Chemical And Biological Indicators Of Soil Health In Chicago Urban Gardens And Farms, Carmen M. Ugarte, John R. Taylor
Chemical And Biological Indicators Of Soil Health In Chicago Urban Gardens And Farms, Carmen M. Ugarte, John R. Taylor
Plant Sciences and Entomology Faculty Publications
Urban food production is conducted in highly heterogeneous environments that have undergone considerable manipulation by building, demolition, and/or industrial pollution. This study evaluated soil quality characteristics in urban sites currently used for vegetable production across an urban to peri-urban gradient in Chicago, IL, USA. Twenty-one sites were classified based on the scale of management as private home gardens, community gardens, institutional farms, and private urban farms. We quantified indicators of soil fertility, nematode trophic composition, and indicators of the food web status (Maturity Index, Enrichment Index, Channel Index, and Structure Index). We also quantified concentrations of soil contaminants including lead …

Ticks are obligate hematophagous arthropods and act as vectors for a great variety of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and helminths. Some tick-borne viruses, such as Powassan virus and tick-borne encephalitis virus, are transmissible within 15–60 min after tick attachment. However, a minimum of 3–24 h of tick attachment is necessary to effectively transmit bacterial agents such as Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma spp., and Rickettsia spp. to a new host. Longer transmission periods were reported for Borrelia spp. and protozoans such as Babesia spp., which require a minimum duration of 24–48 h of tick attachment for maturation and migration of the …

Making Research Data Accessible, Diana Kapiszweski, Sebastian Karcher
Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs
This chapter argues that these benefits will accrue more quickly, and will be more significant and more enduring, if researchers make their data “meaningfully accessible.” Data are meaningfully accessible when they can be interpreted and analyzed by scholars far beyond those who generated them. Making data meaningfully accessible requires that scholars take the appropriate steps to prepare their data for sharing, and avail themselves of the increasingly sophisticated infrastructure for publishing and preserving research data. The better other researchers can understand shared data and the more researchers who can access them, the more those data will be re-used for secondary …

Increases in temperature variability associated with climate change has critical implications for the phenology of wildlife across the globe. Indeed, there have been many examples of warmer winter temperatures (i.e. “false springs”) inducing forward shifts in breeding phenology. Earlier breeding can put wildlife at risk of freeze events during reproduction or vulnerable early life stages. Furthermore, in addition to temperature shifts, wildlife populations commonly encounter a wide diversity of other stressors (e.g. pollutants). As global change is predicted to increase both temperature variability and instances of pollutant contamination, understanding interactions between these stressors will become increasingly important. Using 14 populations …
Development Of Integrated Machine Learning And Data Science Approaches For The Prediction Of Cancer Mutation And Autonomous Drug Discovery Of Anti-Cancer Therapeutic Agents, Steven Agajanian
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
Few technological ideas have captivated the minds of biochemical researchers to the degree that machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) have. Over the last few years, advances in the ML field have driven the design of new computational systems that improve with experience and are able to model increasingly complex chemical and biological phenomena. In this dissertation, we capitalize on these achievements and use machine learning to study drug receptor sites and design drugs to target these sites. First, we analyze the significance of various single nucleotide variations and assess their rate of contribution to cancer. Following that, we …

Which Hypothesis Best Explains The Development Of Cancer?, Ariel M. Mayer
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
There are three theories of cancer development analyzed in this review. The first theory is the immunological theory, which states that cancer is a result of the immune system failing to detect a cancerous cell in which results in uncontrolled cell growth. The second theory is the somatic mutation theory, which states that genetic mutations are a direct cause cancer. The third theory is the stem cell theory which states that cancer results from an uncontrolled stem cell. The difference in each theory helps guide a clinician’s judgment in how to treat cancer. If a clinician believes in the immunological …
The Biocompatibility Of Various Dental Materials, Amy Noble
The Biocompatibility Of Various Dental Materials, Amy Noble
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Dentistry is a continuously evolving field with new materials and technologies constantly innovated. The oral cavity presents a harsh environment in which restorative and implant materials must be able to withstand. Aside for meeting the appropriate physical and chemical standards, it is important that dental materials be biocompatible. Biocompatibility relates to the material’s ability to function in the body without causing harm to living tissue. It is necessary to analyze the materials being used and determine whether they interact with the body in a detrimental manner. This will enable dental professionals to choose the most beneficial material to utilize for …
Uterine Transplantation: A Review Of Some Of The Factors That Account For The Success Or Failure Of This Experimental Procedure, Rachel Stern
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Those who suffer from infertility, either due to a congenital or acquired cause and cannot or are opposed to other means, such as surrogacy or adoption, to have a child, are potential candidates for uterine transplantation. Uterine transplantation is a form of allograft transplantation, meaning that it is a transplant of tissue from a donor who is genetically different from the recipient. Additionally, it is a vascularized transplant, including donor blood vessels that will be sutured to the vasculature of the recipient (Testa et al. 2017). This procedure has been attempted around the globe with varying levels of success ranging …

