Hemmed In? Considering The Complexities Of Amish Womanhood, Natalie Jolly Dec 2020

Hemmed In? Considering The Complexities Of Amish Womanhood, Natalie Jolly

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

How have conceptions of Amish womanhood changed over time? In this article, I show that while early scholars offered only a rudimentary look at Amish women’s lives, current research is expanding and expounding upon this question. To begin, I survey early Amish studies literature, demonstrating that women’s lives rarely featured in these analyses. More recent scholarship demonstrates that when women’s lives take center stage, a fuller appreciation of the shape of women’s lives emerges. Specifically, I demonstrate that a simplified rendering not only masks the role women play but also obfuscates important aspects of Amish gender norms. I then turn …

Claiming A Piece Of Tradition: Community Discourse In Russian Mennonite Community Cookbooks, Amy Harris-Aber Dec 2020

Claiming A Piece Of Tradition: Community Discourse In Russian Mennonite Community Cookbooks, Amy Harris-Aber

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Russian Mennonite immigrants who settled south central Kansas in the late 19th century and their descendants naturally developed a discourse community that differentiates them from the dominant culture in which they reside. Changing regional dynamics regarding diversity along with continued acculturation impacts this ethnoreligious community in a kind of dual displacement; the descendants of these Russian Mennonites not only live in the shadow of their ancestors’ collected memories and traumas related to migration but have and are currently witnessing further shifts away from the once agricultural lifestyle they previously observed. Therefore, heritage preservation is increasingly vital for stakeholders engaged with …

An Indian Burial Site At Crystal River, Florida, F. G. Rainey Dec 2020

An Indian Burial Site At Crystal River, Florida, F. G. Rainey

Florida Historical Quarterly

Crystal river rises in a group of large springs a few miles south of the Withlacoochee river on the west coast of Florida and flows westward for eight miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Fish are abundant in the river and the small town of Crystal River situated at the source owes its existence to an extensive fishing industry carried on in the region. Large oyster beds lie just off the mouth of the river and supply oysters to many cities in Florida.

The originals are in the possession of Dr. George Petrie, Professor of History and Dean of the Graduate School, Alabama Polytechnic Institute; and it was on his suggestion that the paper was written, some years ago, soon after the letters were brought to light.

The Manufacture Of Cotton In Florida Before And During The Civil War, Dorothy Dodd Dec 2020

The Manufacture Of Cotton In Florida Before And During The Civil War, Dorothy Dodd

Florida Historical Quarterly

The fluctuating price of cotton in the 1840’s caused the cotton planters of Florida, like their brethren in other parts of the South, to consider ways in which they might stabilize the price of their staple crop in order to stave off economic ruin. 1 Numerous proposals were made to this end, 2 but none met with more widespread response throughout the South than that. of bringing the cotton mill to the cotton field by establishing cotton manufactories throughout the cotton producing regions.

Wilkinson Call, Soldier And Senator, Part I, Albert Hubbard Roberts Dec 2020

Wilkinson Call, Soldier And Senator, Part I, Albert Hubbard Roberts

Florida Historical Quarterly

If Wilkinson Call was fortunate politically in being of a family already prominent in Florida affairs, he may have suffered historically as the nephew of a great uncle and the uncle of a great nephew; his own colorful career, including eighteen years as a United States senator, being obscured by the earlier glory of Richard Keith Call, as soldier and territorial governor of Florida, and to the present generation by the recent service of Rhydon M. Call, State and Federal jurist. Relatively few Floridians of today remember more than the name of Wilkinson Call and of these, fewer know that …

The Secession Movement In Florida, 1850-1861, Part Ii, Dorothy Dodd Dec 2020

The Secession Movement In Florida, 1850-1861, Part Ii, Dorothy Dodd

Florida Historical Quarterly

Florida had hardly taken her place in the Union when the controversy of 1850 forced her to consider the advisability and probable necessity of breaking the ties so recently formed. The popular verdict in that year was for the Union. But in the succeeding decade there were constant assertions of the right of, and probable necessity for secession, which were climaxed in 1861 by secession itself. Just what fears and hopes, what prejudices and passions, operated during that fateful decade to change the verdict from Union to Disunion cannot be gauged with precision ; but surface manifestations of the process …

