Skeptical Buddhism As Provenance And Project, James Mark Shields Sep 2020

Skeptical Buddhism As Provenance And Project, James Mark Shields

Faculty Contributions to Books

The past century and a half has seen various attempts in both Asia and the West to reform or re-conceptualize Buddhism by adding a simple, often provocative, qualifier. This paper examines some of the links between “secular,” “critical,” “sceptical,” and “radical” Buddhism in order to ascertain possibilities in thinking Buddhism anew as a 21st-century “project” with philosophical, ethical, and political resonance. In particular, I am motivated by the question of whether “sceptical” Buddhism can coexist with Buddhist praxis, conceived as an engaged response to the suffering of sentient beings in a globalized and neoliberal industrial capitalist world order. Let …

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia

Introduction. Survival of active multiple myeloma (MM) patients is determined by early diagnosis and various prognostic factors. The development of MM diagnostic criteria from Durie-Salmon (DS) criteria to International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG) 2003 is an attempt to diagnose active MM earlier. However, due to limited resources, these diagnostic criteria cannot be fulfilled consistently in Indonesia. Based on this reason, it is necessary to know the proportion of MM based on DS and IMWG 2003 diagnostic criteria and also their impact on the survival of MM patients in Indonesia. Methods. This was a retrospective cohort study with survival analysis. Subjects …

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia

Introduction. The complete hematologic response is an integral part to achieve the complete cytogenetic response target and the major molecular response of imatinib mesylate therapy, although it does not determine the prognosis. The complete hematologic response in Indonesia is lower than in the world (74% vs. 95%). Sixty percent of chronic myeloid leukemia patients in Indonesia were administered hydroxyurea before imatinib mesylate. Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) patients in Indonesia are younger than in other countries. This study aimed to determine what prognostic factors which affect the complete hematological response of chronic phase CML patients who received imatinib mesylate in Indonesia. …

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis contains two chapters. In chapter one, I report the synthesis of new pyrazole derivatives from dicarboxylic acid containing phenyl-derived, monotrifluoromethyl phenyl-derived, and acetovanillone-derived pyrazole aldehydes using Hantzsch ester. All of our pyrazole compounds have been synthesized efficiently using Hantzsch ester without any catalyst. Most of our pyrazole and thiazole compounds have been effectively recrystallized with acetonitrile and methanol respectively. We have synthesized 99 different pyrazole, 17 fused-thiazole ethisterone, and D-(-) norgestrel derivatives in good yield. In the present research, it has been shown possible to synthesize novel pyrazoles and thiazoles by using readily available starting materials and benign …

Plasma Proteins That May Cause Parkinson’S Disease And Multiple Sclerosis: A Mendelian Randomization Study, Brigid A. Staley Sep 2020

Plasma Proteins That May Cause Parkinson’S Disease And Multiple Sclerosis: A Mendelian Randomization Study, Brigid A. Staley

Dissertations and Theses

Multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are progressively disabling neurologic disorders that profoundly affect quality of life and shorten life expectancy. There is no cure for either disease, and current treatments only alleviate symptoms and may cause serious side effects. The causes of MS and PD are not well understood. Previous epidemiologic studies have documented numerous environmental risk factors for both diseases. However, these studies are inherently prone to bias from confounding which may generate spurious results. The lack of unbiased evidence on environmental causes of MS and PD has been a critical barrier to fully understanding their pathophysiology. …

Comparison Of Thermal And Hydrotime Requirements For Seed Germination Of Seven Stipa Species From Cool And Warm Habitats, Rui Zhang, Kai Luo, Dali Chen, Jerry M. Baskin, Carol C. Baskin, Yanrong Wang, Xiaowen Hu

Biology Faculty Publications

Temperature and water potential are two important environmental factors influencing germination and subsequent seedling establishment. Seed germination requirements vary with species and with the environment in which the seeds are produced. Stipa species dominate large areas of the Eurasian zonal vegetation, but comparisons of germination requirements between Stipa species from different habitats is limited. We investigated the effects of temperature and water potential on seed germination of S. grandis, S. purpurea, and S. penicillata from habitats with low temperatures and relatively abundant rainfall (cool habitats) and S. glareosa, S. breviflora, S. gobiea, and S. bungeana …

