Gulf and Caribbean Research
Trophodynamics and ecosystem models have been increasingly used in evaluating fish stocks, requiring accurate diet data; however, complications with identifications arise when the soft tissues of fish prey break down during digestion, limiting the taxonomic resolution obtained during stomach content analyses. Although scales and otoliths are relatively resistant to digestion, their usefulness for distinguishing among fish prey species is limited. Jawbones are frequently observed in predator stomach contents, and while morphologies of some fishes have been described, available information is frequently inadequate for practical application in stomach content analyses. Line drawings have long been the traditional means to convey complex …

Lake Or Estuary? Sedimentary And Benthic Foraminiferal Characterization Of A Gulf Of Mexico Coastal Dune Lake, Kaylyn C. Bellais, Samuel T. Barber, Donald A. Beebe, Murlene W. Clark
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Coastal dune lakes are shallow estuaries located within dune environments that share a permanent or intermittent connection with the sea. Because coastal dune lakes are found in few locations worldwide (e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Florida, etc.) they represent unique environments worthy of protection. However; there is a distinct lack of scientific data related to the function and ecology of coastal dune lakes, especially in the Gulf of Mexico. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to characterize the sedimentology and foraminifera of a representative coastal dune lake in Walton County, FL (i.e. Eastern Lake) and determine whether it shares geologic …

Assessing A Two-Hit Model Of Schizophrenia: Prenatal Choline Deficiency And Induced Hypofunction Of Nmda Receptors In Male And Female Long Evans Rats, Samuel Gray, Samuel W. Gray
Honors Theses
Choline is an essential dietary nutrient essential to the development and function of the central nervous system. Prenatal choline deficiency alters hippocampal development as well as acetylcholine metabolism, leading to cognitive impairments and attentional and sensory processing deficits into adulthood. MK-801 is an NMDA receptor antagonist frequently used in rodent models of neuropsychiatric conditions, particularly schizophrenia. Acutely and sub- chronically, it causes hyperlocomotion and social withdrawal. One primary goal of the present study were to investigate prenatal choline deficiency induces a biological vulnerability to the motor deficits, anhedonia, and social impairment precipitated by low-dose sub-chronic MK-801 administration in adulthood. Another …
Executive Function Deficit As A Precursor To Memory Impairments In Hapoe4 Transgenic Rats, Kaitlin Mcmanus
Executive Function Deficit As A Precursor To Memory Impairments In Hapoe4 Transgenic Rats, Kaitlin Mcmanus
Honors Theses
The hApoE4 allele is one of the strongest genetic risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It underlies amyloid-bdeposits and neurofibrillary tangles, the two hallmarks associated with AD pathology, and is subsequently associated with AD symptomology. Despite its importance, no rat animal studies to date use hApoE4 knock-ins. In addition to this deficit in the field of AD literature, the vast majority of AD studies focus on memory, even though executive function deficits may precede memory impairments in AD, and may be a predictor of AD development. Thus, the present study addressed these gaps in AD research by investigating the behavioral …
When Prosecutors Politick: Progressive Law Enforcers Then And Now, Bruce A. Green, Rebecca Roiphe
When Prosecutors Politick: Progressive Law Enforcers Then And Now, Bruce A. Green, Rebecca Roiphe
Faculty Scholarship
A new and recognizable group of reform-minded prosecutors has assumed the mantle of progressive prosecution. The term is hard to define in part because its adherents embrace a diverse set of policies and priorities. In comparing the contemporary movement with Progressive Era prosecutors, this Article has two related goals. First, it seeks to better define progressive prosecution. Second, it uses a historical comparison to draw some lessons for the current movement. Both groups of prosecutors were elected on a wave of popular support. Unlike today’s mainstream prosecutors who tend to campaign and labor in relative obscurity, these two sets of …

