We Need Fuzzy Techniques To Design Successful Human-Like Robots, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Laxman Bokati

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In this chapter, we argue that to make sure that human-like robots exhibit human-like behavior, we need to use fuzzy techniques -- and we also provide details of this usage. The chapter is intended both for researchers and practitioners who are very familiar with fuzzy techniques and also for researchers and practitioners who do not know these techniques -- but who are interested in designing human-like robots.

Characterizations Of Sars-Cov-2 Mutational Profile, Spike Protein Stability And Viral Transmission, Sayantan Laha, Joyeeta Chakraborty, Shantanab Das, Soumen Kanti Manna, Sampa Biswas, Raghunath Chatterjee

Journal Articles

The recent pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 infection has affected more than 3.0 million people worldwide with more than 200 thousand reported deaths. The SARS-CoV-2 genome has the capability of gaining rapid mutations as the virus spreads. Whole-genome sequencing data offers a wide range of opportunities to study mutation dynamics. The advantage of an increasing amount of whole-genome sequence data of SARS-CoV-2 intrigued us to explore the mutation profile across the genome, to check the genome diversity, and to investigate the implications of those mutations in protein stability and viral transmission. We have identified frequently mutated residues by aligning ~660 SARS-CoV-2 genomes …

Shoot Extracts From Two Low Nodulation Mutants Significantly Reduce Nodule Number In Pea, Christian A. Huynh, Frédérique Guinel Nov 2020

Shoot Extracts From Two Low Nodulation Mutants Significantly Reduce Nodule Number In Pea, Christian A. Huynh, Frédérique Guinel

Biology Faculty Publications

E107 and E132 are pea mutants that nodulate poorly. Because they have a shoot-controlled nodulation phenotype, we asked if their mutated genes were implicated in the autoregulation of nodulation (AON), a mechanism which consists of two systemic circuits, the positive CEP/CRA2 and the negative CLE/SUNN, coordinated via NIN and miR2111. We further characterized the mutants’ phenotype by studying nodule distribution and nodulation efficiency. E107 was similar to wild-type (WT) in its nodule distribution, but E132 had an extended nodulation zone with nodules forming distally on its lateral roots. Moreover, we tested whether their shoots produced a compound inhibitory to nodulation. …

Struggle And Martyrdom: Abusive Power And Root Narrative In The Aftermath Of The Eritrean Revolution, Solon Simmons Nov 2020

Struggle And Martyrdom: Abusive Power And Root Narrative In The Aftermath Of The Eritrean Revolution, Solon Simmons

Peace and Conflict Studies

In this paper I have applied root narrative theory to the case of conflict in Eritrea, a small African country along the Red Sea that has been embroiled in conflict with its neighbors and the international community on and off since at least 1961. Examining a small sample of representative texts from the government of Eritrea and from international critics of the regime, I demonstrate that these parties—different moral languages that make it almost impossible for each side to see the point of view of the other. Using the semiotic structure of the story system implied by root narrative theory …

Faculty Research 2020

The Cdc2-like kinases (CLKs) regulate RNA splicing and have been shown to suppress cell growth. Knockdown of CLK2 was found to block glioma stem-like cell (GSC) growth in vivo through the AKT/FOXO3a/p27 pathway without activating mTOR and MAPK signaling, suggesting that these pathways mediate resistance to CLK2 inhibition. We identified CLK2 binding partners using immunoprecipitation assays and confirmed their interactions in vitro in GSCs. We then tested the cellular viability of several signaling inhibitors in parental and CLK2 knockdown GSCs. Our results demonstrate that CLK2 binds to 14-3-3τ isoform and prevents its ubiquitination in GSCs. Stable CLK2 knockdown increased PP2A …

Paternal Presence As A Protective Factor For A Black Daughter's Teen Births, Marquitta Dorsey Nov 2020

Paternal Presence As A Protective Factor For A Black Daughter's Teen Births, Marquitta Dorsey

Journal of Family Strengths

Associations between father presence in the home and delayed adolescent sexual activity is well established among middle-class populations. However, considering the prevalence of nonresident fathers among Black households, it is necessary to explore whether such associations extend to early adolescent births for Black adolescent females, and whether mother’s timing of sexual debut and level of education confirm previous findings and predict early teen birth outcomes among Black females, who disproportionately represent the second highest teen birth rate (Hamilton, Rossen & Branum, 2016). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges researchers to explore within group differences among groups of adolescent …

