Design And Realization Of Optimization System For Rice Type, Weilong Ding, Lifeng Xu, Wei Yang, Gao Nan Aug 2020

Design And Realization Of Optimization System For Rice Type, Weilong Ding, Lifeng Xu, Wei Yang, Gao Nan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: It is widely accepted that in traditional crop ideotype breeding, field trials are time-consuming, yet lacking appropriate ways to evaluate the target morphology to be optimal. In order to obtain ideal crop plant type quickly and automatically, meanwhile to reduce the side effects caused by manual operations in the processes of plant type design, e.g. the growing of labor costs and uncertainty of the outcome, a method based on genetic algorithms (GAs) and functional-structural plant model (FSPM) was proposed in this study to optimize plant type of virtual rice by dynamically adjusting phenotypical traits of rice plants. Based on …

Complex Tissue Regeneration In Mammals Is Associated With Reduced Inflammatory Cytokines And An Influx Of T Cells, Thomas R. Gawriluk, Jennifer Simkin, Corin K. Hacker, John M. Kimani, Stephen G. Kiama, Vanessa O. Ezenwa, Ashley W. Seifert

Biology Faculty Publications

While mammals tend to repair injuries, other adult vertebrates like salamanders and fish regenerate damaged tissue. One prominent hypothesis offered to explain an inability to regenerate complex tissue in mammals is a bias during healing toward strong adaptive immunity and inflammatory responses. Here we directly test this hypothesis by characterizing part of the immune response during regeneration in spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus and Acomys percivali) vs. fibrotic repair in Mus musculus. By directly quantifying cytokines during tissue healing, we found that fibrotic repair was associated with a greater release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (i.e., IL-6, CCL2, and CXCL1) …

A Woman’S Portion: 5000 Years A Slave, Ann R. Glickman Aug 2020

A Woman’S Portion: 5000 Years A Slave, Ann R. Glickman

Theses and Dissertations

Slavery has existed for all of recorded history. The evidence is conclusive that slave systems have almost always been majority female. I suggest that slavery originated as an attempt to control female reproductive capacity, and that this attempt to control was not limited to enslaved women.

Snow-Albedo Feedback In Northern Alaska: How Vegetation Influences Snowmelt, Lucas C. Reckhaus Aug 2020

Snow-Albedo Feedback In Northern Alaska: How Vegetation Influences Snowmelt, Lucas C. Reckhaus

Theses and Dissertations

This paper investigates how the snow-albedo feedback mechanism of the arctic is changing in response to rising climate temperatures. Specifically, the interplay of vegetation and snowmelt, and how these two variables can be correlated. This has the potential to refine climate modelling of the spring transition season. Research was conducted at the ecoregion scale in northern Alaska from 2000 to 2020. Each ecoregion is defined by distinct topographic and ecological conditions, allowing for meaningful contrast between the patterns of spring albedo transition across surface conditions and vegetation types. The five most northerly ecoregions of Alaska are chosen as they encompass …

Analysis Of Olfactory Mrna Cap Modifications Using Rnaseh And Lc-Ms, Ilinca M. Giosan

Theses and Dissertations

In the olfactory system, olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) express odorant receptors (ORs) in a singular fashion through unknown mechanisms. Published data supports the notion that singularity is achieved, in part, through a modification the mRNA strand, perhaps in its 5’cap region. This theoretical study aims to test this 5’cap hypothesis.

Vegetation Phenology As A Function Of Plant Functional Type And Urbanization, Ryan Lennon Aug 2020

Vegetation Phenology As A Function Of Plant Functional Type And Urbanization, Ryan Lennon

Theses and Dissertations

Urban land cover contributes to higher temperatures in urban areas compared to adjacent rural areas, which can cause an earlier start of the growing season for urban vegetation. Variations in plant community characteristics between urban and rural areas also produce intra-urban differences in vegetation phenophases, although few studies have investigated differences in phenology between plant functional types in multiple urban environments. In this study I used an exploratory analysis based on the Landsat Phenology Algorithm and weather station data to quantify differences in leaf-onset dates for different plant functional types in the New York City Metropolitan Area. The results demonstrate …

Assessment Of Wild Ring-Tailed Lemur (Lemur Catta) Populations In Southwestern Madagascar With Implications For The Illegal Pet Trade, Samantha D. Calkins Aug 2020

Assessment Of Wild Ring-Tailed Lemur (Lemur Catta) Populations In Southwestern Madagascar With Implications For The Illegal Pet Trade, Samantha D. Calkins