What Is The Future Of Organoids?, Michelle Freilich
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
The term organoid refers to a miniature version of any organ of the body. An organoid is artificially produced in vitro from stem cells or tissue that possess the ability to recapitulate and form the three-dimensional structure of the organ they were once a part of. Scientists have learned to create a culture for the organoid that mimics its original micro cellular environment, allowing the 3-D structure to self-organize and develop into miniature organs. The purpose of this paper is to explore the many advancements of organoid technology, and how this progress has benefited the medical field. Organoid technology allows …

Teaching Political Science Research Methods Across Delivery Modalities: Comparing Outcomes Between Face-To-Face And Distance-Hybrid Courses, Delton T. Daigle, Aaron Stuvland
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
What delivery modality is most effective in teaching undergraduate, political science research methods? Using systematically collected data from two academic terms and employing a quasi-experimental design, this paper explores variation in learning outcomes between face-to-face and distance-hybrid course offerings. Variation in the dependent variable is observed through measuring attrition (drop or failure), course performance among those who pass, and course satisfaction. While any evidence of difference in attrition rates is marginal when controlling for sex, age, university experience, a background in similar coursework, or whether the course is taken by a major, there is no evidence that modality predicts performance …

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications
A wide variety of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals are used in livestock production systems and residues passed to the environment, often unmetabolized, after use and excretion. Antibiotic residuesmay be transported frommanure-treated soils via runoff and are also capable of reaching surface and groundwater systems through a variety of pathways. The occurrence and persistence of antibiotics in the environment is a concern due to the potential for ecological effects and proliferation of environmental antibiotic resistance in pathogenic organisms. In the present study, the occurrence and seasonal variation of 24 commonly-used veterinary antibiotics was evaluated in surface water adjacent to several livestock …

Biology
Males and females differ in body composition and fat distribution. Using a mouse model that segregates gonadal sex (ovaries and testes) from chromosomal sex (XX and XY), we showed that XX chromosome complement in combination with a high-fat diet led to enhanced weight gain in the presence of male or female gonads. We identified the genomic dosage of Kdm5c, an X chromosome gene that escapes X chromosome inactivation, as a determinant of the X chromosome effect on adiposity. Modulating Kdm5c gene dosage in XX female mice to levels that are normally present in males resulted in reduced body weight, fat …

Human Organ/Limb Regeneration: A Dream Or Reality?, Shmuel Sashitzky
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Organ and limb regeneration might seem like something out of science fiction, but research has been ongoing since the late 1960s and has greatly increased at the turn of the century. It is an understatement to say that this has the potential to be life changing. The need for donor transplant organs and transplant waiting lists can become obsolete and the use of immunosuppressants post-transplant will become unnecessary (leading to higher survival rates). Should this happen, trauma patients will be able to achieve complete recoveries and the reign of some congenital disorders will come to an end. Nature has provided …

© 2019 The Author(s). Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology. Pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy devices are potentially life-saving treatments for a number of cardiac conditions, but are not without risk. Most concerning is the risk of a cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infection, which is associated with significant morbidity, increased hospitalizations, reduced survival, and increased healthcare costs. Recommended preventive strategies such as administration of intravenous antibiotics before implantation are well recognized. Uncertainties have remained about the role of various preventive, diagnostic, and treatment measures such as skin antiseptics, pocket …

The COVID-19 pandemic seemingly is peaking now in New York City and has triggered significant changes to the standard management of gastrointestinal diseases. Priorities such as minimizing viral transmission, preserving personal protective equipment, and freeing hospital beds have driven unconventional approaches to managing gastroenterology (GI) patients. Conversion of endoscopy units to COVID units and redeployment of GI fellows and faculty has profoundly changed the profile of most GI services. Meanwhile, consult and procedural volumes have been reduced drastically. In this review, we share our collective experiences regarding how we have changed our practice of medicine in response to the COVID …
