Suitability Of Native Milkweed (Asclepias) Species Versus Cultivars For Supporting Monarch Butterflies And Bees In Urban Gardens [Research Data], Daniel A. Potter Oct 2020

Suitability Of Native Milkweed (Asclepias) Species Versus Cultivars For Supporting Monarch Butterflies And Bees In Urban Gardens [Research Data], Daniel A. Potter

Entomology Research Data

Public interest in ecological landscaping and gardening is fueling a robust market for native plants. Most plants available to consumers through the horticulture trade are cultivated forms that have been selected for modified flowers or foliage, compactness, or other ornamental characteristics. Depending on their traits, some native plant cultivars seem to support pollinators, specialist insect folivores, and insect-based vertebrate food webs as effectively as native plant species, whereas others do not. There is particular need for information on whether native cultivars can be as effective as true or “wild-type” native species for supporting specialist native insects of conservation concern. Herein …

12 Tips For Implementing Peer Instruction In Medical Education, Dean Parmelee, Mary Jo Trout, Irina Overman, Michael P. Matott

Medical Education Faculty Publications

Peer Instruction (PI) is a vibrant instructional strategy, used successfully for over two decades in undergraduate physics and mathematics courses. It has had limited use and few publications in medical education. This 12 TIPS provides a focused review on the evidence supporting its use in higher education and rationale for its wider adoption in medical education. The authors detail important steps for its implementation with large classes. Based on several years of experience with PI in a US allopathic medical school, they feel that PI attends to core principles from the science of learning and provides students and faculty with …

Optimal Control Of Active Nematics, Michael M. Norton, Piyush Grover, Michael F. Hagan, Seth Fraden Oct 2020

Optimal Control Of Active Nematics, Michael M. Norton, Piyush Grover, Michael F. Hagan, Seth Fraden

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this work we present the first systematic framework to sculpt active nematic systems, using optimal control theory and a hydrodynamic model of active nematics. We demonstrate the use of two different control fields, (i) applied vorticity and (ii) activity strength, to shape the dynamics of an extensile active nematic that is confined to a disk. In the absence of control inputs, the system exhibits two attractors, clockwise and counterclockwise circulating states characterized by two co-rotating topological þ1 2 defects. We specifically seek spatiotemporal inputs that switch the system from one attractor to the other; we also examine phase-shifting perturbations. …

The Effects Of Inquiry-Based Learning And Student Achievement In The Science Classroom, Celeste Elizabeth Wilson Oct 2020

The Effects Of Inquiry-Based Learning And Student Achievement In The Science Classroom, Celeste Elizabeth Wilson

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Research has demonstrated inquiry-based learning (IBL) engages students in the processes of scientific discovery and can make science relevant toward their real-world concerns. However, in most science classrooms, teachers still use traditional learning, or direct methods of instruction for scientific terminology and other types of discrete knowledge students need to master for standardized testing. Existing research and studies have identified the various impacts of inquiry-based learning in the science classroom and its relationship between student achievement, student motivation and long-term knowledge retention.

Research has shown implementation of inquiry-based learning has a positive and direct relationship to student achievement. Planning and …

Cd123 As A Biomarker In Hematolymphoid Malignancies: Principles Of Detection And Targeted Therapies, Hanadi El Achi, Edouard Dupont, Shilpa Paul, Joseph D Khoury

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

CD123, the α chain of the interleukin 3 receptor, is a cytokine receptor that is overexpressed in multiple hematolymphoid neoplasms, including acute myeloid leukemia, blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, hairy cell leukemia, and systemic mastocytosis. Importantly, CD123 expression is upregulated in leukemic stem cells relative to non-neoplastic hematopoietic stem cells, which makes it a useful diagnostic and therapeutic biomarker in hematologic malignancies. Varying levels of evidence have shown that CD123-targeted therapy represents a promising therapeutic approach in several cancers. Tagraxofusp, an anti-CD123 antibody conjugated to a diphtheria toxin, has been approved for use in patients with blastic …

Ghost Factors Of Laboratory Carbonate Chemistry Are Haunting Our Experiments, Aaron W. Galloway, G. Von Dassow, Julie B. Schram, T. Klinger, T. M. Hill, A. T. Lowe, F. Chan, R. M. Yoshioka, K. J. Kroeker

Faculty, Staff, and Students

For many historical and contemporary experimental studies in marine biology, seawater carbonate chemistry remains a ghost factor, an uncontrolled, unmeasured, and often dynamic variable affecting experimental organisms or the treatments to which investigators subject them. We highlight how environmental variability, such as seasonal upwelling and biological respiration, drive variation in seawater carbonate chemistry that can influence laboratory experiments in unintended ways and introduce a signal consistent with ocean acidification. As the impacts of carbonate chemistry on biochemical pathways that underlie growth, development, reproduction, and behavior become better understood, the hidden effects of this previously overlooked variable need to be acknowledged. …

Cole Relaxation Frequency As A Prognostic Parameter For Breast Cancer, William D. Gregory, Shahila Mehboob Christie, John Shell, Georges J. Nahhas, Maharaj Singh, Wendy Mikkelson Oct 2020

Cole Relaxation Frequency As A Prognostic Parameter For Breast Cancer, William D. Gregory, Shahila Mehboob Christie, John Shell, Georges J. Nahhas, Maharaj Singh, Wendy Mikkelson

