Proletarian Modernism : Aesthetic Intervention In Naturalist Epistemology In Steinbeck, Wright And Mccullers, Kenji Kihara
Proletarian Modernism : Aesthetic Intervention In Naturalist Epistemology In Steinbeck, Wright And Mccullers, Kenji Kihara
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation explores three proletarian novels published at the end of the Depression era—John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, Richard Wright’s Native Son, and Carson McCullers’s The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter—in light of how their aesthetics complicates the inherited epistemology of literary naturalism in response to the changing political climates in the age of the Popular Front. Calling these texts “proletarian modernism,” I investigate how their aesthetics mediate the relations among Marxist ideas, political solidarity and the American value of individualism in an age when it became gradually difficult to fundamentally criticize capitalism and liberalism.
The Manifestation Of Stereotypic Repetitive Behaviors In Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In School Environments, Heather Anne Kurto
The Manifestation Of Stereotypic Repetitive Behaviors In Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In School Environments, Heather Anne Kurto
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects one in 59 children in the United States (CDC, 2018). ASD is defined as impairments in communication, socialization, and engagement in stereotypic and/or repetitive behaviors (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Much attention is given to the deficits in communication and socialization while stereotypic repetitive behaviors (SRBs) are the focus of interventions to extinguish these behaviors with little understanding of what role these behaviors play for people with ASD. The engagement in and function of SRBs is less prominent in the literature. Stereotypic repetitive behaviors vary in engagement, function and topography. This study examines how SRBs manifest …

A Comparative Spatial And Climate Analysis Of Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis And Human Babesiosis In New York State (2013-2018), Collin J. O'Connor
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) and human babesiosis are tick-borne diseases spread by Ixodes scapularis (the blacklegged or deer tick) and are the result of infection with Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia microti, respectively. In New York State (NYS), incidence rates of these diseases increased concordantly until around 2013, when rates of HGA began to increase more rapidly than human babesiosis, and the spatial extent of the diseases diverged. Surveillance data of tick-borne pathogens (2007 to 2018) and reported human cases of HGA (n=4,297) and human babesiosis (n=2,986) (2013 to 2018) from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) showed a …

"She Is Finally Free" : An Analysis Of Women's Pathologized Oppression And Reclamation Of The Abject In "The Yellow Wallpaper" And Midsommar, Diana Gem Schultz
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Women live and lead pathologized lives, as evidenced by past diagnoses of women’s disorders like “hysteria” and more modern issues surrounding beliefs in women’s hormones and biological inferiority. In analyzing women’s relationships with a wider male society and the role Kristevean abjection takes in patriarchal views on women’s minds and bodies, I aim to show how female characters in horror fiction – namely Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” and Ari Aster’s 2019 film, Midsommar – take that abject view and reclaim it for their own power. Through this reclamation, women are able to gain control from patriarchal …

Using Systems Archetypes And Generic Structures To Support Water Resource Management Studies : The Case Of Cropping Pattern Change In New Mexico State, Babak Bahaddin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A wide range of managerial problems are similar in nature, and yet they continuously appear in different forms and in different geographical locations. Compared to other sciences, it seems that in the field of management, managers have a hard time facing these similar problems. Part of this issues is caused by the extreme complexity of the systems and another part is caused by the lack of a universal language with which managers can communicate their lessons. This dissertation offers a set of tools that have been previously manufactured in systems science, and more specifically in System Dynamics.
Elemental Composition And Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Processed Seafood Products Using Atomic Spectrometric Techniques, Austin A. Roberts
Elemental Composition And Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Processed Seafood Products Using Atomic Spectrometric Techniques, Austin A. Roberts
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Arsenic (As) is a widely known toxic element that is highly ubiquitous and has been detected in soil, sediment, naturals waters, the atmosphere, and in organisms of the 5 kingdoms. The toxicity of As however, is dependent on the molecular form in which it takes as well as the route of exposure. For the general population, exposure to As mainly takes place via ingestion of food and water, which have led to numerous studies investigating As and it’s various species in these matrices. Seafood is one of the major sources of dietary exposure to As and has thus led to …
Biochemical And Chemical Methods Of Key Derivation For Cryptographic Ciphers, Leif K. Mcgoldrick
Biochemical And Chemical Methods Of Key Derivation For Cryptographic Ciphers, Leif K. Mcgoldrick
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Cryptography is a vital component of digital communication and digital data in general. The use of cryptography is necessary to support the veracity of data and to protect it from outside parties with malicious intent. Cryptography focuses on two main facets that are vital for this goal: data encryption and user authentication. Encryption protects the data by transforming it into an encrypted text that would not allow someone access without having or breaking the encryption method that was used to make it. User authentication is a multiple part process that allows for one to be able to identify oneself to …

