Late Quaternary Sea-Level History Of Saipan, Commonwealth Of The Northern Mariana Islands, Usa: A Test Of Tectonic Uplift And Glacial Isostatic Adjustment Models, Daniel R. Muhs, Eugene S. Schweig, Kathleen R. Simmons Jan 2020

Late Quaternary Sea-Level History Of Saipan, Commonwealth Of The Northern Mariana Islands, Usa: A Test Of Tectonic Uplift And Glacial Isostatic Adjustment Models, Daniel R. Muhs, Eugene S. Schweig, Kathleen R. Simmons

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In 1979, S. Uyeda and H. Kanamori proposed a tectonic model with two end members of a subduction-boundary continuum: the “Chilean” type (shallow dip of the subducting plate, great thrust events, compression, and uplift of the overriding plate) and a “Mariana” type (steep dip of the subducting plate, no great thrust events, tension, and no uplift). This concept has been used to explain variable rates of Quaternary uplift around the Pacific Rim, yet no uplift rates have been determined for the Mariana Islands themselves, one of the end members in this model. We studied the late Quaternary Tanapag Limestone, which …

Studies in cattle show CD8 cytotoxic T cells (CTL), with the ability to kill intracellular bacteria, develop following stimulation of monocyte-depleted peripheral blood mononuclear cells (mdPBMC) with antigen-presenting cells (APC, i.e. conventional dendritic cells [cDC] and monocyte-derived DC [MoDC]) pulsed with MMP, a membrane protein from Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) encoded byMAP2121c. CTL activity was diminished if CD4 T cells were depleted from mdPBMC before antigen (Ag) presentation by APC, suggesting simultaneous cognate recognition of MMP epitopes presented by MHC I and MHC II molecules to CD4 and CD8 T cells is essential for development of CTL activity. To …

Mageb2 Antibody As Potential Diagnostic And Predictive Tool In The Progression Of Oral Cancer, Awang Hasyim Noratikah Jan 2020

Mageb2 Antibody As Potential Diagnostic And Predictive Tool In The Progression Of Oral Cancer, Awang Hasyim Noratikah

Student Works (2020-2029)

Introduction: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) represents more than 90% of all oral cancer. Despite advances in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, mortality and morbidity rates have not improved in the last decade. Hence, alternative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are urgently needed. Cancer testes antigens (CTA) are proteins that are expressed in various malignant tumours but its expression in normal tissue is restricted to testes and occasionally placental trophoblast. Due to its exclusive presence in different types of malignant tumors, and their ability to trigger immune responses, CTA are considered promising biomarkers for cancer vaccines. A previous protein array study reported …

Polymicrobial Interactions Between Selected Microbes Of Oral Biofilm And Differential Expression Of Als Genes And Their Related Proteins, Fahim Ayesha

Student Works (2020-2029)

More than 700 different types of microorganisms dwell in human oral mucosal surfaces. The interactions between these microorganisms contribute to formation of polymicrobial communities on hard and soft tissues as well as on dentures and implants. Candida albicans, a pleomorphic fungus inhabiting oral and gastrointestinal (GIT) mucosa becomes pathogenic in favourable conditions causing local or systemic disease. Since streptococci are early colonisers, the ability of Candida albicans to adhere to streptococci paves the way for an additional surface for candidal colonization and propagation. This study was aimed to investigate polymicrobial interactions between C. albicans, S. sanguinis and S. mitis on …

Student Works (2020-2029)

Introduction: Human deciduous periodontal ligament stem cells represent as another source of stem cells from the dental origin. These cells were shown to have multi-potential attributes and also self renewing ability. These easily accessible stem cells candidate could also resolve issues concerning ethical and compatability for the use in regenerative purposes. However, their efficiency towards hepatic lineage differentiation has not been addressed so far. Meanwhile, the main contributor for regenerative properties were supposedly mediated by soluble factors and extracellular vesicles such as exosomes secreted by cells. Objectives: The aims of this study are to isolate, characterize and also to investigate …

