Deficiency Of Splicing Factor 1 (Sf1) Reduces Intestinal Polyp Incidence In ApcMin/+ Mice, Jyotsna D. Godavarthi, Shahrazad Polk, Lisa Nunez, Amruthesh Shivachar, Nancy L. Glenn Griesinger, Angabin Matin

Faculty Publications

Background: Splicing factor 1 (SF1) is a conserved alternative splicing factor expressed in many different mammalian cell types. The genetically modified Sf1+/− (or Sf1β-geo/+ ) mice express reduced levels of SF1 protein in mouse tissues, including in cells of the intestines. Mutational inactivation of human adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene deregulates the Wnt signaling pathway and is a frequent genetic event in colon cancers. Mice with a point mutation in the Apc gene (ApcMin/+ ) also develop numerous intestinal polyps at a young age. Our aim was to determine the effect of reduced SF1 levels on polyp development due to …

Genetic mutations and aberrant epigenetic alterations are the triggers for carcinogenesis. The emergence of the drugs targeting epigenetic aberrations has provided a better outlook for cancer treatment. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are epigenetic modifiers playing critical roles in numerous key biological functions. Inappropriate expression of HDACs and dysregulation of PI3K signaling pathway are common aberrations observed in human diseases, particularly in cancers. Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) are a class of epigenetic small-molecular therapeutics exhibiting promising applications in the treatment of hematological and solid malignancies, and in non-neoplastic diseases. Although HDACIs as single agents exhibit synergy by inhibiting HDAC and the PI3K …

Single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNAseq) technologies are rapidly evolving. Although very informative, in standard scRNAseq experiments, the spatial organization of the cells in the tissue of origin is lost. Conversely, spatial RNA-seq technologies designed to maintain cell localization have limited throughput and gene coverage. Mapping scRNAseq to genes with spatial information increases coverage while providing spatial location. However, methods to perform such mapping have not yet been benchmarked. To fill this gap, we organized the DREAM Single-Cell Transcriptomics challenge focused on the spatial reconstruction of cells from the Drosophila embryo from scRNAseq data, leveraging as silver standard, genes with in situ hybridization …

Inoculation And Amendment Strategies Influence Switchgrass Establishment In Degraded Soil, Ekundayo Adeleke, Kudjo E. Dzantor, Ali Taheri

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Bioenergy feedstock production on degraded land can serve as a means for modulating land competition for food versus energy. Due to little or no agricultural value of degraded soil, fortification of the soil with an organic amendment or inoculum will improve biomass productivity. However, as farmers struggle to rejuvenate their degraded land, there is a need for a quick screening strategy to select the best method of enhancing cellulosic (switchgrass, SG) biomass production in degraded soil. The goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of soil amendment and inoculation strategies on biomass productivities of SG in a reclaimed …

The recent pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 infection has affected more than 3.0 million people worldwide with more than 200 thousand reported deaths. The SARS-CoV-2 genome has the capability of gaining rapid mutations as the virus spreads. Whole-genome sequencing data offers a wide range of opportunities to study mutation dynamics. The advantage of an increasing amount of whole-genome sequence data of SARS-CoV-2 intrigued us to explore the mutation profile across the genome, to check the genome diversity, and to investigate the implications of those mutations in protein stability and viral transmission. We have identified frequently mutated residues by aligning ~660 SARS-CoV-2 genomes …

Laboratory Results And Mathematical Modeling Of Spore Surface Interactions In Stormwater Runoff, Anne M. Mikelonis, Katherine Ratliff, Sungmin Youn

All Engineering Faculty Research

Development of numerical models to predict stormwater-mediated transport of pathogenic spores in the environment depends on an understanding of adhesion forces that dictate detachment after rain events. Zeta potential values were measured in the laboratory for Bacillus globigii and Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki, two common surrogates used to represent Bacillus anthracis, in synthetic baseline ultrapure water and laboratory prepared stormwater. Zeta potential curves were also determined for materials representative of urban infrastructure (concrete and asphalt). These data were used to predict the interaction energy between the spores and urban materials using Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) modeling. B. globigii and B. thuringiensis kurstaki …

