Incarcerated Adults’ Perceptions Of Remaining Opiate Free Upon Release, James Froncek Jan 2020

Incarcerated Adults’ Perceptions Of Remaining Opiate Free Upon Release, James Froncek

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Abstract

Incarcerated adults face the challenge of remaining opiate free after release from incarceration. Despite services offered in jail substance use disorder disproportionately affects approximately half of incarcerated adults. There has been little research into the perceptions related to incarcerated adults experiences to remain opiate free upon release from jail. This descriptive phenomenological project helped elucidate this matter by understanding the lived experiences of five adults who had undergone opiate use treatment while incarcerated, were released, and re-used opiates. The nurse investigator conducted face-to-face interviews with these participants. Seven open-ended questions related to their perceptions and multiple probing questions resulted …

Emergence and reemergence of infectious diseases pose significant public health risks that are continuously haunting human civilization in the past several decades. Such emerging pathogens should be considered as a high threat to humans, animals, and environmental health. The year 2020 was welcomed by another significant virus from family Coronaviridae called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The disease was first reported in the city of Wuhan, Hubei province, China. Within a short time, this disease attained the status of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Presently, COVID-19 has spread to …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In southern China, the silver pheasant (Lophura nycthemera) is a widespread species due to complex topography and sufficient habitats and food resources. We investigated the microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA control region sequence of 115 individuals from 7 locations in China to study population dynamics of the silver pheasant during the Pleistocene. The neutrality test and mismatch distribution analyses showed that population expansion began in the interglacial period (76,053 years ago), and the latest common ancestor appeared approximately 970,300 years ago. Most populations exhibited a high level of genetic diversity as well as gene flow. Results of phylogenetic trees and network …

Taxonomic Investigation Of The Genus Ablepharus (Sauria; Scincidae) With Molecular Andmorphological Methods In Anatolian Populations, Emi̇n Bozkurt, Kurtuluş Olgun

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Ablepharus Lichtenstein, 1823, which includes ten species, is distributed in eastern Europe and Asia. Four species are recorded in Turkey: A. kitaibelii, A. chernovi, A. bivittatus, and A. budaki. After molecular and morphological studies in Anatolia, the phylogenetic relationship of the genus is still very complicated. Here, we investigate the taxonomic status of Ablepharus in Anatolia using morphological and molecular methods. The genetic structure of Ablepharus populations in Anatolia was analyzed using both the nuclear (CMOS) and mitochondrial (cyt b and COI) gene regions. The maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods were applied for phylogenetic tree reconstruction, together with calculation …

Consequences For Public School Truancy And Whether They Affect Student Attendance In West Virginia Counties: A Comprehensive Study, Matthew Jacob Messer Jan 2020

Consequences For Public School Truancy And Whether They Affect Student Attendance In West Virginia Counties: A Comprehensive Study, Matthew Jacob Messer

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Compulsory attendance for school-aged children began in Massachusetts in 1852 and spread to every state in America by 1918. More than 100 years later, educators and other stakeholders continue to struggle to get many students to attend school on a consistent basis and at the desired rate. Failure to do so has significant short- and long-term effects for those students, their schools, their communities, and their future families. There are two types of problematic student attendance: truancy and chronic absenteeism. Truancy counts only unexcused absences and focuses on judicial implications; chronic absenteeism, on the other hand, counts all absences and …

The Formation And Manifestation Of Kidney Stones, Adina Peikes Jan 2020

The Formation And Manifestation Of Kidney Stones, Adina Peikes

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Conclusion:

As more research is done on kidney stones it becomes abundantly clear that even more research is needed. There are an innumerable amount of factors to take into account when determining the best course of treatment for persons with renal calculi. The patient’s occupation, ethnicity, BMI, family history, and region of residence are all contributing aspects. Stone composition may be very varied from case to case. Treatment that was successful for one may be detrimental for the other. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Each case is unique and requires its own analysis and diagnosis. One thing is universal though, …

