Transgender Labour Market Outcomes: Evidence From The Us, Klavs Ciprikis, Damien Cassells, Jenny Berrill
Articles
Alternative labour market outcomes for men and women have been studied extensively in past literature. However, existing studies fail to directly compare labour market differences between transgender and non-transgender people. We utilize data from the 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Sys- tem in the United States to examine employment and wage differentials between transgender persons and non- transgender people using the Fairlie decomposition method of 2005. Our findings suggest that transgender people are less likely than non-transgender people to be employed, and are more likely than non-transgender people to receive lower wages. While some of the difference in employment and …

Occurrence Of North American Porcupine (Erethizon Dorsatum) In The Black Hills, South Dakota, Lenora M. Dombro, Earl Perez-Foust, Daniel Roddy, Daryl E. Mergen, Robert A. Gitzen
Western North American Naturalist
During the twentieth century, the North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) was common in the Black Hills of western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. However, the low number of recent observations in the region has led to concern that porcupine populations have declined. We conducted systematic surveys to assess porcupine occurrence at two hundred and sixty-three 1-ha sites in the Black Hills National Forest, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and Wind Cave National Park during 2016–2017. We observed no porcupines or recent feeding sign. We also noted few recent observations in information compiled …

Educated To Death? Women’S Higher Education, Reproductive Health, And The Scientific Method In The United States, 1870-1900, Eleanor Naiman
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
From 1870-1890, American gynecologists positioned themselves at the center of debates about women’s education. Gynecologists manipulated social anxiety about shifting demographics and falling birthrates among white middle class women in order to legitimate their emerging discipline. In doing so, they couched American understandings of infertility in a politics of blame and demonized women for their inability to reproduce. Although doctors’ conversations about “sterility” primarily took place within the pages of journals published by all-male medical associations, many women engaged in this debate and challenged medical authority in the pages of popular magazines and newspapers. Female doctors, teachers, scholars, women’s college …