Future Of Thailand's Captive Elephants, Antoinette Van De Water, Michelle Henley, Lucy Bates, Rob Slotow Jan 2020

Future Of Thailand's Captive Elephants, Antoinette Van De Water, Michelle Henley, Lucy Bates, Rob Slotow

Animal Sentience

Removal from natural habitat and commodification as private property compromise elephants’ broader societal value. Although we support Baker & Winkler’s (2020) plea for a new community-based rewilding conservation model focused on mahout culture, we recommend an expanded co-management approach to complement and enhance the regional elephant conservation strategy with additional local community stakeholders and the potential to extend across international borders into suitable elephant habitat. Holistic co-management approaches improve human wellbeing and social cohesion, as well as elephant wellbeing, thereby better securing long-term survival of Asian elephants, environmental justice, and overall sustainability.

Parents also took part in interviews to provide an additional perspective on the underachievement experience. Findings indicated five themes that contribute to underachievement among this population. Expectations were a major contributor to underachievement. …

Wolves In Sheep’S Clothing: How Religious Exemption Laws For Discriminatory Private Agencies Violate The Constitution And Harm Lgbtq+ Families, Kharis Lund Jan 2020

Wolves In Sheep’S Clothing: How Religious Exemption Laws For Discriminatory Private Agencies Violate The Constitution And Harm Lgbtq+ Families, Kharis Lund

Student Articles & Notes

For LGBTQ+ parents who live in states where a select few faith-based private agencies control the placement of a majority of the state’s children, religious organizations that refuse to place children with LGBTQ+ prospective parents pose a particularly concerning barrier to fostering and adoption. To turn away otherwise qualified prospective parents solely based on their sexual orientation or gender identity is to further deprive a system that is already burdened of one of its key components, directly antithetical to the primary goal of the child welfare system. Although religious child welfare agencies have played, and continue to play, an important …

A higher minimum (night-time) temperature is considered a greater limiting factor for reduced rice yield than a similar increase in maximum (daytime) temperature. While the physiological impact of high night temperature (HNT) has been studied, the genetic and molecular basis of HNT stress response remains unexplored.

We examined the phenotypic variation for mature grain size (length and width) in a diverse set of rice accessions under HNT stress. Genome-wide association analysis identified several HNT-specific loci regulating grain size as well as loci that are common for optimal and HNT stress conditions.

A novel locus contributing to grain width under HNT …

Leveraging Genome-Enabled Growth Models To Study Shoot Growth Responses To Water Deficit In Rice, Malachy T. Campbell, Alexandre Grondin, Harkamal Walia, Gota Morota

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

lucidating genotype-by-environment interactions and partitioning its contribution to phenotypic variation remains a challenge for plant scientists. We propose a framework that utilizes genome-wide markers to model genotype-specific shoot growth trajectories as a function of time and soil water availability. A rice diversity panel was phenotyped daily for 21 d using an automated, high-throughput image-based, phenotyping platform that enabled estimation of daily shoot biomass and soil water content. Using these data, we modeled shoot growth as a function of time and soil water content, and were able to determine the time point where an inflection in the growth trajectory occurred. We …

Voxel Carving-Based 3d Reconstruction Of Sorghum Identifies Genetic Determinants Of Light Interception Efficiency, Mathieu Gaillard, Chenyong Miao, James Schnable, Bedrich Benes Jan 2020

Voxel Carving-Based 3d Reconstruction Of Sorghum Identifies Genetic Determinants Of Light Interception Efficiency, Mathieu Gaillard, Chenyong Miao, James Schnable, Bedrich Benes

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Changes in canopy architecture traits have been shown to contribute to yield increases. Optimizing both light interception and light interception efficiency of agricultural crop canopies will be essential to meeting the growing food needs. Canopy architecture is inherently three-dimensional (3D), but many approaches to measuring canopy architecture component traits treat the canopy as a two-dimensional (2D) structure to make large scale measurement, selective breeding, and gene identification logistically feasible. We develop a high throughput voxel carving strategy to reconstruct 3D representations of sorghum from a small number of RGB photos. Our approach builds on the voxel carving algorithm to allow …

