White Matter Plasticity In Anxiety: Disruption Of Neural Network Synchronization During Threat-Safety Discrimination, Jia Liu, Ekaterina Likhti, A. Duke Shereen, Tracy A. Dennis-Tiwary, Patricia Casaccia

Advanced Science Research Center

Recent evidence highlighted the importance of white matter tracts in typical and atypical behaviors. White matter dynamically changes in response to learning, stress, and social experiences. Several lines of evidence have reported white matter dysfunction in psychiatric conditions, including depression, stress- and anxiety-related disorders. The mechanistic underpinnings of these associations, however, remain poorly understood. Here, we outline an integrative perspective positing a link between aberrant myelin plasticity and anxiety. Drawing on extant literature and emerging new findings, we suggest that in anxiety, unique changes may occur in response to threat and to safety learning and the ability to discriminate between …

Increasing Our Ability To Predict Contemporary Evolution, Patrik Nosil, Samuel M. Flaxman, Jeffrey L. Feder, Zachariah Gompert

Biology Faculty Publications

Classic debates concerning the extent to which scientists can predict evolution have gained new urgency as environmental changes force species to adapt or risk extinction. We highlight how our ability to predict evolution can be constrained by data limitations that cause poor understanding of deterministic natural selection. We then emphasize how such data limits can be reduced with feasible empirical effort involving a combination of approaches.

Tobacco Hornworm (Manduca Sexta) Oral Secretion Elicits Reactive Oxygen Species In Isolated Tomato Protoplasts, Akanksha Gandhi, Rupesh R. Kariyat, Cruz Chappa, Mandeep Tayal, Nirakar Sahoo Nov 2020

Tobacco Hornworm (Manduca Sexta) Oral Secretion Elicits Reactive Oxygen Species In Isolated Tomato Protoplasts, Akanksha Gandhi, Rupesh R. Kariyat, Cruz Chappa, Mandeep Tayal, Nirakar Sahoo

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Plants are under constant attack by a suite of insect herbivores. Over millions of years of coexistence, plants have evolved the ability to sense insect feeding via herbivore-associated elicitors in oral secretions, which can mobilize defense responses. However, herbivore-associated elicitors and the intrinsic downstream modulator of such interactions remain less understood. In this study, we show that tobacco hornworm caterpillar (Manduca sexta) oral secretion (OS) induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) protoplasts. By using a dye-based ROS imaging approach, our study shows that application of plant-fed (PF) M. sexta OS generates significantly higher ROS while artificial diet-fed …

Fabrication and optimization of conductive scaffolds capable of inducing proper intercellular connections through electrical signals is critical for neural tissue engineering. In this research, electrospun conductive PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol)/PEDOT(poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)) scaffolds were fabricated in different compositions. Conductivity of electrospinning solutions and electrospun scaffolds were measured. Morphology and topography, mechanical properties and water contact angle of scaffolds were analyzed. Chemistry of scaffolds were studied using FTIR analysis, while biocompatibility and cellular interactions with scaffolds were tested using MTT assay and cellular attachment and spreading testing. Our results show improvements in PEDOT-containing scaffolds, in terms of physiochemical properties, and cell viability compared to …

Although TP53 is the most commonly mutated gene in human cancers, the p53-dependent transcriptional programs mediating tumor suppression remain incompletely understood. Here, to uncover critical components downstream of p53 in tumor suppression, we perform unbiased RNAi and CRISPR-Cas9-based genetic screens in vivo. These screens converge upon the p53-inducible gene Zmat3, encoding an RNA-binding protein, and we demonstrate that ZMAT3 is an important tumor suppressor downstream of p53 in mouse Kras

The morphologies of craters on planetary surfaces reveal clues about the geologic mechanisms by which they originate and subsequently evolve, as well as the materials and physical variables inherent to the environment in which they formed. We carried out a quantitative multivariate analysis of shape descriptors derived from the outlines of craters formed by volcanic processes on Mars, Io, and Earth and by impact cratering on the Moon using elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA) and the Zahn-Roskies (Z-R) shape function. Canonical variate analysis (CVA) was used to construct a statistical model of differences between the crater groups to classify …

The focus of study is to examine the impact that The Orange County Teacher Pathway Partnership (OC-TPP) at CSU Fullerton has had on participants’ (community college transfer students) skills and experiences gained in each of the program years from years 2015-2018. Students who participated in the STEM Institute gained pre-professional skills and teaching experience through various activities in the program. Students remained on the teacher pathway because the program allowed them to break out of their comfort zones, build social connections, and adjust to various groups of people. Attending the program increased college student confidence in content knowledge and content-based …

Non-coding mutations can create splice sites, however the true extent of how such somatic non-coding mutations affect RNA splicing are largely unexplored. Here we use the MiSplice pipeline to analyze 783 cancer cases with WGS data and 9494 cases with WES data, discovering 562 non-coding mutations that lead to splicing alterations. Notably, most of these mutations create new exons. Introns associated with new exon creation are significantly larger than the genome-wide average intron size. We find that some mutation-induced splicing alterations are located in genes important in tumorigenesis (ATRX, BCOR, CDKN2B, MAP3K1, MAP3K4, MDM2, SMAD4, STK11, TP53 etc.), often leading …

Potential Effect Of Bio-Surfactants On Sea Spray Generation In Tropical Cyclone Conditions, Breanna L. Vanderplow, Alexander Soloviev, Cayla W. Dean, Brian K. Haus, Roger Lukas, Muhammad Sami, Isaac Ginis

Despite significant improvement in computational and observational capabilities, predicting intensity and intensification of major tropical cyclones remains a challenge. In 2017 Hurricane Maria intensified to a Category 5 storm within 24 h, devastating Puerto Rico. In 2019 Hurricane Dorian, predicted to remain tropical storm, unexpectedly intensified into a Category 5 storm and destroyed the Bahamas. The official forecast and computer models were unable to predict rapid intensification of these storms. One possible reason for this is that key physics, including microscale processes at the air-sea interface, are poorly understood and parameterized in existing forecast models. Here we show that surfactants …