Parsimonious Covariate Selection For Interval Censored Data, Yi Cui
Parsimonious Covariate Selection For Interval Censored Data, Yi Cui
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Interval censored outcomes widely arise in many clinical trials and observational studies. In many cases, subjects are only followed-up periodically. As a result, the event of interest is known only to occur within a certain interval. We provided a method to select the parsimonious set of covariates associated with the interval censored outcome. First, the iterative sure independence screening (ISIS) method was applied to all interval censored time points across subjects to simultaneously select a set of potentially important covariates; then multiple testing approaches were used to improve the selection accuracy through refining the selection criteria, i.e. determining a refined …
Increasing Performance Of Classifiers For Ssvep-Based Brain-Computer Interfaces Using Extension Methods, Ethan Douglas Webster
Increasing Performance Of Classifiers For Ssvep-Based Brain-Computer Interfaces Using Extension Methods, Ethan Douglas Webster
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) provide an alternative communication method that does not require standard physical mediums (speech, typing, etc.). These systems have been implemented to provide additional communication and control options for people with certain motor disabilities. Classification is an important part of BCI systems and consists of inferring user commands from brain activity. Supervised classification methods often achieve higher accuracy, but unsupervised classification methods are useful when training is not practical for the user. This thesis focuses on unsupervised classification algorithms used for a BCI speller application and presents extensions for two existing classifiers that improve classification accuracy and thus …

