Can I Make The Language Mine? Dynamics And Implications Of Language Ownership Within Esol Classrooms, Megan Ellsworth
MA TESOL Collection
This paper discusses and investigates the concept of ownership with an interest in gathering information which may enable educators to empower learners towards possession and ownership of the English language. The literature review and discussion seek to understand ownership as an experience and the particular dynamics at play with English as the target language: perceptions, attitudes, larger contextual factors which may help or hinder the strength of language ownership. The resulting connection with the target language has an observable impact on the learners’ motivation and engagement with the language-both inside and outside of the classroom. Considering this research, analysis is …

The Cpi-17 (ppp1r14) gene family is an evolutionarily conserved, vertebrate specific group of protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) inhibitors. When phosphorylated, Cpi-17 is a potent inhibitor of myosin phosphatase (MP), a holoenzyme complex of the regulatory subunit Mypt1 and the catalytic subunit PP1. Myosin phosphatase dephosphorylates the regulatory myosin light chain (Mlc2) and promotes actomyosin relaxation, which in turn, regulates numerous cellular processes including smooth muscle contraction, cytokinesis, cell motility, and tumor cell invasion. We analyzed zebrafish homologs of the Cpi-17 family, to better understand the mechanisms of myosin phosphatase regulation. We found single homologs of both Kepi (ppp1r14c) and Gbpi …

The limited number of recombinant events in recombinant inbred lines suggests that for a biparental population with a limited number of recombinant inbred lines, it is unnecessary to genotype the lines with many markers. For genomic prediction and selection, previous studies have demonstrated that only 1000–2000 genome-wide common markers across all lines/accessions are needed to reach maximum efficiency of genomic prediction in populations. Evaluation of too many markers will not only increase the cost but also generate redundant information. We developed a soybean (Glycine max) assay, BARCSoySNP6K, containing 6000 markers, which were carefully chosen from the SoySNP50K assay based …
Physical Activity For Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients: Benchmark Study, Lauren Nicholson
Physical Activity For Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients: Benchmark Study, Lauren Nicholson
MSN Capstone Projects
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune inflammatory condition that affects the joints; without proper treatment and management, RA leads to the destruction of joint function. The standard of care for RA includes medications such as biologic therapy and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. An often-overlooked area of disease management is the implementation of exercise programs for patients with RA. Exercise is known to decrease systemic inflammation, symptoms of depression, and combat fatigue – all common symptoms reported by patients with RA.
Standard of care for patients with RA does not currently include lifestyle management factors such as diet, exercise, and cessation of …

The Application Of A Middle Range Nursing Theory: Roy’S Adaptation Model, To The Caregivers Of Mental Illness Sufferers, Melanie K. Gibson
Theoretical Foundation in Advanced Practice Nursing
Caregivers of mental illness sufferers need supportive measures from health care providers due to the significant emotional, psychological, and physical burdens of this role. I consider the application of the Roy’s Adaptation Model, a middle-range nursing theory, by the nurse practitioner as a framework for assisting this population. Health care providers can apply these guided interventions to encourage, educate, and achieve the caregiver’s optimal wellbeing and quality of life.
The Minor Spliceosome Regulates Alternative Splicing Of Minor Introns In Neuronal Development And Disease, Anouk M. Olthof
The Minor Spliceosome Regulates Alternative Splicing Of Minor Introns In Neuronal Development And Disease, Anouk M. Olthof
Doctoral Dissertations
Expression of ~2% of eukaryotic genes requires the splicing of not just one, but two types of introns: major, as well as minor, introns. These minor introns contain divergent sequences at their splice sites which are recognized by the minor spliceosome (U11, U12, U4atac, U6atac and U5). Since splicing of both intron classes occurs co-transcriptionally, expression of minor intron-containing genes (MIGs) is thought to require the coordinated action of both the major and minor spliceosome. Proper MIG expression is especially important for nervous system development, as underscored by multiple diseases linked to pathogenic variants in minor spliceosome components. To understand …
Statistical Methods For Longitudinal Data With Applications To Dementia And Human Microbiome Projects, Qi Qi
Doctoral Dissertations
We propose three statistical methods for longitudinal ordinal outcomes and categorical outcomes. The proposed Bayesian joint model of longitudinal ordinal outcome and time-to-event data was applied to dementia data to evaluate the prediction accuracy of a staging model for memory impairment. The second method, the Bayesian stochastic model for multistage can be used to measure the correlation across different transition processes. This model was applied to the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) data to investigate the effect of baseline covariates on the change of microbiome type and evaluate the correlation of change in microbiome type and change in healthy status. The …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research project examines the experience of African American male veterans’ social connections with other veterans. Social connection has been found to be a key factor in promoting positive health outcomes and overall well-being. In addition, social connection involves not only a sense of being connected to others but can also include feelings of exclusion. Given the increasing health disparities of between African American and White men, and of our nation’s veteran population, greater attention to factors that promote well-being are essential. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the lived experiences of social connection of African American …

Isolation, Structure Elucidation, And Synthesis Of Natural Products From Marine Cyanobacteria, Keren Solomon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes the isolation, structure elucidation, and synthesis of natural products from marine cyanobacteria. A crude extract from a cyanobacterium collected in Curacao showed selective affinity for the dopamine D5 receptor in a screen against a panel of CNS receptors. Due to the high similarity of the D5 and D1 receptor, to date there are no known ligands that differentiate them. Attempts to purify the compound responsible for this affinity led to the isolation of the known compound caylobolide A. A second extract from a cyanobacterium collected in Panama underwent bioassay-guided fractionation and yielded the novel …
The Dialectic Of Naturgeist In Hegel’S Anthropology: Soul, World, And Bodiliness, Jiho Oh
The Dialectic Of Naturgeist In Hegel’S Anthropology: Soul, World, And Bodiliness, Jiho Oh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary concern of the “Anthropology” section in Hegel’s Encyclopedia of 1830 is the relationship between soul and body: how the soul gains an immediate, bodily existence through embodiment, why and how this immediate mode of the soul’s bodily existence is precarious, and how the soul becomes second nature by overcoming the immediate, bodily existence through habit, more precisely. Importantly, the “Anthropology” is the place in Hegel’s Encyclopedia system where the Philosophy of Nature ends, and the Philosophy of Spirit begins. The thematization of the soul-body relationship in the “Anthropology” is thus essentially framed by a broader, systematic problem concerning …
Differential Expression Of Rna In The Rat Peripheral Nervous System Following Nerve Injury And Treatment With Pain-Relieving Celecoxib-Loaded Nanomedicine, Andrea Stevens
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The neuroinflammatory response to peripheral nerve injury is associated with chronic pain and significant changes in the expression profiles of RNAs in neurons, glia and infiltrating immune cells: a neuro-immune triad. Chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the rat sciatic nerve provides an opportunity to mimic neuropathic injury and quantitatively assess behavior and differential gene expression in individual animals. Macrophages that phagocytose intravenously injected nanoemulsion carrying the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, NSAID, Celecoxib, naturally accumulate at the site of injury resulting in relief of CCI behavioral hyper-sensitivity. It is not known beyond the inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity and the reduction in prostaglandin …
