Effect Of Osteopontin Gene Variants On Milk Production Traits In Holstein Friesiancrossbred Cattle Of Kerala, Francis Anand Lali, Kulangara Anilkumar, Thazhathuveetil Aravindakshan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Osteopontin gene (OPN) is located in the quantitative trait loci (QTL) for milk production traits in bovine chromosome 6. In the present study the impact of cytosine to thymine transition in the intron-4 of OPN gene (g.8514C > T) on milk production traits was analysed in the Holstein Friesian crossbred cattle of Kerala. Genomic DNA was isolated and a fragment of 290 bp enclosing the polymorphic site was amplified and genotyped by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) using endonuclease, BSeN1. The genetic variants were distributed according to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The T allele was found to be the major one (T/0.76, C/0.24) …

In this study, bacterial diversity in beehives was investigated to determine the potential of pathogenic bacteria in honeybees. To do this, bacterial isolations were carried out from dead and diseased adult bees collected from 9 districts in Ordu Province in Turkey.Twenty species of pathogenic bacteria, 18 of which were nonsporeforming Staphylococcus lentus, Klebsiella oxytoca, Citrobacter freundii, Leucanostoc mesenteroides ssp. cremoris, Kocuria rosea, Kocuria kristinae, Sphingomonas paucimobilis slashline, Burkholderia cepacia, Leucanostoc mesenteroides ssp. dextranicum,Hafnia alvei, Escherichia coli, Aeromonas salmonicida, Citrobacter braakii, Pantoea agglomerans, …
The Trans Panic Defense Revisited, Cynthia Lee
The Trans Panic Defense Revisited, Cynthia Lee
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Violence against transgender individuals in general, and trans women of color in particular, is a significant problem today. When a man is charged with murdering a transgender woman, a common defense strategy is to assert what is called the trans panic defense. The trans panic defense is not a traditional criminal law defense. Nor, despite its name, is it recognized as a stand-alone defense. Rather, trans panic is a defense strategy associated with the provocation or heat of passion defense. A murder defendant asserting trans panic will claim that the discovery that the victim was a transgender female—an individual thought …

‘Warming Up’ To Sustainable Procurement, Steven L. Schooner, Markus Speidel
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Procurement professionals will play a critical role in the belated but necessary effort to slow the pace of climate change. That critical, evolved role will lie in sustainable procurement, which, if effectively implemented, will dramatically alter markets and fundamentally change purchasing behaviors. To be effective, procurement professionals will need to rethink how we define our profession, assess our outcomes, and bring value to our government customers. Successfully establishing a sustainable procurement regime will require dramatic change, including, among other things, overcoming the persistent tyranny of low price, understanding and adopting lifecycle costing, considering externalities in the value proposition, and, of …
Solving The Challenges To World Trade, Steve Charnovitz
Solving The Challenges To World Trade, Steve Charnovitz
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
World trade faces fundamental challenges. This essay examines six threats to the intellectual case for open trade: to wit, worries about ecology, fairness, morality, equity, security, and geopolitics. Together, these threats implicate a huge swath of international trade. One of the biggest indicators of diminishing support for trade is the moribund status of the leading institution of the trading system, the World Trade Organization (WTO). There are three branches of WTO governance and all three are in trouble: the judicial branch and its vacant Appellate Body, the executive branch and its vacant post of WTO Director-General, and the legislative branch …
The New Law Of Gender Nonconformity, Naomi Schoenbaum
The New Law Of Gender Nonconformity, Naomi Schoenbaum
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
A central tenet of sex discrimination law is the protection of gender nonconformity: unless a feature of biological sex requires it, regulated entities may not expect that individuals will conform their gender performance to the stereotypes of their sex. This doctrine is critical to promoting the anti-stereotyping aims of sex discrimination law by allowing gender nonconformers from aggressive women to caregiving fathers to challenge expectations that would limit them to the gender performance that accords with their sex. Courts have extended gender nonconformity protection to transgender persons in cases where discrimination is due to gender performance.

