (Masw) Methods, Hassan Abdullah Alzahrani

Doctoral Dissertations

"Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Multi-channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) methods were used to image the subsurface in karst terrain in the southeast of Missouri. A SuperSting R8 system was used to acquire the ERT profiles; a multi-channel engineering seismograph was used to acquire the MASW data. The latter data were used to constrain and verify the ERT interpreted depth to top-of-rock and soil thickness. The ERT data were used to delineate the soil/rock interface and to identify zones of anomalously high moisture content within the bedrock.

The primary objective of the research was to determine the cause of …

An Integrated Wellbore Stability Study To Mitigate Expensive Wellbore Instability Problems While Drilling Into Zubair Shale/Sand Sequence, Southern Iraq, Ahmed Khudhair Abbas Jan 2020

An Integrated Wellbore Stability Study To Mitigate Expensive Wellbore Instability Problems While Drilling Into Zubair Shale/Sand Sequence, Southern Iraq, Ahmed Khudhair Abbas

Doctoral Dissertations

”The Zubair Formation is the most prolific reservoir in Iraq, which is comprised of sandstones interbedded with shale sequences. Due to the weak nature of the shale sequence, the instability of a wellbore is one of the most critical challenges that continuously appears during drilling across this formation. Historically, over 90% of wellbore problems in the Zubair Formation were due to wellbore instability. Problems associated with wellbore instability, such as tight hole, shale caving, stuck logging tools along with subsequent fishing, stuck pipe, and sidetracking result in increasing the non-productive time. This non-productive time has cost an enormous amount of …

Multi-Physics-Based Approach To Active Microwave Thermography, Seyed Ali Mirala Jan 2020

Multi-Physics-Based Approach To Active Microwave Thermography, Seyed Ali Mirala

Doctoral Dissertations

“The goal of this work is to advance a novel nondestructive testing (NDT) method for controlled, rapid, and effective inspection of a structure through the integration of microwave NDT and thermography, referred to as Active Microwave Thermography (AMT). In AMT, the structure under test is exposed to microwave radiation and the thermal profile of the structure is monitored via a thermal camera in order to obtain desired information regarding the structure. This new technique is applicable across a wide range of NDT needs including detection of voids, delamination, water ingress, debonding, and cracks in numerous structures such as carbon fiber …

Balancing Labor Requirements In A Manufacturing Environment, Patrick Bernard Dwyer Jan 2020

Balancing Labor Requirements In A Manufacturing Environment, Patrick Bernard Dwyer

Doctoral Dissertations

“This research examines construction environments within manufacturing facilities, specifically semiconductor manufacturing facilities, and develops a new optimization method that is scalable for large construction projects with multiple execution modes and resource constraints. The model is developed to represent real-world conditions in which project activities do not have a fixed, prespecified duration but rather a total amount of work that is directly impacted by the level of resources assigned. To expand on the concept of resource driven project durations, this research aims to mimic manufacturing construction environments by allowing a non-continuous resource allocation to project tasks. This concept allows for resources …

Improvising Intellectual Property In Saigon, David A. Bergan Jan 2020

Improvising Intellectual Property In Saigon, David A. Bergan

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

How does intellectual property become part of the structure of social practice? The traditional answers are enforcement, education, and incentivized self-interest. This Article challenges that understanding by examining the social field of young engineers in Vietnam. In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, intellectual production is not only about producing the legal commodity we call intellectual property. For many young engineers working with multinational companies, it is not about producing a product at all. It is about improving their position in society. Relying on over a year of qualitative, ethnographic fieldwork from 2012 to 2014, this Article develops a critique of …

Jon Snow Lives! Glenn Dies! When Revealing Plot Twists Constitutes Copyright Infringement, Joel Timmer Jan 2020

Jon Snow Lives! Glenn Dies! When Revealing Plot Twists Constitutes Copyright Infringement, Joel Timmer

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

TV shows frequently rely on plot twists and cliff-hangers to keep viewers engaged and tuned-in for the next episode. To try to keep these plot twists secret, networks and program producers take steps to prevent people from revealing them before the episodes air. Recently, HBO and AMC, the networks that air Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, respectively, have alleged that these so-called spoilers constitute copyright infringement. However, it does not appear that courts have considered whether posting such spoilers does, in fact, constitute infringement. This Article thus examines that question, which requires considering whether such spoilers constitute fair …

