Comparison Of Aging Structures And Life History Of A Historical Population Of Roundtail Chub (Cyprinidae) In The Yampa River, Colorado, Stephen T. Ross, Timothy C. Modde, Derek G. Ross, David Camak

Western North American Naturalist

The Gila robusta complex includes 3 large cyprinid species native to the Colorado River drainage. All 3 members of this complex, Humpback Chub G. cypha, Bonytail Chub G. elegans, and Roundtail Chub G. robusta, historically occurred in the Yampa River Canyon of Colorado and Utah. Both Humpback Chub and Bonytail Chub are federally listed as endangered, and the Roundtail Chub is now considered either imperiled or vulnerable to extinction by all state management agencies in the Colorado River basin. In late June or early July of 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002, we collected Roundtail Chub from the …

Exosomes Secreted Under Hypoxia Enhance Stemness In Ewing's Sarcoma Through Mir-210 Delivery, Matthew J. Kling, Nagendra K. Chaturvedi, Varun Kesherwani, Don W. Coulter, Timothy R. Mcguire, J. Graham Sharp, Shantaram S. Joshi

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

Intercellular communication between tumor cells within the hypoxic microenvironment promote aggressiveness and poor patient prognoses for reasons that remain unclear. Here we show that hypoxic Ewing's sarcoma (EWS) cells release exosomes that promote sphere formation, a stem-like phenotype, in EWS cells by enhancing survival. Analysis of the hypoxic exosomal miRNA cargo identified a HIF-1α regulated miRNA, miR-210, as a potential mediator of sphere formation in cells exposed to hypoxic exosomes. Knockdown of HIF-1α in hypoxic EWS cells led to decreased exosomal miR-210 levels and reduced the capacity of hypoxic exosomes to form spheres. Inhibition of miR-210 in hypoxic spheres attenuated …

Competition is the key to low prices in the pharmaceutical industry. For decades, Americans have benefitted from affordable generic versions of brand-name drugs. But now, we stand poised on the wave of a revolution. Biologics, which include lifesaving, cancer-treating drugs, can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars per year and are forecast to be the “fastest growing segment of drug spending” in coming years. The hope, then, is that just like generic drugs, competition from followon products known as biosimilars will lower prices. But the fear is that they will not. Why? One main reason is disparagement. Biosimilars are nearly …

Purpose Contaminants seldom occur in isolation in the aquatic environment. While pollution of coastal and inland water bodies has received considerable attention to date, there is limited information on potential interactive effects between radionuclides and metals. Whether by accidental or controlled release, such contaminants co-exist in aquatic ecosystems and can pose an enhanced threat to biota. Using a range of biological responses, the study aimed to evaluate relative interactive effects on representative freshwater and marine bivalve species. Methods An integrated, multi-biomarker approach was adopted to investigate response to copper (Cu, 18 μg L−1), a known environmentally relevant genotoxic metal and …

Heat And Mass Transfer Of Mhd Casson Nanofluid Flow Through A Porous Medium Past A Stretching Sheet With Newtonian Heating And Chemical Reaction, Lipika Panigrahi, Jayaprakash Panda, Kharabela Swain, Gouranga Charan Dash

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

An analysis is made to investigate the effect of inclined magnetic field on Casson nanofluid over a stretching sheet embedded in a saturated porous matrix in presence of thermal radiation, non-uniform heat source/sink. The heat equation takes care of energy loss due to viscous dissipation and Joulian dissipation. The mass transfer and heat equation become coupled due to thermophoresis and Brownian motion, two important characteristics of nanofluid flow. The convective terms of momentum, heat and mass transfer equations render the equations non-linear. This present flow model is pressure gradient driven and it is eliminated with the help of potential/ambient flow …

A Fuzzy Assessment Model For Hospitals Services Quality Based On Patient Experience, Mohamed Khodyer Alkafaji, Eman Salih Al-Shamery Oct 2020

A Fuzzy Assessment Model For Hospitals Services Quality Based On Patient Experience, Mohamed Khodyer Alkafaji, Eman Salih Al-Shamery

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The patient's experience is a lens for services assessment that provide from healthcare institutions because the patient is the first and the last recipient for the service. The patient's experience carries a lot of uncertainty and an ultimate decision cannot be taken from the patient about the services, but it carries the partial truth. Many artificial intelligence technologies deal with the concept of partial truth, such as genetic algorithms and neural networks, but the fuzzy logic remains pioneering to deal with uncertainty. This paper aims to develop an assessment model by using fuzzy inference that is able to assess the …

Treatment Of A Worn Mineral Oil Effluent By Electrocoagulation Using Aluminium Electrodes, Serge Raoul Tchamango Dr, God Promess Lactio, Inès Estelle Nkenmogne Kamdem, Martin Benoît Ngassoum

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Water pollution by oils is more and more a preoccupation because of its increasing occurrence and the hazard to human life and environment. Depollution of oily effluents can sometimes generate a secondary pollution (with chemical coagulation / flocculation processes) or be very costly (ultracentrifugation). In this work, electrocoagulation with aluminium electrodes was applied to the treatment of a worn mineral oil effluent. For this to be achieved, the influence of the pH and the current density on the turbidity and organic matter was first investigated. A liquid-liquid extraction was then carried out on the oil samples in order to isolate …

Nutrient Limitation In Freshwater Streams In The South Carolina Piedmont, Rachael Rowe Oct 2020

Nutrient Limitation In Freshwater Streams In The South Carolina Piedmont, Rachael Rowe