Administration Of Canagliflozin For The Remission Of Metabolic Syndrome In Nondiabetic Adults, Corrie Asseo
Administration Of Canagliflozin For The Remission Of Metabolic Syndrome In Nondiabetic Adults, Corrie Asseo
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Metabolic syndrome is a critical risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease, two of the leading causes of death in the United States. With over one third of the adult population currently affected, this syndrome poses a serious health and economic burden. Lifestyle modification is the primary treatment, however only 50% maintain adherence. A single pharmacological therapy such as canagliflozin may overcome this lack of treatment adherence. Our purpose is to establish a difference between canagliflozin 300 milligrams daily plus lifestyle modification education and lifestyle modification education alone for the remission of metabolic syndrome …
Magnesium Exposure In Very Preterm Neonates And Adverse Gastrointestinal Outcomes, Giavanna G. Chirico
Magnesium Exposure In Very Preterm Neonates And Adverse Gastrointestinal Outcomes, Giavanna G. Chirico
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Preterm birth is the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, especially among neonates born less than 32 weeks’ gestation. Magnesium sulfate is the standard treatment for seizure prevention in preeclampsia and for fetal neuroprotection in mothers at risk for preterm delivery. However, the consequences of antenatal magnesium exposure on the very preterm neonate’s gastrointestinal tract are not fully established. This study will determine whether elevated magnesium levels in very preterm neonates are associated with adverse gastrointestinal outcomes from birth to 4 months. Specifically, using a prospective cohort design, we will measure magnesium in umbilical cord blood of very preterm …
Vitamin D Supplementation In Fitzpatrick Skin Types Iv-Vi As Malignant Melanoma Adjuvant Treatment, Shikha Goyal
Vitamin D Supplementation In Fitzpatrick Skin Types Iv-Vi As Malignant Melanoma Adjuvant Treatment, Shikha Goyal
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Melanoma is the most lethal form of skin cancer and accounts for the majority of skin cancer deaths. Melanoma is prone to recurrence, and even with early surgical intervention relapse occurs in approximately one-third of patients. The current standard of care following excision is inconsistent and patients would benefit from adjuvant treatment to reduce recurrence rates. This randomized controlled study will investigate whether supplementation with vitamin D reduces risk of melanoma recurrence in adults with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI who have been diagnosed and treated for cutaneous melanoma. Outcomes will be measured by relapse-free survival rates over an 18-month period. …
The Impact Of Peer Education On Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery Readmission Rates, Melissa Ling
The Impact Of Peer Education On Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery Readmission Rates, Melissa Ling
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Coronary artery bypass surgery is the most common cardiovascular operation performed in the United States. Coronary artery bypass surgery lowers rates of cardiovascular death by restoring circulation to cardiac tissue in patients with coronary artery disease. However, this surgery is associated with unacceptably high readmission rates, posing both health risks for the patient and a substantial financial burden on the healthcare system. Our objective is to investigate whether peer education can improve 30-day readmission rates of patients after coronary artery bypass surgery. Adult patients undergoing a coronary artery bypass surgery will either receive the usual standard of care or four …
Plant Defensin Antibacterial Mode Of Action Against Pseudomonas Species, Andrew E. Sathoff, Shawn Lewenza, Deborah A. Samac
Plant Defensin Antibacterial Mode Of Action Against Pseudomonas Species, Andrew E. Sathoff, Shawn Lewenza, Deborah A. Samac
Research & Publications
Background: Though many plant defensins exhibit antibacterial activity, little is known about their antibacterial mode of action (MOA). Antimicrobial peptides with a characterized MOA induce the expression of multiple bacterial outer membrane modifications, which are required for resistance to these membrane-targeting peptides. Mini-Tn5- lux mutant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with Tn insertions disrupting outer membrane protective modifications were assessed for sensitivity against plant defensin peptides. These transcriptional lux reporter strains were also evaluated for lux gene expression in response to sublethal plant defensin exposure. Also, a plant pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae was modified through transposon mutagenesis to …

Molecular Interplay Between Dormant Bone Marrow-Resident Cells (Bmrcs) And Ctcs In Breast Cancer., Debasish Boral, S Ray Kenney, Dario Marchetti, Haowen N. Liu
Pathology Research and Scholarship
Despite widespread knowledge that bone marrow-resident breast cancer cells (BMRCs) affect tumor progression, signaling mechanisms of BMRCs implicated in maintaining long-term dormancy have not been characterized. To overcome these hurdles, we developed a new experimental model of clinical dormancy employing patient-isolated Circulating Tumor Cells (de novo CTCs) and their injection in xenografts with subsequent tumor monitoring and CTC characterization (ex vivo CTCs). We hypothesized that significant distinctions exist between signaling pathways of bone marrow-homing vs metastasis-competent CTCs upon transplantation in xenografts. Comparative transcriptomic analyses of ex vivo vs de novo CTCs identified increased mTOR signaling-a critical pathway frequently dysregulated in …
Predictors Of Psychosocial And Physiological Distress In Colorectal Cancer Patients, Hyrum Eddington
Predictors Of Psychosocial And Physiological Distress In Colorectal Cancer Patients, Hyrum Eddington
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Distress among cancer patients has been broadly accepted as an important indicator of patient well-being. However, questions remain such as what patient characteristics are associated with high distress and whether patient-reported distress is correlated with distress biomarkers. To answer these questions, we performed a survey study of 238 colorectal patients in which we assessed patient-reported distress, possible contributors to that distress, and patient anxiety and depression. We also abstracted demographic and clinical information from patient charts and collected measures for salivary cortisol and sarcopenia. We conducted bivariate statistical analyses between patient demographics, clinical factors, and psychosocial measures with our three …

