Nutrition And Health Status Of Hemodialysis Patients In Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tanjina Rahman
Nutrition And Health Status Of Hemodialysis Patients In Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tanjina Rahman
Wayne State University Dissertations
Methods to identify patients at risk for End stage renal disease (ESRD) are a high priority in Bangladesh, where kidney transplants/dialysis options are limited and costly. Every year, 35,000 to 40,000 people reach ESRD in Bangladesh, but currently available facilities can hardly accommodate only 9000 to 10,000 new patients with twice weekly dialysis and the remaining 66% have no access to any kind of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in the form of dialysis or transplantation. Nutrition is an important factor in maintaining good health of hemodialysis patients. However, data on nutritional status of Bangladeshi dialysis patients is limited and is …

The Effects Of Postpartum Depression, Acculturative Stress, And Social Support On Mother-Infant Bonding Among U.S. Immigrant Women Of Arabic Descent, Darin Mansor Mathkor
Wayne State University Dissertations
Purpose and Background/Significance: The transition from “woman” to “mother” is a significant life event and can be extremely stressful when merged with the transition from ‘local’ to ‘immigrant’. The development of mother-infant bonding is considered a critical process in the postpartum period. Immigrant women have higher rates of PPD compared with women in their native countries. Among the general population, PPD is strongly associated with lower quality mother-infant bonding. Social support can play a central role in lowering the levels of PPD, and may contribute to higher quality of mother-infant bonding. Moreover, limited data suggests that acculturative stress is found …

Low- And High-Drag Intermittencies In Turbulent Channel Flows, Rishav Agrawal, Henry C.-H. Ng, Ethan A. Davis, Jae Sung Park, Michael D. Graham, David J.C. Dennis, Robert J. Poole
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Recent direct numerical simulations (DNS) and experiments in turbulent channel flow have found intermittent low- and high-drag events in Newtonian fluid flows, at Reτ = uτh/ν between 70 and 100, where uτ, h and ν are the friction velocity, channel half-height and kinematic viscosity, respectively. These intervals of low-drag and high-drag have been termed “hibernating” and “hyperactive”, respectively, and in this paper, a further investigation of these intermittent events is conducted using experimental and numerical techniques. For experiments, simultaneous measurements of wall shear stress and velocity are carried out in a channel flow facility using hot-film anemometry (HFA) and laser …

With digitization and data sharing initiatives underway over the last 15 years, an important need has been prioritizing specimens to digitize. Because duplicate specimens are shared among herbaria in exchange and gift programs, we investigated the extent to which unique biogeographic data are held in small herbaria vs. these data being redundant with those held by larger institutions. We evaluated the unique specimen contributions that small herbaria make to biogeographic understanding at county, locality, and temporal scales.

