Statistical Literacy As Health Literacy: The Role Of Emotions In Health Decision-Making, Kendra Murphy
Statistical Literacy As Health Literacy: The Role Of Emotions In Health Decision-Making, Kendra Murphy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Lifestyle-related health problems remain a leading cause of chronic illness in the United States, creating a need for more effective communication of health information. However, the mechanisms that influence how individuals understand and use health information are not yet fully understood. This exploratory study investigates the intersections of statistical health literacy, emotions, and health decision-making from an interdisciplinary perspective. Guided by prior literature suggesting potential relationships among these factors, the study hypothesized that statistical literacy and emotional responses would modify responses to the form of health information presentation, affect the believability and motivational impact of the information, and influence health …

All In God's Plan?: Examining Positive And Negative Religious Coping As Moderators Of Posttraumatic Stress And Alcohol Use Following Intimate Partner Violence Exposure, Mya Elizabeth Bowen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is defined as physical violence, sexual violence, stalking, or psychological aggression by a current or former intimate partner or spouse (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Recognized as a pervasive public health concern, approximately 41% of women report experiences of sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking, and over 61 million women report experiencing psychological aggression, all at the hands of an intimate partner (Leemis et al., 2022). The pervasive nature of IPV is particularly concerning as experiences of violence can result in significant negative physical and psychological health concerns, including the development of PTSD …
Chemically Mediated Communication In Mound-Building Termites, Sree Subha Ramaswamy
Chemically Mediated Communication In Mound-Building Termites, Sree Subha Ramaswamy
Theses and Dissertations
Nest-building in social insects requires layered communication to coordinate complex, functional structures for housing, protection, storage, and homeostasis. This is especially striking in mound-building termites, which construct and repair large mounds collectively despite lacking image-forming eyes. This thesis investigates how Odontotermes obesus achieves such coordination through chemical communication embedded in soil.
Using controlled two-choice assays with manipulated soils, I separated airborne volatile signals from contact non-volatile signals by baking to remove volatiles, a mesh assay that presented volatile cues without contact, and solvent extraction with reapplication of contact cues. I quantified responses in major-only, minor-only, and mixed groups at two …

Reintroducing native plants into restoration and revegetation projects could increase plant species diversity, increase floral resources for pollinators, and positively affect trophic-level interactions in the community. Direct seeding in restoration projects has generally had poor success rates due to biotic and abiotic factors, leading to significant seed wastage of the already insufficient native seed supply. Seed balls (aka seed aggregates, seed bombs, and seed pellets) are a low-cost, low-tech seed enhancement technology. The seeds are encased in a soil and clay matrix, providing good seed-soil contact, controlling seed planting depth, nutrients, and protection from seed predators. We conducted a greenhouse …

Impacting Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk Screening In The Primary Care Setting, Rosalyn Primus
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death worldwide. Despite the availability of evidence-based guidelines recommending routine cardiovascular risk screening, tools such as the atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) Risk Estimator are underutilized in primary care settings. This quality improvement project implemented an evidence-based educational intervention to enhance healthcare providers' knowledge, self-efficacy, and consistent utilization of the ASCVD Risk Estimator within a primary care setting. The project employed a quasi-experimental design involving four primary care providers. Data was collected through various methods, including a knowledge questionnaire, the Evidence-Based Nursing Practice Self-Efficacy (EBPSE) Scale, a retrospective chart review, and a …

Long intergenic non-coding RNA 00,511 (LINC00511) is considered an oncogene for various cancers. However, the association between LINC00511 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. Our study aims to study whether LINC00511 SNPs could predict CRC susceptibility or prognosis, an important step-toward precision-health, based on an Egyptian CRC patient cohort. A total of 200 CRC patients and 200 cancer-free controls were genotyped for three LINC00511 SNPs − rs9906859, rs1558535, and rs17780195 using qRT-PCR. Studied SNPs were in strong linkage disequilibrium and moderately correlated in all groups. Genotype association concerning tumor stage, revealed rs1558535 AT and rs17780195 AG …

The Impact Of Early Life Experiences On Math Confidence, Nhu X. Hin
Master's Theses
Students form beliefs about their academic abilities through a combination of emotional experiences and early learning environments. While prior research has documented how math anxiety can undermine performance and how early experiences with math-typed activities can foster positive attitudes, less is known about how these factors collectively influence students’ math confidence. The present study investigates how math anxiety, engagement in childhood math-typed activities, and perceived support for math-related learning contribute to college students’ confidence in their math abilities. Participants (N = 102) completed self-report measures assessing each of these constructs. A multiple regression analysis revealed that the three predictors collectively …