Quantitative Analysis Of Human Blood Serum Using Vibrational Spectroscopy., Hugh Byrne, Franck Bonnier, Jennifer Mcintyre, Drishya Rajan Parachalil
Articles
Analysis of bodily fluids using vibrational spectroscopy has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In particular, infrared spectroscopic screening of blood products, particularly blood serum, for disease diagnostics has been advanced considerably, attracting commercial interests. However, analyses requiring quantification of endogenous constituents or exogenous agents in blood are less well advanced. Recent advances towards this end are reviewed, focussing on infrared and Raman spectroscopic analyses of human blood serum. The importance of spectroscopic analysis in the native aqueous environment is highlighted, and the relative merits of infrared absorption versus Raman spectroscopy are considered, in this context. It is argued that …

Potential Of Raman Spectroscopy For The Analysis Of Plasma/Serum In The Liquid State: Recent Advances, Drishya Rajan Parachalil, Jennifer Mcintyre, Hugh Byrne
Articles
There is compelling evidence in the literature to support the application of Raman spectroscopy for analysis of bodily fluids in their native liquid state. Naturally, the strategies described in the literature for Raman spectroscopic analysis of liquid samples have advantages and disadvantages. Herein, recent advances in the analysis of plasma/serum in the liquid state are reviewed. The potential advantages of Raman analysis in the liquid form over the commonly employed infrared absorption analysis in the dried droplet form are initially highlighted. Improvements in measurement protocols based on inverted microscopic geometries, clinically adaptable substrates, data preprocessing and analysis, and applications for …

Monitoring the uptake, micro-environment and fate of micro or nano scaled particulate materials in cells is of paramount importance for the emerging fields of toxicology and medicine. Such particulate materials are known to interfere with colorimetric assays and many such assays record only a single end-point. Therefore, there is a need for a label-free, cost effective technique with little or no inference from the particulate materials. Raman micro-spectroscopy was used to simultaneously interrogate the integrity of few-layer MoS2 submicrometric plates in human macrophage-like cells, in-vitro, as well as the biochemical characteristics of the local micro-environment in which they are encompassed. …

Herein, we investigated the use of multimodal Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopic microscopy for the elucidation of drug uptake and subsequent cellular responses. Firstly, we compared different methods for the analysis of the combined data. Secondly, we evaluated whether the combined analysis provided enough benefits to justify the fusion of the data. A459 cells inoculated with doxorubicin (DOX) at different times were fixed and analysed using each technique. Raman spectroscopy provided high sensitivity to DOX and enabled an accurate estimation of the drug uptake at each time point, whereas IR provided a better insight into the resultant changes in the …

Attenuated total reflectance-infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy is a robust tool for molecular characterisation of matter. Applied to semi-solid formulations, it enables rapid and reliable data collection without pre-analytical requirements. Based on nano-encapsulated Omegalight®, a skin-lightening active cosmetic ingredient (ACI), incorporated in a hydrogel, it is first demonstrated that, despite the high water content and the chemical complexity of the samples (i.e. number of ingredients), the spectral features of the ACI can be detected and monitored. Secondly, with a total of 105 samples divided into a training set (n = 60) and an unknown set (n = 45) covering a …

Confocal Raman mapping (CRM) is a powerful, label free, non-destructive tool, enabling molecular characterization of human skin with applications in the dermo-cosmetic field. Coupling CRM to multivariate analysis can be used to monitor the penetration and permeation of active cosmetic ingredients (ACI) after topical application. It is presently illustrated how multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) can be applied to detect and semi-quantitatively describe the diffusion profile of Delipidol, a commercially available slimming ACI, from Raman spectral maps. Although the analysis outcome can be critically dependent on the a priori selection of the number of regression components, it is …

Oral Squamous Cells Carcinoma (OSCC) is characterised by the risk of recurrence and the onset of a refractoriness response to chemotherapy drugs. These phenomena have been recently related to a subpopulation of Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs), which have either an innate or acquired drug resistance, triggered by chemotherapy treatments. In this light, to precisely target chemotherapy regimens, it is essential to improve knowledge on CSCs, with a particular focus on their molecular features. In this work, a subpopulation of CSCs, isolated by tumour sphere formation from primary OSCC cells, were treated with cisplatin for 16, 24 and 48 hours and …

