Implementing A Loneliness Assessment Tool In An Older Adult Population, Marquette Leach Aug 2020

Implementing A Loneliness Assessment Tool In An Older Adult Population, Marquette Leach

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

Abstract

Loneliness is a subjective experience characterized by a profound decrease in the amount and the quality of desired social connectedness. Community-dwelling older adults are particularly vulnerable to loneliness because of age-related changes such as the loss of driving privileges, loss of a spouse, living alone, socioeconomic changes caused by retirement, and a lack of access to meaningful social activities. These factors diminish an older adult’s sense of belonging, the quality of their social relationships, and the degree to which they are socially engaged. Loneliness presents a significant threat not only to the psychosocial wellbeing of older adults, but also …

Using The Copes Acronym To Improve Nurses’ Response Time In The First Three Minutes Of A Code Blue: A Quality Improvement Project, Linda Baker

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

Abstract

Literature consensus indicates overall Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) survival rates have remained unchanged despite equipment, drugs, and training improvements. Preparing and educating nurses for the inevitable Code Blue (cardiopulmonary event) is a sound and prudent practice. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to provide targeted CPR education, including timely Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and the COPES acronym as part of Basic Life Support (BLS) by improving nurses’ focus and automaticity in the initial minutes of Code Blue events. Combining multiple teaching methods including active learning scenarios (mock codes), question and answer sessions, audio-visuals (technical and non-technical), and …

Preliminary Evidence Of The Role Of Medial Prefrontal Cortex In Self-Enhancement: A Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Study, Birgitta Taylor-Lillquist, Vivek Kanpa, Maya Crawford, Mehdi El Filali, Julia Oakes, Alex Jonasz, Amanda Disney, Julian Keenan Aug 2020

Preliminary Evidence Of The Role Of Medial Prefrontal Cortex In Self-Enhancement: A Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Study, Birgitta Taylor-Lillquist, Vivek Kanpa, Maya Crawford, Mehdi El Filali, Julia Oakes, Alex Jonasz, Amanda Disney, Julian Keenan

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Humans employ a number of strategies to improve their position in their given social hierarchy. Overclaiming involves presenting oneself as having more knowledge than one actually possesses, and it is typically invoked to increase one’s social standing. If increased expectations to possess knowledge is a perceived social pressure, such expectations should increase bouts of overclaiming. As the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) is sensitive to social pressure and disruption of the MPFC leads to decreases in overclaiming, we predicted that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) applied to the MPFC would reduce overclaiming and the effects would be enhanced in the presence of …

Using Functional Communication Training To Reduce Self-Injurious Behavior For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Maryam N. Alakhzami Aug 2020

Using Functional Communication Training To Reduce Self-Injurious Behavior For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Maryam N. Alakhzami

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of functional communication training (FCT) on self-injurious behavior (SIB) of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). FCT was utilized and demand fading procedures were added to the original method. The use of FCT to address SIB maintained by negative reinforcement exhibited by children with ASD is supported by an emerging trend of behavioral research. FCT replaces SIB with a new functional communicative response (FCR) that serves the same function as SIB. However, there is a lack of evidence on how to sustain treatment gains obtained after treatment is discontinued. Thus, …

Communication In The Ruins: Walker Percy And The Art Of Symbolic Mediation, Justin Bonanno Aug 2020

Communication In The Ruins: Walker Percy And The Art Of Symbolic Mediation, Justin Bonanno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation proposes to explore the mediating function of the symbol through the work of Walker Percy. In the first chapter, I provide the necessary background for undertaking this project. First, I situate Percy in his historical moment and review key events in his life that helped to shape his philosophy of communication. Second, I sketch out some of the primary coordinates in Percy’s thought. Percy’s hermeneutic of the self requires an understanding of the difference between sign and symbol, dyadic and triadic events, environment and world, and immanence and transcendence. Third, I review some of the key intersections with …

Evaluating The Biological Effects And Safety Of Exposure To Low, Putatively Safe Concentrations Of The Common Pesticide Chlorpyrifos Using An Anuran Model, Sara Mcclelland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the US, over 1.1 billion pounds of pesticides are applied annually. Unfortunately, pesticides contaminate natural habitats affecting animal health. Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is an organophosphorous insecticide that contaminates surface waters. Few studies have assessed the impacts of CPF at low, ecologically realistic doses. I aimed to test the effects of low dose CPF exposures on biological parameters including body morphology, hormone levels, and brain development in Northern Leopard Frogs (Lithobates pipiens), a common vertebrate model. To determine if CPF exposure has direct impacts or indirectly impacts animals through the disruption of the food web, I examined CPF exposure …

Aphasia Friendly Medication Instructions: Effects On Comprehension In Persons With And Without Aphasia, Anna Saylor Aug 2020

Aphasia Friendly Medication Instructions: Effects On Comprehension In Persons With And Without Aphasia, Anna Saylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accessible health information supports people to understand and manage chronic medical conditions and is frequently presented via text. Comprehension of written health information becomes more difficult for people with language impairments, such as aphasia. Nine people with aphasia (PWA) and nine people without aphasia (PWoA), participated in this study. Each participant reviewed two unmodified medication instructions and two modified medication instructions using aphasia-friendly principles, then answered eight multiple choice questions and provided their preferences. Results showed that PWA demonstrated improved comprehension given modifications, but PWoA’s comprehension did not improve with modifications. Group comparison in the modified condition demonstrated that PWoA …