Background/Objectives: Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive, molecularly heterogeneous subtype of breast cancer, accounting for approximately 10–15% of all cases. While reproductive and metabolic factors contribute to breast cancer development, growing concerns about environmental exposures, alongside biological and socio-cultural influences, underscore the need for targeted prevention strategies across diverse populations. Despite increasing evidence linking biological, socioeconomic, and environmental factors to TNBC outcomes, the molecular mechanisms underlying these relationships remain poorly understood. Micro-RNAs (miRNAs), which regulate gene expression and play critical roles in cancer development, have emerged as potential mediators between environmental exposures and TNBC progression. The goal of …

RNA post-transcriptional modifications act by stabilizing the functional conformations of RNA. While their role in messenger RNA (mRNA) decoding is well established, it is less clear how transfer RNA (tRNA) modifications outside the anticodon contribute to tRNA stability and accurate protein synthesis. Absence of such modifications causes translation errors, including mRNA frameshifting. By integrating single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer and cryogenic electron microscopy, we demonstrate that the N1-methylguanosine (m1G) modification at position 37 of Escherichia coli tRNAProL is necessary and sufficient for modulating the conformational energy of this tRNA on the ribosome so as to suppress +1 frameshifting otherwise induced …

Trauma-Born Generations And Intergenerational Conflict: A Study Of Tensions In The Contemporary South Korean, Daihyun Kim
Dissertations and Theses
This paper analyzes how traumatic events that have been repeated in modern Korean history have affected each generation's identity and emotional structure, and how intergenerational conflicts arise, are structured, and reproduced. This study divides the groups of people born in the period from "The Liberation" in 1945 to 2025 into four generations: the Industrialization Generation, the Democratization Generation, the Capitalist Generation, and the Isolation Generation. Each generation has remembered major historical events such as the Korean War, the Gwangju Democratization Movement, the IMF foreign exchange crisis, the Sewol ferry and the Itaewon disaster in a unique way, thereby forming an …

Purpose: Hippocampal avoidance (HA) during therapeutic whole-brain radiotherapy reduces the risk of neurocognitive function (NCF) toxicity in patients with brain metastasis. This trial hypothesized that HA during prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) leads to noninferior intracranial relapse (ICR) and reduction in NCF toxicity.
Methods: This randomized phase II/III trial enrolled patients with SCLC, no brain metastases, and response to chemotherapy. The primary end points were 12-month ICR (noninferiority design, randomized phase II) and 6-month Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R) Delayed Recall (DR) failure (phase III). Secondary end points were failure in any NCF …

Residential childcare workers provide critical support to vulnerable children around the world. Building and maintaining a qualified residential childcare workforce is challenged by myriad forces, the foremost of which is recruiting and retaining staff for valuable work often misaligned with available compensation; making individual qualifications at hiring; ongoing training; supervision; and data support systems to monitor performance critical for quality care. This study explored the similarities and differences among these essential elements of staffing across distinct programs: Youth Education Centers (YEC) in Poland, CiudadEscuela Muchachos (CEMU) in Spain, and the Boys Town Family Home Program (BTFHP) in the United States. …

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly recognized as key regulators of gene expression and cellular signaling in cancer. Their functions are primarily mediated through interactions with specific protein partners that modulate chromatin structure, epigenetic remodeling, transcription, and signal transduction. In this review, we explore reports and strategies for the proteomic characterization of lncRNA-associated proteins, particularly emphasizing high-throughput liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based techniques. Affinity-based methods such as RNA pull-down, ChIRP MS, RAP-MS, BioID-MS, and SILAC-MS enable sensitive and specific mapping of lncRNA and protein complexes. These approaches reveal cancer-specific proteomic signatures, post-translational modifications, and mechanistic insights into tumor biology. The use …

High Temperature In Potato: Plant Responses And Adaptive Cultivation Strategies To Increase Production, Siska Rahmayani Gultom, Jajang Sauman Hamdani, Kusumiyati
Jurnal Kultivasi
Climate change, with global temperatures rising by 1.09°C from 1850–1900 to 2011–2020, threatens potato production, a critical staple crop, by exceeding the optimal temperature range of 15–20°C. This review synthesizes over 45 peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025 from Google Scholar and ScienceDirect to evaluate the physiological, morphological, and tuber quality responses of potatoes to high temperatures and to identify adaptive cultivation strategies for sustainable production. High temperatures reduce photosynthetic efficiency through chlorophyll degradation and stomatal closure, increase respiration, and divert photosynthates to vegetative growth, leading to 18–32% yield losses globally by the 2050s. Heat-tolerant varieties, such as Atlantic …

Ferrous ions in four-coordinate environments are common in protein structures, synthetic catalysts, and molecular magnets. The 3d6 configuration of high-spin Fe(II) imparts an S = 2 ground state, whose analysis using conventional spectroscopic methods is often hindered by substantial zero-field splitting (ZFS). Herein, we provide detailed electronic-structure descriptions for [FeIIX(TptBu,Me)] (1-X; X = F, Cl, Br, I), where (TptBu,Me)− is hydrotris(3-tert-butyl-5-methyl-pyrazol-1-yl)borate. The three pyrazolyl N-donors of the “scorpionate” ligand facially coordinate to Fe(II), giving idealized C3v symmetry with the halide occupying the axial position. Although originally reported …