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

The hepatic mevalonate (MVA) pathway, responsible for cholesterol biosynthesis, is a therapeutically important metabolic pathway in clinical medicine. Using an unbiased transcriptomics approach, we uncover a novel role of Unc-51 like autophagy activating kinase 1 (ULK1) in regulating the expression of the hepatic de novo cholesterol biosynthesis/MVA pathway genes. Genetic silencing of ULK1 in non-starved mouse (AML-12) and human (HepG2) hepatic cells as well as in mouse liver followed by transcriptome and pathway analysis revealed that the loss of ULK1 expression led to significant down-regulation of genes involved in the MVA/cholesterol biosynthesis pathway. At a mechanistic level, loss of ULK1 …

Public Preferences And Willingness To Pay For Invasive Forest Pest Prevention Programs In Urban Areas, Damian C. Adams, Jose R. Soto, John Lai, Francisco J. Escobedo, Sergio Alvarez, Abu S.M.G. Kibria

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Invasive forest pests can cause environmental and economic damage amounting to billions of dollars (US) in lost revenues, restoration and response costs, and the loss of ecosystem services nationwide. Unfortunately, these forest pests do not stay confined to wildland forest areas and can spread into suburban and urban areas, imposing significant costs on local governments, homeowners, and management agencies. In this study, a contingent valuation experiment is used to estimate Florida residents’ willingness to pay (WTP) a monthly utility fee that would protect urban forests from invasive pests by implementing a monitoring and prevention program for their early detection and …

Unveiling The Molecular Mechanism Of Sars-Cov-2 Main Protease Inhibition From 137 Crystal Structures Using Algebraic Topology And Deep Learning, Duc Duy Nguyen, Kaifu Gao, Jiahui Chen, Rui Wang, Guo-Wei Wei

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Currently, there is neither effective antiviral drugs nor vaccine for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Due to its high conservativeness and low similarity with human genes, SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro) is one of the most favorable drug targets. However, the current understanding of the molecular mechanism of Mpro inhibition is limited by the lack of reliable binding affinity ranking and prediction of existing structures of Mpro-inhibitor complexes. This work integrates mathematics (i.e., algebraic topology) and deep learning (MathDL) to provide a reliable ranking of the binding …

Aptamer-Conjugated Plga Nanoparticles For Delivery And Imaging Of Cancer Therapeutic Drugs, Maryam Hashemi, Azarmidokht Shamshiri, Majid Saeedi, Lobat Tayebi, Rezvan Yazdian-Robati

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Most problems associated with chemotherapeutic agents involve non-specific cytotoxicity, low intratumoral accumulation and drug resistance. Targeted drug delivery systems (TDDS) based on nanoparticles (NPs) are a new strategy for better therapeutic efficiency, along with reduction of side effects commonly seen with cancer drugs. Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), as one of the furthest developed synthetic polymer, has gained significant attention because of excellent properties—including biodegradability and biocompatibility, controlled release of drug, protection of drug or gene from decomposition and ability to modify surface with targeting agents for both cancer diagnosis and therapy. Aptamers are single-stranded RNA or DNA that can fold …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Despite the importance of tropical forests to global carbon balance, our understanding of how tropical plant physiology will respond to climate warming is limited. In addition, the contribution of tropical forest understories to global carbon cycling is predicted to increase with rising temperatures, however, in situ warming studies of tropical forest plants to date focus only on upper canopies. We present results of an in situ field-scale +4°C understory infrared warming experiment in Puerto Rico (Tropical Responses to Altered Climate Experiment; TRACE). We investigated gas exchange responses of two common understory shrubs, Psychotria brachiata and Piper glabrescens, after exposure …

Encouraging Entrepreneurship And Innovation Through Regulatory Democratization, Seth C. Oranburg Sep 2020

Encouraging Entrepreneurship And Innovation Through Regulatory Democratization, Seth C. Oranburg

San Diego Law Review

Law and economics scholars agree that business regulations have a disproportionately negative impact on entrepreneurship and innovation. It would be a significant problem indeed if the very nature of regulation inhibits this kind of growth and creativity. This view of the problem suggests that the only way to increase innovation would be to decrease regulation.