Theses and Dissertations

Accurate population estimates are critical to inform conservation management of species. Incomplete sampling can lead to population underestimates and lacking conservation efforts. Population surveys are important for assessing human and animal welfare to allow for targeted conservation action. Recent ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) surveys have led researchers to conclude that L. catta populations are crashing. This has generated much attention and alarm, but may also be based on incomplete information. To better understand population dynamics, more thorough sampling is needed. Here, we survey five such sites to reassess the presence and abundance of L. catta in these locations. …

Assessing The Potential For Range Expansion Of The Red Tide Algae Karenia Brevis, Edward W. Young Aug 2020

Assessing The Potential For Range Expansion Of The Red Tide Algae Karenia Brevis, Edward W. Young

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Phytoplankton communities are vital to oceanic ecosystems. While most are harmless or beneficial, a select group possesses the capability to produce toxins and cause mass die-offs of marine organisms. Florida red tide, caused by blooms of the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis, is common in the Gulf of Mexico, although blooms have been transported to the Atlantic coast and impacted estuaries where K. brevis is not normally found. An in-depth overview of compiled estuary research evaluated the possibility of the continued spread of Florida red tide blooms to Southeastern Atlantic estuaries and the likelihood of establishment in non-native regions. A …

Effects Of Surfactants On The Generation Of Sea Spray During Tropical Cyclones, Breanna L. Vanderplow Aug 2020

Effects Of Surfactants On The Generation Of Sea Spray During Tropical Cyclones, Breanna L. Vanderplow

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Despite significant improvement in computational and observational capabilities, predicting intensity and intensification of major tropical cyclones remains a challenge. In 2017 Hurricane Maria intensified to a Category 5 storm within 24 hours, devastating Puerto Rico. In 2019 Hurricane Dorian, predicted to remain tropical storm, unexpectedly intensified into a Category 5 storm and destroyed the Bahamas. The official forecast and computer models were unable to predict rapid intensification of these storms. One possible reason for this is that key physics, including microscale processes at the air-sea interface, are poorly understood and parameterized in existing forecast models.

Under tropical cyclones, the air-sea …

Without Words: Relational Neuropsychology And Creative Arts Therapies With People Managing Aphasia, Autumn Marie Chilcote Aug 2020

Without Words: Relational Neuropsychology And Creative Arts Therapies With People Managing Aphasia, Autumn Marie Chilcote

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aphasia describes the broad experience of disrupted language production or comprehension acquired after structural changes in the brain. These changes, usually associated with stroke, tumor, or cortical degeneration, are often co-occurring with other symptoms, such as emotional dysregulation, partial paralysis, and difficult social, occupational, and community relationships. Common approaches to research and rehabilitation with persons managing aphasia highlight conversation and semantic retrieval, with a lack in literature considering the diversity of symptoms and responses. Questions arise as to the ways that psychotherapies, typically language- centered, can be adapted to collaborative, low-verbal approaches that attend to the range of individual symptoms …

How Natural Materials Affect Our Perception Of The Built Environment, Iryna Demianiuk Aug 2020

How Natural Materials Affect Our Perception Of The Built Environment, Iryna Demianiuk

International Programs

Our daily life is shaped by the emotions we feel, and our emotions are highly dependent on the environment we live in. Those connections have been developing through the whole history of humankind, starting with the feeling of shelter near bonfires in caves. Today, we can discover neural responses to environmental conditions and even certain materials around us. Those findings have allowed architects and neuroscientists to work more closely together, and, through that collaboration, the new field of neuroarchitecture appeared. This relatively young discipline explores the way our brain responds to the environmental stimuli we are facing, and how different …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Transgender Body Image And Mental Health: A Qualitative Perspective, Drue B. Sahuc Mr Aug 2020

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Transgender Body Image And Mental Health: A Qualitative Perspective, Drue B. Sahuc Mr

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an examination of the role that public spaces and social groups play in the strengthening of the body image and mental health of transgender individuals. Using Minority Stress Theory and the theories of West and Zimmerman concerning “doing” gender, along with Goffman’s theories of gender advertisement and interaction rituals, a discourse can be created on the impact on transgender individuals’ body image and mental health during public health issues that require stay-at-home mandates. When public health issues like COVID-19 occur, transgender people find themselves isolated, creating a potential for heightened issues with body dysphoria, depression, and other …

Flight Data Of Airplane For Wind Forecasting, Astha Sharma

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This research solely focuses on understanding and predicting weather behavior, which is one of the important factors that affect airplanes in flight. The future weather information is used for informing pilots about changing flight conditions. In this paper, we present a new approach towards forecasting one component of weather information, wind speed, from data captured by airplanes in flight. We compare NASA’s ACT-America project against NOAA’s Wind Aloft program for prediction suitability. A collinearity analysis between these datasets reveals better model performance and smaller test error with NASA’s dataset. We then apply machine learning and a genetic algorithm to process …