Lysenin Channels As Sensors For Ions And Molecules, Andrew Bogard, Gamid Abatchev, Zoe Hutchinson, Jason Ward, Pangaea W. Finn, Fulton Mckinney, Daniel Fologea

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lysenin is a pore-forming protein extracted from the earthworm Eisenia fetida, which inserts large conductance pores in artificial and natural lipid membranes containing sphingomyelin. Its cytolytic and hemolytic activity is rather indicative of a pore-forming toxin; however, lysenin channels present intricate regulatory features manifested as a reduction in conductance upon exposure to multivalent ions. Lysenin pores also present a large unobstructed channel, which enables the translocation of analytes, such as short DNA and peptide molecules, driven by electrochemical gradients. These important features of lysenin channels provide opportunities for using them as sensors for a large variety of applications. In …

Are Community Banks A Driver Of New Business Formation? Empirical Evidence From The United States From 2005 To 2015, Christopher Dodd Nov 2020

Are Community Banks A Driver Of New Business Formation? Empirical Evidence From The United States From 2005 To 2015, Christopher Dodd

Honors Projects in Economics

The number of small banks in the U.S. has dropped drastically since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation [FDIC], 2018). Small businesses, which are essential to a well-functioning economy, often rely on banks as a source of financial capital. This study helps explain if the number of community banks in a state impacts new business formation and whether financial regulation passed following the GFC, specifically the DoddFrank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010, moderates the significance of the relationship. This thesis contributes to the literature in a few major ways. First, it provides a …

Airborne Radiometry For Calibration, Validation, And Research In Oceanic, Coastal, And Inland Waters, Liane S. Guild, Raphael M. Kudela, Stanford B. Hooker, Sherry L. Palacios, Henry F. Houskeeper

Marine Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Present-day ocean color satellite sensors, which principally provide reliable data on chlorophyll, sediments, and colored dissolved organic material in the open ocean, are not well suited for coastal and inland water studies for a variety of reasons, including coarse spatial and spectral resolution plus challenges with atmospheric correction. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) airborne mission concepts tested in 2011, 2013, 2017, and 2018 over Monterey Bay, CA, and nearby inland waters have demonstrated the feasibility of improving airborne monitoring and research activities in case-1 and case-2 aquatic ecosystems through the combined use of state-of-the-art above- and in-water measurement capabilities. …

Children's sensitivity to regularities within the linguistic stream, such as the likelihood that syllables co-occur, is foundational to speech segmentation and language acquisition. Yet, little is known about the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying speech segmentation in typical development and in neurodevelopmental disorders that impact language acquisition such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here, we investigate the neural signals of statistical learning in 15 human participants (children ages 8-12) with a clinical diagnosis of ASD and 14 age-matched and gender-matched typically developing peers. We tracked the evoked neural responses to syllable sequences in a naturalistic statistical learning corpus using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in …

Cloning And Sequencing Of Five Lea2 Genes From Date Palm Cv. Khalas And Functional Characterization To Heat And Salt Stress Tolerance Using Yeast Knockout Mutants, Mughair Abdul Aziz

Agribusiness Theses

Genomic assets from the plants innate to abiotic stress environments have the prospective to be latent in generating stress tolerant plants. Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are decisive phytomolecules, which accumulates mainly in the late stages of seed development and in the vegetative tissues during exogenous stresses as a reaction to stabilize the damaged macromolecules. In spite of substantial research, their mechanism of action to initiate plant tolerance against abiotic stresses remains enigmatic. Here, the study is a preliminary investigation on LEA2 genes from the P. dactylifera cv. khalas, a relatively tolerant plant of arid regions. In this aspect, the …

"In recent years, innovation, entrepreneurship, and globalization have become popular concepts in relation to technology design. While some major corporations and other entities continue pushing for globalization through the design and dissemination of digital technologies, researchers also caution against the biases and oppression that can be embedded in US culture’s 'near-ubiquitous use of algorithmically driven software.'1 Countering some previously established orientations to globalization and entrepreneurship, this chapter highlights the importance of building technological innovation with (rather than just for or about) historically, structurally, and systematically marginalized and underrepresented communities. The overall purpose of this chapter is to showcase how …