Heterosis, or hybrid vigour, is a predominant phenomenon in plant genetics, serving as the basis of crop hybrid breeding, but the causative loci and genes underlying heterosis remain unclear in many crops. Here, we present a large-scale genetic analysis using 5360 offsprings from three elite maize hybrids, which identifies 628 loci underlying 19 yield-related traits with relatively high mapping resolutions. Heterotic pattern investigations of the 628 loci show that numerous loci, mostly with complete–incomplete dominance (the major one) or overdominance effects (the secondary one) for heterozygous genotypes and nearly equal proportion of advantageous alleles from both parental lines, are the …

Impacts Of The Reproductive Cycle On The Microbiome: Lessons From Peromyscus Maniculatus, Stephania Jimenez-Castro

McNair Scholars

This low-cost pilot study performed in an animal model attempts to answer the question of whether the estrous cycle affects skin bacteria population size and diversity. In the study, deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are models because the University of Northern Colorado maintains a colony at the animal research facility, and the rodents have a conveniently short reproductive cycle. Vaginal swabs and flushes were collected for two full estrous cycles to obtain cells for determination of the phase of the cycle and flora samples to examine diversity and population size. We witnessed the vaginal flora fluctuate throughout the entire cycle …

Stages Of Racial Identity Development Among Multiracial Undergraduates, Olivia Bobbitt Jan 2020

Stages Of Racial Identity Development Among Multiracial Undergraduates, Olivia Bobbitt

McNair Scholars

Individuals who identify as multiracial have been on the rise since interracial marriages became legal in 1967. 2000 was the first Census year in which “two or more races” was an option for individuals to identify themselves. Most previous research focuses on individuals whose racial heritage is a mixture of Black and white. While this research is rich and informative, it fails to incorporate individuals that identify as two or more marginalized racial identities such as Black/African American and Hispanic or Asian Pacific and Native American. The current study will address this gap in research by focusing on individuals who …

Marxist And Socialist Feminism, Elisabeth Armstrong Jan 2020

Marxist And Socialist Feminism, Elisabeth Armstrong

Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications

Beginning in the 1840s, Marxism has analyzed unpaid, reproductive “women’s work” as an integral part of capitalism. Marxist feminism historicizes reproduction in relation to production to better understand women’s exploitation and oppression in capitalism. Marxist feminism also theorizes revolutionary subjectivity and possibilities for an anti-capitalist future. Particularly important to Marxist feminism are its theories of imperialism and primitive accumulation, or theft, of land, resources and women’s unpaid labor to the reproduction of lives and generations.

Causes Of Variable Jarrah (Eucalyptus Marginata) And Marri (Corymbia Calophylla) Seedling Density At Establishment Following Bauxite Mining In The Northern Jarrah Forest Of Western Australia, Tai White-Toney

Theses

Seedling densities at establishment of jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata D. Don ex Sm.) and marri (Corymbia calophylla (Lindl). K. D. Hill & L. A. S. Johnson) following bauxite mining in the Northern Jarrah Forest of south-western Australia are variable and few factors explored during 40 years of field studies have explained this variability. This study explored establishment within the framework of limitation due to amount of seed supply and number of suitable microsites for establishment. First, relationships were identified between seedling establishment densities on 654 mine sites restored between 1998 and 2017 and restoration practices (seed and fertiliser application rates), climate …

Times Of The Multitude And The Antichrist, Gary Shapiro Jan 2020

Times Of The Multitude And The Antichrist, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In Nietzsche’s Europeanism Gary Shapiro discerns key resonances of his “great politics of the Earth” out of which those capable of “re-thinking the direction of the earth” may ultimately deploy a “philosophy of the Antichrist” to realize their vision of the future. In considering how philosophers of the future may create the opportune moment in which to revalue all values in such a new direction, Shapiro accounts for Nietzsche’s rejection of the priestly philosophers’ teleological conception of time. He also explicates Nietzsche’s notion of the multitude (Menge), whose diversity contrasts with the homogenous masses and mitigates against the reactionary state.