Faculty Publications

Introduced in the literature in 1913 by Bergius, who at the time was studying biomass coalification, hydrothermal carbonisation, as many other technologies based on renewables, was forgotten during the "industrial revolution". It was rediscovered back in 2005, on the one hand, to follow the trend set by Bergius of biomass to coal conversion for decentralised energy generation, and on the other hand as a novel green method to prepare advanced carbon materials and chemicals from biomass in water, at mild temperature, for energy storage and conversion and environmental protection. In this review, we will present an overview on the latest …

Structure And Evolution Of Lizard Immunity Genes, Trent Santonastaso Aug 2020

Structure And Evolution Of Lizard Immunity Genes, Trent Santonastaso

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

One of the most important gene families to play a role in adaptive immunity is the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). MHC class II loci are considered to be the most variable loci in the vertebrate genome, and studies have shown that this variability can be maintained through complex co-evolutionary dynamics between host and parasite. Despite the rich body of research into the MHC, there is comparatively little understanding of its genomic architecture in reptiles. Similarly, loci associated with innate immunity have received little attention in reptiles compared to other vertebrates. In the first chapter, we investigated the structure and organization …

Analysis Of Vector Sensor Data Collected In Gulf Of Mexico, Timothy S. Vann Aug 2020

Analysis Of Vector Sensor Data Collected In Gulf Of Mexico, Timothy S. Vann

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 2015, the Naval Oceanographic Office collected vector sensor data in approximately 100 meters of water southwest of Panama City, Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. The vector sensor was deployed at a center mass height of one foot above the seafloor and de-coupled from its mooring through lightweight springs to measure local acoustical pressure and particle velocity.

Accuracy of the data across frequency and source azimuth is measured by evaluating acoustical impedance as a function of frequency and source azimuthal direction. Results indicate the vector sensor has an effective band from 50 to 450 Hz with mooring reflections and …

Salient Region Detection Based On Object-Biased Gaussian Refinement And Global Contrast, Cai Qiang, Ziyu Xue, Dianhui Mao, Haisheng Li Aug 2020

Salient Region Detection Based On Object-Biased Gaussian Refinement And Global Contrast, Cai Qiang, Ziyu Xue, Dianhui Mao, Haisheng Li

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In view of the disadvantages such as the incomplete detection in image boundary which is caused by the global contrast significance detection algorithm, a visual saliency detection algorithm was proposed named salient region detection based on object-biased Gaussian refinement and global contrast. After segmentation based on graph, the global contrast was used to calculate the saliency value of each segmentation blocks. According to the location of the salient object, the center of the Gaussian model was adjusted. Both saliency detection value and Gaussian model combined effect of the final saliency values. The method paid attention to the …

A Causal Analysis Of Conservation Practices On Corn Yield:Evidence From The Mississippi Delta And Arkansas Delta, Melody Afrane Pinamang Aug 2020

A Causal Analysis Of Conservation Practices On Corn Yield:Evidence From The Mississippi Delta And Arkansas Delta, Melody Afrane Pinamang

Theses and Dissertations

Employing the causal inference methods (matching for binary and continuous treatments), I examined the impact of conservation payments on corn yield. I used the propensity score and covariate distance matching and generalized propensity score methods to manage the problem of selection bias since the enrollment of conservation programs (i.e., receiving conservation payments) is not a randomized experiment. Using USDA Economic Research Service – Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ERS-ARMS) field-level data, I assessed whether receiving conservation payments had harm on corn yield in the Mississippi and Arkansas Delta. The findings from the two binary matchings showed that receiving conservation payments didn’t …

Functional Morphology Of Gliding Flight I. Modeling Reveals Distinct Performance Landscapes Based On Soaring Strategies, Lindsay D. Waldrop, Yanyan He, Tyson L. Hedrick, Jonathan Rader

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The physics of flight influences the morphology of bird wings through natural selection on flight performance. The connection between wing morphology and performance is unclear due to the complex relationships between various parameters of flight. In order to better understand this connection, we present a holistic analysis of gliding flight that preserves complex relationships between parameters. We use a computational model of gliding flight, along with analysis by uncertainty quantification, to 1) create performance landscapes of gliding based on output metrics (maximum lift-to-drag ratio, minimum gliding angle, minimum sinking speed, lift coefficient at minimum sinking speed); and 2) predict what …