Background and Aims In a range of plant species, the distribution of individual mean fecundity is skewed and dominated by a few highly fecund individuals. Larger plants produce greater seed crops, but the exact nature of the relationship between size and reproductive patterns is poorly understood. This is especially clear in plants that reproduce by exhibiting synchronized quasi-periodic variation in fruit production, a process called masting.
Methods We investigated covariation of plant size and fecundity with individual-plant-level masting patterns and seed predation in 12 mast-seeding species: Pinus pinea, Astragalus scaphoides, Sorbus aucuparia, Quercus ilex, Q. humilis …
High‐ And Low‐Molecular‐Weight Chitosan Act As Adjuvants During Single‐Dose Influenza A Virus Protein Vaccination Through Distinct Mechanisms, Anna T. Lampe, Eric Farris, Deborah M. Brown, Angela K. Pannier
High‐ And Low‐Molecular‐Weight Chitosan Act As Adjuvants During Single‐Dose Influenza A Virus Protein Vaccination Through Distinct Mechanisms, Anna T. Lampe, Eric Farris, Deborah M. Brown, Angela K. Pannier
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
The investigation of new adjuvants is essential for the development of efficacious vaccines. Chitosan (CS), a derivative of chitin, has been shown to act as an adjuvant, improving vaccine‐induced immune responses. However, the effect of CS molecular weight (MW) on this adjuvanticity has not been investigated, despite MW having been shown to impact CS biological properties. Here, two MW variants of CS were in- vestigated for their ability to enhance vaccine‐elicited immune responses in vitro and in vivo, using a single‐dose influenza A virus (IAV) protein vaccine model. Both low‐ molecular‐weight (LMW) and high‐molecular‐weight (HMW) CS‐induced interferon regulatory factor pathway …
Genome-Wide Association Study To Identify Genetic Loci Associated With Gastrointestinal Nematode Resistance In Katahdin Sheep, G. M. Becker, K. M. Davenport, Joan M. Burke, Ronald M. Lewis, J. E. Miller, J. L.M. Morgan, D. R. Notter, B. M. Murdoch
Genome-Wide Association Study To Identify Genetic Loci Associated With Gastrointestinal Nematode Resistance In Katahdin Sheep, G. M. Becker, K. M. Davenport, Joan M. Burke, Ronald M. Lewis, J. E. Miller, J. L.M. Morgan, D. R. Notter, B. M. Murdoch
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes has previously been shown to be a moderately heritable trait in some breeds of sheep, but the mechanisms of resistance are not well understood. Selection for resistance currently relies upon faecal egg counts (FEC), blood packed cell volumes and FAMACHA visual indicator scores of anaemia. Identifying genomic markers associated with disease resistance would potentially improve the selection process and provide a more reliable means of classifying and understanding the biology behind resistant and susceptible sheep. A GWAS was conducted to identify possible genetic loci associated with resistance to Haemonchus contortus in Katahdin sheep. Forty animals were …

Genetic Structure And Admixture In Sheep From Terminal Breeds In The United States, Kimberly M. Davenport, C. Heimke, S. D. Mc Kay, J. W. Thorne, Ronald M. Lewis, Todd Taylor, B. M. Murdoch
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Selection for performance in diverse production settings has resulted in variation across sheep breeds worldwide. Although sheep are an important species to the United States, the current genetic relationship among many terminal sire breeds is not well characterized. Suffolk, Hampshire, Shropshire and Oxford (terminal) and Rambouillet (dual purpose) sheep (n = 248) sampled from different flocks were genotyped using the Applied Biosystems Axiom Ovine Genotyping Array (50K), and additional Shropshire sheep (n = 26) using the Illumina Ovine SNP50 BeadChip. Relationships were investigated by calculating observed heterozygosity, inbreeding coefficients, eigenvalues, pairwise Wright’s FST estimates and an identity by state matrix. …

A Synergism Between Dimethyl Trisulfide And Methyl Thiolacetate In Attracting Carrion-Frequenting Beetles Demonstrated By Use Of A Chemically-Supplemented Minimal Trap, Stephen T. Trumbo, John Dicapua Iii

Volatile organic compounds derived from microbes recruit insects to carrion, shaping community assembly and ecological succession. The importance of individual volatiles and interactions between volatiles are difficult to assess in the field because of (1) the myriad compounds from decomposing animals, and (2) the likelihood that complex component blends are important for the final approach to carrion. On the assumption that searching insects may use simpler volatile cues to orient at a distance, we employed a chemically-supplemented minimal trap that uses test chemicals to attract from a distance and a minimal carrion bait to induce trap entry. Traps supplemented with …

Fish populations with broad age distributions are expected to have higher reproductive capacity than age-truncated populations because of the disproportionate contributions of older fish. Harvest slot limits, an expected means of ameliorating age truncation, are modeled for Tautog Tautoga onitis in an overfished population subunit that is experiencing overfishing. Tautog, currently managed by a 40 cm minimum size limit (MSL), is a candidate species for slots because it is relatively long-lived, slow-growing, with low discard mortality. We evaluated changes in biomass and abundance-at-age relative to management with the current MSL regulations using a forward population simulation model for four slots: …

