New Precipitation Is Scarce In Deep Soils: Findings From 47 Forest Plots Spanning Switzerland, Emily I. Burt, Scott T. Allen, Sabine Braun, Simon Tresch, James W. Kirchner, Gregory R. Goldsmith

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

As precipitation infiltrates into soils, it can recharge them, displace previously stored waters, or bypass already-filled pores. Using 3,697 δ2H and δ18O measurements of water collected nearly monthly over >3 years in 47 forest plots across Switzerland, we present a systematic investigation of the controls on mobile soil water transport. We quantified the lags and damping of water as it percolates downward using young water fraction analysis (Fyw), and the fractions of soil water composed by precipitation that fell within the previous month (new water fractions, Fnew). The Fnew of water sampled in surface soils ranged …

Correlations Between Hemodynamics And Radiomic Features In Thrombosed Intracranial Aneurysms, Zonghan Lyu, Andres Gudino, Navami Shenoy, Carlos Dier, Elena Sagues, Jingfeng Jiang, Edgar A. Samaniego Aug 2025

Correlations Between Hemodynamics And Radiomic Features In Thrombosed Intracranial Aneurysms, Zonghan Lyu, Andres Gudino, Navami Shenoy, Carlos Dier, Elena Sagues, Jingfeng Jiang, Edgar A. Samaniego

Michigan Tech Publications

Purpose: Evaluating intracranial aneurysm (IA) rupture risk is essential for guiding management. Although intrasaccular thrombosis (IST) is less common, it can contribute to aneurysm growth, mass effect, and rupture. Aneurysm wall enhancement (AWE) on high-resolution MRI (HR-MRI) offers valuable insight into IST and IA progression. Using radiomics, we extracted spatial information of the aneurysm wall to characterize AWE. This study aimed to explore correlations between radiomics-based AWE profiles and gross hemodynamic parameters, integrating imaging and flow dynamics to better understand IST. Methods: Radiomic analysis was conducted on a cohort of 3T HR-MRI scans from IA with IST. Three-dimensional vascular reconstructions …

Evaluating The Toxicity Of Electronic Cigarette Aerosols For Firsthand And Secondhand Exposure Under Different Device Operating Conditions, Kashala Fabrice Kapiamba, Hsin Yin Chuang, Weixing Hao, Ta Chun Lin, Lung Chi Chen, Yue-Wern Huang, Yang Wang Aug 2025

Evaluating The Toxicity Of Electronic Cigarette Aerosols For Firsthand And Secondhand Exposure Under Different Device Operating Conditions, Kashala Fabrice Kapiamba, Hsin Yin Chuang, Weixing Hao, Ta Chun Lin, Lung Chi Chen, Yue-Wern Huang, Yang Wang

The rapid proliferation of electronic cigarettes (ECs) has raised significant concerns about their potential health effects on both users and bystanders. This study systematically investigates the impact of EC aerosol exposure on human alveolar epithelial cells (A549), considering variations in device parameters, nicotine concentration, and exposure type. Using a gravity-based air–liquid interface exposure system, we assessed cytotoxicity and epithelial barrier integrity by measuring cell viability and transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER). Our results indicate that EC aerosol exposure significantly reduces cell viability and disrupts monolayer integrity in a dose- and device-dependent manner. Notably, VUSE (pod-type) exposure led to a 16% decrease …

Intravital Optical Imaging Of Peripheral Nerve Injury Response, Igor Luzhansky Aug 2025

Intravital Optical Imaging Of Peripheral Nerve Injury Response, Igor Luzhansky

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Peripheral nerve injuries in animal models require imaging approaches that can reveal the dynamic, multiscale process of regeneration over time without disrupting repair mechanisms. Traditional methods lack the ability to visualize cellular behavior and matrix remodeling continuously. We present an imaging technique based on an implantable nerve window and fluorescent labeling, enabling high-resolution, longitudinal cellular-scale observation of peripheral nerve regeneration in living mice. We first evaluated near-infrared fluorophore-conjugated fibrin as a transient marker for early regenerative tissue within nerve guidance conduits. Imaging performed upon surgical re-exposure of the nerve revealed the incorporation of fibrin into early-stage regenerative cables, with gradual …
