Electron Density Reconstruction Of Lipids In The 𝐇𝐈𝐈 Phase, Plinio Rosales Lopez, David A. Ruiter, Paul Harper
Summer Research
Lipids are molecules that contain hydrocarbons and are the building blocks of the structure of biological cells. The lipids we study have a polar head (hydrophilic), a nonpolar tail (lipophilic) and are oil soluble. From a biophysical perspective, it is of great interest to study the electron density of these lipids in order to observe different characteristics like the phase change of the lipid structure. The electron density of the hexagonal phase (HII) was modeled this summer. This research has implications in finding a synthetic substitute for lung proteins. In addition, this research has implications in the biological field in …

Global Joint Registry: Analysis Of Revision Hip Arthroplasty Data, Alicia M. Runser
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) has become well-known as being one of the most successful procedures with much long-term positive clinical results. However, revision surgeries are still required. The four most common failure modes for THAs, “reasons for revision”, are loosening, dislocation or instability, fracture, and infection. The goal of a hip arthroplasty register is to gather information on patients that undergo a total hip arthroplasty and factors pertaining to their surgery which may affect their outcome for future years such as the reason for revision. Analysis of this data can help with the allocation of healthcare funds and the efficacy …

Increasing activity levels permit greater food intake for use towards growth and reproduction, consequently increasing predation risk via increased detection. Larval anurans are models to examine activity level-predation risk tradeoffs, as they occupy a variety of lentic habitats that impose constraints on the distribution and abundance of species. Ephemeral ponds have a low abundance and diversity of predators and as a result tadpole species tend to have high foraging rates for rapid development. Permanent ponds generally possess a greater diversity and abundance of predators and tadpoles inhabiting these locations tend to have low activity rates or chemical defenses to minimize …

This report synthesizes and evaluates published scientific literature on the environmental occurrence and biomagnification of mercury with emphasis on the San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA), California. Mercury forms various compounds, well known for their toxicity in humans and environmental ecosystems. Elemental mercury is transported and distributed by air, water, and sediments. Through the metabolic processes of algae and bacteria, mercury is converted into organic compounds, such as methylmercury (MeHg), which then bioaccumulates up through trophic levels. In fish, it is found primarily in skeletal muscle, while in humans, the primary target organs are the brain and kidneys. Health concerns exist …

Cancer growth is predicted to require substantial rates of substrate catabolism and ATP turnover to drive unrestricted biosynthesis and cell growth. While substrate limitation can dramatically alter cell behavior, the effects of substrate limitation on total cellular ATP production rate is poorly understood. Here, we show that MCF7 breast cancer cells, given different combinations of the common cell culture substrates glucose, glutamine, and pyruvate, display ATP production rates 1.6-fold higher than when cells are limited to each individual substrate. This increase occurred mainly through faster oxidative ATP production, with little to no increase in glycolytic ATP production. In comparison, non-transformed …

Mechanistic Target of Rapamycin Complex 1 (mTORC1) serves as positive regulator of placental nutrient transport and mitochondrial respiration. The role of mTORC1 signaling in modulating other placental functions is largely unexplored. We used gene array following silencing of raptor to identify genes regulated by mTORC1 in primary human trophoblast (PHT) cells. Seven hundred and thirty-nine genes were differentially expressed; 487 genes were down-regulated and 252 up-regulated. Bioinformatic analyses demonstrated that inhibition of mTORC1 resulted in decreased expression of genes encoding ribosomal proteins in the 60S and 40S ribosome subunits. Furthermore, down-regulated genes were functionally enriched in genes involved in eIF2, …

Interphase chromosomes are organized into topologically associated domains in order to establish and maintain integrity of transcriptional programs that remain poorly understood. Here, we show that condensin II and TFIIIC are recruited to bidirectionally transcribed promoters by a mechanism that is dependent on the retinoblastoma (RB) protein. Long-range chromosome contacts are disrupted by loss of condensin II loading, which leads to altered expression at bidirectional gene pairs. This study demonstrates that mammalian condensin II functions to organize long-range chromosome contacts and regulate transcription at specific genes. In addition, RB dependence of condensin II suggests that widespread misregulation of chromosome contacts …

Use Of Kalman Filtering In State And Parameter Estimation Of Diabetes Models, Cassidy Le
Use Of Kalman Filtering In State And Parameter Estimation Of Diabetes Models, Cassidy Le
HMC Senior Theses
Diabetes continues to affect many lives every year, putting those affected by it at higher risk of serious health issues. Despite many efforts, there currently is no cure for diabetes. Nevertheless, researchers continue to study diabetes in hopes of understanding the disease and how it affects people, creating mathematical models to simulate the onset and progression of diabetes. Recent research by David J. Albers, Matthew E. Levine, Andrew Stuart, Lena Mamykina, Bruce Gluckman, and George Hripcsak1 has suggested that these models can be furthered through the use of Data Assimilation, a regression method that synchronizes a model with a …

The Effects Of Various Tree Species On Moss Growth, Sara Romanowski
Student Research Poster Presentations 2020
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between various tree and epiphytic bryophyte species in two different terrestrial environments. The goal was to determine whether or not the present tree species in an area has a direct effect on the abundance and diversity of the epiphytic bryophyte species. This was completed by photo documenting, determining the frequency, and identification of tree and epiphytic bryophyte species in a selected area. These methods were used to accept or reject the following hypothesis: There will be no significant difference between the tree species diversity and epiphytic bryophyte species diversity in …

Wildfires within the western United States are expected to increase in frequency and magnitude but our understanding of how they impact coastal streams is limited. The 2016 Soberanes Wildfire provided an opportunity to determine which biotic and abiotic factors were most impacted by the fire occurring on the California Central Coast. Water quality, benthic macroinvertebrate samples and habitat measurements were taken both before and after the fire. We observed an increase in the levels of phosphorus 4 months and 8 months post-fire which may have contributed to observed increases in microalgae growth. There was a complete loss of shredders in …

Summer Research
Plaster Creek was a thriving ecosystem before European settlers arrived in Grand Rapids. Today, Plaster Creek exists as the most degraded stream in West Michigan according to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality The Green Team initiative, which stems from a partnership between Plaster Creek Stewards and Calvin University, provides a unique opportunity for local high school students to learn about Plaster Creek’s watershed ecology. Students also learn how developmental activities relate to environmental justice issues, and how green infrastructure helps mitigate problems associated with stormwater runoff and improves the general well-being of the watershed over time

Spondylosis deformans is a type of spinal claw osteophytosis which can be found on the anterolateral vertebral bodies of any region, and which consists of protrusions of intervertebral disc tissue covered by a bony shell. We report here a case of thoracic spondylosis deformans and multilevel instrumented fusion found during routine dissection of a cadaver. Theories of the etiology of this condition are reviewed in general, and with respect to this specific case and the potential interaction of the presenting comorbidities. The clinical implications of these osteophytes, including musculoskeletal and visceral sequelae, are also discussed.

Theories Of Foucault And Agamben: The Issues Of Borders And Sovereignty”, Melinda Ann Callahan
MA Major Research Papers
Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben have developed theoretical lenses for depicting how we should understand individuals in sovereign states, and the way in which these states interact with said individuals. Through an approach that assesses the framework of biology, race and ethnicity contribute to the notions of biopolitics and of ‘bare life,’ and exemplifies the constructs of how discrimination against the ‘other’ is embedded in western thought. These systematic processes are utilized through notions of biopower and the ‘state of exception’ as a means of maintaining hierarchical power structures. This paper will be assessing the role of the international in …