Key findings
- There was relatively strong support for slot limits, and roughly comparable support for status quo management, among anglers fishing for Tautog in Long Island Sound.
- Respondents were not in favor of a total moratorium on fishing for Tautog.
- Providing survey respondents information on how different management scenarios will affect fishing in the future had little detectable impact on fishing preferences.
- Respondents expected to fish less in the future if a wide slot limit is imposed or if status quo management is maintained, but expected no change in effort if a narrow slot limit is imposed.
- Changes in regulations …

Purpose. Advances in virtual care technology have made healthcare more convenient and accessible. The goal of this study was to elucidate current patient portal behaviors by examining the pattern of time and service type use of patients, via data provided by access logs within electronic health records, to increase communication and care coordination through online healthcare portals. Methods. We conducted a retrospective study of patients in an academic healthcare center over a 5-year period using access log records in electronic health records (EHR). Dimensionality reduction analysis was applied to group portal functionalities into more interpretable and meaningful feature domains, followed …
Ciliogenesis And Cilia-Mediated Signaling In Cardiac Valve Development And Disease, Diana Bridget Fulmer
Ciliogenesis And Cilia-Mediated Signaling In Cardiac Valve Development And Disease, Diana Bridget Fulmer
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) are serious heart conditions that affect a combined 3-4% of the world population. These diseases carry high risk for secondary complications including arrhythmia, blood regurgitation, and sudden cardiac death. Often, valve diseases are heritable and have complex origins that are not fully understood. The lack of knowledge about valve disease causation likely contributes to the absence of non-surgical treatment options for this patient population. Recent work by our lab and others has demonstrated a link between defects in primary cilia and the development of heart valve disease in humans. Primary cilia …
Individual Differences In Cocaine-Conditioned Avoidance Behavior And Implication For Addiction Vulnerability, Maya Eid
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Decades of studies have examined the mechanisms by which drugs of abuse produce strong rewarding effects that drive addictive behavior. However, these drugs also produce aversive effects that are less well understood, but that also strongly influence drug-seeking, and may contribute to individual variation in addiction liability. For example, individuals with particularly strong aversive responses to nicotine or alcohol may be less likely to acquire smoking or drinking habits, with these protective effects arising from specific biological differences in nicotinic receptor function or alcohol metabolism, respectively. These aversive effects can also be exploited therapeutically, as in widely available treatments for …

Determination Of N-Linked Glycosylation Changes In Hepatocellular Carcinoma And The Associated Glycoproteins For Enhanced Biomarker Discovery And Therapeutic Targets, Connor Allen West
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
With hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remaining as the fifth most common cancer in the world, causing more than 700,000 deaths annually, the need for reliable, early stage diagnoses and preventive treatments is crucial. While serum glycoproteins are hepatic in origin, making them excellent targets for HCC biomarkers, they can originate from both cancerous and non-cancerous regions and direct analysis of cancerous tissue itself is lacking. To counteract this, I hypothesized that direct tissue analysis combined with proteomic analysis could be utilized to identify more potential targets specific to HCC for early detection. This was done with a primary focus on glycosylation—as …
Inhibition Of Penicillin-Binding Protein 2: Toward New Therapeutics For Antimicrobial-Resistant Gonorrhea, Jonathan M. Turner
Inhibition Of Penicillin-Binding Protein 2: Toward New Therapeutics For Antimicrobial-Resistant Gonorrhea, Jonathan M. Turner
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Gonorrhea is the second most common sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the United States, with nearly 600,000 cases reported in 2018 by the Centers for Disease Control. Alarmingly, the causative agent Neisseria gonorrhoeae has developed resistance to a number of antimicrobials over the last century. With limited options remaining, the CDC now recommends dual therapy with ceftriaxone and azithromycin to decrease the likelihood of resistance development. However, strains with combined cephalosporin and macrolide resistance have now emerged, raising concerns of a post-antibiotic future in which untreatable gonorrhea would impose enormous human and economic cost. The discovery and development of novel …