Novel Small Rnas Expressed By Bartonella Bacilliformis Under Multiple Conditions Reveal Potential Mechanisms For Persistence In The Sand Fly Vector And Human Host, Shaun Wachter, Linda D. Hicks, Rahul Raghavan, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Bartonella bacilliformis, the etiological agent of Carrión's disease, is a Gram-negative, facultative intracellular alphaproteobacterium. Carrión's disease is an emerging but neglected tropical illness endemic to Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador. B. bacilliformis is spread between humans through the bite of female phlebotomine sand flies. As a result, the pathogen encounters significant and repeated environmental shifts during its life cycle, including changes in pH and temperature. In most bacteria, small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) serve as effectors that may post-transcriptionally regulate the stress response to such changes. However, sRNAs have not been characterized in B. bacilliformis, to date. We therefore performed total RNA-sequencing …

Hurricanes impact forests by damaging trees and altering multiple ecosystem functions. As such, predicting which individuals are likely to be most affected has crucial economic importance as well as conservation value. Tree stem-inhabiting fungal communities, notably rot-causing agents, have been mentioned as a potential factor of tree predisposition to hurricane damage, but this assumption remains poorly explored. To examine this relationship, we sampled the stem wood of intact and damaged trees shortly after Hurricane Maria in a Puerto Rican dry tropical forest in 2017. We categorized samples depending on two types: trees with intact stems and trees in which stems …

Objective: MicroRNAs act locally and systemically to impact osteoarthritis (OA) pathophysiology, but comprehensive profiling of the circulating miRNome in early vs late stages of OA has yet to be conducted. Sequencing has emerged as the preferred method for microRNA profiling since it offers high sensitivity and specificity. Our objective was to sequence the miRNome in plasma from 91 patients with early [Kellgren–Lawrence (KL) grade 0 or 1 (n = 41)] or late [KL grade 3 or 4 (n = 50)] symptomatic radiographic knee OA to identify unique microRNA signatures in each disease state. Design: MicroRNA libraries were prepared using the …

Little is known about the effects of NPC1 deficiency in brain development and whether these effects contribute to neurodegeneration in Niemann–Pick disease type C (NPC). Degeneration of cerebellar Purkinje cells occurs at an earlier stage and to a greater extent in NPC; therefore, we analyzed the effect of NPC1 deficiency on microglia and on climbing fiber synaptic refinement during cerebellar postnatal development using the Npc1ⁿᵐᶠ¹⁶⁴ mouse. Our analysis revealed that NPC1 deficiency leads to early phenotypic changes in microglia that are not associated with an innate immune response. However, the lack of NPC1 in Npc1ⁿᵐᶠ¹⁶⁴ mice significantly affected the early …

Psychological Stress, Its Reduction, And Long-Term Consequences: What Studies With Laboratory Animals Might Teach Us About Life In The Dog Shelter, Michael B. Hennessy, Regina M. Willen, Patricia A. Schiml

Psychology Faculty Publications

There is a long history of laboratory studies of the physiological and behavioral effects of stress, its reduction, and the later psychological and behavioral consequences of unmitigated stress responses. Many of the stressors employed in these studies approximate the experience of dogs confined in an animal shelter. We review how the laboratory literature has guided our own work in describing the reactions of dogs to shelter housing and in helping formulate means of reducing their stress responses. Consistent with the social buffering literature in other species, human interaction has emerged as a key ingredient in moderating glucocorticoid stress responses of …

Fused Deposition Modeling Of Perovskite Solar Cell Active Layer With Integrated Thermal Management, Tyler Sonsalla

Doctoral Dissertations

Fossil fuel usage has been our primary form of energy used to fabricate and give us many of the products and services that we use today. However, our fossil fuel usage has led to an increase in the release of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases affect the global surface temperatures of our planet, which can reduce our ability to produce crops, lead to stronger and more frequent natural disasters, and change the acidity of our oceans. To combat this problem, new energy harvesting techniques and technologies are required to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

One solution to reducing our reliance …