Yet this view is too general. When examined more closely, all regulations are not created equal. Regulations can be formulated as rules or standards, and they can be simple or complex. Moreover, some rules are easily understood by computers and are thus suitable for automated …

Arthropod pests and vectors constrain the livelihood opportunities of people in Africa by debilitating production of crops and livestock and through transmission of vector-borne diseases. In the absence of effective alternative management options to tackle these pests and vectors, there is extensive dependence on synthetic pesticides for their management on crop and livestock systems, with significant negative impacts on animal and human health, and the environment. Biopesticides are effective and environmentally sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides. At the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), the Arthropod Pathology Unit (APU) was established for effective biopesticide research-for-development (R4D), underpinned by …

Signaling And Other Functions Of Lipids In Autophagy: A Review, Alejandro Soto-Avellaneda, Brad E. Morrison Sep 2020

Signaling And Other Functions Of Lipids In Autophagy: A Review, Alejandro Soto-Avellaneda, Brad E. Morrison

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The process of autophagy is integral to cellular function. In this process, proteins, organelles, and metabolites are engulfed in a lipid vesicle and trafficked to a lysosome for degradation. Its central role in protein and organelle homeostasis has piqued interest for autophagy dysfunction as a driver of pathology for a number of diseases including cancer, muscular disorders, neurological disorders, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. For much of its history, the study of autophagy has centered around proteins, however, due to advances in mass spectrometry and refined methodologies, the role of lipids in this essential cellular process has become more apparent. …

Processing Of Slags Of Copper Manufacturing With The Use Of Ideal Mixing Equipment, S.T. Matkarimov, B.T. Berdiyarov, S.K. Nosirkhujayev, K.T. Ochildiyev, B.L. Marjorie

Technical science and innovation

The article discusses the issues of processing slag of copper production using devices that model ideal mixing. It has been shown that the use of this type of apparatus increases the efficiency of physical and chemical processes and significantly reduces the copper content in dump slags. It has been found that the process of reduction of ferric iron oxide by the clinker in the initial period takes place in the kinetic mode. After reducing the concentration of magnetite (3-5%) in the slag, the process of reducing it passes into the diffusion region, that is, restoring the excess content of ferric …

Foraging Behavior Of Rafinesque’S Big-Eared Bats (Corynorhinus Rafinesquii) From A Barn Colony In Rural Arkansas, Crystal Ann Griffin

Student Theses and Dissertations

Studies have been conducted on the foraging behavior of Rafinesque’s big-eared bats (Corynorhinus rafinesquii; CORA) in different habitats types; however, not much is known about their behavior on a highly fragmented, privately owned, agricultural landscape. Bottom land hardwood forests are the main habitat for CORA in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley but very little of this habitat exists due to large-scale conversion to agricultural practices. My objective was to assess the role of reproductive status in foraging behavior of females from a barn during July and August (2018 and 2019) in Jackson County, Arkansas. There was no statistical difference in foraging …

Neural Network Based Life Cycle Cost Analysis Of Metal Culverts Due To Corrosion Risks In Arkansas, Md Ariful Hasan

Student Theses and Dissertations

Corrosion potential of metallic structures in alluvial soils is governed by chemical and electromagnetic properties of the soils. Geotechnical engineers are generally more concerned about soil types and their physical and mechanical properties than the chemical properties. The main objective of this study is to analyze the geotechnical, electrochemical and electromagnetic properties of soils in Arkansas. Important parameters (e.g., soil resistivity) related to corrosion potential of metal culverts have been predicted through neural network (NN) models. The developed NN models have been trained and validated using laboratory test results of soil samples collected from Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT), survey …
