Hyracoidea From The Middle Miocene Hominoid Locality Of Paşalar (Nw Turkey), Martin Pickford, Serdar Mayda, Berna Alpagut, Fatma Arzu Demi̇rel, Ayşegül Şarbak, Tümel Tanju Kaya Jan 2020

Hyracoidea From The Middle Miocene Hominoid Locality Of Paşalar (Nw Turkey), Martin Pickford, Serdar Mayda, Berna Alpagut, Fatma Arzu Demi̇rel, Ayşegül Şarbak, Tümel Tanju Kaya

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Previously available samples of Hyracoidea from Paşalar (MN 6, Middle Miocene), Turkey, have indicated the presence of Pliohyracidae at the site, but the material was too scanty for confident identification. The single upper molar, an upper molar ectoloph fragment and an ascending ramal fragment were too uninformative for determining the taxonomic identity of the fossils, although several names have been proposed in the literature. Additional fossils collected from Paşalar include upper and lower premolars, which help to tie down the affinities of this hyracoid. They are attributed to the genus Prohyrax, but were not named specifically, even though they are …

Assessment Of Element Concentrations In Surface Sediment Samples Fromsığacık Bay (Eastern Aegean), Özde Bakak, Fi̇li̇z Küçüksezgi̇n, Fai̇k Erdeni̇z Özel

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Concentrations of Al, Fe, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Hg, and organic carbon, and grain size distribution were investigated in the surface sediments of 7 sampling stations in the Sığacık Bay (western Anatolia) in December 2016. At all of the sampling stations, the concentrations of Pb, Ni, Cr, and As were higher than the average shale values. The highest concentrations of Pb, Cu, Zn, As, and Hg were found at stations near Doğanbey Cape. The possible sources of pollution were evaluated using several parameters: the enrichment factor (Ef), contamination factor (Cf), and contamination degree (Cd). The Ef …

Review Of Late Cretaceous Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide Mineralization In The Easternpontides, Ne Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Revan Jan 2020

Review Of Late Cretaceous Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide Mineralization In The Easternpontides, Ne Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Revan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The production of Cu-Zn from volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the eastern Pontides began in the early 1900s, with the exploitation of high-grade ores scattered across the district. The district still possesses economically important blind VMS and associated sulfide deposits. Careful descriptive documentation of the typical features of these VMS ores illustrated the geological characteristics that are important in identifying ore localities and can be used to define exploration targets. The eastern Pontide VMS deposits are examples of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits that exhibit many of the characteristics typical of bimodal-felsic-type VMS mineralization. Nearly all known VMS deposits in …

Welcoming Newcomers And Becoming Native To A Place_ Arendt’S Polis And The City Beautiful Of Detroit.Pdf, Jules Simon Jan 2020

Welcoming Newcomers And Becoming Native To A Place_ Arendt’S Polis And The City Beautiful Of Detroit.Pdf, Jules Simon

Departmental Papers (Philosophy)

My goal, in interpreting Arendt’s analyses of the polis – both modern and ancient – is to conceptualize the role that ‘healthy’ public spaces can play in modern cities. What distinguishes my interpretation of her work is how I integrate her seminal conception of a philosophy of natality in the constellation of elemental concepts: labor, work, and action, as a way to understand the rise and fall of Detroit and to set the possible horizon for its reincarnation as a ‘sustainable’ and flourishing city beautiful. For me, it is precisely this conceptualization, as a philosophy of natality, that enables us …

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Its Pathogenesis, Management, Complications, And Potential Cures, Caitlin Gallagher Jan 2020

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Its Pathogenesis, Management, Complications, And Potential Cures, Caitlin Gallagher

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

Type 1 diabetes is an endocrine disease which develops because of an autoimmune response that targets and degrades insulin-producing islet cells in the pancreas. The destruction of beta cells results in an inability to produce insulin, a hormone that is essential in the regulation of blood glucose concentration. The incidence of type 1 diabetes continues to increase in the United States. The pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes is influenced by several favors including autoimmunity, genetic predispositions, and environmental insults. The disease typically manifests as a combination of symptoms, most commonly polydipsia, polyphagia, and polyuria. Documented symptoms, elevated blood glucose levels, …

Effect Of Urban Green Space On Urban Populations., Jack Mensinger Jan 2020

Effect Of Urban Green Space On Urban Populations., Jack Mensinger

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

As the world's population continues to urbanize, population density increases and people endure the ever-increasing speed of the urban environment. The need to focus on mental and physical health becomes ever more critical as daily routines may not fulfill urban residents' basic needs. The bulk of work studying the relationship between green space, mental, and physical wellness, have had a narrow scope in their assessment of the benefits of green space. Previous studies focused either on the human interaction or the spaces utilities as a corridor and a habitat for flora and fauna. We utilized a systematic literature review to …

