Dynamic Scaling Of The Generalized Complementary Relationship (Gcr) Improves Long-Term Tendency Estimates In Land Evaporation, Jozsef Szilagyi, Richard Crago, Ning Ma
Dynamic Scaling Of The Generalized Complementary Relationship (Gcr) Improves Long-Term Tendency Estimates In Land Evaporation, Jozsef Szilagyi, Richard Crago, Ning Ma
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Most large-scale evapotranspiration (ET) estimation methods require detailed information of land use, land cover, and/or soil type on top of various atmospheric measurements. The complementary relationship of evaporation (CR) takes advantage of the inherent dynamic feedback mechanisms found in the soil−vegetation−atmosphere interface for its estimation of ET rates without the need of such biogeophysical data. ET estimates over the conterminous United States by a new, globally calibrated, static scaling (GCR-stat) of the generalized complementary relationship (GCR) of evaporation were compared to similar estimates of an existing, calibration-free version (GCR-dyn) of the GCR that employs a temporally varying dynamic scaling. Simplified …

Localization of Repressor Activator Protein 1 (RAP1) to the telomere is essential for its telomeric functions. RAP1 homologs either directly bind the duplex telomere DNA or interact with telomere-binding proteins. We find that Trypanosoma brucei RAP1 relies on a unique double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) binding activity to achieve this goal. T. brucei causes human sleeping sickness and regularly switches its major surface antigen, variant surface glycoprotein (VSG), to evade the host immune response. VSGs are monoallelically expressed from subtelomeres, and TbRAP1 is essential for VSG regulation. We identify dsDNA and single-stranded DNA binding activities in TbRAP1, which require positively charged 737RKRRR741 …

Academic advising outcomes can be linked to both student success and retention. Yet relatively little is known specifically related to advising in physiology programs. Pro- fessional organizations dedicated to academic advising in general, and more specifically advising future health professional students exist, yet, whether current physiology programs utilize these resources remains unknown, as does a number of other demographic informa- tion about advising in physiology programs. Here we present data gathered from a sample of physiology educators to inform what current advising practices of physiology students are. Forty-five re- spondents from a variety of institutions and programs provided information on …

In the present investigation, the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) conditions and optimization of Rhododendron arboreum polysaccharide (RAP) yield were studied by a Box–Behnken response surface design and the evaluation of its antioxidant potential. Three parameters that affect the productivity of UAE, such as extraction temperature (50–90 ◦C), extraction time (10–30 min), and solid–liquid ratio (1–2 g/mL), were examined to optimize the yield of the polysaccharide percentage. The chromatographic analysis revealed that the composition of monosaccharides was found to be glucose, galactose, mannose, arabinose, and fucose. The data were fitted to polynomial response models, applying multiple regression …

© 2020 by the authors. Coronaviruses are viral infections that have a significant ability to impact human health. Coronaviruses have produced two pandemics and one epidemic in the last two decades. The current pandemic has created a worldwide catastrophe threatening the lives of over 15 million as of July 2020. Current research efforts have been focused on producing a vaccine or repurposing current drug compounds to develop a therapeutic. There is, however, a need to study the active site preferences of relevant targets, such as the SARS-CoV-2 main protease (SARS-CoV-2 Mpro), to determine ways to optimize these drug compounds. The …

(In)Formal Marriage Equality, Michael J. Higdon
Scholarly Works
In 2015, same-sex couples throughout the United States obtained formal marriage equality. But is the prospective ability to obtain marriage licenses sufficient to achieve Obergefell’s promise of equality? What about individuals whose same-sex relationship did not survive — either through death or dissolution — to see marriage equality become the law of the land? Or those who did ultimately wed but now have a marriage that appears to be artificially short when considering just how long the couple has actually been together in a marriage-like relationship? With marriage benefits conditioned not only on the fact of marriage but also the …

A Note On The Nonequilibrium Stationary State In Continuous-Activity Thermostatted Models, Carlo Bianca, Marco Menale
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The present paper addresses uniqueness of the nonequilibrium stationary state of a continuous-activity thermostatted kinetic theory framework. Specifically, a sufficient condition for the existence and uniqueness of the nonequilibrium stationary state is established. The sufficient condition defines a relation between the interaction rate and the magnitude of the external force. The proof of the main result is obtained by employing fixed-point arguments.
Asymptotic Stability Of Illicit Drug Dynamics With Banditry Compartment, Akanni John Olajide
Asymptotic Stability Of Illicit Drug Dynamics With Banditry Compartment, Akanni John Olajide
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Substance abuse is one of the major global health and social problems. In view of this, a mathematical model was designed to analyze the dynamics of drug abuse and banditry among population. Necessary conditions for the existence and stability of drug abuse and banditry steady states are derived. The drug abuse and banditry reproduction number is evaluated. A locally asymptotically stable drug abuse and banditry-free equilibrium at the drug abuse and banditry basic reproduction number less than unity is proved via the analysis of characteristic equation. Whereas, the existence of a locally asymptotically stable drug abuse and banditry-present equilibrium is …

Early disease detection and prevention play a very significant role in reducing deaths as well as the cost of healthcare. It was found that 8% of women were diagnosed with Breast Cancer (BC) throughout their life. BC is characterized by gene mutation, constant pain, as well as changes in size, color (redness), and breast skin texture. Machine Learning (ML) technologies play an important role in diagnosing and predicting the prognosis of BC. Also, it helps in recognizing people with BC, distinguish benign from malignant tumors using classification techniques. In the current study, we apply four various classifier algorithms: K-star, Na …

Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) is a hardware or software application that allows computer networks to detect, recognize and avoid the harmful activities, which attempt to compromise the integrity, privacy or accessibility of computer network. Two detection techniques are used by the NIDSs, namely, the signature-based and anomaly-based. Signature-based intrusion detection depends on the detection of the signature of the known attacks. On the other hand, the anomaly-based intrusion detection depends on the detection of anomalous behaviours in the networks. Snort is an open source signature-based NIDS and can be used effectively to detect and prevent the known network attacks. …

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, we investigate the existence of a unique solution to nonlinear Fredholm integro-differential equation. The exact solution of the proposed equation using the direct calculation method is given. We combine the finite difference method with the composite Simpson method to find the numerical solution of the equation. The error estimate of our scheme is discussed in this article. Finally, to illustrate the accuracy of the proposed method, we give five numerical examples and compare the exact solution with the numerical solution.

The Maya area has long been characterized as a mosaic of polities large and small, with cultural connections, linguistic dialects, ethnicities, and economic networks that shifted, expanded, and contracted over time. In this paper, we examine different ways of constructing boundaries. From physical demarcations in the landscape to habitual practices of interaction and affiliation, the lines that tied and divided were both unstable and multiple. We draw on definitions and theories from anthropology, history, and geography to review the concepts of borders, frontiers, and boundaries and their implications for the Maya …
