Asian Carp, The Chicago Area Water System, And Aquatic Invasive Species Management In The Great Lakes, Charles Lyons
UC Law Environmental Journal
Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) management is an essential component to the health, integrity, and conservation of the Great Lakes as a whole. Asian carp is the most recent AIS threat to the region. While litigation and interstate agreements have not stemmed the fear of the potential effects of the introduction of Asian carp to the Great Lakes, it has encouraged agency action to address the issue. However, the success of implementing proposed measures requires funding and congressional approval with questions regarding their efficacy remaining unknown. Due to the lack of a comprehensive overarching federal statute addressing AIS management in its …

Microalgae are abundant unicellular photosynthetic organisms with more than 200,000 species. They are more efficient in harvesting solar energy than land-based plants with green microalgae having more than ten times higher biodiesel productivity than the next best land-based crop. Their ability to grow in harsh environments, non-agricultural lands, and make use of wastewater, and the diversity of the products that can be extracted from them, which include cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food supplements, biofuels, and many others, gives them the potential to replace fossil fuels and revolutionize the biotech industry. In order to move onto large scale production, first, the growth rate …

Surface Functionalization And Optical Spectroscopy Of Singlewall Carbon Nanotubes, Fjorela Xhyliu
ETD Archive
This thesis describes a comprehensive study on the complexation of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with biopolymers via noncovalent and covalent approaches as well as the characterization of the resulting complexes. SWCNTs are unique, onedimensional nanocylinders that are highly attractive for surface modification because all their atoms comprise a surface. Specifically, single-chirality SWCNTs functionalized with biomolecules are excellent candidates for applications in bioimaging, biochemical sensing, and drug delivery. Here, we investigated the complexation affinity of recognition sequences of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) with SWCNTs. We utilized the optical modulation of ten chirality-pure SWCNTs to study the kinetics of the coating displacement of …

Stem Cells Based Elastic Matrix Regeneration For Small Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (Aaas) Repair, Shataakshi Dahal
ETD Archive
egenerative repair of the elastic matrix is naturally limited due to the intrinsically poor elastogenicity of adult vascular smooth muscle cells. Therefore, when the elastic matrix, which provides tissue stretch and recoil are disrupted in a proteolytic milieu, such as in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs), localized rupture-prone expansions of the aorta, the damage is difficult to reverse. This demands providing an external, pro-elastin regenerative- and anti-proteolytic stimuli to aneurysmal SMCs in the AAA wall towards reinstating matrix structure in the aorta wall. Introducing alternative phenotypes of highly elastogenic and contractile cells into the AAA wall, capable of providing such cues, …

School Psychologists’ Experience Of Identifying Students With Specific Learning Disabilities In Urban Schools, Jennifer L. Murphy
ETD Archive
The largest group of students receiving special education services in the United States qualify under the category of Specific Learning Disability (SLD) (Cottrell & Barrett, 2015). The most recent reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004) was the first time that federal special education law substantially changed the way in which Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) could identify students as having SLDs. Because of their specialized training, school psychologists are considered to be the disability identification expert of the team (NASP, 2010a). This instrumental case study investigated school psychologists’ experience of identifying SLDs in urban schools …

Performance Of Existing Bone Staples For Treatment Of Fractures, Tariq Maher Salameh
ETD Archive
The utilization of implants for bone immobilization has given the surgeon ways of internal fixation and stabilization during bone healing. Although old fixations tools such as plates and screws are often the preferred choice for fracture fixation, there are many surgical situations where those types of fixations are not appropriate due to the lack of bone space to allow for multiple implants for needed stability, therefore resulting ideal environments for the use of bone staples. Such staples will compress across a fracture site to provide stabilization and immobilization of fractures for of small bones, such as in the foot, ankle …

This three-paper dissertation seeks to understand the factors that drive social sustainability in local contexts, giving attention to institutional efforts of local governments and nonprofit agencies as well as the interdependence between the built environment and collective action efforts. It marries two separate literatures, in public affairs and urban studies, by conceptualizing the relationships between the way spaces have been planned and designed to function and they ways they are lived in and governed. The first paper measures the relationship between modes of housing settlement within a city and the number of social sustainability policies a city adopts, finding a …

Does Inflexible Attention Undermine The Benefits Of Cognitive Reappraisal? A Multi-Method Study Of Adolescents With Anxiety, Anna R. Olczyk
ETD Archive
Several models suggest that anxious individuals suffer from deficits in emotion regulation. However, cognitive reappraisal has shown to effectively reduce anxiety. Deficits in attentional control have been theorized as a possible underlying mechanism of emotion regulation and may moderate the association between cognitive reappraisal and anxiety. Therefore, the present study examined the moderating role of attentional control on the effects of cognitive reappraisal on anxiety symptomology via multiple methodologies in a sample of adolescents. Community dwelling adolescents (N=51) completed measures of anxiety symptoms, the habitual use of cognitive reappraisal, an attention disengagement eye tracking task, and an 8-day Ecological Momentary …
Musculoskeletal State Estimation With Trajectory Optimization And Convolutional Neural Network, Jennifer Wisniewski
Musculoskeletal State Estimation With Trajectory Optimization And Convolutional Neural Network, Jennifer Wisniewski
ETD Archive
Collegiate athletes rely on their muscles to compete in their respective sports. However, one injury requiring extended time out of competition could lead to muscle atrophy. As a result, athletes may learn to compensate for weakened muscle groups with stronger muscle groups; a change that may be almost undetectable. Consequently, compensating can add unnecessary stress to the musculoskeletal system, leading to reinjury. One way to combat this is by measuring muscle force. However, there are currently no methods to directly measure muscle force, so it must be solved for indirectly. This research aims to explore state estimation with trajectory optimization …