Diatom Morphology In Light Of A Changing Climate: A Focus On Aulacoseira Crenulate, Brighid Welchans

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Fossilized diatoms are arguably the most vital proxy record utilized in paleolimnology. Diatoms are unicellular microalgae that are the basis of countless food webs, are invaluable bioindicators, and generate nearly a quarter of global net primary productivity. Diatoms are affected by a variety of environmental factors but there is relatively little research on how environmental conditions impact diatom valve morphology, and in particular whether there is a correlation between incoming light and diatom pore morphology. This report focuses on the Amazon lowland lake Garzacocha, and analyzes the relationship between light levels and the corresponding size of Aulacoseira crenulata pores. We …

Impact Of Dietary Patterns On Health Outcomes In African American Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients, Dina Angela Tallman Jan 2020

Impact Of Dietary Patterns On Health Outcomes In African American Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients, Dina Angela Tallman

Wayne State University Dissertations

In the United States, African Americans (AA) suffer a disproportionate burden of ESRD, accounting for 35% of all dialysis patients, and are 3.7 times more likely to progress to ESRD than whites. This increase in CKD risk is partially attributed to higher rates of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease. Paradoxically, once on hemodialysis, AA have a survival advantage over whites, likely due to multiple factors including nutritional status, inflammation, psychosocial status, and genetic variation.

Although both the dialysis procedure and pharmacological treatments are effective at reducing the uremic toxin load, HD patients are still encouraged to adhere to strict …

Social Media Based Algorithmic Clinical Decision Support Learning From Behavioral Predispositions, Radhika V. Medury Jan 2020

Social Media Based Algorithmic Clinical Decision Support Learning From Behavioral Predispositions, Radhika V. Medury

Doctoral Dissertations

Behavioral disorders are disabilities characterized by an individual’s mood, thinking, and social interactions. The commonality of behavioral disorders amongst the United States population has increased in the last few years, with an estimated 50% of all Americans diagnosed with a behavioral disorder at some point in their lifetime. AttentionDeficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is one such behavioral disorder that is a severe public health concern because of its high prevalence, incurable nature, significant impact on domestic life, and peer relationships. Symptomatically, in theory, ADHD is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Access to providers who can offer diagnosis and treat the disorder varies …

Biology is unique from other science disciplines in that concepts taught in core classes can inform our student’s understanding of sex and gender. A biology major encounters lessons on sex determination, sexual reproduction, and sex characteristics in their courses. The language used in these units matters. It is imperative that educators consider how the language, examples, and content that we use in classrooms drive (or not) inclusivity for gender- and sexuality-diverse (GSD) (aka LGBTQ+) individuals. We chose to analyze four college-level human anatomy/physiology (AP) textbooks for GSD population inclusivity. We adopted a queer theory framework to critically examine how sex, …

Crispr-Cas9 Editing Of Nitrate Transporter Gene, Um03849, In Ustilago Maydis, Luke A. Schroeder, Sunita Khanal, Michael H. Perlin

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

Ustilago maydis, the basidiomycete smut-fungus, can infect and cause tumors in corn plants. For this, mating between compatible haploid cells is important. The mating and subsequent dimorphic transition in U. maydis require starvation for nutrients such as nitrogen, in addition to pheromone-receptor interactions between compatible partners. In this research, the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technique was used to create INDEL mutations (sequence insertion or deletion) in the nitrate transporter gene, um03849, in U. maydis. The gene was edited in mating compatible haploid strains 1/2 and 2/9. The phenotypes were characterized for the um03849 mutants as to growth ability, mating …

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder characterized by faulty ion channels and result in thick mucus accumulation, especially in lungs. Mucus buildup provides ideal conditions for bacterial infections. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is the second most prevalent bacterium isolated from people with CF and has a high clinical importance. Most CF pathogens form biofilms which make treatment of infections difficult. Biofilms are clusters of cells attached to a surface enclosed in a structured matrix. These structures are a means to provide shelter for bacteria from the environment, especially antibiotics and the immune system. PA alone can form these biofilms, but …

Conspecifics And Familiar Odors Alter Movement Patterns In A Land Snail, Cepaea Hortensis, Madeleine Shelton, Jeeva Rathnaweera, Perri Eason Jan 2020