The Female Act: Bringing Title Ix Into The Twenty-First Century, Courtney Tibbetts Jan 2020

The Female Act: Bringing Title Ix Into The Twenty-First Century, Courtney Tibbetts

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

What was once lauded as a progressive champion for women has been decaying in practice. Enacted more than forty-five years ago, Title IX's unforeseen consequences and shortcomings are primarily borne by female collegiate athletes. To comply with Title IX, the majority of college athletic programs follow the proportionality standard, which mandates that male and female participation in athletics must be substantially proportional to universities' overall undergraduate enrollment. Female participation in college athletics has increased to nearly five times the pre-1972 participation rates since the introduction of Title IX. While that progress is admirable, the athletes of today-both male and female-deserve …

Franchise Participants As Proper Patent Opponents: Walker Process Claims, Robert W. Emerson Jan 2020

Franchise Participants As Proper Patent Opponents: Walker Process Claims, Robert W. Emerson

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Franchise parties may be sued for patent infringement, or they may seek to sue others for an antitrust injury as the result of a fraudulently obtained patent. Indeed, franchisors and franchisees may simultaneously fall under both categories-sued for infringement but aggrieved because the very basis of that suit is illegitimate in their eyes. These franchise parties may turn for relief to a patent-validity challenge authorized in the seminal case Walker Process Equipment, Inc. v. Food Machine & Chemical Corp. Franchise participants-franchisees and franchisors alike-may be the ideal Walker Process claimants. When these types of cases occur, the damages within the …

'Rifled Precision': Using E-Discovery Technology To Streamline Books And Records Litigation, Joshua A. Manning Jan 2020

'Rifled Precision': Using E-Discovery Technology To Streamline Books And Records Litigation, Joshua A. Manning

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

In 1993, the Delaware Supreme Court urged stockholders to use the "tools at hand" to flesh out complaints in derivative lawsuits. The plaintiffs' bar got the message. In the years since that proclamation, the Delaware Court of Chancery has seen dramatic increases in so-called Section 220 litigation-stockholders exercising their statutory right to inspect a company 's books and records. As Delaware courts have made it harder for stockholders to challenge merger transactions, this trend has only intensified. Due to increased filings, as well as other structural hurdles, these "summary proceedings" have begun to drag, with many requiring full trials. Because …

Where's The Consumer Harm? The Bots Act: A Fruitless Boogeyman Hunt, Zachary Sturman Jan 2020

Where's The Consumer Harm? The Bots Act: A Fruitless Boogeyman Hunt, Zachary Sturman

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Historically, the secondary-ticket market for sporting events, concerts, and the like entailed hollering scalpers perched outside of venues. Though this practice has not been entirely extinguished, the internet has largely moved the secondary-ticket market online to websites like StubHub, the largest player in this arena. Instead of yelling loudest or finding the best real estate outside a stadium from which to perch, the modern ticket scalper competes most effectively in the secondary-ticket market by finding ways to access primary tickets online. By using ticket "bots," programs designed to autofill customer information and solve CAPTCHA prompts, modern scalpers can quickly purchase …

Gmo Corn, Mexico, And Coloniality, Ernesto Hernandez-Lopez Jan 2020

Gmo Corn, Mexico, And Coloniality, Ernesto Hernandez-Lopez

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Genetically modified ("GMO") corn germinates legal controversies in Mexico. Since 2013, Mexican courts have temporarily suspended GMO corn because it threatens biodiversity. In the Colectividad del Maiz lawsuit, courts have prohibited Mexico from issuing commercial GMO permits while the litigation continues. Companies like Monsanto need these permits to sell GMO seeds. Corn is the most essential food item for millions of Mexicans and is central to Mexican culture. Mexicans wait for Colectividad del Maiz's resolution, siding with biodiversity or GMOs. This Article describes scientific GMO controversies and analyzes biosecurity, class-action, and international environmental law. It argues that this corn fight …

People V. Robots: A Roadmap For Enforcing California's New Online Bot Disclosure Act, Barry Stricke Jan 2020

People V. Robots: A Roadmap For Enforcing California's New Online Bot Disclosure Act, Barry Stricke