Colpodella species are free living biflagellated protists that prey on algae and bodonids in a process known as myzocytosis. Colpodella are phylogenetically closely related to Apicomplexa. Cyst and trophozoite stages have been identified in Colpodella species, however the mechanisms of encystation and excystation are unknown. The timing and transition of the life cycle stages are unknown. In the present study I investigated the life cycle of Colpodella sp. (ATCC 50594). Colpodella sp. were grown in diprotist cultures in tissue culture flasks containing Hay medium bacterized with Enterobacter aerogenes and containing Bodo caudatus as prey. I wanted to know the timing …

Influence Of Hydrogen Peroxide And Depletants On The Clustering Of Active Janus Particles, Mohammed Kalil
ETD Archive
Active Janus particles experience autonomous motion at scales where Brownian stochastic fluctuations typically dominate trajectories. This autonomous motion further drives a broad range of collective behavior in simple and complex environments. Such behavior of synthetic particles has been shown to closely mimic that of motile biological systems. Furthermore, active Janus particles have potential to drive innovation in existing applications, including transport in microscale environments. Herein, I will describe a series of experimentsthat delve into the ensemble behavior of active platinum-coated Janus particles, specifically, the influence of hydrogen peroxide and depletion forces on their clustering dynamics. These experiments are part of …

Thrombomodulin (TM) is a transmembrane glycoprotein that is primarily expressed on the surface of endothelial cells, where it serves as a receptor of thrombin for protein C activation, which regulates coagulation and inflammation. Research has revealed that TM is also expressed in immune cells, including monocytes and macrophages, however, its function is unclear. In this dissertation study, the TM expression in THP-1 monocytes upon their differentiation to macrophages was profiled. Due to the beneficial roles of TM, the protein has caught the attention to be used as a therapeutic. A recombinant form of TM can be expressed that contains EGF-like …

Artificial Neural Network (ANN), which is inspired by biological neural networks in the human brain, is one important tool of machine learning that creates artificial intelligence through computational systems. The creation of this intelligence is contingent on learning from available data regarding a specific subject. Although machine learning, in general, has profuse applications in most scientific disciplines, yet few have been developed in civil engineering due to the required time consuming and demanding programming. In order to minimize this, intelligible ANN software has been developed in this research capable of training networks with any number of hidden layers and nodes …

Developing A Multifunctional Thermo-Responsive Viral Like Particle (Vlp) Platform With New Physicochemical Characteristics, Sepehr Dejdar
ETD Archive
Smart materials are a class of material whose physical characteristics change significantly in a controllable fashion once exposed to an external stimulus such as stress, pH, light, temperature, etc. If the temperature is the external stimuli (control variable) the material is termed thermo-responsive. Out of numerous thermo-responsive materials, elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) is a well-known protein-based biopolymer. Protein cages are well-defined biological nanostructures which are highly symmetrical and monodisperse. This class of proteins are both chemically and genetically tunable, making them a suitable recipient of new properties. Protein re-engineering is the basis of developing a hybrid platform (e.g. polymer-protein) to deliver …

Determination Of Dynorphins And Tnf- A By Lc-Ms/Ms In Biological Samples: Applicable To Studying Inflammatory Mechanisms, Karthik Chandu
ETD Archive
Dynorphins are endogenous opioid peptides that have been implicated as initiators ofimmune and inflammatory response through upregulation ofinflammatory cytokine and chemokine production, as well having a role in glutamate-induced neuro-inflammation and neurotoxicity. Being extremely potent peptides, the physiologic concentrations of dynorphins are very low ranging from 0.16 pg/mL during the absence of a stimulus to 23.5 pg/mL when stimulated in disease condition. Previously published HPLC-mass spectrometry techniques have insufficient detection capabilities for quantification and detection ofdynorphins. As a result, immunoassay quantification has been the most utilized technique for analysis of dynorphins in physiologic samples. Although being sensitive, immunoassays have some …
Determinants Of Holliday Junction Formation And Resolution During Budding Yeast Meiosis, Marina Bykova
Determinants Of Holliday Junction Formation And Resolution During Budding Yeast Meiosis, Marina Bykova
ETD Archive
In the process of meiosis, 4 haploid cells are produced from 1 diploid cell in two rounds of division. During prophase I of meiosis I, double strand breaks (DSBs) are created by the Spo11 protein, some of which are later repaired by homologous recombination into crossovers. During homologous recombination, structures called Holliday Junctions are formed, which later are resolved into crossovers to allow homologous chromosomes to separate. Ifthey are not resolved, the cell arrests and cannot progress further in meiosis. I have investigated three proteins known or suspected to be involved in Holliday Junction formation and resolution: the transcription factor …
Cost Optimization Of Concentric Loaded Rectangular Combined Footings Using Different Matlab Solvers, Muath Amro
Cost Optimization Of Concentric Loaded Rectangular Combined Footings Using Different Matlab Solvers, Muath Amro
ETD Archive
Conventional design methods for combined footings comprise a series of iterations. Generally, this involves an initial guess for the dimensions which are evaluated as guided by the existing design code. This is then followed by several iterations to reduce the cost without any detriment to structural safety. In most cases, the result from the final iteration does not reflect the minimum cost design. This necessitates optimization models capable of establishing efficient and accurate designs within a short period, especially under several design variables. For this purpose, an optimization model for concentric loaded rectangular combined footings was developed in this research. …

