Change The Environment; Change The Child, Theresa M. Sabo Jan 2020

Change The Environment; Change The Child, Theresa M. Sabo

MOT Student Capstones

Children that have been exposed in utero to illicit drug use by their mothers is a growing problem in society. These children enter the early childhood education system with biological changes to their brains that affect their ability to learn and engage effectively with others. They present with a wide variety of behaviors that they may or may not be able to control. Often these children are labeled as just not trying. An evidenced-based PowerPoint presentation named Change the Environment; Change the Child was developed to provide early childhood educators a better understanding of this population's needs and of interventions …

Apopka Insect Field Guide, Sarah Parker Jan 2020

Apopka Insect Field Guide, Sarah Parker

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

For my master's project I created a printable insect field guide specific to my area for use by the local elementary and middle schools. My property is located near both Lakeville Elementary School and Piedmont Lakes Middle School, therefore insects collected in my garden should closely approximate the insects that could potentially be seen at either school. A targeted insect guide will help facilitate any number of observational activities and may encourage the schools to plant insect friendly vegetation to increase their abundance of insects. My goal is for this teaching tool to encourage local teachers to include insect education …

A Corepressor Participates In Lexa-Independent Regulation Of Error-Prone Polymerases In Acinetobacter, Janelle M. Hare, Alison N. Grice, Megan A. Peterson Jan 2020

A Corepressor Participates In Lexa-Independent Regulation Of Error-Prone Polymerases In Acinetobacter, Janelle M. Hare, Alison N. Grice, Megan A. Peterson

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The DNA damage response of the multidrug-resistant pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii, which induces mutagenic UmuD′2C error-prone polymerases, differs from that of many bacteria. Acinetobacter species lack a LexA repressor, but induce gene transcription after DNA damage. One regulator, UmuDAb, binds to and represses the promoters of the multiple A. baumannii ATCC 17978 umuDC alleles and the divergently transcribed umuDAb and ddrR genes. ddrR is unique to the genus Acinetobacter and of unknown function. 5' RACE (rapid amplification of cDNA ends) PCR mapping of the umuDAb and ddrR transcriptional start sites revealed that their −35 promoter elements overlapped the UmuDAb binding site, …

Cognitive Dissonance In Higher Education: Inflating Grades And Not Feeling Guilty, Ahmad Hassan, Fatma Mohamed, Jonathan Nelson Jan 2020

Cognitive Dissonance In Higher Education: Inflating Grades And Not Feeling Guilty, Ahmad Hassan, Fatma Mohamed, Jonathan Nelson

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Although there has been growing interest in recent years in investigating the phenomena of grade inflation in higher education, little has focused on the actual psychological processes through which professors may engage in inflating grades without feeling guilty or perceiving this behavior as problematic. Social psychology has focused on the apparent inconsistency between stated attitudes and actual behavior; specifically, cognitive dissonance theory provides insights into why people may behave immorally. By outlining the role of cognitive dissonance in the grade inflation process we provide greater understanding as to how professors cope with the negative psychological arousal associated with grade inflation.

Homodimerization And Heterodimerization Requirements Of Acinetobacter Baumannii Sos Response Coregulators Umudab And Ddrr Revealed By Two-Hybrid Analyses, Janelle Hare, Debrah Cook, Jordan Carrington, Kevin Johnson Jan 2020

Homodimerization And Heterodimerization Requirements Of Acinetobacter Baumannii Sos Response Coregulators Umudab And Ddrr Revealed By Two-Hybrid Analyses, Janelle Hare, Debrah Cook, Jordan Carrington, Kevin Johnson

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The multidrug-resistant pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii displays unusual control of its SOS mutagenesis genes, as it does not encode a LexA repressor, but instead employs the UmuDAb repressor and a small protein, DdrR, that is uniquely found in Acinetobacter species. We used bacterial adenylate cyclase two-hybrid analyses to determine if UmuDAb and DdrR coregulation might involve physical interactions. Neither quantitative nor qualitative assays showed UmuDAb interaction with DdrR. DdrR hybrid proteins, however, demonstrated modest headto- tail interactions in a qualitative assay. The similarity of UmuDAb to the homodimer-forming polymerase manager UmuD and LexA repressor proteins suggested that it may form dimers, …