Functional And Whole Regression-Based Genome-Wide Association Analyses For Weightmeasurements Of Chicken Eggs, Burak Karacaören
Functional And Whole Regression-Based Genome-Wide Association Analyses For Weightmeasurements Of Chicken Eggs, Burak Karacaören
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In genomic studies, complex traits can be modelled using repeated measures, thereby gaining a better understanding of the underlying biology. An increased number of measurements per individual might reduce measurement noise, thus increasing the likelihood of detecting true genomic signals. Here we aimed to predict genomic signals over a logistic curve referring to multiple underlying genetic architectures, for both simulated and longitudinal egg weight datasets. The chicken data were obtained from 92 sires and 801 dams of an 11th generation pure line, resulting in data from 1078 hens. We analysed longitudinal measurements of egg weights with 294,705 single nucleotide polymorphisms …

Herbal Feed Additives Containing Tannins: Impact On In Vitro Fermentation And Methanemitigation From Total Mixed Ration, Manju Wadhwa, Prabh Kaur Sidhu, Mohinder Pal Singh Bakshi
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Total mixed ration (TMR) containing roughage and concentrate mixture in a 65: 35 ratio on dry matter (DM) basis was supplemented with herbal feed additives [(HFAs); Acacia catechu (Katha), Areca catechu (Supari), and Acacia nilotica (Babul)] at 0-4% on DM basis to assess their impact on fermentation pattern and methane production by using in vitro gas production technique. Areca catechu had the highest (P < 0.01) concentration of condensed tannins (CTs), saponins, and vitamin C as compared to other HFAs. The net gas production (NGP), digestibility of NDF and true OM, and ME availability, partitioning factor (PF), volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and microbial biomass production were higher (P < 0.01) at 24 h as compared to t-half incubation, irrespective of type and level of HFAs supplemented. Acacia nilotica had an edge over Acacia catechu with respect to digestibility of nutrients and ME availability. VFAs production and efficiency of rumen fermentation was the highest from the Areca catechu-supplemented TMR. Irrespective of type of HFAs and incubation period, the digestibility of NDF and that of true OM were highest (P < 0.01) at the 1% level of supplementation, but depressed thereafter. Amongst HFAs-supplemented groups, VFA production and fermentation efficiency were highest at the 2% level. The results conclusively revealed that supplementing Areca catechu and Acacia nilotica at 2% of TMR (DM basis) inhibited the methane production, without affecting the fermentation pattern.

A total of 200 one-day-old hens were separated randomly into control (Con), heat stress (HS), 0.1% EGB administration and heat stress (0.1% EGB+HS), 0.3% EGB administration and heat stress (0.3% EGB+HS), and 0.6% EGB administration and heat stress (0.6% EGB+HS) groups. After EGB761 administration for 45 days, ten chickens were selected randomly, assigned to one of the designated groups, and exposed to a one-time heat stress condition of 38 ± 1 °C for …

Mytilus galloprovincialis , the Mediterranean mussel, is an important shellfish species that constitutes the majority of production and consumption among bivalve mollusks in Turkey. Since shellfish can accumulate toxic chemicals from seawater, it is important to monitor bioaccumulation from their natural beds. For this reason, in this study, the aim was to monitor the levels of dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and toxic metals (Pb, Cd, and Hg) in M. galloprovincialis collected from the southern coast of the Marmara Sea from 2014 to 2017. According to the results, the maximum levels of dioxins, PAHs, and …

This study aimed to demonstrate the expression profiles of lincRNAs and mRNAs affecting milk yield and composition traits in the milk-derived exosomes of Holstein and Doğu Anadolu Kırmızısı (DAK) cows. For this purpose, the locations of these specific lincRNAs and mRNAs were confirmed in quantitative trait loci. Then RT-PCR analysis was performed to identify the expression profiles of the lincRNAs and mRNAs. Lastly, correlation analysis was carried out between milk yield data from Holstein and DAK cows and expression levels of the lincRNAs and mRNAs. The findings showed that while lincRNAs and mRNAs associated with milk yield traits were upregulated …