Bacterial single-stranded DNA-binding proteins (SSBs) bind single-stranded DNA and help to recruit heterologous proteins to their sites of action. SSBs perform these essential functions through a modular structural architecture: the N-terminal domain comprises a DNA binding/tetramerization element whereas the C-terminus forms an intrinsically disordered linker (IDL) capped by a protein-interacting SSB-Ct motif. Here we examine the activities of SSB-IDL fusion proteins in which fluorescent domains are inserted within the IDL of Escherichia coli SSB. The SSB-IDL fusions maintain DNA and protein binding activities in vitro, although cooperative DNA binding is impaired. In contrast, an SSB variant with a fluorescent protein …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Currently, cardiotoxicity is monitored through echocardiography or multigated acquisition scanning and is defined as 10% or higher LVEF reduction. The latter stage may represent irreversible myocardium injury and limits modification of therapeutic paradigms at earliest stages. To stratify patients for anthracycline-related heart failure, highly sensitive and molecularly specific probes capable of interrogating cardiac damage at the subcellular levels have been sought.
RECENT FINDINGS: PET tracers may provide noninvasive assessment of earliest changes within myocardium. These tracers are at nascent stages of development and belong primarily to (a) mitochondrial potential-targeted and (b) general ROS (reactive oxygen species)-targeted radiotracers. …
Plasmogamic Paternal Contributions To Early Zygotic Development In Flowering Plants, Yukinosuke Ohnishi, Tomokazu Kawashima
Plasmogamic Paternal Contributions To Early Zygotic Development In Flowering Plants, Yukinosuke Ohnishi, Tomokazu Kawashima
Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications
Flowering plant zygotes possess complete developmental potency, and the mixture of male and female genetic and cytosolic materials in the zygote is a trigger to initiate embryo development. Plasmogamy, the fusion of the gamete cytoplasms, facilitates the cellular dynamics of the zygote. In the last decade, mutant analyses, live cell imaging-based observations, and direct observations of fertilized egg cells by in vitro fusion of isolated gametes have accelerated our understanding of the post-plasmogamic events in flowering plants including cell wall formation, gamete nuclear migration and fusion, and zygotic cell elongation and asymmetric division. Especially, it has become more evident that …
Toward A More Apparent Approach To Considering The Admission Of Expert Testimony, Thomas D. Schroeder
Toward A More Apparent Approach To Considering The Admission Of Expert Testimony, Thomas D. Schroeder
Notre Dame Law Review
This Article highlights lingering confusion in the caselaw as to the proper standard for the trial court’s discharge of its gatekeeping role for the admission of expert testimony. The Article urges correction of the faulty application of Daubert’s admonition as to “shaky but admissible” evidence as a substitute for proper discharge of the trial court’s gatekeeper function under Rule 104(a). The Article concludes with several suggestions for trial and appellate courts to consider for better decisionmaking in discharging their duty to apply Rule 104(a)’s preponderance standard to the elements of Rule 702.

"Of Substantial Religious Importance": A Case For A Deferential Approach To The Ministerial Exception, Allison H. Pope
Notre Dame Law Review
This Note argues that, in order to remain consistent with the Religion Clauses’ protection of religious autonomy, civil courts must defer to the religious group’s determination of which of its employees play a role “of substantial religious importance” within the organization in carrying out its religious mission under its tenets, and are therefore “ministers,” rather than investigate and make that determination themselves. Part I provides background information on the First Amendment and an overview of the circuit court and Supreme Court decisions that laid the foundation for, built, adopted, and applied the ministerial exception as described in Hosanna-Tabor. Part …
Vegetation And Large Carnivore Responses In An Encroached Landscape, Hugh Ellerman
Vegetation And Large Carnivore Responses In An Encroached Landscape, Hugh Ellerman
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Great Plains biome supports biodiverse plant and animal communities, provides a wide array of ecosystem services, and is depended upon by agricultural economies. Despite these advantages, however, Great Plains grasslands are becoming increasingly degraded by landcover changes due to agriculture and urbanization, fragmentation, loss of biodiversity and invasion by woody species. Woody encroachment is a biome-wide threat to Great Plains plant and wildlife communities and is therefore managed, though with variable success. I investigated the efficacy of invasive tree management projects in restoring tallgrass prairies in southeast Nebraska and regenerating oak gallery forests along the Niobrara River. I measured …

