Role Of Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated In The Repair Of Magnetite Nanoparticles Induced Double Strand Breaks Associated With Heterochromatin, Mie Mohamed Mounir Sep 2020

Role Of Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated In The Repair Of Magnetite Nanoparticles Induced Double Strand Breaks Associated With Heterochromatin, Mie Mohamed Mounir

Theses and Dissertations

Magnetite nanoparticles particulate matter pollution is escalating in large cities like New Mexico, Manchester city, Cairo, and New Delhi. Combustion derived Magnetite nanoparticles was found deposited in internal vital organs of deceased residents of urban areas. A great deal of research focused on the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of Magnetite Nanoparticles (MNPs). In our work we focus on the mechanisms employed in DNA repair of higher chromatin structures. We employed the sensitive analysis of anti γ-H2AX to detect and monitor the repair of DSBs following exposure to MNPs. A 2- fold delay in the repair of heterochromatin associated DSBs in …

Novel Dna Ligases From The Red Sea Brine Pools: Cloning, Expression, In Silico Characterization And Comparative Thermostability, Iyanu Mumeen Oduwole

Theses and Dissertations

Extreme physicochemical conditions such as high temperature, salinity, and the presence of heavy metal are characteristics of some of the Red Sea brine pools environment. We screened two Red Sea Brine pools (Atlantis II(AT-II), and Discovery Deeps (DD), and one interface layer (Kebrit Deep) to identify novel DNA ligases with potential extreme biochemical properties. Furthermore, we did an in silico comparative thermostability study by examining the stability role of proline and arginine residues at the loop conformations and exposed regions of ligase sequences from metagenomic assemblies of different extreme environments, including the Red Sea metagenomes. A sequence-based metagenomics approach was …

Signature Pedagogies: A Framework For Pedagogical Foundations In Counselor Education, Eric R. Baltrinic, Carrie Wachter Morris

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

The authors offer signature pedagogies, which refer to the particular types of teaching distinct to a particular profession, as a framework for conceptualizing and advancing our knowledge about the pedagogical foundations in counselor education. Signature pedagogies are further defined at the professional, program, and course levels along with examples to connect signature pedagogies to the discipline of counselor education. The authors offer refection questions to encourage readers to apply the content of this article to their own conceptualizations of pedagogy and conceptualize research designs grounded in a unified understanding of pedagogy. Implications for counselor education and future research are presented.

Faculty Research 2020

Developing strategies to maintain cognitive health is critical to quality of life during aging. The basis of healthy cognitive aging is poorly understood; thus, it is difficult to predict who will have normal cognition later in life. Individuals may have higher baseline functioning (cognitive reserve) and others may maintain or even improve with age (cognitive resilience). Understanding the mechanisms underlying cognitive reserve and resilience may hold the key to new therapeutic strategies for maintaining cognitive health. However, reserve and resilience have been inconsistently defined in human studies. Additionally, our understanding of the molecular and cellular bases of these phenomena is …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Statistical properties of near-surface horizontal velocity gradients are obtained from four drifter experiments conducted in the Gulf of Mexico during Summer 2012 and Winter 2016. The data density provided by the near-simultaneous deployments of 90-326 surface drifters in each allows direct, drifter-based estimates of the scale dependence of velocity gradients at separation scales ranging from 200 m to 5 km. The robustness of these estimates, derived from uniquley sampled, nearly equilateral triplets, is confirmed by comparisons with estimates produced from larger drifter clusters, and with estimates based on concurrent Eulerian X-band radar observations. The winter launches were deployed above a …

Faculty Research 2020

The premise of Open Science is that research and medical management will progress faster if data and knowledge are openly shared. The value of Open Science is nowhere more important and appreciated than in the rare disease (RD) community. Research into RDs has been limited by insufficient patient data and resources, a paucity of trained disease experts, and lack of therapeutics, leading to long delays in diagnosis and treatment. These issues can be ameliorated by following the principles and practices of sharing that are intrinsic to Open Science. Here, we describe how the RD community has adopted the core pillars …

Call Of The Wild: A Qualitative Analysis Of Goal-Setting Among Biology Undergraduates At A Regional Zoo, Ashley Barbara Heim, Emily A. Holt Sep 2020

Call Of The Wild: A Qualitative Analysis Of Goal-Setting Among Biology Undergraduates At A Regional Zoo, Ashley Barbara Heim, Emily A. Holt

Teaching & Assessment Symposium Recordings

Free-choice learning at informal settings among undergraduates is relatively understudied. The purpose of the current study was to qualitatively describe what goals biology students set for themselves during an intervention at a regional zoo, and to describe what types of goals students were able to fulfill during this learning opportunity. Based on student responses on this assessment administered in Fall 2018, we aimed to refine the Goal-Setting Assessment, and give context to our initial findings. Specifically, we intended to refine this assessment so that the items are broad enough to be used both in formal classrooms and out-of-school environments.

Beliefs About Global Climate Change Among Faculty At The University Of Northern Colorado, Cindy Shellito, Emily A. Holt Sep 2020

Beliefs About Global Climate Change Among Faculty At The University Of Northern Colorado, Cindy Shellito, Emily A. Holt

Teaching & Assessment Symposium Recordings

A survey was administered to UNC faculty and instructors in Fall 2019 with the aim of assessing faculty beliefs about global climate change and the role that UNC plays in preparing students for the impacts of global climate change in coming years. A majority of survey respondents (n=226) are concerned that climate change will affect the lives of UNC students in the future and that UNC should be doing more to address global climate change and prepare students. We share survey results and faculty suggestions and comments regarding incorporating global climate issues across a broad disciplinary spectrum.