Conspecifics And Familiar Odors Alter Movement Patterns In A Land Snail, Cepaea Hortensis, Madeleine Shelton, Jeeva Rathnaweera, Perri Eason

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

In some animals, unfamiliarity with a place and the presence of a conspecific can change movement patterns, often altering individuals’ routes, exploration, and the directions taken. Patterns such as these can affect individual survival, and thus might be present across a wide range of taxa, although mostly vertebrates have been studied. We used a native Kentucky land snail (white-lipped globe snail, Cepaea hortensis) to investigate how snail size, familiarity and the recent presence of a conspecific affect movement of snails in a novel environment. We also tested whether presence of a familiar smell influenced movement on a 25X25 cm …

Risk Assessment And Flight Decisions In Adult Versus Juvenile Squirrels (Sciurus Carolinensis), Alex Haydon, Jeeva Rathnaweera, Perri Eason Jan 2020

Risk Assessment And Flight Decisions In Adult Versus Juvenile Squirrels (Sciurus Carolinensis), Alex Haydon, Jeeva Rathnaweera, Perri Eason

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

One way to quantify a prey’s response to a predator is by flight initiation distance (FID), the distance between a predator and prey at the moment the prey flees. As perceived risk from a predator increases, FID increases. Juvenile animals typically flee from approaching threats sooner than do adults because they have less able risk assessment. However, our observations suggested juvenile squirrels might use a different tactic: foraging near refuges. We first tested whether age affected squirrels’ FID in response to an approaching human on the UofL campus, where squirrels experience high levels of interactions with humans from an early …

The Coordinate Regulation Of Digestive Enzymes In The Pitchers Of Nepenthes Ventricosa, Zephyr Anne Lenninger Jan 2020

The Coordinate Regulation Of Digestive Enzymes In The Pitchers Of Nepenthes Ventricosa, Zephyr Anne Lenninger

Honors Program Theses

Many species of plants have adopted carnivory as a way to obtain supplementary nutrients from otherwise nutrient deficient environments. One such species, Nepenthes ventricosa, is characterized by a pitcher shaped passive trap. This trap is filled with a digestive fluid that consists of many different digestive enzymes, the majority of which seem to have been recruited from pathogen resistance systems. The present study attempted to determine whether the introduction of a prey stimulus will coordinately up-regulate the enzymatic expression of a chitinase and a protease while also identifying specific chitinases that are expressed by Nepenthes ventricosa. We were able to …

Faculty of Management & Hospitality (THEi)

Quantifying the training content within elite professional soccer and analysis of tapering strategies has gained huge interest in recent times within the literature in order to maximise player performance. The formatting of training load tapering (TLT) appears to differ depending on the management in charge and microcycle coaching philosophy. The primary of this investigation was to analyse 9-weekly microcycles used and quantify the tapering strategy utilised through positional differences within a Chinese Superleague soccer team. Twenty-eight (n = 28) elite male professional soccer players participated within the study (± SD, age: 26.7 ± 3.7 years; body height: 181 ± 6.5 …

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Agricultural use of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), a byproduct of sugar clarification process, as a possible source of nutrients and pest and disease control in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris.) needs a careful examination of the risk and benefit assessment at various levels of management and production. A series of controlled environment studies were conducted in Scottsbluff, NE, to assess the 1) effect of PCC on root aphids in sugar beet, and 2) risk of the weed kochia spreading by applying PCC to agricultural land and its chemical control strategy, by conducting various dose-response studies. A replicated lab study …

A Democratic Salvation, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2020

A Democratic Salvation, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Over the centuries, many religious thinkers — precisely because they are religious thinkers — have put a premium on intellectual attainment as a prerequisite for salvation. This has sometimes yielded an elitism or snobbishness that is utterly foreign to the teachings of the Savior. The Gospel as taught in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints values education and knowledge, certainly. But not unduly. Intellectuals, while heartily welcome among the Saints and, when faithful, much appreciated for their potential contributions to the Church, have no claim on any special status in the Kingdom simply because of their (real or …

The Character And Knowledge Of Mary, The Mother Of Christ, A. Keith Thompson Jan 2020

The Character And Knowledge Of Mary, The Mother Of Christ, A. Keith Thompson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Virgin Mary is arguably the archetype of the virtuous woman and even the divine feminine on earth, but we know very little about her. She is remembered in Christianity in a variety of ways including with cathedrals built in her honor. Though many seek her intercession when they pray, that does not seem to accord with Luke’s account of her self- effacing and private character. This article considers what Latter-day Saints know about Mary from the scriptures, distinct from others of Christian faith who seek to honor her in different ways. That discussion also includes surmise as to what …