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

We previously reported successful classification of breast cancer versus benign tissue using the Cole relaxation frequency measured on tissue excised during breast surgery as part of a study at two urban hospitals in the U.S. Midwest. Using that health system’s cancer registry, we have discovered retrospectively that outcomes for patients who participated in the initial study can be classified correctly in 3 well-differentiated categories: nonrecurrent (NR); recurrent with no metastasis (RNM); and recurrent with metastasis (RM). As Cole relaxation frequency increases, the classification moves from NR to RNM and finally to RM. Multivariate analysis showed a significant association of “time-cancer-free” …

Factors Related To Retention And Self-Efficacy Of Special Education Teachers Working With Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Tabuk-Saudi Arabia: Teachers’ Interviews, Abdullah M. Alatawi

Special Education ETDs

Special educators' self-efficacy and retention may be negatively impacted due to many factors related to work conditions and internal factors related to teachers themselves. In this qualitative methodology, I aimed to explore factors that influence teachers of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to stay in their careers and factors affecting their self-efficacy to teach students with autism in Tabuk-Saudi Arabia. This study was based upon Bandura's theoretical construct of self-efficacy and conceptual models of special educators' retention. Six participants: four male and two female special educators participated in semi-structured interviews. After using the qualitative data analysis program Dedoose to …

Long Non-Coding Rna (Lncrna) As A New Biomarker For Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Hcc) Progression And Drug Resistance, Areeb Masood, Sanjaya Satapathy, Manish Tripathi

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary malignant liver tumor that commonly occurs as a progression of chronic liver inflammation due to long-standing viral hepatitis infection, toxins, metabolic conditions, and congenital disorders. In 2018, HCC was the 4th leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, accounting for approximately 780,000 deaths in total.

HCC’s prognosis is directly correlated with early detection. Unfortunately, HCC has an asymptomatic pattern of growth in the early stages of the disease which makes early detection challenging. When HCC progresses to advanced stages, it leaves clinicians with limited therapeutic and curative options, leading to high rates of morbidity and …

Assessing The Effects Of Restorative Practices On Teacher Practices In Elementary Classrooms, Cheng Fisher Oct 2020

Assessing The Effects Of Restorative Practices On Teacher Practices In Elementary Classrooms, Cheng Fisher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Restorative practices have been broadly adopted in American schools. However, few empirical studies have rigorously examined the effects of restorative practices on teacher practices through direct observations. This quasi-experimental designed study tested the hypothesis that restorative practices experience would increase positive interactions between teachers and students. Measurably, it would improve positive teacher practices and positive student behavior. The study analyzed data from a school-randomized evaluation with two rounds of observations in a single school year. Observational data of 140 elementary teachers and their students from nine restorative schools were used to examine the impact of restorative practices on teacher practices …

Neighborhood Conditions, Youth Exposure To Violence, And Substance Use, Ashley Jimenez Oct 2020

Neighborhood Conditions, Youth Exposure To Violence, And Substance Use, Ashley Jimenez

Master of Science in Criminal Justice Theses & (Pre-2016) Policy Research Projects

Vast research has been conducted on exposure to violence and its consequences. Among the many consequences of exposure to violence is substance use. Using the Pathways to Desistance data, this study seeks to examine whether exposure to violence impacts substance use among adolescents, whether neighborhood social disorder impacts substance use, and whether exposure to violence mediates the relationship between neighborhood social disorder and substance use. The test of mediation on these variables has never been conducted before. Findings of these analyses revealed that exposure to violence as a victim and witness were both found to increase the frequency of alcohol …

A Review Of Avian Influenza A Virus Associations In Synanthropic Birds, Susan A. Shriner, J. Jeffrey Root

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Avian influenza A viruses (IAV) have received significant attention due to the threat they pose to human, livestock, and wildlife health. In this review, we focus on what is known about IAV dynamics in less common avian species that may play a role in trafficking IAVs to poultry operations. Specifically, we focus on synanthropic bird species. Synanthropic species, otherwise known as peridomestic, are species that are ecologically associated with humans and anthropogenically modified landscapes, such as agricultural and urban areas. Aquatic birds such as waterfowl and shorebirds are the species most commonly associated with avian IAVs, and are generally considered …

Protease Resistant Growth Factor Formulations For The Healing Of Chronic Wounds, Tabitha Boeringer Oct 2020

Protease Resistant Growth Factor Formulations For The Healing Of Chronic Wounds, Tabitha Boeringer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Chronic wounds are those wounds which are refractory to treatment, often taking years to heal. These wounds are complex and may present with elevated protease levels, resulting in rapid degradation of growth factors, both native and augmented via treatment. This study’s focus was the development of a system to protect growth factors from protease mediated degradation.

The protective system consisted of chimeric fusion proteins developed to contain both a growth factor or known protease inhibitory peptide and an Elastin-Like-Peptide (ELP)component. The unique phase transitioning abilities of the ELP component allowed for the self-assembly of these chimeric fusion proteins into a …

Eutrophication is a widespread environmental change that usually reduces the stabilizing effect of plant diversity on productivity in local communities. Whether this effect is scale dependent remains to be elucidated. Here, we determine the relationship between plant diversity and temporal stability of productivity for 243 plant communities from 42 grasslands across the globe and quantify the effect of chronic fertilization on these relationships. Unfertilized local communities with more plant species exhibit greater asynchronous dynamics among species in response to natural environmental fluctuations, resulting in greater local stability (alpha stability). Moreover, neighborhood communities that have greater spatial variation in plant species …
