Plant community responses to environmental changes depend upon management strategies, climate, topography, and time. The objective herein was to determine canopy coverage and botanical changes in Turkish highland rangelands with different topographical characteristics between 1993 and 2013. Trends in the plant composition changed depending on the slope aspect (compass direction) and topography. The contribution of the grasses to the canopy decreased, while that of legumes and the other families increased. The results indicated that rangeland degradation occurred under uncontrolled grazing conditions. Suitable range management changes are recommended for the conservation of natural resources in the highland rangelands of Turkey.

Turkish Journal of Botany
The genus Sauvetrea Szlach. (Orchidaceae) was segregated from Maxillaria sensu lato in 2007. It embraces a group of from 10 to nearly 20 species, all initially defined as Maxillaria sect. Trigonae. Sauvetrea can be easily distinguished from closely related Rhetinantha M.A.Blanco by the lip callus. During the revision of the materials stored in AMES we came across specimens collected by Vargas in Peru, which were initially identified by Schweinfurth as Maxillaria brachypetala Schltr. We compared Vargas's discovery with the protologue of the latter species and other Sauvetrea, but it does not fit the description of any genus representatives known so …

Liana Abundance And Diversity Increase With Rainfall Seasonality Along A Precipitation Gradient In Panama, Anthony J. Parolari, Kassandra Paul, Aaron H. Griffing, Richard Condit, Ronaldo Perez, Salomón Aguilar, Stefan A. Schnitzer
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In tropical regions, rainfall gradients often explain the abundance and distribution of plant species. For example, many tree and liana species adapted to seasonal drought are more abundant and diverse in seasonally-dry forests, characterized by long periods of seasonal water deficit. Mean annual precipitation (MAP) is commonly used to explain plant distributions across climate gradients. However, the relationship between MAP and plant distribution is often weak, raising the question of whether other seasonal precipitation patterns better explain plant distributions in seasonally-dry forests. In this study, we examine the relationship between liana abundance and multiple metrics of seasonal and annual rainfall …

A Reduced Computational Matrix Approach With Convergence Estimation For Solving Model Differential Equations Involving Specific Nonlinearities Of Quartic Type, Ömür Kivanç Kürkçü
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This study aims to efficiently solve model differential equations involving specific nonlinearities of quartic type by proposing a reduced computational matrix approach based on the generalized Mott polynomial. This method presents a reduced matrix expansion of the generalized Mott polynomial with the parameter-$\alpha$, matrix equations, and Chebyshev--Lobatto collocation points. The simplicity of the method provides fast computation while eliminating an algebraic system of nonlinear equations, which arises from the matrix equation. The method also scrutinizes the consistency of the solutions due to the parameter-$\alpha$. The oscillatory behavior of the obtained solutions on long time intervals is simulated via a coupled …

On Solvability Of Inverse Problem For One Equation Of Fourth Order, Aysel Ramazanova Telman Qizi, Yashar Mehreliyev Topush Oglu
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
The work is devoted to study the existence and uniqueness of the classical solution of the inverse boundary value problem of determining the lowest coefficient in one fourth order equation. The original problem is reduced to an equivalent problem. The existence and uniqueness of the integral equation are proved by means of the contraction mappings principle, and we obtained that this solution is unique for a boundary value problem. Further, using these facts, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the classical solution for this problem.

Solution Of Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations With Quadratic And Cubic Terms By Morgan-Voyce Matrix-Collocation Method, Mehmet Tarakçi, Mustafa Özel, Mehmet Sezer
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
Nonlinear differential equations have many applications in different science and engineering disciplines. However, a nonlinear differential equation cannot be solved analytically and so must be solved numerically. Thus, we aim to develop a novel numerical algorithm based on Morgan-Voyce polynomials with collocation points and operational matrix method to solve nonlinear differential equations. In the our proposed method, the nonlinear differential equations including quadratic and cubic terms having the initial conditions are converted to a matrix equation. In order to obtain the matrix equations and solutions for the selected problems, code was developed in MATLAB. The solution of this method for …

Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we deal with the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias (HUR) and Hyers-Ulam (HU) stability of Hadamard type fractional integral equations on compact intervals. The stability conditions are developed using a new generalized metric (GM) definition and the fixed point technique by motivating Wang and Lin Ulam's type stability of Hadamard type fractional integral equations. Filomat 2014; 28(7): 1323-1331. Moreover, our approach is efficient and ease in use than to the previously studied approaches. Finally, we give two examples to explain our main results.

Adaptive Modified Artificial Bee Colony Algorithms (Amabc) For Optimization Ofcomplex Systems, Rabi̇a Korkmaz Tan, Şebnem Bora
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Complex systems are large scale and involve numerous uncertainties, which means that such systems tend to be expensive to operate. Further, it is difficult to analyze systems of this kind in a real environment, and for this reason agent-based modeling and simulation techniques are used instead. Based on estimation methods, modeling and simulation techniques establish an output set against the existing input set. However, as the data set in a given complex systems becomes very large, it becomes impossible to use estimation methods to create the output set desired. Therefore, a new mechanism is needed to optimize data sets in …

An Improved Memetic Genetic Algorithm Based On A Complex Network As Asolution To The Traveling Salesman Problem, Hadi Mohammadi, Kamal Mirzaie, Mohammad Reza Mollakhalili Meybodi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A genetic algorithm (GA) is not a good option for finding solutions around in neighborhoods. The current study applies a memetic algorithm (MA) with a proposed local search to the mutation operator of a genetic algorithm in order to solve the traveling salesman problem (TSP). The proposed memetic algorithm uses swap, reversion and insertion operations to make changes in the solution. In the basic GA, unlike in the real world, the relationship between generations has not been considered. This gap is resolved using the proposed complex network to allow selection among possible solutions. The degree measure has been used for …

Gabor Filter-Based Localization Of Straight And Curved Needlesin 2d Ultrasound Images, Mert Kaya, Abdurrahman Enes Şenel, Özkan Bebek
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
2D ultrasound (US) is one of the most commonly used medical imaging devices for needle localization in biopsies. However, the produced images are low-resolution and contain an excessive number of artifacts, which makes the needle localization challenging. Image processing techniques can help resolve this issue. This paper presents a novel Gabor filter-based method for needle localization in 2D US images, which enhances the needle outline in the images while suppressing other structures. The scheme works in two stages: First, the Gabor filter is applied to the image, the needle insertion angle is estimated, and the needle trajectory is found using …

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the deadliest diseases which cannot be treated but can be kept under control in certain stages. COPD has five severities, including at-risk, mild, moderate, severe, and very severe stages. Diagnosis of COPD at early stages needs additional clinical tests for even experienced specialists. The study aims at detecting the severity of the COPD to start treatment for preventing the progression of the disease to the next levels. We analyzed 12-channel lung sounds with different COPD severities from RespiratoryDatabase@TR. The lung sounds were recorded from the clinical auscultation points from 41 patients on …

The sensor chamber plays a significant role in order to improve the performance of an electronic nose in terms of stability, repeatability, reproducibility, and sensitivity. Fluid dynamics simulations of six different configurations of 3D sensing chambers are presented to facilitate the efficient design of an electronic nose system comprising 64 sensor arrays. Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the gas (zero air) flow behaviour inside these chambers under steady-state conditions for velocities ranging from 0.1 to 2 m/s using ANSYS software. Design optimisation was performed in terms of area coverage, velocity, and mass fraction. The results show that the …
