Seasonal Forecast Based Preharvest Hedging, Eric D. Hunt, Cory Walters, Toni Klemm, Iyore Eronmwon Nov 2020

Seasonal Forecast Based Preharvest Hedging, Eric D. Hunt, Cory Walters, Toni Klemm, Iyore Eronmwon

Cornhusker Economics

Given the immense effect of weather on agriculture, skillful weather forecasts are of importance to agricultural producers for effective decision making. Weather forecasts affect operational decisions such as whether or not to irrigate (where applicable), when to apply fertilizer, when to spray herbicide and pesticide, and certainly the timing of planting and harvesting. At the seasonal time scale, say in the spring, just before planting, weather forecasts may be used for strategic decision making on outcomes, say from preharvest hedging (hereafter referred to hedging), that will not be realized until the fall or harvest. Historically, the lack of skill in …

Chicoreus Brunneus Seashells As A Catalyst In Rice Bran Biodiesel Production, Hoora Mazaheri Nov 2020

Chicoreus Brunneus Seashells As A Catalyst In Rice Bran Biodiesel Production, Hoora Mazaheri

Student Works (2020-2029)

Environmental pollution and the declining global supply of accessible fossil fuels are the key drivers to search for alternative energy sources. This study focused on developing a “green” and sustainable heterogenous calcium oxide (CaO) catalyst from Chicoreus Brunneus shells for biodiesel production from rice bran oil (RBO). Coastal people frequently collect these shells for food and shell crafts. Thus, by using seashell wastes, cost-efficient catalysts can be achieved for the biodiesel industry. The shells were calcinated, washed and dried to produce pure CaO catalyst. After that, CaO was converted into calcium methoxide (Ca(OCH3)2) and followed by loading onto zeolite support …

Trophic Cascades Alter Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics And Body Size Evolution, Thomas M. Luhring, John Delong Nov 2020

Trophic Cascades Alter Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics And Body Size Evolution, Thomas M. Luhring, John Delong

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Trait evolution in predator–prey systems can feed back to the dynamics of interacting species as well as cascade to impact the dynamics of indirectly linked species (eco-evolutionary trophic cascades; EETCs). A key mediator of trophic cascades is body mass, as it both strongly influences and evolves in response to predator–prey interactions. Here, we use Gillespie ecoevolutionary models to explore EETCs resulting from top predator loss and mediated by body mass evolution. Our four-trophic-level food chain model uses allometric scaling to link body mass to different functions (ecological pleiotropy) and is realistically parameterized from the FORAGE database to mimic the parameter …

Aspergillosis In An Augmented Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) Population In Central Utah: A Case Report, Melissa S. Chelak, Avery A. Cook, David D. Frame, Terry A. Messmer

Western North American Naturalist

We present the first known case of aspergillosis found in a wild, augmented Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) population. This case was not directly associated with the sage-grouse translocations and is the first documented in wild sage-grouse populations since the mid-1900s. Aspergillosis is a fungal infection of the lungs caused by an inoculation of Aspergillus spp. spores. Wild birds that are infected by the pathogen’s spores die from the resulting infection. We hypothesize that the Aspergillus spp. spores were propagated either in mesic nesting conditions or in residual damp mulch piles created from sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) habitat restoration …

The Role Of Microbiologic Agents In The Progression Of The Atherosclerosis: A Comprehensive Review, Ahmet Karabulut

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of disability, morbidity and mortality in the world. Atherosclerosis is accepted as a chronic progressive inflammatory disease. The inflammatory cascade in the vascular wall is well-defined. However, the predictors and contributors of the inflammatory response in atherosclerosis are not completely understood. Systemic and local inflammation, which enhance the burden of inflammation in the vascular wall, have been proposed as risk factors for the progression of atherosclerosis. Infectious micro-organisms are one of the major triggering factors for local and systemic inflammation. In this review, we aimed to emphasize the linkage between micro-organisms and the progression of …