Efficient Non-Epigenetic Activation Of Hiv Latency Through The T-Cell Receptor Signalosome., Joseph Hokello, Adhikarimayum Lakhikumar Sharma, Mudit Tyagi

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

Human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) can either undergo a lytic pathway to cause productive systemic infections or enter a latent state in which the integrated provirus remains transcriptionally silent for decades. The ability to latently infect T-cells enables HIV-1 to establish persistent infections in resting memory CD4+ T-lymphocytes which become reactivated following the disruption or cessation of intensive drug therapy. The maintenance of viral latency occurs through epigenetic and non-epigenetic mechanisms. Epigenetic mechanisms of HIV latency regulation involve the deacetylation and methylation of histone proteins within nucleosome 1 (nuc-1) at the viral long terminal repeats (LTR) such that the inhibition …

The 1991 Persian Gulf War veterans presented a myriad of symptoms that ranged from chronic pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal disturbances, and cognitive deficits. Currently, no therapeutic regimen exists to treat the plethora of chronic symptoms though newer pharmacological targets such as microbiome have been identified recently. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) antagonism in systemic inflammatory diseases have been tried before with limited success, but strategies with broad-spectrum TLR4 antagonists and their ability to modulate the host-microbiome have been elusive. Using a mouse model of Gulf War Illness, we show that a nutraceutical, derived from a Chinese herb Sparstolonin B (SsnB) presented a …

However, the paired t-test did indicate a statistically significant difference. To assess …

A Bioethical Paradigm For Enhanced, Post Or Transhumans In Medicine And Biological Research, Roderick Williams Aug 2020

A Bioethical Paradigm For Enhanced, Post Or Transhumans In Medicine And Biological Research, Roderick Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation the question addressed is the ethical protocol that should be used when enhanced, post or transhumans present themselves as patients to hospitals, or as subjects for scientific research. With the advent of the birth of four children who were genetically engineered in China to be resistant to HIV, I contend that transhumans are already here, and the prevailing Western paradigm of principlism, while good, is not adequate to the task. I explore the basic religious argument that can be used against or in favor of what I call human-directed human evolution. I show how the fears of …

Therapeutic Potential Of A Ketogenic Diet In The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder, Jordan A. Murrin

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the second most common mental health condition and a leading cause of disability in the world. It is theorized that MDD develops from a combination of biological, psychological, and social stressors. The condition is typically treated using pharmaceuticals and psychotherapy. However, not all individuals with MDD have access to or choose to use these treatments, or may prefer to incorporate therapeutic lifestyle changes such as exercise, sleep, and healthy eating. Even with treatment, MDD can alter brain structure and function, leading to the development of comorbid mental health and chronic metabolic conditions like obesity, cardiovascular …

Bipolar Disorder, Heather Guthrie Aug 2020

Bipolar Disorder, Heather Guthrie

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that causes severe swings in mood, energy, activity, concentration, and activities of daily living. These mood swings range from extremely euphoric, irritable, or animated behavior (manic) to despondent, apathetic, or dejected periods (depressive). This phenomenon was why this disorder was known as manic-depressive or manic depression. The need to understand the multiple factors regarding the disease process of this disorder, and the importance of treatment is vital for the safety and health of people across the world inflicted by bipolar disorder. Education is the key to how this disorder affects the entire trajectory of …

Faculty Research 2020

Mediastinal lymphadenopathy and auto-antibodies are clinical phenomena during ischemic heart failure pointing to an autoimmune response against the heart. T and B cells have been convincingly demonstrated to be activated after myocardial infarction, a prerequisite for the generation of mature auto-antibodies. Yet, little is known about the immunoglobulin isotype repertoire thus pathological potential of anti-heart auto-antibodies during heart failure. We obtained human myocardial tissue from ischemic heart failure patients and induced experimental MI in rats. We found that anti-heart autoimmunity persists during heart failure. Rat mediastinal lymph nodes are enlarged and contain active secondary follicles with mature isotype-switched IgG2a B …

Prediction Of Requirements Engineering Using A Multi Scale Probabilistic Approach: Case Study Ffg(X) Combat Ship, Mahdi Boucetta

Theses and Dissertations

Requirements engineering in a system-engineering project is a key factor in the success of a project. In the current state, stand-alone research has been conducted tackling this area, however, few studies addressed the requirements based on a probabilistic approach. In this thesis, a multi-scale probabilistic approach has been developed, named Bayesian Network, to evaluate the requirements engineering of a complex systems In order to pursue the aim of this paper, the FFG(X) navy ship is chosen to serve as a case study and to validate the proposed model. Results indicate the sub-requirements that highly affect the FFG capability/performance. These sub-requirements …

Pose Estimation Using Limbs Adjustment, Cai Peng, Dehui Kong, Baocai Yin, Huo Yi Aug 2020

Pose Estimation Using Limbs Adjustment, Cai Peng, Dehui Kong, Baocai Yin, Huo Yi

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Human body is decomposed into several local component templates connected with tree structure by articulated pose estimation with mixture-of-parts, and the corresponding full score is used to estimate body pose. Such a method fails in precisely estimating human pose due to the defects of tree models when human has the complicated pose of body. To address this problem, pose estimation using limbs adjustment with mixtures-of-parts models was proposed. And pixel discrete direction, local characteristic functions blending full score and pixel discrete direction and other attributes, and pose estimation using limbs adjustment based on local characteristic functions of articulated position …
