The Role Of Narrative Thinking In Design:Taking The Mathematical Hall Of The London Science Museum As An Example, He Xiuchuan
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In daily life, people are accustomed to using narrative thinking to understand, communicate and disseminate information naturally and flexibly. Applying narrative thinking to design is a practical and powerful strategy; here, narrative thinking is the default method and mechanism that supports design. This article combines the research results of narrative and narrative thinking in literature and psychology, and draws on and compares the research methods of design thinking to roughly outline the characteristic framework of narrative thinking purpose, process, cognition and evaluation. It then further integrates the characteristics of narrative thinking into the specific case of the Mathematics Hall of …

Ring Polymers As A Model For Cellular Organization, Yu Zhu
Ring Polymers As A Model For Cellular Organization, Yu Zhu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A number of experimental studies have been reported on the spatial organization and collective motion of living cells during the past few decades. To explain the experimentally observed results, we propose a novel approach, in which the cells are modeled as semi-flexible ring polymers. We found that the basic physical properties of the polymer rings, such as average area per cell, elongation, and orientation highly depend on the areal polymer density. Investigations of systems composed of two types of ring polymers with different bending rigidities show that multi-component ring-polymer systems exhibit microphase separation. Simulations of the ring polymers on a …

Murine Flexor Tendon Repair Model With Noninvasive Assessment Of Healing With Ultrasound, Fei Rost
Theses
Flexor tendon injuries in the hands are relatively common, significantly disabling more than 100,000 people in the United States per year (Nichols 2019). The majority of flexor tendon injuries require surgical repair, but despite the advancement of technology and medicine, current treatments still yield poor outcomes. Even with prevailing treatments to improve or restore function to the affected digit(s), patients often suffer psychologically and financially in the long-term. A recent study gave a conservative estimate that flexor tendon lacerations cost the American healthcare system and taxpayers between US $240.8-409.1 million per year and emphasized the need to “focus our efforts …

The motor features of Parkinson’s disease (PD) result from the loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra with autophagy dysfunction being closely linked to this disease. A PD-causing familial mutation in VPS35 (D620N) has been reported to inhibit autophagy. In order to identify signaling pathways responsible for this autophagy defect, we performed an unbiased screen using RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) of wild-type or VPS35 D620N-expressing retinoic acid-differentiated SH-SY5Y cells. We report that VPS35 D620N-expressing cells exhibit transcriptome changes indicative of alterations in extracellular matrix (ECM)-receptor interaction as well as PI3K-AKT signaling, a pathway known to regulate autophagy. Hyaluronan (HA) …

Dynamics Of Interal Phosporus Cycling In A Highly Eutrophic, Shallow, Fresh Water Lake In Utah Lake State Park, Utah, Usa, Sheena Marie Smithson
Theses and Dissertations
Eutrophication is an increasing global concern as human effluent saturates lakes with an over abundance of nutrients. Phosphorus, generally being the limiting nutrient, is often the most impactful, allowing cyanobacteria populations to grow out of control leading to harmful blooms that can produce cyanotoxins, anoxic lake conditions, and mass fish kills. Utah Lake, a shallow highly eutrophic fresh water lake located in central Utah Valley, has experienced these harmful algal blooms for the last several years. The internal phosphorus cycle is a significant driver in Utah Lake's eutrophication, as the sediments act as both a sink and a source for …
Examining Dissolved Gases In A Changing Climate, Allison Staniec
Examining Dissolved Gases In A Changing Climate, Allison Staniec
Doctoral Dissertations
Changing climate scenarios predict a variety of effects across land, ocean, and atmosphere. In this dissertation the effect of several climate change related phenomena on dissolved gases in the coastal ocean and across the ocean-atmosphere interface is examined. Warming temperature, as predicted by the IPCC (2014), has direct impacts on the capacity of water to act as a reservoir for dissolved gases through its effect on their solubility (Chang, 2010). The first portion of this dissertation addresses dissolved gases in a coastal estuary, where warming is expected to be accelerated relative to the open ocean. A representative gas, oxygen, is …

Effector CD8+ T cell activation and its cytotoxic function are positively correlated with improved survival in breast cancer. tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) have recently been found to be involved in gene regulation in cancer progression. However, it is unclear how interactions between expression of tRFs and T cell activation affect breast cancer patient survival. We used Kaplan–Meier survival and multivariate Cox regression models to evaluate the effect of interactions between expression of tRFs and T cell activation on survival in 1081 breast cancer patients. Spearman correlation analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis were conducted to identify genes and pathways that …

Characterization And Optimization Of An Image Charge Detector For The Measurement Of Martian Dust, Jace Rozsa
Characterization And Optimization Of An Image Charge Detector For The Measurement Of Martian Dust, Jace Rozsa
Theses and Dissertations
Image charge detector (ICD) technology has existed for decades. However, not until recently has an ICD been proposed for use in space exploration, specifically for studying the characteristics of the dust on Mars. Characterizing the dust on Mars is crucial for designing equipment to aid manned missions. It also improves our understanding of Mars' climate and weather systems. An ICD utilizing printed circuit board (PCB) electrodes, coupled with a custom differential amplifier, is best suited for this type of measurement because of its light weight, simplicity, and noise performance. The noise floor of our particular amplifier is measured to be …

School of Art, Design and Architecture
This paper introduces GeMS, a system for music composition informed by Synthetic Biology. GeMS generates music with simulations of genetic processes, such as transcription, translation and protein folding, with which biological systems render chains of amino acids from DNA strands. The system comprises the following components: the Miranda Machine, the Rhythmator and the Pitch Processor. The Miranda Machine is an abstract Turing Machine-like processor, which manipulates a sequence of DNA symbols according to a set of programming instructions. This process generates a pool of new DNA strands, which are subsequently translated into rhythms. GeMS represents the musical equivalent of amino …

Metabolomics Analysis Of Annual Killifish (Austrofundulus Limnaeus) Embryos During Aerial Dehydration Stress, Daniel Zajic, Jason Podrabsky
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The annual killifish, Austrofundulus limnaeus, survives in ephemeral ponds in the coastal deserts of Venezuela. Persistence through the dry season is dependent on drought-resistant eggs embedded in the pond sediments during the rainy season. The ability of these embryos to enter drastic metabolic dormancy (diapause) during normal development enables A. limnaeus to survive conditions lethal to most other aquatic vertebrates; critical to the survival of the species is the ability of embryos to survive months and perhaps years without access to liquid water. Little is known about the molecular mechanisms that aid in survival of the dry season. This study …

No Water, No Problem: Stage-Specific Metabolic Responses To Dehydration Stress In Annual Killifish Embryos, Daniel E. Zajic, Jonathon P. Nicholson, Jason Podrabsky
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Annual killifish survive in temporary ponds by producing drought-tolerant embryos that can enter metabolic dormancy (diapause). Survival of dehydration stress is achieved through severe reduction of evaporative water loss. We assessed dehydration stress tolerance in diapausing and developing embryos. We measured oxygen consumption rates under aquatic and aerial conditions to test the hypothesis that there is a trade-off between water retention and oxygen permeability. Diapausing embryos survive dehydrating conditions for over 1.5 years, and post-diapause stages can survive over 100 days. Diapausing embryos respond to dehydration stress by increasing oxygen consumption rates while post-diapause embryos exhibit the same or reduced …