Acceleration Of Coronal Mass Ejection Plasma In The Low Corona As Measured By The Citizen Cate Experiment, Jennifer J. Birriel, Ignacio Birriel Jan 2020

Acceleration Of Coronal Mass Ejection Plasma In The Low Corona As Measured By The Citizen Cate Experiment, Jennifer J. Birriel, Ignacio Birriel

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The citizen Continental-America Telescopic Eclipse (CATE) Experiment was a new type of citizen science experiment designed to capture a time sequence of white-light coronal observations during totality from 17:16 to 18:48 UT on 2017 August 21. Using identical instruments the CATE group imaged the inner corona from 1 to 2.1 RSun with 1 43 pixels at a cadence of 2.1 s. A slow coronal mass ejection (CME) started on the SW limb of the Sun before the total eclipse began. An analysis of CATE data from 17:22 to 17:39 UT maps the spatial distribution of coronal flow velocities from about …

Life And Death In The Chicxulub Impact Crater: A Record Of The Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, Jennifer M. O'Keefe Jan 2020

Life And Death In The Chicxulub Impact Crater: A Record Of The Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, Jennifer M. O'Keefe

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Thermal stress on the biosphere during the extreme warmth of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was most severe at low latitudes, with sea surface temperatures at some localities exceeding the 35 C at which marine organisms experience heat stress. Relatively few equivalent terrestrial sections have been identified, and the response of land plants to this extreme heat is still poorly understood. Here, we present a new record of the PETM from the peak ring of the Chicxulub impact crater that has been identified based on nannofossil biostratigraphy, an acme of the dinoflagellate genus Apectodinium, and a negative carbon isotope excursion. …

Use Of Otolith Chemistry To Assess Recruitment And Habitat Use Of A White Bass Fishery In A Nebraska Reservoir, Matthew A. Perrion, Mark A. Kaemingk, Keith D. Koupal, Casey W. Schoenebeck, Nate A. Bickford Jan 2020

Use Of Otolith Chemistry To Assess Recruitment And Habitat Use Of A White Bass Fishery In A Nebraska Reservoir, Matthew A. Perrion, Mark A. Kaemingk, Keith D. Koupal, Casey W. Schoenebeck, Nate A. Bickford

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Managing fisheries that exhibit variable annual recruitment is challenging, and maintenance stockings are often prescribed to minimize interannual population variation. Maintenance stockings are costly and may not be necessary if sufficient natural recruitment is occurring. Therefore, developing tools and techniques that can collectively assess hatching origin and subsequent habitat use of individuals would be valuable. Herein, we aimed to assess the efficacy of otolith chemistry techniques to (1) determine whether there was evidence of natural recruitment within an annually stocked white bass population and (2) examine the potential to describe spatial reservoir use of these age-0 fish. A sample of …

Nanoengineered Core-Shell Structures Using Tubile Halloysite Clay, Yusuf A. Darrat Jan 2020

Nanoengineered Core-Shell Structures Using Tubile Halloysite Clay, Yusuf A. Darrat

Doctoral Dissertations

Halloysite nanotubes are a versatile nanomaterial that can be used in a wide variety of applications. They have a unique structure which could be described as a flat material that consists of silica on one side and alumina on the other; this structure is rolled up in a way naturally forming an internal 10-15 nm lumen and interlayer spacing. This could lead to many potential applications for example incorporating halloysite as a template material or as a support structure. They are an inexpensive clay material that is available in large quantities (thousands of tons), so they may be practically used …

Florida's Late Entrance To The Ongoing Trend: Sexual Orientation In The Workplace, Ernesto Rivero Jan 2020

Florida's Late Entrance To The Ongoing Trend: Sexual Orientation In The Workplace, Ernesto Rivero