Anthropology In Florida, Rhea M. Smith Dec 2020

Anthropology In Florida, Rhea M. Smith

Florida Historical Quarterly

Any attempt to investigate the origin and customs of the aborigines of Florida through reliance on written materials is almost immediately frustrated by the paucity of such material and the scantiness of data available. Even an attempt to summarize the work done by field investigators leads to the baffling task of trying to reconcile conflicting theories, a condition that arises from the fact that the conclusions reached as to the origin, antiquity, and life of the early peoples of Florida are so indefinite. Yet there are few regions in the United States more abundantly supplied with mounds that call for …

William Pope Duval: Pioneer And State Builder, James Owen Knauss

Florida Historical Quarterly

The life of William Pope DuVal, the first civil governor of the territory of Florida, should be an attractive study for anyone who is interested in the colorful characters of our frontier history. He belongs to the same class of pioneers as Sam Houston of Texas. Frontiersmen of this type not only were among the vanguard as settlers but also remained long in the new settlements as leaders in their development. Hence, a study of DuVal’s life, while interesting for many reasons, is particularly important because it enables us to see a cross section of the history of Florida between …

The Extent And Importance Of Federal Naval Raids On Salt-Making In Florida, 1862-1865, Ella Lonn Dec 2020

The Extent And Importance Of Federal Naval Raids On Salt-Making In Florida, 1862-1865, Ella Lonn

Florida Historical Quarterly

When one thinks of the naval operations of the War for Southern Independence he is likely to consider only the exploits of the Alabama and other raiders, the duel of the Merrimac and Monitor, the continuous efforts to prevent the blockade-runners slipping into secluded harbors, and the battles of the fleets and forts. It is most unlikely that he knows of the persistent and very important operations of the Union navy all along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from Norfolk to Vermillions Bay in Louisiana to wreck the saltmaking of the Confederates.

International Rivalry In The Creek Country Part I, The Ascendency Of Alexander Mcgillivray 1783-1789, Lawrence Kinnaird

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Creek nation with its lands situated in regions claimed both by Spain and the United States occupied a strategic position at the close of the War of the American Revolution. Since no treaty existed between the two countries the question of boundaries was left entirely for future determination. The Spaniards desired to extend the limits of the Floridas as far northward as possible; while the Americans wished to establish the boundary near the Gulf as specified in the treaty with Great Britain.

United States Troops In Spanish East Florida, 1812-13, Part V, T. Frederick Davis Dec 2020

United States Troops In Spanish East Florida, 1812-13, Part V, T. Frederick Davis

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the preceding issues of the QUARTERLY, starting with July, 1930, we followed the career of a detachment of United States regulars during their occupancy of Spanish East Florida beginning March 18, 1812, as told by their commander, Col. Thomas A. Smith, in his official and semi-official correspondence, much of which has never appeared in print before. The last issue brought the story to the time when Col. Smith turned the command over to Maj. Lawrence Manning, of the 8th U.S. Infantry, and bade adieu to the little detachment that he had led into the Spanish province more than a …

Role Of Interplay Of Austenite And Martensite Phase Fractions On The Magnetocaloric And Magnetoresistance Effects Across The Martensite Transition In Ni45Mn44Sn7In4Heusler Alloy Near Room Temperature, T. Chabri, Kartik Ghosh, D. Mukherjee, T. K. Nath Dec 2020

K. Nath

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

The influence of martensite and austenite phase fractions on the magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance (MR) properties has been studied across the first-order magneto-structural martensite transition in the polycrystalline Ni45Mn44Sn7In4 Heusler alloy near room temperature. Here, we have studied in detail the structural, calorimetric, magnetic, magnetocaloric, and magneto-resistance properties of the Ni45Mn44Sn7In4 Heusler alloy. The detailed investigation of thermal and magnetic field path dependent magnetization and resistivity reveals that In incorporation in the alloy increases the martensite transition (MT) temperature, magnetocaloric effect (MCE), and MR properties of the sample at relatively low magnetic fields near the room temperature. The temperature and magnetic …

"Moral Of The Story": How Children’S Books Regulated Race Relations Starting Before The Civil War To Today, Faleya Scales

History: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The relationship between the racial content displayed in children's books and the development of relationships between blacks and whites has consistently been one that has been overlooked. The purpose of this article is to address the correlation between the two topics while also explaining how racial propaganda in children's books has affected the psychology of those in the relationship. Children's books are key components of everyone's childhood and understanding how they have impacted how we think and behave in relationships with the other race is the key topic highlighted in this article. Not only do you get a perspective into …