© 2020 The Authors. Ecology and Evolution published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd Structure of natural communities is shaped by both abiotic characteristics and the ongoing processes of community assembly. Important to this process are the habitat selection behaviors and subsequent survival of colonists, both in the context of temporal changes in the abiotic characteristics and priority effects driven by earlier colonists. Aquatic beetles are prevalent in temporary freshwater systems, form speciose assemblages, and are often early colonists of temporary ponds. While beetles have the potential to influence community structure through post-colonization interactions (predation and competition), our goal was …

KDM5B (lysine[K]-specific demethylase 5B) is frequently upregulated in various human cancers including prostate cancer. KDM5B controls H3K4me3/2 levels and regulates gene transcription and cell differentiation, yet the contributions of KDM5B to prostate cancer tumorigenesis remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the functional role of KDM5B in epigenetic dysregulation and prostate cancer progression in cultured cells and in mouse models of prostate epithelium–specific mutant Pten/Kdm5b. Kdm5b deficiency resulted in a significant delay in the onset of prostate cancer in Pten-null mice, whereas Kdm5b loss alone caused no morphologic abnormalities in mouse prostates. At 6 months of age, the prostate weight …

The Context And Enactment Of Faith-Based Social Entrepreneurship, Bruce R. Borquist Nov 2020

The Context And Enactment Of Faith-Based Social Entrepreneurship, Bruce R. Borquist

Business as Mission Theses and Dissertations

Faith-based organisations have been at the forefront of efforts to meet human need and effect positive social change for centuries, and they continue to make significant contributions to social welfare. However, a paucity of empirical research into the nature of faith-based social entrepreneurship limits knowledge and theory development and hinders the effectiveness of faith-based initiatives. In response, this thesis explores how a religious worldview intersects with values, gender and institutional logics to influence social entrepreneurial activity. The thesis thereby aims to develop new theoretical insights into the contextual embeddedness of the process of social entrepreneurship.

A Mathematical Model Of Risk Factors In Hiv/Aids Transmission Dynamics: Observational Study Of Female Sexual Network In India, S. Saravanakumar, A. Eswari, L. Rajendran, Marwan Abukhaled

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, a mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of HIV/AIDS epidemic with emphasis on the role of female sex workers is considered. The model is a system of nine nonlinear differential equations that represent nine different groups of an HIV population. A modified approach of the homotopy perturbation method is used to derive an approximate analytical expression for each of the nine different groups that form HIV population. The analytical results are shown to be consistent with the numerical results obtained by the highly accurate fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The analytical solution will simplify studying the effect of each …

Propagation Of Rayleigh Waves In Layered Elastic Half-Space With Finite Sliding Contact, Navjot Kaur Nov 2020

Propagation Of Rayleigh Waves In Layered Elastic Half-Space With Finite Sliding Contact, Navjot Kaur

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The propagation of Rayleigh waves in an orthotropic elastic half-space underlying an orthotropic elastic layer is analysed. The layer and the half-space are considered in finite sliding contact, for which a parameter ξ,(0 ≤ ξ ≤ 1) has been introduced to represent the sliding contact interfaces. The extreme values of ξ correspond to smooth and perfect contact interface, respectively. It was found that the general dispersion equation exhibiting finite sliding contact between the layer and the half-space depends on the sliding parameter. Frequency equations derived by Vinh et al. [1] and Vinh and Anh [2] have been recovered as particular …

A Hybrid Nash Min-Max Approach For Solving Continuous Static Games, Yousria A. Elnaga, Abdullah S. Shalaby, Ali S. Shehab Nov 2020

A Hybrid Nash Min-Max Approach For Solving Continuous Static Games, Yousria A. Elnaga, Abdullah S. Shalaby, Ali S. Shehab

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper addresses a novel structure of continuous static games (CSGs) called hybrid continuous static games (HCSG). These types of games are based on the fact that the game is presented as a hybrid game between multiple players playing independently using Nash equilibrium solutions (NES) and others playing according to a secure concept using Min-Max solutions (MMS). A Nash Min-Max approach was established to solve such genre games. Also, an algorithm for solving Nash Min-Max hybrid continuous static games (NMMHCSG) has been outlined in clear steps. Moreover, a realistic application of four firms selling replaceable products and seeking to maximize …