St. Thomas Law Review

John Doe is an exceptional firefighter who also happens to be a homosexual. John performs his duties every day to the utmost of his ability; however, in response to his sexual orientation, John is verbally harassed daily, underpaid for his line of work, and subsequently discharged from his position. This is a consequence of practicing his protected constitutional right of same sex marriage at his workplace. Every individual ought to have a fair and inclusive workplace free from discrimination; that is not the case in today’s America. Although employees are protected from discrimination by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 …

Enzyme Kinetics And Protein Modeling Of C. Elegans Isocitrate Dehydrogenase, Seth Hale Jan 2020

Enzyme Kinetics And Protein Modeling Of C. Elegans Isocitrate Dehydrogenase, Seth Hale

Theses & ETDs

Isocitrate dehydrogenase is a crucial enzyme for the citric acid cycle (CAC) and performs the second step which converts isocitrate dehydrogenase to α-ketoglutarate (AKG). IDH-1 is a cytosolic isoform of isocitrate which has been shown to perform both the forward and reverse reaction. Mutants of IDH-1, namely the R132H and G97N mutants, can convert α-ketoglutarate to the oncometabolite 2-hydroxyglutarate. These two mutants are known oncoproteins and are shown to occur in ~80% of WHO grade II and III gliomas. Several theses have been done on wild type C. elegans IDH-1 and the G97N mutant, with most of these theses being …

New Pharmaceuticals And Their Ion Channel Binding Energies, Sarah Darancou Jan 2020

New Pharmaceuticals And Their Ion Channel Binding Energies, Sarah Darancou

Theses & ETDs

Nearly all pharmaceutical drugs come with side effects, including the anticonvulsant drug lamotrigine. In this thesis, several newly proposed alternatives to lamotrigine and their potential metabolites were studied as possible ways to mitigate lamotrigine’s side effects. Simulations were performed on these structures along with lamotrigine and a related molecule, elpetrigine, using the structure optimization software Gaussian and the docking software AutoDock. These molecules were docked to a sodium ion channel, which is thought to be the protein responsible for the therapeutic effect of lamotrigine. The docking simulations found that a fluorine-substituted lamotrigine had the strongest binding affinity to the sodium …

“Somos Seres Humanos. Merecemos Vivir Dignamente”: Coloniality And Human Rights In The Face Of Family Separation, Olivia Pertierra Jan 2020

“Somos Seres Humanos. Merecemos Vivir Dignamente”: Coloniality And Human Rights In The Face Of Family Separation, Olivia Pertierra

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores how people who have been deported to Mexico experience and confront state-sanctioned family separation. From a content analysis of 23 interviews in the Humanizing Deportation public access community story telling archive, three key themes emerge: mixed-status families are denied equal access to family unity, attempts and considerations of re-entry post-deportation are affirmations of the value of family unity, and experiences in detention illustrate the dehumanizing experience of family separation. Theories of coloniality, human rights, and state control over reproduction provide ethical and long-term historical lenses that elucidate the experience of deportation and family separation. The content analysis …

Artifacts Of A Bygone Time: Stephen Sondheim And Pastiche, Rose Mack Jan 2020

Artifacts Of A Bygone Time: Stephen Sondheim And Pastiche, Rose Mack

Theses & ETDs

Stephen Sondheim has crafted dozens of pieces for the musical theatre stage over his sixty-five-year career. Building on work which explores Sondheim’s musical vocabulary, this thesis focuses on how Sondheim uses pastiche as it relates to remembering the past. By focus on this use of pastiche, two sides appear: pastiche as nostalgia and pastiche as stereotype. I look at two of Sondheim’s musicals in order to demonstrate the opposing sides of pastiche. The first is Follies (1971), which uses a style of music from Broadway during the early decades of the twentieth century in order to elicit nostalgia in an …

Effect Of Temperature On The Feeding Behavior And Parasitic Load In Pomacea Paludosa (Say) And Pomacea Insularum (D'Orbigny), Benjamin Lafond Jan 2020

Effect Of Temperature On The Feeding Behavior And Parasitic Load In Pomacea Paludosa (Say) And Pomacea Insularum (D'Orbigny), Benjamin Lafond