S.U.R.E Posters

Availability of nutrients, particularly nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), is a key driver of microbial growth and metabolism in freshwater ecosystems. Microbial biofilms composed of both autotrophs and heterotrophs play crucial roles in freshwater food webs. These stream communities may be limited by N, P, or both N and P. This project examined nutrient limitation of biofilm communities in two small, freshwater streams in the Catawba river basin within the Catawba Nation in South Carolina. Stream conditions were monitored and nutrient concentrations for ambient ammonium and phosphate were monitored. We quantified nutrient limitation, community respiration, gross primary production, and ash-free …

The Effect Of Semaphorin 3a On Chick Embryo Retinal Growth Cones, Allison T. Reed Oct 2020

The Effect Of Semaphorin 3a On Chick Embryo Retinal Growth Cones, Allison T. Reed

S.U.R.E Posters

During embryonic development, axons grow from the retina of the eye to the tectum of the brain which allows for visual information transfer. Axons travel to the tectum via axon pathfinding, which is influenced by axon guidance cues. Axon guidance molecules interact with the growing tips of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon, which are motile structures known as growth cones. Some inhibitory axon guidance molecules are known to cause a growth cone to collapse, where they cease growth and then retract, or turn away. One such inhibitory axon guidance molecule is Semaphorin 3A (Sema 3A). While Sema 3A’s importance is …

Testing The Allelic Strength Of Drosophila Melanogaster Mus109 Alleles, Erica V. Nestore Oct 2020

Testing The Allelic Strength Of Drosophila Melanogaster Mus109 Alleles, Erica V. Nestore

S.U.R.E Posters

Drosophila melanogaster, commonly referred to as fruit flies, possess a group of genes that when mutated can cause sensitivity to DNA damaging agents. These mutagen sensitive (mus) genes are likely involved in DNA repair, and one of these genes, mus109, was the focus of this study. To perform the experiment, complementation crosses were set up between the three mus109 alleles: mus109lS, mus109D1 and mus109D2. The wild-type DGRP-59 was used as the control. For each cross, twenty vials were scored. Brood one contained ten vials that were mock treated with distilled water, and …

Elucidating The Effect Of The Antibiotic Tetracycline On The Regulatory Function Of The Guanidine Sensing Riboswitch Ykkcd, Thomas K. Sullivan

S.U.R.E Posters

The primary objective of this research is to develop an assay – one more feasible for undergraduate institutions than currently available methods – that will enable evaluation of the concomitant binding of, guanidine and tetracycline to the ykkCD bacterial guanidine sensor riboswitch. This noncoding regulatory RNA, in addition to guanidine, also recognizes tetracycline, a translation-inhibiting antibiotic, via a high-affinity aptamer domain. The resulting conformational change by the riboswitch upregulates the expression of genes that are downstream of this regulator, most of which are membrane transporter that expel toxins from bacteria. This phenomenon exemplifies the increasing issue of bacterial antibiotic resistance, …

Using Nucleic Acid-Gold Nanoparticle Conjugate In The Fight Against Bacteria That Are Resistant To Tetracycline Antibiotics, Allen T. Livingston Oct 2020

Using Nucleic Acid-Gold Nanoparticle Conjugate In The Fight Against Bacteria That Are Resistant To Tetracycline Antibiotics, Allen T. Livingston

S.U.R.E Posters

Antibiotic resistance is major problem in modern medicine. Seventy percent of bacterial strains are resistant to at least one antibiotic, making treatment of bacterial infections ever more expensive and difficult. Currently, we are investigating the therapeutic potency of nucleic acid-gold nanoparticle conjugates as treatments against bacteria that are resistant to the antibiotic tetracycline. We hypothesize that by attaching RNA that binds to tetracycline to silver or gold nanoparticles the resulting conjugates will work as a “Trojan-horse” tetracycline-delivery vehicle that smuggles the antibiotic into the cell without being detected by cellular defense systems. Moreover, we reason that silver or gold ions …

Investigating Cytotoxicity And Defense Functions Of Bacteriophage Larva Genes In Host Mycobacterium Smegmatis, Dallas K. Nivens, Laela A. Walker

S.U.R.E Posters

It is estimated that approximately 75% of gene functions within any given phage cluster remain unknown. Two phage traits that can be measured phenotypically were investigated: cytotoxicity, which causes host cell lysis, and superimmunity, which results in protection of the host from infection by similar phages. Five genes (35, 42, 46, 49, and 59), from a subcluster K5 bacteriophage named Larva, were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and assembled into a cloning plasmid (pExTra) using isothermal assembly. Initially, chemical transformation of Escherichia coli with the pExTra + gene insert, enabled amplification of the plasmids. Clonal PCR …

Recellularization Of Porcine Internal Thoracic Arteries As A Tissue Engineered Small-Diameter Vascular Graft Alternative, Carlos E. Escoto-Diaz, Jesse B. Kooistra, Nicholle E. Lewis, Holdyn C. Ferguson

S.U.R.E Posters

Small-diameter vascular grafts are the leading treatment for myocardial infarctions resulting from atherosclerosed coronary vasculature. A potential alternative to using patient-derived grafts is the use of tissue engineered vessels. The removal of native cells from xenogenic vessels allows for recellularization with human cells types; however, the decellularization process depends on the use of cytotoxic reagents that must be removed prior to recellularization. The recellularization process must produce a functional graft that contains the multiple cell types found within arteries. We hypothesized that porcine internal thoracic arteries decellularized using a combination of detergents could be processed to support human endothelial and …
