Comparison Of The Effects Of "Hot" And "Cold" Chinese Medicinal Plants On The Production Of Inflammatory Mediators By Raw 264.7 Cells, S.-C. Ho, P.-J. Tsai
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
The hot/cold balance system plays an important therapeutic role in traditional Chinese medicine and is applied in food selection by East Asians. Foods traditionally considered "hot" have been demonstrated to have the ability to enhance basal prostaglandin E2 production Conversely, foods considered "cold" can suppress prostaglandin E2 production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated cells. Therefore, this study attempted to further confirm the previous hypotheses by selecting four Chinese medicinal plants and comparing their natural hot or cold characteristic influences on the production of inflammatory mediators. Herbs traditionally regarded as hot (Coptis chinensis and Scutellaria baicalensis) or cold (Zingiber officinale and Cinnamomum cassia) …

A facile reversed-phase HPLC method for the analysis of aristolochic acid (AA) and aristolactam (AL) analogues was developed and used for the quantitative determination and quality control of the traditional Chinese medicine. Homonymic Chinese crude drugs such as Stephania tetrandra and Aristolochia fanchi Clematis armandii and A. manshuriensis can be easily identified by this method. The quantitative determination of AAs and ALs in 12 species of Aristolochia (A. elegans, A. zollingeriana, A. cucurbitifolia, A. mollis, A. kaempferi, A. shimadii, A. heterophylla, A. debilis, A. foveolata, A. contorta, A. trilobata and A. odoratissima) has been investigated. The chromatograms obtained in this …

Chemical Identification On The Origins Of Phellodendri Cortex, L.-J. Juang, S.-J. Sheu
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Twenty-eight samples of commercial articles of Phellodendri Cortex, originating from Phellodendron amurense RUPRECHT, P. chinense SCHNEID, P wilsonii HAYATA et KANEHIRA, and P chinense SCHNEID. var. glabrius culum SCHNEID, were collected from different herbal markets in Taiwan and Mainland China. The five alkaloids berberine, palmatine, jatrorrhizine, phellodendrine, and magnoflorine were determined by capillary electrophoresis for their contents in the samples, thereby a chemical identification method was established for identifying the sources of the drug materials. As this study turned out, P. chinense var. glabrius culum-was found to be the predominant variety prevailing in Taiwan markets owing to their considerably high …

Detection Of Endotoxin Contamination In Chinese Herbs By Nf-Κb Activity-Based Reporter Assays, Y.-H. Hsu, S.-L. Fu
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Severe LPS contamination in drugs and food can cause health problems and occasionally mislead research conclusions. To ensure the quality of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs (TCMH), LPS contamination problem should be evaluated. We here described a NF-κB activity-based reporter assay to detect LPS contamination. We first created a macrophage cell line with integrated reporter gene consisting of NF-κB-responding sites upstream of the luciferase gene. The presence of LPS leads to NF-κB activation, and thus triggers downstream luciferase expression. The specificity of LPS-derived luciferase activity was confirmed by adding the LPS inhibitor, polymyxin B. In our system, the level of LPS …

Molecular Characterization Of Polysaccharides In Hot-Water Extracts Of Ganoderma Lucidum Fruiting Bodies, Y.-W. Chang, T.-J. Lu
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Polysaccharide components in hot-water extract of Ganoderma lucidum fruiting bodies were separated and their molecular weights and distribution profiles were measured using high-performance size-exclusion chromatography with multi-angle laser light scattering detection (HPSEC-MALLS). Three polysaccharide groups were found in the extract with a weight percentage of 31, 46 and 23%, respectively. The weight-average molecular weights of these groups were 2.08 × 106, 2.3 × 104 and 1.2 × 104 g/mol, respectively. The representative fractions of these 3 groups were obtained using differential precipitation with ethanol at 20, 60 and 80% (v/v) concentrations for further property study. The first group that had …