Theses & ETDs

Changes in the Earth's climates have been known to cause havoc across many taxa globally. The feeding behavior and parasitic load was examined in the native gastropod, Pomacea paludosa and the invasive gastropod, Pomacea insularum at a control temperature (25°C) and at an experimental, higher, temperature (27.8°C). A feeding behavior study was performed at both temperatures and the parasitic load was evaluated in each gastropod at the conclusion of the study. At the higher temperature both gastropods tend to eat more spinach which suggests that more energy is required to maintain homeostasis at the higher temperature. This may cause ecological …

“The Price Of Touch”: Emergent Postcolonial Subjectivities Through Metaphors Of Illness In Contemporary South Asian Literature, Christina Graben Jan 2020

“The Price Of Touch”: Emergent Postcolonial Subjectivities Through Metaphors Of Illness In Contemporary South Asian Literature, Christina Graben

Theses & ETDs

This thesis identifies a common interest between postcolonial theory and Lacanian notions of subjectivity. Both lines of thought observe a wound that has been written over, by hegemonic structures that enforce colonial networks of power or by the illusion of a stable identity, and examine the traces of that wound as they manifest in our experience of the world. These structures of power and subjectivity govern how our experiences may signify and how we may interpret them, while the wound they attempt to bandage represents a void of signification or holds something inarticulable. The legacies of colonial medicine have defined …

Fever As Alchemical Fire In The Opus Of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Artist Of The Nigredo, Stephanie Crank Jan 2020

Fever As Alchemical Fire In The Opus Of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Artist Of The Nigredo, Stephanie Crank

Theses & ETDs

Brain fever is a recurring event in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novels. It plays a major role in bringing his characters face to face with their buried inner conflicts, especially where an external attitude disguises or compensates for a deeper semi-conscious or unconscious truth which has been rejected. The occurrence of fever signals the insistent onset of a transformational process which will not abate until all self-deception has been burned away, bringing the light of consciousness to repressed and suppressed content and revealing a character’s essential personality. A close analysis of fever as a symptom of the psycho-physiological imperative of transformation in …

Implementing More Biologically Plausible Neural Networks With Multiple Weights In Neat, Elan Works

Theses & ETDs

In many Artificially Intelligent systems biological terms are used to describe particular concepts, or are used directly for inspiration. This project aims to create a more biologically plausible model of a neuron for use in a neural network which will evolve over generations to complete the task of balancing two poles on moving carts. This is attempted through the use of four-vectors and matrix multiplications and is ultimately unsuccessful at outperforming the original algorithm.

Identification And Comparative Genomic Analysis Of Myosin Heavy Chain Genes In Xenopus Borealis, Robyn Mccartan Jan 2020

Identification And Comparative Genomic Analysis Of Myosin Heavy Chain Genes In Xenopus Borealis, Robyn Mccartan

Theses & ETDs

There is an inherent relationship between genetic information, physiological intermediates, and animal behavior. When studying animal behavior, it is important that not only this relationship is studied, but that the relationship is studied in a comparative, evolutionary context. In doing so, it can be determined which physiological intermediates are necessary and sufficient for a behavior to occur. One such behavior where the behavior itself is understood but not the entirety of the physiological intermediates or genetic basis is the vocalization of Xenopus borealis , a type of African clawed frog. In this study, I used bioinformatic techniques and …

The Relationship Between The Notions Of Gender Roles In Flamenco Performances: How Are These Roles Defined In The Flamenco Culture?, Lucille Sanz Jan 2020

The Relationship Between The Notions Of Gender Roles In Flamenco Performances: How Are These Roles Defined In The Flamenco Culture?, Lucille Sanz

Theses & ETDs

Flamenco, as an art form, has developed a gender typecast in which the exhibition of physical movements, vocal interpretations, and the use of customary musical instruments have reflected long-established gender roles and hierarchy of a traditionally patriarchal society. This thesis analyzes how flamenco perpetuates traditional stereotypes of gender, the obstacles artists face within those roles, and how performers are challenging gender differentiation and integrate new gender imagery into modern-day flamenco. In its beginnings, flamenco was not a form of entertainment but instead a way of life where marginalized citizens expressed their fears, joys, and many other emotions via the art …