Making Good : World War I, Disability, And The Senses In American Rehabilitation, Evan Patrick Sullivan
Making Good : World War I, Disability, And The Senses In American Rehabilitation, Evan Patrick Sullivan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study looks at how disabled American soldier-patients and the US Army used the senses as tools of rehabilitation after the Great War. Contemporaries argued that, when the hundreds of thousands of American soldiers came home wounded or sick after the Great War, the men needed to make good. The phrase “making good” meant that sacrifice in the war was not enough, and veterans had to become socially and economically independent, and return to heterosexual relationships. In an effort to return to normalcy, the US Army relied on rehabilitation, which aimed to medically and socially re-integrate the men into society.
Utilizing Raman Spectroscopy And Chemometrics For Novel Medical Diagnostic Purposes, Nicole M. Ralbovsky
Utilizing Raman Spectroscopy And Chemometrics For Novel Medical Diagnostic Purposes, Nicole M. Ralbovsky
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Many problems exist within the myriad of currently employed diagnostic techniques. Further, an incredibly wide variety of procedures are used to identify an even greater number of diseases which exist in the world. There is a definite unmet clinical need to improve the diagnostic capabilities of these methods, including improving test sensitivity and specificity, objectivity and definitiveness, and reducing cost and how invasive a test is, with an interest in replacing multiple diagnostic methods with one powerful tool. That is, the development of a singular technique which can accurately and objectively diagnose a wide variety of diseases in a cost-effective …
The Dysregulation Of Circadian Rhythms And Its Relation To Hippocampal Neurodegenerative Disease, John Patrick Mccauley
The Dysregulation Of Circadian Rhythms And Its Relation To Hippocampal Neurodegenerative Disease, John Patrick Mccauley
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Circadian rhythms modulate body temperature, sleep-wake cycles and cognitive functions like learning and memory. Interestingly, patients suffering from neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimer’s disease and brain insults like traumatic brain injury experience dysregulated circadian rhythms and learning and memory deficiencies as a symptom. The core molecular machinery that establishes these rhythms relies on the activation of positive and negative transcriptional-translational feedback loops within the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Subordinate circadian oscillators distributed throughout the peripheral and central nervous system follow the rhythmic activity of the SCN. One of these, the hippocampus, is mostly involved in regulating memory formation and recall. Experimental …
Group Ii Introns : Evolution, Structure And Function, Xiaolong Dong
Group Ii Introns : Evolution, Structure And Function, Xiaolong Dong
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Group II introns are mobile, self-splicing ribozymes found in bacteria, archaea and eukaryotic organelles. They are widely believed to be the progenitors of the eukaryotic spliceosomal introns and retroelements. Yet many structural and evolutionary aspects of group II introns remain elusive. Indeed, while group II introns are the putative forerunners of spliceosomal introns in eukaryotes, they are notably absent in the nuclear genomes and a large portion of prokaryotes. Furthermore, although the architecture of a post-catalytic group II intron holoenzyme containing both the RNA and the bound intron encoded protein (IEP) has been solved by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), the interactions …
Detecting And Protecting Against Ai-Synthesized Faces, Yuezun Li
Detecting And Protecting Against Ai-Synthesized Faces, Yuezun Li
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The recent advances in deep learning and the availability of vast volume of online personal images and videos have drastically improved the reality of synthesized faces in images and videos. While there are interesting and creative applications of the AI face synthesis systems, they can also be weaponized, as it can create the illusions of a person's presence and activities that do not occur in reality, which results in serious political, social, financial, and legal consequences. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop effective method to expose the AI-synthesized faces. In this thesis, a set of our recent efforts …
The Guardian Of The Genome : Regulation Of The Enhancer Networks Governing The P53-Mediated Stress Response, Allison Catizone
The Guardian Of The Genome : Regulation Of The Enhancer Networks Governing The P53-Mediated Stress Response, Allison Catizone
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
After fertilization in vertebrates, cells work to build organs, tissues and begin to rapidly differentiate and proliferate. This process is the orchestration of finely tuned signals and perfectly timed gene expression patterns. The first step in gene expression, transcription, is governed by proteins known as transcription factors (TF). TFs are responsible for binding to DNA, altering chromatin structure, and driving activation of other genes based on the organism’s needs. Once the process of development is complete, organisms shift their resources to maintaining homeostasis. Humans regularly encounter outside stressors such as UV radiation, pollution, allergens, and drugs. Cells also accumulate mutations …
Statistical Fit And Factor Structure Of The Food-Life Questionnaire In Emerging Adult Undergraduate Students, Arielle Wolinsky
Statistical Fit And Factor Structure Of The Food-Life Questionnaire In Emerging Adult Undergraduate Students, Arielle Wolinsky
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The Food-Life Questionnaire (FLQ) is a psychometrically sound measure of beliefs and attitudes towards food that was initially developed and validated for use with a general adult population; however, the psychometric properties of the measure have yet to be examined in an emerging adult population. The constructs captured by the FLQ are particularly relevant in emerging adulthood, because it is a time of increased risk for the development of disordered eating attitudes and behaviors. Using data from a large, demographically diverse sample of emerging adult undergraduate students (n = 679), the current study evaluated the fit of the original five-factor …

Traditional Latinx Gender Role Norms And Exposure To Sexual Health Programming For Latinx Men Who Have Sex With Men (Lmsm), Austin Connor Eklund
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Latinx men who have sex with men (LMSM) are at significantly greater risk for HIV infection than their non-Latinx peers. One important way of helping prevent the spread of HIV is exposing vulnerable populations to HIV prevention programming. Little is known about what factors predict exposure to HIV prevention programming for LMSM. Given extant links between traditional masculine gender role norms and health outcomes, this study sought to examine possible relations between constructs of machismo, caballerismo, and heterosexual self-presentation, along with demographic covariates, and exposure to HIV prevention programming among LMSM. Among the 530 LMSM in our sample, 89% reported …
Development Of Small Molecule Antibiotics Against A Conserved Rna Gene Regulatory Element In Gram-Positive Bacteria, Ville Yrjö Petteri Väre
Development Of Small Molecule Antibiotics Against A Conserved Rna Gene Regulatory Element In Gram-Positive Bacteria, Ville Yrjö Petteri Väre
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Bacterial infections and the rise of antibiotic resistance, especially multidrug resistant strains, have generated a clear need for discovery of novel therapeutics. Most antibiotics in use today are derivatives of previous antibiotics to which resistance mechanisms already exist, and traditionally they have a single target: either a protein or rRNA. Gram-positive bacteria regulate the expression of several essential genes or operons using a mechanism called the T-box. The T-box is a structurally conserved riboswitch-like gene regulator in the 5’-untranslated region (UTR) of numerous essential genes of Gram-positive bacteria. T-boxes are stabilized by cognate, unacylated tRNA ligands, allowing the formation of …