The Contemporary Methodology For Quantifying Reserved Instream Flow Water Rights To Support Aquatic Habitat, Dylan R. Hedden-Nicely Jan 2020

The Contemporary Methodology For Quantifying Reserved Instream Flow Water Rights To Support Aquatic Habitat, Dylan R. Hedden-Nicely

Articles

Since time immemorial, indigenous people have relied on the streams of their territory for food, fiber, transportation, recreation, cultural, and spiritual needs. Accordingly, tribal people-particularly those in the region now called the Northwestern United States-placed singular emphasis on preserving their traditional subsistence culture when negotiating with the United States during the reservation era. Although rarely expressed in these treaties, the tribes are nonetheless entitled to water rights sufficient to fulfill these traditional subsistence treaty rights. Of the suite of water rights to maintain traditional uses of water, likely the most commonly claimed is for water to maintain fish habitat. A …

Intra-Ocular Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Inhibiting Agents: Indications, Efficacy, And Alternatives, Rena Shilian Jan 2020

Intra-Ocular Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Inhibiting Agents: Indications, Efficacy, And Alternatives, Rena Shilian

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

One of the most revealing parts of the human body is the eye. In fact, systemic conditions and diseases are commonly manifested in the eye and display pathology that reflect disorders. An example of a chorioretinal vascular condition that can present itself in the eye is diabetes mellitus, which if left uncontrolled can damage the eyes and a person’s vision. Age related macular degeneration is specific to the eye, potentially leading to irreversible loss of central vision. Intravitreal injections containing vascular endothelial growth factor inhibiting agents appear to be the leading lines of defense against diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration …

Should Advanced Maternal Age Be A Deterrent For Attempting A Pregnancy?, Sarina Spira Jan 2020

Should Advanced Maternal Age Be A Deterrent For Attempting A Pregnancy?, Sarina Spira

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

In the developed world, the trend toward women of advanced age bearing children is very prevalent and seems likely to continue. For a variety of reasons, women are delaying pregnancy until 35 years and older when they suddenly seem keenly aware that their biological clocks are ticking. A review of various studies obtained from the Proquest and EBSCO databases indicates that there are definitely certain risks associated with advanced maternal age (AMA). As females age, the reduced number and quality of their remaining eggs contribute to reduced fertility. Congenital anomalies involving the number of chromosomes in the embryo increases as …

Advancements In Vaccine Development: Measles Vs. Covid-19, Sarah Ziegler Jan 2020

Advancements In Vaccine Development: Measles Vs. Covid-19, Sarah Ziegler

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

As an ever-progressing field of study, vaccine development has made headway over the past decades. By doing a comparative study between development of the measles vaccine in the mid-20th century, and the ongoing development of the COVID-19 vaccine in 2020, many of the insights and advancements in the field can be easily highlighted. First, the knowledge and experience gained over those decades has helped the vaccine developing process become more efficient. With more vaccines in production, or at least under study, it is more likely to have a related precedent to build upon, as opposed to relying on a successful …

Effective Treatments For Nicotine Addiction, Chaya Shor Jan 2020

Effective Treatments For Nicotine Addiction, Chaya Shor

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Nicotine dependence as a result of smoking is a chronically relapsing disorder with detrimental effects. However, fortunately for smokers, an armamentarium of smoking cessation aids is available in the forms of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), non-nicotinic drugs (namely varenicline and bupropion), and the novel nicotine vaccines, each with their own mode of action to moderate nicotine addiction. This paper analyzes the mechanism of action associated with nicotine addiction and the various methods of combat, or at the very least, attenuation of the addiction.

Is Rapamycin An Effective Anti-Aging Drug?, Basya Aboud

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Scientific and pharmaceutical advancements have revolutionized medicine. Many once- debilitating or fatal diseases can now be managed with medication. However, the search for a cure for the inevitable aging diseased state remained futile until recently. Rapamycin has been studied for its possible longevity effects, providing promising results for the development of anti-aging therapies. This paper evaluates the benefits and risks of rapamycin use. While rapamycin cannot be supported as a safe anti-aging drug, rapamycin studies have elucidated parts of the aging pathway, providing a breakthrough for anti-aging research.