Recent revolutionary advances at the intersection of medicine, omics, data sciences, computing, epidemiology, and related technologies inspire us to ponder their impact on health. Their potential impact is particularly germane to the biology of pregnancy and perinatal medicine, where limited improvement in health outcomes for women and children has remained a global challenge. We assembled a group of experts to establish a Pregnancy Think Tank to discuss a broad spectrum of major gestational disorders and adverse pregnancy outcomes that affect maternal-infant lifelong health and should serve as targets for leveraging the many recent advances. This report reflects avenues for future …

“How Well Does Your Structural Equation Model Fit Your Data?”: Is Marcoulides And Yuan’S Equivalence Test The Answer?, James Peugh, David F. Feldon
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Structural equation modeling is an ideal data analytical tool for testing complex relationships among many analytical variables. It can simultaneously test multiple mediating and moderating relationships, estimate latent variables on the basis of related measures, and address practical issues such as nonnormality and missing data. To test the extent to which a hypothesized model provides an appropriate characterization of the collective relationships among its variables, researchers must assess the “fit” between the model and the sample’s data. However, interpreting estimates of model fit is a problematic process. The traditional inferential test of model fit, the chi-square test, is biased due …

At present we are witnessing a tremendous interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly in Deep Learning (DL)/Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). One of the reasons appears to be the unmatched performance achieved by such systems. This has resulted in an enormous hope on such techniques and often these are viewed as all—cure solutions. But most of these systems cannot explain why a particular decision is made (black box) and sometimes miserably fail in cases where other systems would not. Consequently, in critical applications such as healthcare and defense practitioners do not like to trust such systems. Although an AI system is …
High-Efficiency Transformation Of Yeast By Electroporation, Lilly Ruell
High-Efficiency Transformation Of Yeast By Electroporation, Lilly Ruell
Honors Theses
This paper analyzes and optimizes efficiency in the yeast transformation protocol using electroporation. Three variables were tested for optimization, they are the following: DNA concentration, cell density and electroporation voltage. Further verification of transformation was done through the analyzation of HPLC data to ensure protein production. The results conclude that DNA concentration was the most important dependent variable for transformation efficiency. A voltage of 2000V is the optimal condition to achieve efficient yeast transformation. Cell density had no observational difference in transformation efficiency at the range of DNA concentration necessary for research use. Improving this efficiency of the yeast transformations …

Most malaria deaths are caused by the protozoan parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Its life cycle is regulated by a cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PfPKG), whose inhibition is a promising antimalaria strategy. Allosteric kinase inhibitors, such as cGMP analogs, offer enhanced selectivity relative to competitive kinase inhibitors. However, the mechanisms underlying allosteric PfPKG inhibition are incompletely understood. Here, we show that 8-NBD-cGMP is an effective PfPKG antagonist. Using comparative NMR analyses of a key regulatory domain, PfD, in its apo, cGMP-bound, and cGMP analog–bound states, we elucidated its inhibition mechanism of action. Using NMR chemical shift …

Questions Concerning Attention And Stiegler’S Therapeutics, Noel Fitzpatrick
Articles
The article sets out to develop the concept of attention as a key aspect to building the possible therapeutics that Bernard Stiegler’s recent works have pointed to (The Automatic Society, 2016, The Neganthropocene, 2018 and Qu’appelle-t-on Panser, 2018). The therapeutic aspect of pharmacology takes place through processes that are neganthropic; therefore, which attempt to counteract the entropic nature of digital technologies where there is flattening out to the measurable and the calculable of Big Data. The most obvious examples of this flattening out can be seen in relation to the use of natural language processing technologies for …