Chlorophyll-Inspired Tunable Metamaterials With Multi-Negative Refractive Index Bands: The Porphyrin Ring And Hydrophobic Tail Effect, Nantakan Wongkasem
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Tunable negative electromagnetic properties: permittivity, permeability, and refractive index, in mimic Chlorophyll metamaterial structures in the X- and Ku-band regimes are theoretically and numerically demonstrated. A very broad negative permeability covering the majority of the X- and Ku bands, from 8GHz to 16GHz, is observed, while five negative permittivity bands are found within the same range. The two aforementioned properties result in a broad, greater than 25% bandwidth, low-loss negative-refractive index transmission band. These negative electromagnetic properties can be effectively tailored within the low-loss multi-transmission and the high-loss multi-absorption bands in the operating frequency range by modifying the structure’s tiller …
Ensemble Node Embeddings Using Tensor Decomposition: A Case-Study On Deepwalk, Jia Chen, Evangelos E. Papalexakis
Ensemble Node Embeddings Using Tensor Decomposition: A Case-Study On Deepwalk, Jia Chen, Evangelos E. Papalexakis
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Node embeddings have been attracting increasing attention during the past years. In this context, we propose a new ensemble node embedding approach, called TENSEMBLE2VEC, by first generating multiple embeddings using the existing techniques and taking them as multiview data input of the state-of-art tensor decomposition model namely PARAFAC2 to learn the shared lower-dimensional representations of the nodes. Contrary to other embedding methods, our TENSEMBLE2VEC takes advantage of the complementary information from different methods or the same method with different hyper-parameters, which bypasses the challenge of choosing models. Extensive tests using real-world data validates the efficiency of the proposed method.

Synthesis And The Genetic Encoding Of Novel Lysine Post-Translational Modifications, Sahan A. Galbada Liyanage
Theses and Dissertations
Post-translational modifications (PTMs) play a significant role in regulating cell signaling and regulating the inner cellular environment. The study of PTMs and their primary biological functions is critical for the development of new medicines targeting the pathways and biomolecules responsible for the PTMs.
Previous studies revealed the direct coupling of the β -hydroxybutyryl lysine (KBHB) modification with the gene expression. KBHB in histone proteins links metabolism to epigenetics and gene expression and enables to study in-depth, how cell metabolism controls the gene expression and vice versa. Similar novel histone modification, KLac, attracts a special interest …

Investigating The Role Of Protein Phosphatase 2a In The Salt Stress Response In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Daniel J. Dirocco
Investigating The Role Of Protein Phosphatase 2a In The Salt Stress Response In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Daniel J. Dirocco
Honors Theses and Capstones
Protein Phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is a ubiquitous enzyme in eukaryotes that regulates a large array of cellular signaling processes. PP2A is composed of three subunits: catalytic C subunit, regulatory B subunit, and scaffolding/regulatory A subunit. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the A subunit has three isoforms - A1, A2, and A3 - that are highly conserved at the protein level, indicating that these proteins may be functionally interchangeable. In comparison to wildtype plants, seedlings with a mutation in the A1 gene have roots with obvious root cell file rotation or twisting under conditions of moderate salt stress. Twisted root cells result …

How Efficient Is Market Pricing: Can Investors Beat The Market? Further, Are Prices Always Right As Stated In The Efficient Market Hypothesis?, Porter M. Mcmanus
Honors Theses and Capstones
The Efficient Market Hypothesis is a widely accepted economic theory developed by economist Eugene Fama. The theory states that at any given time, an asset’s price reflects all available public information and will always trade at fair value. The motivation for this research is derived from the content taught in undergraduate finance courses. In undergraduate academia finance students are introduced to the idea of market efficiency, as it is a building block for future theory and application. However, this theory is rarely questioned in the world of undergraduate academia, rather just taken as fact by students.
The underlying research in …
Identifying Rpa-Dependent Epigenetic Modifications Influencing Arabidopsis Thaliana Flowering Time, Emily S. Berry
Identifying Rpa-Dependent Epigenetic Modifications Influencing Arabidopsis Thaliana Flowering Time, Emily S. Berry
Honors Theses and Capstones
Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes that do not directly alter the DNA sequence. Many of these inheritance mechanisms are caused by the addition of a methyl group to cytosine nucleotides in DNA that prevent gene expression. The model organism Arabidopsis thaliana (abbreviated A. thaliana) is commonly used in genetic experiments, and its usefulness is extended to research in epigenetics. Our current research (Culligan lab), in part, focuses on genes involved in DNA damage and repair, such as brca2 and the rpa1a/b/c/d/e genes. Previous genetic analyses suggests that the rpa1c/e double-mutant typically expresses an early flowering phenotype despite …
