The Anchor: 2020
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Background
In an energy-limited environment, caloric investments in one characteristic should trade-off with investments in other characteristics. In high pathogen ecologies, biasing energy allocation towards immune function over growth would be predicted, given strong selective pressures against early-life mortality.
Methodology
In the present study, we use flow cytometry to examine trade-offs between adaptive immune function (T cell subsets, B cells), innate immune function (natural killer cells), adaptive to innate ratio and height-for-age z scores (HAZ) among young children (N = 344; aged 2 months–8 years) in the Bolivian Amazon, using maternal BMI and child weight-for-height z scores (WHZ) as …

Mitochondrial Oxidative And Nitrosative Stress And Alzheimer Disease, D. Allan Butterfield, Debra Boyd-Kimball
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Oxidative and nitrosative stress are widely recognized as critical factors in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer disease (AD) and its earlier stage, amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI). A major source of free radicals that lead to oxidative and nitrosative damage is mitochondria. This review paper discusses oxidative and nitrosative stress and markers thereof in the brain, along with redox proteomics, which are techniques that have been pioneered in the Butterfield laboratory. Selected biological alterations in—and oxidative and nitrosative modifications of—mitochondria in AD and MCI and systems of relevance thereof also are presented. The review article concludes with a section …

Exploring The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, Clinical Impairment Assessment, And Autism Quotient To Identify Eating Disorder Vulnerability: A Cluster Analysis, Natalia Stewart Rosenfield, Erik Linstead
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Eating disorders are very complicated and many factors play a role in their manifestation. Furthermore, due to the variability in diagnosis and symptoms, treatment for an eating disorder is unique to the individual. As a result, there are numerous assessment tools available, which range from brief survey questionnaires to in-depth interviews conducted by a professional. One of the many benefits to using machine learning is that it offers new insight into datasets that researchers may not previously have, particularly when compared to traditional statistical methods. The aim of this paper was to employ k-means clustering to explore the Eating Disorder …

Grit And Flow As Prescriptions For Self-Actualization, Samuel Dickinson
Grit And Flow As Prescriptions For Self-Actualization, Samuel Dickinson
Journal of Wellness
Psychology as a discipline has historically focused on psychopathology and associated evidence-based modalities to alleviate symptoms of mental illness and distress. In recent decades, however, there has been a shift towards studying the positive aspects of human experience that make life worth living. This Positive Psychological perspective was utilized by Humanistic Psychologist Abraham Maslow when he created his theory of Self-Actualization, in which he postulated that the highest aim a person can strive towards is to become the absolute best version of themselves, and to maximize their abilities and potential to the highest possible degree. Aside from describing a hierarchy …

Modeling And Simulation For Target Tracking System Based On Dual-Pan-Tilt Camera, Kaishun Xiahou, Shanxing Chen, Yilin Wu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Mathematical model of each component of target tracking system based on dual-pan-tilt camera was established. The rotation angles both in horizontal and vertical direction of each pan-tilt and the relative position of two cameras were adopted to estimate the real-time position of moving target with Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) tracking algorithm. A new real-time calibration method for pan-tilt camera was proposed to deal with the calibration problem that the external parameters of camera changes as the pan-tilt rotates in the process of camera modeling. In addition, the target’s image feature, extracted from the projected point on the camera image …

The Forgotten Students: Covid-19 Response For Youth And Young Adults Aging Out Of Foster Care, Mauriell H. Amechi
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
[First paragraph]
In March 2020, the coronavirus pandemic upended American higher education and shuttered campus doors across the country. As the opening vignette illustrates, many college students reported severe housing and food insecurities as a result. Nevertheless, not all college students experienced COVID-19’s effects and consequences equally. For example, Ivory, a current student enrolled at Concordia University Texas who spent 17 years in foster care, illuminated some of the difficulties she has personally faced in the wake of COVID-19. College students impacted by foster care make up approximately 5% of all undergraduates, and many are struggling to have their basic …

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and Chloroquine (CQ) are two anti-malarial drugs that are now being extensively used by front-line healthcare workers and other common people as a prophylactic drug against the Corona Virus Disease - 19 (COVID-19) in India and as well as in many parts of the world. While only a few in vitro studies have pointed to some efficacy of these drugs as a prophylactic against COVID-19, to date, there are no clinical studies that have established any clinical efficacy of these drugs as a prophylactic. These drugs are commonly used for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Systemic …

Identifying New Markers And Mechanisms Of Mitochondrial Defect During Aging, Catherine Chang
Identifying New Markers And Mechanisms Of Mitochondrial Defect During Aging, Catherine Chang
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses
Mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of aging and has been closely tied to age-related pathologies, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and metabolic syndromes. Though the consequences of mitochondrial defects are well documented, little is known about the molecular events that occur with age that transform healthy mitochondria into dysfunctional ones. Past studies have attempted to uncover the underlying proteomic changes in age, however, most of these results do not take into account population heterogeneity often associated with aging, thus highlighting the need for single-cell analysis. Technological barriers have impeded in-depth proteomic studies of aging mitochondria on a single …

p53 is one of the most intensively studied tumor suppressors. It transcriptionally regulates a broad range of genes to modulate a series of cellular events, including DNA damage repair, cell cycle arrest, senescence, apoptosis, ferroptosis, autophagy, and metabolic remodeling, which are fundamental for both development and cancer. This review discusses the role of p53 in brain development, neural stem cell regulation and the mechanisms of inactivating p53 in gliomas. p53 null or p53 mutant mice show female biased exencephaly, potentially due to X chromosome inactivation failure and/or hormone-related gene expression. Oxidative cellular status, increased PI3K/Akt signaling, elevated ID1, and metabolism …

Faculty Research 2020
Individual differences in cognitive decline during normal aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are common, but the molecular mechanisms underlying these distinct outcomes are not fully understood. We utilized a combination of genetic, molecular, and behavioral data from a mouse population designed to model human variation in cognitive outcomes to search for the molecular mechanisms behind this population-wide variation. Specifically, we used a systems genetics approach to relate gene expression to cognitive outcomes during AD and normal aging. Statistical causal-inference Bayesian modeling was used to model systematic genetic perturbations matched with cognitive data that identified astrocyte and microglia molecular networks as …

Faculty Research 2020
Biological processes are accomplished by the coordinated action of gene products. Gene products often participate in multiple processes, and can therefore be annotated to multiple Gene Ontology (GO) terms. Nevertheless, processes that are functionally, temporally and/or spatially distant may have few gene products in common, and co-annotation to unrelated processes probably reflects errors in literature curation, ontology structure or automated annotation pipelines. We have developed an annotation quality control workflow that uses rules based on mutually exclusive processes to detect annotation errors, based on and validated by case studies including the three we present here: fission yeast protein-coding gene annotations …

"Identification And Characterization Of Genetic Determinants In Bacteria Involved In Froth Formation At Natural Water Bodies", Swathi A
Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal Theses and Dissertations
Industrialization, modernization, rapid urbanization, and unscientific disposal of inadequately treated sewage and effluent from the various source into surface water bodies has been a major concern leading to water pollution. Frothing of lakes and foam related issues is one such emerging environmental concern in South India. Although several researchers have dealt with the characterization of physical and chemical parameters to understand the mechanism of foam formation, the role of biotic factors has been largely ignored. The main objective of this project is to identify the bacteria present in the froth forming lakes, to identify and characterize the biosurfactant of the …