Compensator Design For Non-Autonomous Linear Control Systems, Sutrima Sutrima, Christiana Rini Indrati, Lina Aryati

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper contributes to a design of stabilizing compensators for the stabilizable systems in the class. A strongly continuous quasi semigroup approach is implemented as a generalization of a strongly continuous semigroup for autonomous systems. Stability of the non-autonomous linear control system is identified by a uniformly exponential stability of a strongly continuous quasi semigroup on the state space. The results showed that in the infinite-dimensional state space, if the closed-loop non-autonomous linear control system was stabilizable and detectable, there existed an infinite-dimensional stabilizing compensators for the system. The assigned controller is given by u = Fxˆ where xˆ is …

An Efficient Three-Level Explicit Time-Split Approach For Solving Two-Dimensional Heat Conduction Equation, Eric Ngondiep Nov 2020

An Efficient Three-Level Explicit Time-Split Approach For Solving Two-Dimensional Heat Conduction Equation, Eric Ngondiep

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The present paper considers an efficient time-split approach (i.e. a three-level explicit time-split MacCormack scheme) for solving two-dimensional heat conduction equations. Computational cost reduces the two-level explicit MacCormack and splitting. Both stability and convergence of the method are deeply analyzed in L∞(0,T;L2)-norm under a suitable time step restriction. Numerical experiments suggest that the new algorithm is fast, second order accurate in time and fourth order convergent in space. This shows effectiveness of the numerical scheme and improves some well-known results in literature.

Modeling Of Tumor-Immune Competitive System With Saturated Incidence, M. Rajalakshmi, Mini Ghosh Nov 2020

Modeling Of Tumor-Immune Competitive System With Saturated Incidence, M. Rajalakshmi, Mini Ghosh

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, a non-linear mathematical model for tumor-immune system is formulated and analyzed by considering saturated incidence for the interaction between tumor cells and cytotoxic-T lymphocytes (CTLs). It is assumed that both the tumor cells as well as T-helper cells follow logistic growth. In Addition, a time lag exists in the activation of CTLs because of T-helper cells. Existence and stability of different equilibria of the model are discussed in detail. The model is analyzed using the theory of delay differential equations. It was observed that delay played an important role in defining the dynamics of the system. The …

On The Stability Analysis And Solutions Of Fractional Order Pine Wilt Disease Model, A. M. A. El-Sayed, S. Z. Rida, Y. A. Gaber

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we present the fractional order model (FOM) for the spread of the PWD. We show that this model possesses non-negative solutions as desired in any population dynamics. We compute the basic reproduction number R0 and illustrate the equilibrium points (EPs) as well as their stability of this model. We apply The Natural-Adomian decomposition method (N-ADM) and fractional Euler method (FEM) to solve this model. The results are compared with those obtained by classical Rung-Kutta (RK4) method in the case of integer order.

Modified Split-Step Theta Milstein Methods For M-Dimensional Stochastic Differential Equation With Respect To Poisson-Driven Jump, Mahmoud A. Eissa, Fenglin Tian, Boping Tian

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Recently, split-step techniques have been integrated with a Milstein scheme to improve the fundamental analysis of numerical solutions of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). Unfortunately, we note that stability conditions of these methods have restrictions on parameters and step-size to preserve mean-square stability and A-stability of SDEs. We construct new general modified spit-step theta Milstein (MSSTM) methods for using on multi-dimensional SDEs in order to overcome these restrictions. We investigate that the numerical methods are mean-square (MS) stable with no restrictions on parameters for all step-size h > 0 when θ ∈ [1/2, 1] and it is proved that the methods with …

Examining The Relationship Between All-Female Education And Work Outcomes, Angelica Provost

Honors Projects in Management

This thesis is aimed at studying the long-term impact an all-female secondary education has on work outcomes. Most of the current research on an all-female education pertains to current secondary students or those who are in college. There are minimal studies that analyze if one’s educational environment has a long-term influence on their career. This study hypothesized that an all-female secondary education has a long-term impact on job satisfaction, job performance, and job engagement. This impact is manifested through the Big 5 personality traits of conscientiousness and extraversion, as well as the multifaceted personality trait Core Self Evaluation (CSE). While …