Characterization Of The Immune Response To Anti-Mullerian Hormone, Justin M. Johnson
ETD Archive
Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) has been known since the mid-twentieth century as the substance secreted by the testes of the male fetus that is responsible for directing the proper development of the male reproductive organs from the primordial structures that would otherwise become the uterus and fallopian tubes. However, despite its longknown significance in male development, only recently has its importance in the adult female become evident. AMH is now considered to be not only a clinical indicator of the finite ovarian egg supply, but a vital regulator thereof throughout the reproductive life of the female. Dysfunctions in AMH regulation may …

Although Of Course They End Up Constructing Their Selves Performative Gender Identity In The Pale King, Kevin Tasker

The Pale King is a fragmentary work which many critics understand as primarily an examination of boredom. This is an interpretation put forth by Wallace’s editor, Michael Pietsch while attempting to unify the disparate components of the text as it remained after the author’s untimely death in 2008. As Pietsch argues in the 2011 edition’s introduction, “David set out to write a novel about some of the hardest subjects—sadness and boredom” (ix). Though boredom is indeed a theme throughout the book (and one which Wallace addressed while writing it (D.T. Max 281), The Pale King may also be a read …
Achieving Practical Functional Electrical Stimulation-Driven Reaching Motions In An Individual With Tetraplegia, Derek Nathaniel Wolf
Achieving Practical Functional Electrical Stimulation-Driven Reaching Motions In An Individual With Tetraplegia, Derek Nathaniel Wolf
ETD Archive
Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a promising technique for restoring the ability to complete reaching motions to individuals with tetraplegia due to a spinal cord injury (SCI). FES has proven to be a successful technique for controlling many functional tasks such as grasping, standing, and even limited walking. However, translating these successes to reaching motions has proven difficult due to the complexity of the arm and the goaldirected nature of reaching motions. The state-of-the-art systems either use robots to assist the FES-driven reaching motions or control the arm of healthy subjects to complete planar motions. These controllers do not directly …

The method of trajectory optimization with direct collocation has the potential to extract generalized and realistic motion controllers from long duration movement data without requiring extensive measurement equipment. Knowing motion controllers not only can improve clinic assessments on locomotor disabilities, but also can inspire the control of powered exoskeletons and prostheses for better performance. Three aims were included in this dissertation. Aim 1 was to apply and validate the trajectory optimization for identification of the postural controllers in standing balance. The trajectory optimization approach was first validated on the simulated standing balance data and demonstrated that it can extract the …

Neutron Radiography, Jesse Bibby, Sophia Fusco, Matthew Leger, Anthony Marshall
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
Neutron radiography is a type of nondestructive imaging that utilizes slow moving thermal neutrons to penetrate an object and produce high resolution photographs. It is commonly used but not limited to the industries of aerospace, automotive, energy and medical applications. Images produced by neutron radiography appear similar to an X-ray image and can be used instead of or in conjunction with X-ray . The key difference between these imaging methods is while X-ray only allows neutrons to interact with a material’s electron shell, neutron radiography allows neutrons to interact with a material’s nucleus directly. This is an extremely beneficial tool …

Revision Of The Genus Styxosaurus And Relationships Of The Late Cretaceous Elasmosaurids (Sauropterygia: Plesiosauria) Of The Western Interior Seaway, Elliott Armour Smith
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Growing evidence indicates that elasmosaurid plesiosaurs from the Late Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway are members of a single clade, the Styxosaurinae. The styxosaurines are reported to be mostly Campanian in age, and taxa within the clade obtain the longest necks, by number of cervical vertebrae, of any known vertebrate. The styxosaurines are morphologically diverse and include taxa that exhibit a secondary reduction in neck length. Given the evolutionary plasticity of postcranial characters in plesiosaurs in general, and neck length in elasmosaurs, scrutiny of cranial osteology is pertinent to advancing understanding of Western Interior Seaway elasmosaurids. This study finds that an …
