Incorporating Problem-Based Learning In An Undergraduate Allied Health Prerequisite Anatomy And Physiology Course, Alexandra A. Vita, Emily A. Royse, Nicholas A. Pullen
Teaching & Assessment Symposium Recordings
Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) is one of the final biology prerequisites undergraduate students enroll in before progressing in nursing and allied health degree programs. Using design-based research methods to examine our backward design approach, we defined learning objectives for an advanced A&P lab course, created aligned assessments, and are implementing new activities iteratively over four semesters. We are evaluating student learning outcomes using a previously validated homeostasis concept inventory. Our preliminary results suggest that students experience persisting misconceptions about homeostasis despite instruction, but in future semesters, we aim to support student learning of physiology topics through problem-based learning.

Following publication of the original article [1], the authors identified an error in Fig. 4. The error was made in the x-axis labels of the three panels, which were noted as “pairwise dN/dS”. The figure represents distributions of dS, so the labels were corrected as “pairwise dS”. The correct Fig. 4 is given below. (Figure Presented).

This study aimed to reiterate the use of Chemistry demonstrations as effective teaching tools to students while addressing some of its drawbacks, which discourages teachers from doing them such as cost and safety. Four chosen existing Chemistry demonstrations (Blue Bottle Experiment, Copper Sulfate Experiment, Blown Away, Dancing Flames) were modified by using substitute reagents, which are more accessible, relatively safer, and at lower cost. These demonstrations were chosen based on how easily the substitute reagents will be obtained. Afterwards, with the permission of a private junior high school, they were presented to a group of Grade 9 students of their …

Metabolic flux analysis requires both a reliable metabolic model and reliable metabolic profiles in characterizing metabolic reprogramming. Advances in analytic methodologies enable production of high-quality metabolomics datasets capturing isotopic flux. However, useful metabolic models can be difficult to derive due to the lack of relatively complete atom-resolved metabolic networks for a variety of organisms, including human. Here, we developed a neighborhood-specific graph coloring method that creates unique identifiers for each atom in a compound facilitating construction of an atom-resolved metabolic network. What is more, this method is guaranteed to generate the same identifier for symmetric atoms, enabling automatic identification of …

BACKGROUND: Septic Emergency Department (ED) patients provide a unique opportunity to investigate early sepsis. Recent work focuses on exosomes, nanoparticle-sized lipid vesicles (30-130 nm) that are released into the bloodstream to transfer its contents (RNA, miRNA, DNA, protein) to other cells. Little is known about how early changes related to exosomes may contribute to the dysregulated inflammatory septic response that leads to multi-organ dysfunction. We aimed to evaluate proteomic profiles of plasma derived exosomes obtained from septic ED patients and healthy controls.
METHODS: This is a prospective observational pilot study evaluating a plasma proteomic exosome profile at an urban tertiary …

Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI), specifically ecoroofs, is increasingly seen as an effective stormwater management tool in urban planning strategies. However, the literature suggests that ecoroofs can be sources of certain metals and nutrients. The goal of our study was to address two research questions: 1) How does ecoroof runoff compare to conventional roof runoff chemically: do ecoroofs retain certain chemicals and leach others? and 2) what are the roof characteristics and environmental variables that affect runoff quality? For 10 months, runoff events from an ecoroof were compared to those of a conventional roof; water samples were collected with autosamplers, and …

Mechanism And Chemoselectivity For Hocl-Mediated Oxidation Of Zinc-Bound Thiolates, Lindsay Zumwalt, Arden Perkins, O. Maduka Ogba
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Quantum mechanical calculations reveal the preferred mechanism and origins of chemoselectivity for HOCl‐mediated oxidation of zinc‐bound thiolates implicated in bacterial redox sensing. Distortion/interaction models show that minimizing geometric distortion at the zinc complex during the rate‐limiting nucleophilic substitution step controls the mechanistic preference for OH over Cl transfer with HOCl and the chemoselectivity for HOCl over H2O2.

Inhibitors of the bacterial enzyme dapE-encoded N-succinyl-l,l-diaminopimelic acid desuccinylase (DapE; EC 3.5.1.18) hold promise as antibiotics with a new mechanism of action. Herein we describe the discovery of a new series of indoline sulfonamide DapE inhibitors from a high-throughput screen and the synthesis of a series of analogs. Inhibitory potency was measured by a ninhydrin-based DapE assay recently developed by our group. Molecular docking experiments suggest active site binding with the sulfonamide acting as a zinc-binding group (ZBG).

Upjohn Institute Working Papers
We investigate whether excessively optimistic beliefs play a role in the persistent demand for doctoral and postdoctoral training in science. We elicit the beliefs and career preferences of doctoral students through a novel survey and randomize the provision of structured information on the true state of the academic market and information through role models on nonacademic careers. One year later, both treatments lead students to update their beliefs about the academic market and impact career preferences. However, we do not find an effect on actual career outcomes two years postintervention.

Increased Epicardial Adipose Tissue Is Associated With The Extent Of Aortic Dissection, Ahmet S. Yõlmaz
Increased Epicardial Adipose Tissue Is Associated With The Extent Of Aortic Dissection, Ahmet S. Yõlmaz
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Background: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a biologically active organ that has endocrine and paracrine functions. Endothelial dysfunction, systemic, and local inflammatory response, due to bio-active molecules produced by EAT, may affect aortic dissection propagation and extent. We investigated the association between EAT thickness and the extent of aortic dissection.
Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 78 patients with aortic dissection diagnosed by thoracoabdominal Computerized Tomography (CT). EAT was measured from the thickest part of the perpendicular plane between the pericardium and free wall of the right ventricle using CT. Aortic dissection length was measured from the beginning to the end of …

Recombinant bacterial cocaine esterase (CocE) represents a potential protein therapeutic for cocaine use disorder treatment. Unfortunately, the native enzyme was highly unstable and the corresponding mutagenized derivatives, RBP-8000 and E196-301, although improving in vitro thermo-stability and in vivo half-life, were a partial solution to the problem. For cocaine use disorder treatment, an efficient cocaine-metabolizing enzyme with a longer residence time in circulation would be needed. We investigated in vitro the possibility of developing red blood cells (RBCs) loaded with RBP-8000 and E196-301 as a biocompatible system to metabolize cocaine for a longer period of time. RBP 8000 stability within human …

The evolution of wing morphology among birds, and its functional consequences, remains an open question, despite much attention. This is in part because the connection between form and function is difficult to test directly. To address this deficit, in prior work we used computational modeling and sensitivity analysis to interrogate the impact of altering wing aspect ratio, camber, and Reynolds number on aerodynamic performance, revealing the performance landscapes that avian evolution has explored. In the present work, we used a dataset of three-dimensionally scanned bird wings coupled with the performance landscapes to test two hypotheses regarding the evolutionary diversification of …