Copper Oxide Nanoparticles As Delivery Vehicles For Different Pt (Ii)-Drugs: Experimental And Theoretical Evaluation, Shahdan Abdelkareem
Theses and Dissertations
Platinum(II)-based chemotherapeutic agents such as cisplatin, oxaliplatin, and nedaplatin are mainstays in the treatment of a wide range of solid tumors, yet their clinical application is severely restricted by rapid degradation, poor bioavailability, and dose-limiting side effects. These challenges arise in part from the drugs’ susceptibility to premature hydrolysis, off-target interactions in the bloodstream, and degradation in the gastrointestinal tract, which collectively limit their ability to reach and act on tumor cells. To address these limitations, we explored the use of copper(II) oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) as nanocarriers for platinum(II) drugs, aiming to enhance drug stability, loading, and controlled release. …

This study aimed to evaluate the dosimetric impact of Hybrid Arc Palliative Radiation Therapy (HART) versus conventional anterior-posterior/posterior-anterior (APPA) beam arrangements for thoracic spine metastases. The primary objective was to assess differences in conformity, homogeneity, and organ-at-risk (OAR) sparing between the two techniques. A retrospective plan comparison was conducted using anonymized datasets from twenty patients previously treated with HART. Each case was replanned using a standard APPA technique, normalized to match the target coverage of the original HART plan within 0.1%. All plans were prescribed 20 Gy in 5 fractions. Plan quality was evaluated using conformity index (CI), homogeneity index …

Understanding how water moves through a watershed is one of the most fundamental yet often complicated aspects of hydrology, especially in urban areas. Urban infrastructure and water management alter natural hydrological pathways in developed watersheds, which can violate assumptions of a watershed approach to ecosystem science. We focus on two aspects of urban landscapes that often create challenges to model watershed processes within and among urban areas: (1) accurate delineation of urban flow paths and (2) consistent characterisation of the urban landscape within and among cities. Here, we describe these challenges and identify how certain components of these challenges can …

Waking Up The Youth: Sleep Is Essential For Health
According to the World Sleep Society, sleep, like good food and exercise, is a behavior essential to physical, mental and social well-being. Adequate sleep at appropriate time is necessary for optimal health and safety, while changes in sleep time and duration are intertwined with a variety of metabolic, cardiovascular, endocrine, and neurological disorders1,2.Therefore,sleep, which is directly related to health and quality of life, is considered a basic human need to maintain his/ her bio-psycho-social and cultural functions3.
The timing and duration of sleep for …

PI3K inhibition causes apoptosis selectively in NOTCH1-mutant head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), but modest single-agent responses and acquired resistance (AR) limit the clinical efficacy of targeted agents. To address these limitations, we investigated novel combination therapies. We tested the efficacy of 5768 compounds as single agents and 139 in combination with PI3K inhibitors in sensitive and AR NOTCH1-mutant HNSCC cell lines. We generated synergy/efficacy classifications for the combinations using multiple metrics of statistical drug synergy and growth rate indices. The PLK1/PI3K combination's efficacy was validated using orthogonal in vitro methods and in two HNSCC xenograft models. Compound efficacy …
Developing Resilience In First Year Collegiate Athletes: The Effectiveness Of A Resilience And Strengths Based Course, Dorian J. Hayden
Developing Resilience In First Year Collegiate Athletes: The Effectiveness Of A Resilience And Strengths Based Course, Dorian J. Hayden
Dissertations, 2020-current
Research shows that college students have increased levels of mental health difficulties with freshmen transitioning into college experiencing even more strain. What further contributes to these difficulties includes having experienced the COVID pandemic in high school, low socioeconomic status (SES), and racial minority status. Student-athletes, although known to have better mental health than non-student-athletes, still underutilize their abundance of resources. Generally, a skill that has been established as beneficial in managing the difficulties related to college is resilience, suggesting the implementation of a more accessible resource to support the mental health of student-athletes transitioning into college. One such resource is …

It Shucks To Be Inbred: Effects Of Small Population Sizes On Genomic Diversity Of Hatchery Reared Olympia Oysters (Ostrea Lurida), Anna S. Heasley
Master's Theses
Olympia oysters (Ostrea lurida), critical members of estuarine ecosystems along the California Current Ecosystem (CCE), have faced significant population declines due to historical overfishing and habitat deterioration. Today, managers from multiple estuaries across the CCE are focusing on conservation aquaculture breeding efforts to aid in restoration; however, the genetic implications of these efforts remain unexplored. As with other Ostrea spp, Olympia oysters have a viviparous reproductive strategy that creates unique challenges for aquaculture-mediated restoration. This study evaluates the genetic impact of current captive breeding practices on Olympia oyster cohorts produced in three California estuaries: Elkhorn Slough (EHS), Morro Bay (MB), …
