Exploring The Mechanisms Regulating Toroid Formation By Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Cultured On 3d Collagen Hydrogels, Mary-Catherine Cobb
Exploring The Mechanisms Regulating Toroid Formation By Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Cultured On 3d Collagen Hydrogels, Mary-Catherine Cobb
S.U.R.E Posters
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a huge topic of interest to many researchers due to their therapeutic potential. MSCs can be harvested from various body tissues, including bone marrow, blood, and adipose tissue. Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) are of particular therapeutic interest due to their great abundance and ease of accessibility relative to other types of MSCs. We have observed that ADSCs will migrate and self-organize into a toroid when applied to the top of a 3D type I collagen hydrogel. ADSCs fail to form toroids when embedded within collagen hydrogels, which raises the question of what specific environmental …
Generation Of Fluorescent Esophageal Adenocarcinoma Cells For Lineage Tracing Within Composite 3d Culture Models, Madeline G. Linker
Generation Of Fluorescent Esophageal Adenocarcinoma Cells For Lineage Tracing Within Composite 3d Culture Models, Madeline G. Linker
S.U.R.E Posters
While relatively rare, the aggressive nature and poor prognosis associated with esophageal carcinoma make it a particularly dangerous form of cancer. One approach to discovering esophageal cancer treatment options includes the development of composite 3D culture models. This method of research allows cellular interactions and responses toward interventions to be evaluated within a more complex system than 2D cultures. Additionally, a composite 3D model provides a higher throughput and is more cost-effective than in vivo animal studies. To analyze the interactions between the model’s cell types, fluorescent labeling allows each cell type to be distinguished from the others, facilitating independent …

Determination And Assessment Of The Spatio-Temporal Changing Dynamics In The Groundwater Level And Mineralization In Irrigated Areas Under Climate Change (As An Example Of Syrdarya Province), S. Khasanov, S. Adilov, R. Kulmatov
Irrigation and Melioration
In the irrigated lands of the Aral Sea Basin, salinization processes are taking place as a result of rising groundwater levels and increasing its mineralization due to the unsustainable use of water and land resources. This, in turn, leads to the withdrawing of arable land and a decrease in crop yields. This is especially the case in the irrigated areas of the lower reaches of the Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers, located in Uzbekistan, southern Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. This research was aimed to learn and evaluate the long-term changing behavior of groundwater level and mineralization in the irrigated areas of the …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Piglets are born wet, and evaporation of that moisture decreases body temperature, increasing the risk of mortality. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of two commercially applicable methods for drying piglets at birth on piglet rectal temperature over 24 h after birth. The study was carried out in standard commercial farrowing facilities with 52 litters, using a completely randomized design with three Drying Treatments: Control (not dried); Desiccant (dried at birth using a cellulose-based desiccant); Paper Towel (dried at birth using paper towels). Litters were randomly allotted to treatments at the birth of the first piglet. …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Piglets experience a rapid decrease in body temperature immediately after birth, increasing the risk of mortality. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of drying and/or warming piglets at birth on rectal temperature over the first 24 h after birth. The study was carried out at a commercial sow facility using a completely randomized design with four treatments (applied to piglets at birth): Control (no drying or warming), Desiccant (dried using a desiccant), Warming Box (placed in a box under a heat lamp for 30 min), and Desiccant + Warming Box (both dried and warmed as above). …
Diet Analysis Of Gastrotricha, Mikhail Anfinson
Diet Analysis Of Gastrotricha, Mikhail Anfinson
S.U.R.E Posters
The phylum Gastrotricha is comprised of small aquatic organisms that live in between sand grains. It has been shown that meiofauna communities can play valuable roles in ecosystems and serve as a food source for animals higher up the trophic levels. However, little is known about their own feeding behavior which this study is concerned about. Over the summer developments were made in the methodical sections for diet diagnostic PCR for marine bacterial strains, unicellular marine eukaryotes, and investigating different types of immunofluorescence for marine bacteria. We also plan at looking at the number of sarcomeres within the pharynx of …

Microtubule cytoskeleton exists in various biochemical forms in different cells due to tubulin posttranslational modifications (PTMs). Tubulin PTMs are known to affect microtubule stability, dynamics, and interaction with MAPs and motors in a specific manner, widely known as tubulin code hypothesis. At present, there exists no tool that can specifically mark tubulin PTMs in living cells, thus severely limiting our understanding of their dynamics and cellular functions. Using a yeast display library, we identified a binder against terminal tyrosine of α-tubulin, a unique PTM site. Extensive characterization validates the robustness and nonperturbing nature of our binder as tyrosination sensor, a …

The Eyes As A Postmortem Interval Estimation Method, Lauren Dangel
The Eyes As A Postmortem Interval Estimation Method, Lauren Dangel
D.U.Quark
After death, the eyes change physically and chemically in ways that can be measured over time. The postmortem analysis of the changes in the eyes has the potential to become a major contributor to estimating a postmortem interval (PMI). This review will focus on three changes in the eye used to estimate PMI. These include the physical features, the temperature, and the vitreous fluid of the eye. These changes have specific correlations with PMI. This allows for the development of mathematical formulas and standards for use in criminal investigations. However, the validity of the method and an investigation’s evidence can …

Rheological And Component Characterization Of An Innovative Bio-Binder Using Guayule Resin In Partial And Entire Asphalt Replacement, Ahmed Hemida, Magdy Abdelrahman
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Asphalt cement will not last for a long time as the world encounters a diminishment in the crude oil. For sustainable, flexible pavement development, new resources can provide a contribution to replace it partially or entirely. In this study, asphalt was partially and entirely replaced by guayule resin as a bioresource by-product, extracted during the guayule natural rubber production. Crumb rubber modifier (CRM) was used as an asphalt enhancer. The Superpave grading system was followed at high, intermediate, and low temperatures to evaluate such innovative binder for rutting, fatigue, and thermal cracking, respectively, in addition to viscosity. Therefore, the original, …

Anemia in women of reproductive age is highly prevalent globally and remains a public health problem. In Ethiopia, despite efforts to minimize the burden of anemia, it is still a moderate public health problem. Anemia has various etiologies including nutritional deficiency, parasitic infection, and inflammation. The aim of this study was to examine contributing factors to anemia in lactating women. Following ethical approval, and six months after delivery, all lactating women (n = 150) were recruited to participate in this study from eight randomly selected rural villages. Anthropometric and socio-economic factors were assessed. From each, a blood sample was collected …

Water-Soluble Graphene In Agar Gel As Electrolyte For Magnesium-Air Battery, Liew Siaw Ying
Water-Soluble Graphene In Agar Gel As Electrolyte For Magnesium-Air Battery, Liew Siaw Ying
Student Works (2020-2029)
Presently, ever-increasing demands on energy and the global environmental issues have given the impetus to investigate the new battery systems which are inexpensive, efficient, having high performance, and also green to the environment. Among all the battery technologies, magnesium-air (Mg-air) battery is an attractive battery to be developed owing to the interesting properties of the Mg anode. Mg has high specific energy (6.46 kWh kg-1) and reactivity, apart from its high abundance, lower cost, low toxicity, and comparatively safe to handle in the atmosphere. Nevertheless, Mg-air battery is still not being widely investigated as compared to the other batteries. Electrolyte …