What Role Does Age-Associated Neuroplasticity Play In The Efficacy Of Cochlear Implantation?, Jacob Fliegelman Jan 2020

What Role Does Age-Associated Neuroplasticity Play In The Efficacy Of Cochlear Implantation?, Jacob Fliegelman

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Bilateral, profound-severe, congenital deafness causes widespread structural and functional changes of the auditory system. In humans, the consequences of these changes are extensive and often include detriments to language acquisition and auditory perception. Fortunately, early intervention methods, such as cochlear implantation, can significantly mitigate inevitable auditory deficiencies. This review begins by briefly addressing early stages of brain development and associated anatomical discrepancies observed in congenitally deaf subjects. Considering the deleterious effects of congenital deafness, neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to rewire itself, is of paramount importance in reversing the auditory impairments. Hence, its incorporation into the methods required for …

Editor's Commentary: The Relationship Of Vertical Turbulence And Spring Diatom Flowerings, Peter Franks Jan 2020

Editor's Commentary: The Relationship Of Vertical Turbulence And Spring Diatom Flowerings, Peter Franks

Journal of Marine Research

The dynamics of spring blooms of phytoplankton in temperate waters are usually associated with H.U. Sverdrup’s 1953 “critical depth” model. However, more than a decade earlier, Gordon Riley published a statistical and mechanistic analysis of data he had gathered over two spring “flowerings” on Georges Bank...

Classic Article: The Relationship Of Vertical Turbulence And Spring Diatom Flowerings, Gordon A. Riley

Journal of Marine Research

The causes underlying the initiation of the spring diatom flowering have been a subject of vigorous discussion in recent years. With the gradual accumulation of records it has become quite clear that no one factor controls this peculiar phenomenon. The obvious prerequisite, an abundant supply of nutrient salts in the euphotic zone, is generally satisfied during the autumn and early winter, yet a flowering does not in most cases follow immediately. In a few localities, such as Cape Cod Bay and Ipswich Bay (Bigelow 1926), the Woods Hole region (Fish 1925), and Long Island Sound (Riley 1941a), diatom bursts have …

Review: Gregory Prince. Gay Rights And The Mormon Church: Intended Actions, Unintended Consequences. Salt Lake City: University Of Utah Press, 2019., Elizabeth Alice Clement

Mormon Studies Review

With an accessible writing style and startlingly short chapters, Gregory Prince analyzes three aspects of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint’s engagement with homosexuality in the postwar US.1 First, he carefully traces the evolution of the church’s understanding of the causes of homosexuality and the policies the church developed to address same sex attraction among the faithful. Second, he analyzes the church’s participation in both state and national debates around public policy towards homosexuality, with a particular focus on the campaigns against gay marriage. Finally, he explores the harm the church’s analysis, policy, and public involvement have done …

Writing The Gap: The Role Of Clinician-Authored Narratives In Building Structural Competence And Situated Knowledge In Service Of Marginalized Patient Populations, Anusha Singh Jan 2020

Writing The Gap: The Role Of Clinician-Authored Narratives In Building Structural Competence And Situated Knowledge In Service Of Marginalized Patient Populations, Anusha Singh

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This thesis analyzes clinician-authored narratives about mental illness. Through this lens, it argues that the writing and reading of medical narratives can facilitate the development of key clinical skills such as structural competence and situated knowledge – terms that this thesis will define and discuss at length. It will argue that clinicians who write about structural barriers to health do so to develop a deeper understanding about their vulnerable and marginalized patient populations. It will assert that clinicians who pursue situated knowledge can positively impact health outcomes. Ultimately, this thesis will compare what clinician-authored narratives can achieve with what patient …