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Bots are software applications that complete tasks automatically. A bot's communication is disembodied, so humans can mistake it for a real person, and their misbelief can be exploited by the bot owner to deploy malware or phish personal data. Bots also pose as consumers posting online product reviews or spread (often fake) news, and a bot owner can coordinate multiple social-network accounts to trick a network's "trending" algorithms, boosting the visibility of specific content, sowing and exacerbating controversy, or fabricating an impression of mass individual consensus. California's 2019 Bolstering Online Transparency Act (the "CA Bot Act') imposes conspicuous disclosure requirements …

Thermodynamic Investigations Of Pure And Blended Cement Mixtures, Jonathan Lapeyre Jan 2020

Thermodynamic Investigations Of Pure And Blended Cement Mixtures, Jonathan Lapeyre

Doctoral Dissertations

” This research is made up of several studies. The first study focused on understanding the reaction kinetics of Ca3SiO5 and metakaolin (MK) mixtures compared to Ca3SiO5 and silica fume (SF) mixtures. It was shown that MK was a more effective additive than SF at small replacement levels (i.e. ≥ 10% by mass) while higher replacement levels of MK became a detriment due to excess (Al(OH)4¯) ions preventing the nucleation and growth of C-S-H. In a follow-up study where the MK particle size distribution (PSD) was modified, similar effects were observed but …

Elephants And Pandemics, Adrian Treves Jan 2020

Elephants And Pandemics, Adrian Treves

Animal Sentience

Baker & Winkler’s critique of Asian elephant tourism and conservation in Thailand has convinced me that this was “an industry with too many victims.” Yet I fear that B&W’s proposed remedy of returning to past elephant husbandry by Karen hill-peoples has little likelihood of improving the lives of the elephants for long. Who can predict whether the Karen will live up to this hope? B&W advocate for the Karen, but not for “an abolitionist stance on elephant-human relationships.” In my view, whether we discuss elephants or the wild mammals that carry SARS-CoV-2, abolition of many human uses of animals is …

Fitnessgram Assessment Results In Five Rural Counties Of Georgia, Tara L. Underwood, Jimmie H. Smith Jr, Dawood H. Sultan

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Childhood obesity continues to be more prevalent in the United States (US) than ever before. Youth who reside in rural areas tend to experience higher risks of obesity and overweight status, mainly due to barriers to physical activity. Even though the US federal government has mandated a daily requirement of physical activity for all school-age children, the majority of youth from rural communities tend to not achieve the recommended Health Fitness Zone (HFZ) goals.

Methods: The FITNESSGRAM is the instrument that has been used to measure and report students’ physical activity and body mass index (BMI) based …

Making The Case For Community Health Workers In Georgia, Gail G. Mccray, Berneta L. Haynes, Adrianne S. Proeller, Christopher E. Ervin, Arletha D. Williams-Livingston

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Community Health Workers (CHW) can be an important and evidence-based response to reduce unnecessary morbidity and mortality in chronic diseases like asthma, heart disease, diabetes, cancers, HIV, and maternal/child health, and mental health. Georgia’s urban and rural diverse populations are at high risk from many of these conditions. Largely the outcomes in controlling these health issues are nonmedical and include social determinants of health, i.e., access to care, transportation, inadequate housing, and health literacy. CHWs can increase the capacity of individuals, families, and communities to improve their health. Historically, concerns of CHWs on healthcare teams to address these issues …

Effects Of Pilot Hole Size On Miniscrew Insertion Torque And Synthetic Bone Transparency, Chutimont Teekavanich Jan 2020

Effects Of Pilot Hole Size On Miniscrew Insertion Torque And Synthetic Bone Transparency, Chutimont Teekavanich

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Orthodontic miniscrews have gained popularity; however, they have some drawbacks, including screw loosening due to bone resorption caused by excess microdamage during screw insertion. Pilot hole preparation through the cortical bone is considered beneficial to avoid such microdamage, while an overly large pilot hole impairs primary stability. Hence, we used a human bone analogue to evaluate the microdamage and primary stability to estimate the optimal pilot hole size that would minimize the screw loosening risk. Ti6Al4V miniscrews and 1.0-mm-thick synthetic cortical bone pieces were prepared. Various compressive loads were applied in indentation tests to bone surfaces, and the microdamaged areas …