Construction Of A Yeast-Based Rescue System For Screening Of Effects Of Pharmacological Agents On Twik Channels, Mosi Lin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Two-pore domain potassium (K2P) channels conduct leak or background K+ currents, which primarily maintain resting membrane potential and regulate cellular excitability. Among the TWIK subfamily of K2P channels, TWIK-1 (K2P1) and TWIK-2 (K2P6) channels are characterized as weak inwardly rectifying K+ channels, whereas TWIK-3 (K2P7) channels do not produce detectable currents in heterologous expression systems. Although K2P channels were first identified in the 1990s, only a few K2P-specific pharmacological agents are available. In this study, I developed a yeast-based rescue system to screen the effects of pharmacological agents on TWIK channels. First, I employed K+-uptake-deficient SGY1528 yeasts that K+ transporters …
Nmr Based Studies Of Interactions Between Ribosomes And Glycolytic Enzymes, Devin Bryan Busch
Nmr Based Studies Of Interactions Between Ribosomes And Glycolytic Enzymes, Devin Bryan Busch
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Recent research has been performed to better understand what implications ribosome-mediated quinary interactions have on cellular growth. These studies demonstrated that ribosomal binding to enzymes, and their cofactors, can cause significant changes in their enzymatic activity leading to a proposal that ribosome surfaces play a greater regulatory in cellular growth than thought of in the past. To widen the scope of investigations performed on these ribosomal-mediated quinary interactions, the regulatory enzymes associated in glycolysis (hexokinase, phosphofructokinase, and pyruvate kinase) were titrated into a solution of 70S E. coli ribosome and analyzed via 1H-15N-HSQC NMR. The perturbations of the peaks associated …

The basal ganglia are a collection of subcortical nuclei responsible for action selection. The striatum is the primary input of the basal ganglia and forms two distinct feedback loops with the motor cortex. Within the striatum, projection neurons receive cortical inputs via glutamatergic synapses, and modulation via cholinergic synapses and dopaminergic projections. These projection neurons create two separate pathways to the principal output of the basal ganglia, the substantia nigra pars reticulata. The striatum uses these two pathways to filter cortical motor inputs and integrate those inputs with dopaminergic motor and reward inputs to determine action selection output. The GABAergic …

Haemoparasite Infection And Immunogenetic Diversity In A Clade Of North American Songbirds, Naima Starkloff
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The persistence of an organism in a particular habitat is mediated by a complex interplay of abiotic and biotic interactions. These interactions become especially complicated for a vector-transmitted parasite as its persistence relies on its ability to colonize both ectothermic and endothermic host organisms. Host factors, rather than environmental factors, have been highlighted as key predictors of the diversity and prevalence of avian haemosporidians (malaria parasites and relatives) globally. The range of a parasite is limited by its host specificity as well as the community of hosts present. In addition, as haemosporidian infections typically have negative fitness consequences on hosts, …

Development Of Dual Functional Dna/Rna Nanostructures For Drug Delivery, Vibhav Amit Valsangkar
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In addition to the traditional biochemical functions, DNA and RNA have been increasingly studied as building blocks for the formation of various 2D and 3D nanostructures. DNA has emerged as a versatile building block for programmable self-assembly. DNA-based nanostructures have been widely applied in biosensing, bioimaging, drug delivery, molecular computation and macromolecular scaffolding. A variety of strategies have been developed to functionalize these nanostructures. The major advantage is that DNA is a very stable molecule and its base-pairing properties can be easily utilized to control and program the formation of desired nanostructures. In addition, some of these DNA/RNA nanostructures have …
